Dear friends,
As you probably realized after buying your android phone, the internal Messaging application for SMS/MMS does not really support SMS/MMS delivery notification.
Sure you can enable it in the settings but it does not notify you when the recipient really received the sms. You have to go into the conversation and either check the icon next to the envelop or hold down on one message and choose view report to get the status "Received" or "Pending".
After my frustration I decided to download the sources of the Messaging application from Google and enhance it so it would notify. I managed to do that after a lot of hours trying and coding so I wanted to share this.
This is the original froyo Messaging application compiled from source for the generic emulator so it should work on all 2.2 ROM phones.
What it does:
- If delivery reports are enabled on the messaging settings it will light up the screen and notify for incoming sms or mms messages when received using sound and vibration.
- The notification sound and the vibration settings are not the ones defined for incoming sms's but those in general phone settings. That way you can adjust the sound and vibration and distinguish it from incoming messages.
- It will give a message on status bar with Incoming sender the original recipient and in the details his/her specific number: "John: The message to +3088999... has been delivered".
- If you click on the notification it will take you to the specific conversation and clear the notification.
- If a second delivery report arrives from another recipient it will create a new notification not removing the first.
- If you get into the messages the delivery reports will be cleared (it means you read them).
- For MMS's it will only notify when the recipient got the message, (not when he read it. You can still view if he read it on the conversation details, I though it would be too much to check this also).
Update:
- Added Greek sms 160 characters per sms support.
- Added longer vibration (2 longer vibrations per delivery report, 4 longer vibrations per SMS/MMS).
I tested this with my ZTE Blade 2.2 and many other devices and it works as expected.
To install it you have to:
- Uninstall the original. To do that you must have a rooted phone and use something like "Root Explorer", or "SuperManager" (the second one is free from the market) to delete (keep a copy just in case) /system/app/Mms.apk from your phone and reboot.
- After that you can install the one I provide below.
Mms2.apk
The version below was extracted by the WIND froyo 2.2 official rom (based on the chineese leak and the SS RLS5) and was modified by me to add my changes using decompile/recompile apktool methods.
It has better icons and colors and some extra options for adding signature etc.
Mms2_wind_greek_vibrate.apk
/Update 17/06/2011
Please uninstall the one you are using first before trying to install. Then activate settings (enable reports).
I 've spent more that 60 euros in tests so if you could donate anything I would be very thankful.
I also find the "put a #0 on every sms" solution unacceptable since it is not supported by all providers and it comes as an extra sms that you have to delete.

I will take a look at it, I have had some issues with the SMS system.
Thanks,

I 've noticed that some roms have a modified version which notifies on sms delivery. I don;t know which ones but ZTE blade and many many other phones carrying the official froyo Messaging system do not include that.
Official froyo 2.2 Messaging source (gingerbread as well) only displays a very brief popup on the screen when the sms is received with no notification sound or light.
Re opened as per OP request
What i am interested in changing the the entire Notification on SMS received... did anyone do any work to make it look like the Blackberry SMS?
On BBs we see the small checkmark when its sent, the D for delivered and R for read... all in a tiny space next to a message, no need to get plenty of delivery reports...

Hey guys,
i am searching for for a solution to get notified about delivery of sent sms. i know that i can enable it but than i always get an SMS from "System Administrator". Is there any way to just get a popup "message delivered"?
I mean even my further mobile phone of sony ericsson had this feature
Thanks for your tipps

If you install HD Tweak then there is a setting in there that will notify you of a message being sucesfully being sent; I use it!
Owen.
jgui sms report eraser is one solution. Unfortunately it 10 euros.
Although you get delivery reports in the same style as you mentioned, it will do it silently and can erase or transfer them to delivery reports folder immediately or after a set period.
So you can check if you need to know if its been delivered, but otherwise be undisturbed.
That's the option I use in the face of not having found a better one..
Edit - realised there is a freeware version available as well. Don't know if it has all the options though.

Yes, you can do that. It is really simple. If you have a registry editor, this is what you have to change:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\Settings
Change "SMSNoSentMsg" value from 1 to 0 in order to get the confirmation!
Another way of doing exactly that is to install the cab file I am attaching.
Thank you guys for your replies!
But Owendavies and Chris Cross Solution is the one i mentioned in my first post?

