Just a couple questions that might help someone fix your problem....
Are you using windows or mac?
Are you using the hack-ace.cmd that came in the zip or did you replace that one with the V11b cmd?

Im using win 7 64bit and i just used the cmd that was there. I searched the forum and came to one that told me to press vol up and power, and then the phone turned off and now im back. I'm still up to step three on the ace hack kit but my phone is still the same as before, i dont know what has changed.

Well to be honest with you, anytime someone has trouble with the hack kit....attn1 always tells people to use v11b (all you do is download it from the forum, delete that one, that is in the file you created after unzipping and replace it with the new one, then rerun the hack kit....
Unless someone else has a better idea....

Hello, I tried to turn the phone on in "hboot" using vol up and power and it worked. Then I put the Android Revolution 4G ROM on it along with the EXT4 data partion thing. Now when I come to the hboot again, it doesnt give me the option to install zip from sd card. What do I do?

That rom needs to be flashed in recovery, and I assume you allready have rom manager installed and flashed clockworkmod recovery....
Then to get into recovery you turn on the phone using power and volume "down" (not volume up) and then scroll down to recovery...
Also when you get to hboot...does you phone say S-off at the top?

I don't have rom manager or clockwork recovery mod, and my phone hasn't even been rooted yet? I will try the process again but with 11b.
Also: My mistake, when i press "vol down and power" it goes into hboot, and vol up doesn't do anything.
And from hboot, i choose recovery, and then i get a phone with a red triangle exclamation mark. I think that is recovery. Then it still doesn't give me any option to install any roms or zips. It just has:
Reboot system now
Apply sdcard: update.zip
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partion
theres also an Error: Can't open /cache/recovery/command
Thanks.

Yeah, you definitely need to get it rooted before you can start flashing any roms....and recovery wont give you the option to flash the zip because clockworkmod hasn't been flashed yet....and in order to flash clockworkmod you need rom manager, which requires root.....
Once you get all that done, when you go into recovery you will have a lot more options....
So just need to work on getting you phone to that root, s-off point.....

Thanks for your help, I re-did the a whole ace hack kit thing and it did the same thing as before. It would be going on its way, then, during part 3, the phone would go into recovery and then the cmd would flash: Error: device not found about 10 times then go back to the main menu. I dont know what to do, is this an error on my part?
Was the ace hack kit supposed to do anything? because my phone is still excactly the same, except for the fact that you can boot into hboot and recovery.

No it basically just downgrades your radio so that it can be to rooted, shouldn't really change your phone much yet....usually the problem is one of two things...
-bad gold card...something wasn't copied correctly, next time you try again you might try to get another gold card file...
-or something wrong with your SD card....you may try to format your SD card and try again...
Also....Did you miss or skip any of these steps.....
-do you have htc sync installed, and then uninstalled just leaving the drivers
-is your phone in charge only mode
-is usb debugging enabled
-is fast boot turned off
-all virus protection off (anti virus, windows defender, firewall)
All prior to downloading
Then are you you....
Downloading ace-hack-kit-v11a.zip...then unzipping to a folder of your choice....go in to that folder and delete....hack-ace.cmd.....then go back to this thread, download hack-ace.cmd v11b and stick that in your newly unzipped file...then of course run as administrator (windows..right click, run as administrator)
EDIT: You will know your successful when you get into hboot and see that s-off at the top of your screen.
EDIT2: there is also a link in the OP of the hack kit thread, that will give you the newest htc drivers for your computer that are a little more reliable....

Here just for future Reference, if you are able to get root/s-0ff.....here is a good path to follow
Download this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
(either the side loading or no side loading one, it wont matter since you plan on flashing a custom rom)
-Rename the zip to PD98IMG.zip (it has to be named exactly that)
-place it in the root of your SD card
-reboot to hboot (power volume down)
-dont press anything, it will find the zip, after 3 attempts and ask you if you want to update, volume up to update.
This rom will give you the newest updated radio and OTA updates...that way you have the fast download speeds.
Then download rom manager from the market, go into rom manager and flash clockworkmod recovery...reboot your phone (optional, but I've found it helps)...go back into rom manger and reboot into recovery....From there you can (wipe data/facory reset, wipe cache, dalvik cache, and start flashing your android revolution rom.
Definitely not the only path to follow, but its a nice safe one that will get you what you need. Hope this helps, and Good luck

Thanks.
I tried it again, making sure I did all those things bit it still stopped.
I opened the cmd file and in the section that it got stuffed up:

Did you try formatting your SD card first, not a quick format, but a full format..I know it takes like a half hour or so to format....If so, then you will probably need to get help from attn1.....Here is the link for his irc channel, but he probably wont be there till tomorrow....also try posting your problem in the hack kit thread in the dev forum....
Hopefully someone else can step in and fix your problem.....

