if i open maps and try to find my current location, it's fast. when i'm in the car and driving... and my wife uses the google nav to get us to a new location... it can't lock on my location. i've left it on for 10+ mins and it cannot find my location. this has happened on multiple roms and in multiple locations.
i'm currently using mdj's cm7.
I had this issue before as well. After some researching on these forums and HTC's forums, it was known that for some reason, our phone takes a while to retrieve the navigation data. It can take up to 20 minutes to "warm up." HTC is already aware of the issue and they're trying to come up with a fix.
However what I do to prevent the phone from warming up all the time, I just leave GPS on and this worked! Instead of waiting 10+ minutes for navi to work, it takes no more than a minute. Sometimes even instant. So just try to leave gps on all the time and you should be fine.
I do leave the GPS on. I found a thread in the dhd section about GPS issues with some tips. I'm going to see if any of those help.

This works. Sounds general, but make sure in Settings>Locations 'USE GPS Satellites is ticked(check-marked....or whatever )
I have faster fix, it's already set to north America. I don't have sense. I think the problem is a result of me running the nav app while driving. I think I have to get a fix before running the nav.

I had to reflash the radio once to get my gps working right. No matter what I did my gps wouldn't use the satellites but after the flash I was all good.

I picked up my sensation today and I cant get an accurate GPS location. It tells me im a few blocks away even with WI-FI on.
Anyone else experience this?
Yeah mate, same here, my gps is stoned! I'm in France for work and last night I couldnt get my phone to tell me so! He thought I was in London.
I'm tempted to do a factory reset its so bad. I can't even navigate, it keeps loosing me.
Hope htc will addresses this in a firmware update.

This is my fourth Android device, and it certainly has something wrong with the GPS. I agree... It is getting a good satellite fix, but sometimes the location is off by several hundred feet - way beyond typical GPS errors.

My GPS seems to be working well. Or at least as well as my Nexus One and iPhone 4. (That's in Hong Kong and South China).
Mine works fine.

Dang (to put it mildly).
This is not the thread I wanted to see. I was out walking in NY yesterday and my Galaxy S again had me a block from my real location, with the compass spinning like a top. Few things piss me off at a phone more than flaky GPS when I really need it to work. I'm so hoping the Sensation will resolve this problem.
Please let these reports be some tiny minority, and fixable.
I drove in to work today (from Brooklyn to Manhattan), with the intention of testing the Sensation's GPS. The phone instantly picked up my location (GPS only, "use wireless networks" unchecked), and had the accuracy down to "within 50 feet" in a few seconds. During the drive, the only time it lost connection was when I was in the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. I found the GPS performance identical to the MT4G, which was excellent. Plain and simple, the Sensation's GPS capability works as it should.
My gps works flawlessly...it's just you dude LOL no firmware update needed

Mine is flawless. I never have time to click "my location" in google maps it's so fast.
Looks like it's great for Yanks. Or maybe the T-Mobile version has better GPS? Pure speculation... just throwing it out there.

After a factory reset, it seems to pick it up a lot better. I'll have to test while driving.
I have been dependent on GPS for years! Lol

My gps has had problems also. What I did was just turn off the phone and switch it back on. That has solved my gps problem.

I'm gonna replace it. I cant get any kind on signal with just GPS satellites and not from wireless networks.
Its really sad too because besides the gps this phone is flawless.
After having the Samsung Vibrant and all its gps woes I almost cried when it found me so fast within, seriously, like 10 feet of where I was standing in my house.
It's definitely a hardware issue. I'm about to replace it, ill update the post soon

Just got my phone and tested the GPS. It picked up my location (with no mobile data enabled) in about 15 seconds. That was outside though, I couldn't get any GPS signal while was inside the house, and GPS test app located only 1 satellite, too... My dell streak finds like 17 of them when I search =(.
My new phone is better but not as good as my G2. Navigation is exceptional.

My gps is kinda ****ty. I use My Tracks multiple times a day while riding my motorcycle. Ever since I got this phone it stops recording partway through my 20 minute commute.
I really hope its an easy fix. I love this phone so far but this is really a deal breaker. I use GPS a lot.
I am running VB FB Edition and one thing I have noticed is that my Gps does not work. I would like to use the navigation feature but it seems never to get a lock on. There is many apps in the market that say they fix Gps issues. But what does everyone use to get Gps working? Can some advise me? Thanks for all your input.

Somewhere within the VB black thread I think the apk for angrygps is posted. That was suggested for a while to fix the gps issues.
I have not read anybody else with gps problems on FB's VB. You may need to reflash, or clear caches and fix permissions.
Ok I found my issue under development for some reason I had enabled mock gps location enabled. What is that feature for?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
It can enable you to set a different location from where you actually are. For example, if you use any of the maps/location features that show you stuff around you, say hotels, you can use a mock location of where you're headed (say New York City) vs. where you are now (on the highway in New Jersey) to get what's close to that location.
Clear as mud, right?
Also, you can use mock location for development purposes in case you're making an app that uses a GPS location and you don't get a real GPS location, or testing to see if your app will work with different coordinates and how it will react.
EDIT
Woohoo this was my 2000th post!