So i will check out the jgui sms report eraser, but it´s freeware in the standard version, can´t find a big difference to the pro version
i tried the hd tweak for delivery reports
but i'm still getting a text to say its been delivered
which is actually quite annoying lol
i like to know that the message has been delivered but i just want it to tell me, rather than sending a text
i have unticked the stand message options and used the hd tweak version but i'm still getting a text
any ideas please thanks
I don't think that somebody has figure it out yet.
I don't know if this just a problem with my phone, but I can't see what time a text was sent if it wasn't sent today. After I select a message marked yesterday or some other past date, I click on "View message details," and I just see the date it was sent or "yesterday."
I checked a friend's Samsung Moment, and it displayed the time the message was sent, no matter when it was sent! Did I do something to screw up my phone? I am not technically proficient, just followed these guides to root and flash a ROM on my phone. I have Fresh ROM 1.1 (you got skills flipzmode) running with MoDaCo's Custom Kernel 1.2 (modaco, you're sick, too), and a clear theme on top of it all.

Are you in Arizona? I believe if you search the forum or even google you will see people in that time zone complaining times are not correct.
No, I'm on the East Coast.
The problem isn't with traveling and receiving messages at different times, but just reading what time I received or sent a message. If a message was received sent any other day than today, I'm not able to see what time the person sent it or when I sent one.
When I was using handcent this wasn't a problem, just now with the stock messaging app. Could someone else confirm that this is a problem with my phone? Just open your stock messaging app, select a conversation that took place on a day other than today, and see if you can find out what time the message was sent or received.
It's a shortcoming of the HTC messaging app. Check the same message in Handcent and you'll see the timestamp when picking "View message details".
That's sad stuff. Thanks for the reply. I'll donate to whoever fixes it!
Edited to add: Is there a way to port over another messaging app? Maybe the one from the Moment?
Hey all, I'm new here but was looking for an outlet to announce applications. I have just finished up my first Android App and was hoping for some reviews/comments/suggestions. Criticism Encouraged!
Text Messenger is a simple away message application for your Android phone. There is a full version for $1, and a DEMO version (where you cannot change the default away message) for FREE.
Give it a try, then give it a Buy!
EDIT: updated barcodes to go directly to Android Market, rather than through AndroidZoom.
Just checking in to see if anyone had a chance to review my app, and had any comments/suggestions/criticism?
To make it easier to find I will post some barcodes (DEMO and Full Version) for the apps.
Thanks.

Don't mean to be mean, but don't people take a non-reply to mean that the recipient is away/busy ?
I can't test this because I use gvoice for texting.

That's alright, I know this isn't for everyone. With the current state of texting, especially with the younger crowd, I have seen many instances where people say "What the [email protected]#$ why aren't they texting me back!!!"...I guess this is more for those types.
Also, I find myself in situations where I really should not be reading/responding to text messages but I end up giving in knowing there is a message. With Text Messenger you can set your Away Message and automatically put your phone on silent at the same time. So when I am driving, in class, or anywhere else where I shouldn't be answering a text I do not feel the urge.
Pretty cool - few suggestions
Hey, just checked out the demo version of the app. I'm a brand new Android user. Coming from windows mobile I needed an app like this. Just a few thoughts as to what would make this an even better app. These are just suggestions and ways that I would like to be able to use the app.
1. Allow for profiles to be set up. Such as during certain user defined times, the app automatically sets an away status.
2. Allow for away statuses to be enable for specific contacts, like a black/white list.
3. Set up a quick reply list so I can select from some predefined messages such as "Call if it's an emergency", "In class"...
Keep us updated...
Nice app by the way

I do not know why you would not be able to find my app? Did you try scanning the barcodes I supplied? Do you have Android 2.2?
Anyways, I attached the apk for the DEMO Version of the app. In this version you can not change the away message, but if you purchase the full version for $1 USD the away message is completely customizable.
Thank you for the interest in my app!

Thanks for trying out my app.
I plan on adding a customizable list of away messages, so you can easily set "In class" etc...look for that update soon.
The Black List & Scheduled away messages are a great idea, although the initial decision creating the app was to make it as simple and quick as possible. Adding these features would be great, but also add more complication. I suppose there is no harm in adding these as optional features though, since if people wanted a quick easy solution they could simply not enable them.
I will keep you updated on the changes coming, look for your #1 to definitely be added with the possibility of #2 and/or #3.
Thanks again for trying my app, and leaving feedback!
P.S. Anyone else that has tried the app it would be great if you could rate it on the Android Market. Only a few people have rated it/commented, and I know many more have given it a try.
I like the demo app. I would like to try the full version but don't see it on the Market. I tried the posted barcode and it never loads the link in the browser.
Thanks,
I downloaded the donation version to be able to say what I want. What an awesome application. I can easily say one of my top 5 most useful. I set it when I'm driving, in a meeting, flying (in the air force) or when I'm busy with a million other things. Here is my list of features I would love to see, forgive me for any duplicates from any other post;
1. A widget! One that when pressed will turn on the auto reply AND have a drop down list of saves/pre-made responses.
2. Option to turn off notification bar icon, I hate that big green booger on my minimalist bar.
3. Option to save messages for future use through a quicky list
4. Option to have messages be contact specific (I would love to see this and would justify a higher price as it would make this an essential app, on par with SetCPU!)
5. Lastly, some notification of auto reply being sent, I'm currently not seeing one on my phone.