Hello, I ended up using Bubby's One Click GUI, and it is great, I'm in the process of rooting and its working well. After this would I be able to flash Android Revolution 4G and some themes?

So does that mean I don't need to load a rom into the romzip folder of the ace hack kit before I start this process?
I plan on going with the LeeDrOiD rom, but do I put it in the ace kit? Or flash it from the sdcard after I finish the ace hack kit?
My romzip folder in the ace kit just has the text file saying "put-rom.zip-here.txt"
I have my goldcard img in the gcimg folder.
I have been reading thru numerous threads in preparation for the process, but the more I read the more intense it gets. It went from "just rooting and flashing a rom" to now trying to figure out the whole rom/radio/Ril/kernel upgrade/compatibility mix...

The ace hack kit is very straight forward. load the rom afterwards with cwm. make sure your SD card is formatted the right way. Then run the cmd program and follow the instructions via the effen manual.

You can put the LeeDroid rom in the romzip folder or flash it in recovery after you finish the hack kit. I tend to go the simple route and flash a new rom in recovery after it's rooted.

No, you don't need to load the rom there. You need to downgrade first. Then after that you can flash a rom

Question about rooting and flashing recovery image..

Just curious, what happens if I follow the rooting steps in the other thread but only do this:
adb push /directory_you_placed_asroot2/asroot2 /data/local/
adb shell
chmod 0755 /data/local/asroot2
/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd /system/bin
cat sh > su
chmod 4755 su
At this point, what state is the phone in? Do I have full root access to the file system? What are the issues/concerns if I don't proceed with flashing the recovery image. Just trying to understand the process and what each step is for. I understand the part above but can't understand why you have to flash a recovery image and can't just use the phone after root is achieved.
Thanks in advance. FYI...all I want to do with root access is delete some system files, nothing more.

You don't have to flash the recovery image. I believe from that code you would have root and can run programs that require root. However, you would be unable to flash a new rom or any other update.zip (which means no auto apps2sd), partition your sd card easily or backup your phone in case something goes wrong. I suppose you are probably just asking for the sake of asking and knowledge but this is why a recovery image is HIGHLY recommended.

thanks. So if I don't flash the recovery image, I can't update to cooked ROMs or do the stuff you suggested but will the phone otherwise function normal? i.e. I can update to a Sprint/HTC update, I can factory reset the phone (assuming that'll kill root), etc.? I may do the whole process with the recovery image later but don't need it right now.
I only need to do this as a stopgap until Sprint/HTC releases an update.

Well, I wouldnt recommend doing a sprint update either. That will cause you to lose root most likely. The only way then to keep root is wait until we get a dump of the update and then cook a rom that includes root, in which case you would need to flash the recovery image. Updates usually fix the exploits we use to gain root.

What he said...but yes, at the steps you quoted, mobilehavoc, you are capable of root access (you don't actually have it until you run that "su" command ). That allows you to read and modify otherwise locked away files and tweak to your hearts content!
Ive rooted and played around some but very little and followed everyones instructions very closely ( thank you for teaching a newbie ). Now how do I go back to original state that I backed up ( think I did ).
When I press the power and volume down button I get to the droid on skateboard, then I press the Home for recovery. I get the screen with all the options and I go to nandroid v2.2 restore and press trackball. It says restore latest backup press home to confirm. I do that and get the following error
Error : run 'nandroid-mobile.sh restore' via console.
What does this mean? Do i have to be tethered to PC and run this command from cmd prompt?
I am now lost again, any help is appreciated

You must do a backup BEFORE you can do a restore..
To clarify for everyone, here's a breakdown of the steps:
adb push /directory_you_placed_asroot2/asroot2 /data/local/
This copies the asroot2 program to the /data/local folder on your phone.
adb shell
This logs you into the phone. From here on out, you are no longer executing Windows commands from a DOS shell - you are actually executing Linux commands on the phone.
chmod 0755 /data/local/asroot2
This changes the permissions on the asroot2 program so that it can be executed.
/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
This actually runs the root exploit and creates a file called /system/bin/sh that we will later turn into su.
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
This unmounts the /system partition and remounts it as writeable.
cd /system/bin
This puts you into the /system/bin folder.
cat sh > su
This creates the su program.
chmod 4755 su
This changes the persmissions on the su file to allow it to be executed.