I am having a similar issue, but mine takes a good 10 minutes to lock on a signal. This is with a clear sky view and using google maps.
It seems to be getting worse lately. I am on Root66 with the bootloader still locked by the way.
I'm having the same issue as well. It was working like a champ before I flashed CM10.

I truly think it's because we all know Samsung makes great phones, but they lack in the radio department.mine takes a while sometimes even with a clear view of the sky.I think a good update to fix these radio issues would help out allot, unless our xda community can step in before especially now with an unlocked Bootloader

This fixed my issues as well
I'm also seeing trouble with my gps not locking. It's only been in the last couple days, and I've changed nothing since the time that it had been perfect.
Makes me think there's something satellite or google related?
Download "GPS Test" app from the market. Open the app. Go into settings and clear AGPS, then update AGPS. That worked for me. Try that before you Odin back to stock.

As previously stated, I am NOT using CM10... I tried to download "GPS Test" 5 times and got an error 491 all 5 times (with wifi on or off, did not matter).
EDIT: I restarted my phone and then it downloaded just fine... that is another annoying issue!
GPS
My phone with the stock Rom would generally asquire a GPS lock quickly, but tended to lose it more often than other phones. However, on CM 10 I have had trouble locking as well. For me if I put my phone on the dashboard I usually get a lock in about thirty seconds. I know that doesn't fix it for you, but it is the workaround I've been using so far.
Put a modified gps.conf on.
Use fasterfix and pick a local NTP server.
Turn on google A-GPS (Location services).
It still doesn't lock through objects as well, but it's quick outdoors.

I can confirm that this worked for me as well. Also, when I have locking issues in Maps or Waze, I just launch GPS Test and wait until the "In Use" # of satelittes is 2 or more. When I subsequently go back to Maps or Waze, I get an immediate lock.

I wrote up a lot about this for my previous device, the htc mytouch 4g slide. See this thread for some gps.conf info:

GPS is a real big deal for me, I use the smartphone to get to/from work daily, and my job takes me all over the country so I am never familiar with where I am.
The SGSIII locks quick and accurately outdoors with only gps turned on for location services.
Totally stock, and haven't put it through it's paces yet, but been wandering around in west virginia all day and it's been great.
Clear view of the sky is necessary for good gps function, so trying to use indoors or even under lots of trees is a stretch.
Outside, maybe in a parking lot or field, would be the best place to try to use gps.

I found that flashing back to the actual verizon f2 build and then rooting without flashing a deodexed stock rom helped to retain gps with other TW roms like beans or synergy.
Right now I still think that CM10 is risky and you might need to flash stock back on your phone if things stop working like they used to.

thanks
I came from the samsung fascinate which had horrible GPS service for the first 6 months. OTA's were sent out to fix it but it never really worked well. I tried all sorts of programs and configs and deleting files, etc, which might have helped some but never great until one of the devs fixed the issue in the kernel. After that I could get instant lock indoors/outdoors/cloudy skies/etc.... super annoying to go back to a crappy GPS.

I tried this app, it didn't work as I had hoped. At first the app was successful at getting a quicker GPS lock than Maps, but after clearing & updating AGPS, it takes even LONGER for it to lock!
Has anyone else found another method to fix this?
PS: my phone is stock.
others have also suggested using Gps Status & Toolbox, similar to Gps Test.

That's my preference for on the fly.
I took a look at the gps.conf file, seems like it could be better then it is stock at first brush.
Not sure how much or often I can give time at the moment, but tweaking it is on my list.

Hey everyone, hope someone can help.
I love Google now, and use it every day. But I've been getting an annoying issue constantly.
I'm getting commute cards coming up all the time saying I'm 39 minutes away, 45 minutes away etc... from my home location. I did some closer looking and noticed that its not getting my correct location. Google Now (and Google maps) seems to think I'm elsewhere, when I'm actually at home. I also noticed that when launching Google maps, it shows the wrong location on boot, then fixes to my GPS location.
I'm annoyed by this because it use to work perfect a couple weeks back, and that I use this on a daily basis for bus route times. I can't use it now because its giving me bus routes and times from the location Google thinks I'm at.
Here's some information about my phone:
- Liquid ROM
- Latest Google Search from Play Store
- Wi-Fi off, GPS on, Data on.
Hope someone can help me out.

It is enabled.
After doing some research, many people are saying that using WiFi will help out pinning my location.
So for my next test, im turning on WiFi, and disabling background location reporting. I found that background location reporting didn't do anything different to my Google Now data, and was a big battery drainer, making Google maps the top app draining my battery even though it wasn't being used.

I've been running the 10.1 nightly for a while now, and I'm pretty sure this problem has been present all along. I just haven't gotten around to posting about it.
Basically, my phone is just bad at pinpointing my location using Maps or any other app. It will hone in on a fairly large circle of maybe 10 blocks, but can't get any more precise than that. I don't remember ever seeing this issue before flashing 10.1, and was just wondering if this is a known issue or if there are any fixes.
Everything else with the phone works just fine.
Sounds like it's only using cell towers to pinpoint your location. I'm assuming GPS is actually turned on? You can try an app from the market called faster GPS to nominate what region you're in, that might help.