Thanks for giving it a try. If you press the menu button when in the DEMO Version there should be an option for "More Apps" this will bring you to the Android Market where you can see the FULL Version. I also attached a different barcode, this should link directly to the market rather than through AndroidZoom...let me know if that works for you? Otherwise just search "Robott Creations" or "Text Messenger" on the Android Market.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have heard more than once the need for customizable preset messages & option to turn off the notification "booger". I look to add those features this week. The rest of the suggestions I also agree with, and will hopefully work them in. I was looking to keep the app extremely simple, but the feedback so far has made it sound like the app is "too simple".

I am not too familiar with the Belgium Android Community, but it sounded like you said you are unable to buy any apps? If so, I do not know what I can do about that. But I will look into comparability for Android 1.6.
Thanks everyone, the feedback I have been getting has been excellent. I look to add some of these features shortly and supply you with exactly what you are looking for.
Version 1.5 Released
I read all the suggestions, and am trying to get them in ASAP.
Here are some features to hold you over until the next Update.
New to Version 1.5
------------------
* Custom preset Away Messages
- Easy interaction via Context Menu
* Enable/Disable Notifications
* Text Forwarding (Currently only supports other Phone #s)
* Minor Cosmetic Fixes
More Updates Coming Soon!
I hope the Android 1.6 support will be there soon. Such a lovely app ...

Both depend on the support of the project. Currently I have been hearing good feedback, but the number of downloads does not assure me it would be worth the time of creating an Android 1.6 version and/or porting to Windows Mobile.
I am currently working towards Version 2.0, and after that I will investigate porting and 1.6 support.
Thank you both for showing interest.
Any way of choosing which Apps this works with, as just had it in a weird loop on my facebook status. As I have fb notifacations sent to my mobile via texts, its put all away messages on my facebook, then as I had a new post, got sent a new text, which then triggered another away message...... Turned it off for now, but really good and usefull app, if you can have it only work with chosen apps. Like Handcent only.
Did you know the Evo 4G has a secret second notification LED? It's true! Located on the right side of the speaker near the Sprint logo, the so-called WiMAX LED was added by HTC but never put to work. With WiMAX Message Notifier, you can put this LED to good use.
---
Downloads below. If you have any issues, please, please, please read the release notes and FAQs before you post here.
If you get an FC, check logcat (e.g., using aLogcat) to see if there is a stack trace. Next, check to see if there is a log file on your SD card in the /WiMAXNotifier/logs/ directory. If you find anything, please post it here, or let me know if there are still no logs.
IMPORTANT: Uninstall any previous version of WiMAX Notifier before installing the latest one! That shouldn't be necessary in the future, but for now it is.
Market: coming soon! Either with the next version, or once I am confident that this version is stable.
Source code: evo-wimax-led-notifier Google Code project page
Release Notes:
Possible future improvements:
Support for email/missed call/voicemail/whatever notifications (requires research)
Revamp the UI (Just needs some time)
Coming soon
4G connectivity notifications (I mostly know how to do this)
GMail notifications
ETA: ???
v2011-01-30.2 BETA (current)
Non-broken version of what 2011-01-30.1 should have fixed. Needs testing on CM. Thanks pseudo_nomen!
If you are running a version older than v2011-01-23.1, you need to uninstall it before installing this version.
Ignore all texts from sender 9016 - these are Sprint notifications. This should really fix the voicemail-causing-light-to-get-stuck-on bug.
v2011-01-30.1 BETA (broken, don't use)
Hopefully fixed the issue where new voicemail notifications would cause the LED to come on and get stuck on. I have no idea if this will work on CyanogenMod or with any given messaging app.
If you are running a version older than v2011-01-23.1, you need to uninstall it before installing this version.
Examine incoming SMSes and try to determine whether they are text messages or voicemail control commands
v2011-01-24.1
Try to work around a bug in CyanogenMod. This should work on all ROMs, but if you already have v2011-01-23.1 and you aren't running CM, there's not any reason to upgrade.
If you are running a version older than v2011-01-23.1, you need to uninstall it before installing this version.
Check for ability to write to device, and try root if unable to. Hopefully this will work around a bug in CyanogenMod.
v2011-01-23.1
Almost completely re-written! Should be much faster and more reliable than bluedragon's version.
Uninstall old versions before installing this one!
Rewrote LED control code with a much less hacky version. Should be faster and more compatible across phones/ROMs.
Rewrote notification management code. Benefits: More stable, much faster detection of messages getting read, less battery usage (may not be noticeable)
New GUI. Currently looks pretty awful, as it was not a priority in this version.
App will now check to make sure the WiMAX LED is available whenever you start it. If you get a message saying "Your phone/ROM doesn't support the WiMAX LED!", post a message here with your hardware revision, ROM, and kernel.
Prepared code for adding new features.
v2011-01-08.1 (doesn't work for some people)
I still haven't been able to track down the FCs. The only big change in this version is the addition of a lot more logging - hopefully I'll finally be able to catch them.
More logging to try and catch those elusive FCs.
Move "Reset LED" to the main screen of the app instead of having it in a menu.
v2011-01-04 19:11
Initial release. There will still probably be FCs. I am trying to track down where they are coming from.
Added a "Reset LED" option in case the service crashes without disabling the LED. You can access it by opening the app and pressing menu. It will turn the LED off (but won't mark your messages as read).
* This is an update of the abandoned WiMAX Message Notifier project by bluedragon742. The primary goal is to fix the random Force Closes present in bluedragon's version. I may also add additional features at a later point.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
Q. How do I stop the normal LED from coming on? I don't need both!
A. From the launcher, press Menu and go to Settings --> Display --> Notification flash. You can then uncheck SMS/MMS. If you want to disable the built-in vibration/sound, or if you are using a non-stock messaging app, you should check the settings in all of the messaging apps you have installed.
Q. How much does this app cost?
A. For XDA members, it's free. There will be a paid version in the Market at some point, probably for $0.99. Of course, donations are always gladly accepted. If you're too cheap/broke to send me a buck or two, Dropbox signups through my referral link are always appreciated.
Q. Is this app ad-supported?
A. Nope. There really isn't any way I can think of to add ads.
Q. Does this app require root?
A. No.
Q. Is ____ feature supported?
A. Currently this app only handles SMS and MMS messages. I will hopefully be able to support incoming/missed calls, new voicemails, and GMail in future releases.
Q. Will this app drain my battery?
A. This app runs in the background via a Broadcast Receiver and only runs the service while the LED is on which therefore should not kill your battery.
Q. Can you support ____ rate or _____ color?
A. I am limited to what colors and rates are provided by the system.
Q. Are you using all of the available rates and colors?
A. Yes
Q. Will this work with my current SMS/MMS app and do I have to disable any notifications?
A. This app is designed to compliment, or work along side, your existing SMS/MMS app meaning that you should not have to disable anything in order for this app to work properly. It has been tested with the stock SMS/MMS app, Handcent, and Chomp.
Q. Do you have a Twitter account that I can follow to track your progress?
A. No. All progress will be posted in this thread, so you might have to dig through it.
Q. How do I live test the SMS and MMS notifications to make sure they work correctly?
A. Simple - send yourself an e-mail to "[your 10-digit number]@messaging.sprintpcs.com" for SMS or "[your 10-digit number]@pm.sprint.com" for MMS
Q. Does the message service always run in the background?
A. No. It is started when a new message is received and killed when the message has been read.
Q. What should I do if this app force closes?
A. Post here with the contents of the file "/sdcard/WiMAXNotifier/logs/wmnTrace_XXXXX.stack" if one exists and a dump from LogCat so that I may see what is causing the problem and fix it quickly. The .stack file is just a normal text file; you can rename it to .txt and attach it to your post, or open it in a text editor and copy the contents to Pastebin.com then post a link.
Q. Why does this app require Internet permissions?
A. In order for the hyperlinks in the About dialog to work correctly. (Full permissions list coming soon!)
Reserved for possible future use.
Niiice, glad to see a new thread. Thanks for keeping it alive and hopefully updated.

I'm not too surprised - I only fixed a few very minor things in this release. My main goal was to add the turn off led feature and get a new thread started. I plan to look more closely at it this weekend.
Do you recomend us removing the update from November/December and installing the january update from scratch. Or is it ok to just installe the new version over the older one?

It probably won't even install over the old one if you tried.

WiMAX Message Notifier redux [2011-01-04]
Does it FC, or what?

Yes. It does it only a few times. I had to factory rest my phone (unrelated issues) and have not been using an ATK and have had zero issues (with the redux). But I hope you stick with this because it is my most useful app

Thanks again Ninja! It has been working perfectly for me ever since you re-did it. Is there any way you can make this compatible with gingerbread? I tried installing it on dc13/evokings titanium black project x GBv3 and it wouldn't work.
I got my first force close since installing the "new" app. I could not find an error file on my sd card.
Hey all - been working on this off and on for a while but I've finally got it in a place where it works to how I envisioned it so I'm super excited to share it with you all!
These days people expect instant replies to their instant messages & it's not always possible to oblige.
Texting & driving is dangerous, your boss probably isn't keen on your messaging at work, you might be in a meeting, you might have left your phone to go workout.. Fortunately, in any given situation, Can't Talk will respond for you.
Let people know you're busy, you're driving, you're in a meeting, you'll get back to them later.. You set the message, you set who & via which apps to respond to & Can't Talk does the rest.
It's "out of office" but not just limited to email. Whatsapp, Slack, SMS, missed calls, Telegram, Hangouts, Allo.. any app that let's you send a quick reply via it's notification - Can't Talk can respond to.
Features of note:
- You can auto reply to sms & missed calls as well as app notifications
- You can specify which apps can be replied to
- You can specific which contacts can be auto-replied to (this includes across apps like Whatsapp etc..)
- You get to specify the message that gets sent.
Features of note to come:
- Multiple profiles - so you can create a "work profile" or a "home profile" or a "driving profile" with specific responses/settings
- Contextual Switching - the ability to automatically turn profiles on & off depending on whether you're driving, in the office, at home etc..
- Contact specific responses
At this stage I'd really love your feedback on the app so far (this is a beta so there may be bugs) & more specifically what more would you want from an app like this?
Any and all feedback/suggestions would be hugely appreciated!
Beta on the Play Store here
Huge update now on the Play Store
Added support for messaging apps such as Whatsapp, Hangouts etc..
Fixed a number of bugs
Added support for contact specific replies
Would love ANY feedback on the app! Happy Friday everyone!!
New update will be on the Play Store shortly, lots of bug fixes & a much tidier UI ??
Nice app but second reply time is 12 min after the first reply to the same person that not good. it should be the frequent reply. or is it work without the internet?

Thanks for the feedback! Was it a reply to the same message, & which app was it replying too (whatsapp, sms, etc)? There is a setting under Advanced Settings to change the reply frequency, it defaults to 15 minutes meaning it'll auto reply to any NEW messages you receive from the same contact or app after 15 minutes.
If you have a better idea about how reply frequency should work I'm all ears Maybe people want the option to reply to 1 contact 1 time ever, until the app is switched off?
New beta is up! Ton of bug fixes, some layout improvements.. Feedback as always is encourage
Messenger?
Does this (can this) work with Facebook Messenger?
Finally an extremely useful app thank you...

Interesting application buddy. Love the opening animations.
One thing I found annoying, is that for almost anything I changed, there was no "Save" button. Thus I had to first click "Back" arrow and then a prompt would ask if I want to save or discard. Could have used only a single click if there was a "Save" button.
Also, there needs to be some modification for the secondary text field, e.g. Apps Secondary or Advanced Secondary.

How would you know who had joined the beta, though? When I click the "Become a tester" button on the play store, does it send my email to the developer?
after I have enabled Notification Access, it is consuming 310MB RAM in a 3GB RAM Device, is it normal?

Hi
This looks a very interesting app but I don't seem to be able to download it. There is no Install button on the app page.
Sounds nice, gonna give it a whirl
I joined the beta program through the app in the store instead of the link in the op, is it ok? Since that was a browser redirect and sign in page, so i just took a shortcut.

It should work with any apps that support quick reply from their notifications so while I've not tested it with FB messenger, in theory it should work ?

That's an excellent point - tbh the app actually left beta yesterday & I'd actually forgot to remove that caption from the OP ?
However since it was mentioned in the Portal post more people have downloaded & I'm guessing that's a big part of the reason so I'll honour that commitment.
Let's say.. anyone who's commented on the thread or liked the OP I'll send a promo code to. Anyone left hanging in 2 weeks (when the trial expires) will hopefully email me & they'll get one too. Unless anyone has a better way to go about it? ?

Tbh mate I've not looked at RAM usage at all seeing as the app does nothing in the background whatsoever - until you receive a notification/SMS etc.. although judging by my other app ReadItToMe that sounds about right.
I'll do some testing but unless it's causing you an issue I wouldn't worry