"I get the screen with all the options and I go to nandroid v2.2 restore and press trackball. It says restore latest backup press home to confirm. I do that and get the following error"
Go there but select Backup instead of Restore.
Turn the phone off, hold the Home key, and turn it on. When you get to the screen with the green text select nandroid backup.

110 Error RUU 1.56 Fix - 100% unroot too!

Update - 2/21/2011
If you have bricked an HTC EVO this will likely NOT work for you and this is the wrong info to be reading. I have gotten a few emails from this link about EVO 110 errors.
12/26/2010 - This thread is super old now:
If you ran the 1.56 RUU and your phone no longer turns on visit htc.com, go to support, choose Hero (Sprint) and download the 2.1 system update.
Remove battery from your phone and start it up again, then run the exe file that you just downloaded -
http://member.america.htc.com/downlo...2.27.651.6.exe
------All the info below is kept for reference -------
(As of 3/31/2010 - I am 10 for 10 for getting these back and working!! 3/3 of going back to 100% stock)
Edit: I have no longer kept track... its been over a month and I know personally I've done about 15 more of these... with about half being return to stock.
If you need to contact me, PLEASE EMAIL instead of using private messages, it'll probably turn into a google talk chat anyways, so add me on there, [email protected] (Its just easier than having to log in here and reply to private messages, since I get emails on the go as well.)
So you just ran the 1.56 RUU and got a 110 error. Now your screen turns on and stays black and if you plug the phone into USB you see the HTC logo. Unplug it and see the RUU menu.
Like you, I decided to attempt to roll back using the RUU 1.56. I was hit with the 110 error, and nothing but fastboot would work, I was able to launch ./fastboot-mac oem boot to get into the system.
I tried ./fastboot-mac boot image/bootname.img and a billion other things like everyone else who is having the issue, but just like them I had no success. In the second post below are the steps to resolve this issue. This will either take you to your first Nandroid backup or to whatever ROM you choose to flash once you get recovery back. I have not found a way to get back to 100% stock, but at least your phone wont be a brick.
EDIT:As of 3/30/2010 @ 8:30 PM I was able to get my phone completely 100% to stock. I was able to do this by retrieving a Nandroid restore from someone who used flashrec to make their initial backup. This restore does not touch the recovery image but I was able to boot into my recovery then write the HTC recovery back on top of it. I now have 100% un-rooted phone. See Post number 2 for the right way to do this.?
I've helped a few people over log me in now.
I'm willing to continue doing this but it is cutting into my family time, I will do this for a "respectable" amount of money.
Feel like I've helped you??
Buy me some coffee!
(Zip attached includes fix and stock folders. Use the fix folder FIRST to get completely booted. You can use the stock folder if you want to get 100% stock after you have a running unrooted system but have RA recovery.)
Steps to resolve:
(You SHOULD have a Nandroid backup of some sort, if not download a ROM... Fresh1.1??)
1) Boot the phone to black screen
2) Plug phone into PC/MAC - The HTC logo should appear at this point
---- If you've been doing anything else, rerun the RUU and let it fail and reboot to the HTC logo.
3) PC - fastboot oem boot | MAC - ./fastboot oem boot
(Make sure you turn on USB Debugging under Settings --> Applications --> Developer)
4) Root your phone using asroot2
Code:
adb push asroot2 /data/local/
adb shell chmod 0755 /data/local/asroot2
adb shell
/data/local/asroot2 /system/bin/sh
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd /system/bin
cat sh > su
chmod 4775 su
5) This is where your Nandroid backup comes into play.
(Browse to your nandroid folder, find your first backup and copy all of the .img files except system and cache to your SD card root directory)
NOTE: At this point you should dismount the SD card if you mounted inside of Android OS(Sense/Launcher)
6) run adb shell (PC - adb shell | Mac - ./adb shell)
7) type su
8) Run the following commands (if you get out of memory errors, type su again and try once more)
NOTE: Do not copy the "#"'s in the commands, the # just means you are running as SU, as opposed to the "$"
Code:
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
# flash_image boot /sdcard/boot.img
# flash_image misc /sdcard/misc.img
9) now... type reboot recovery
This time you should get your recovery menu, should have been RA or whatever you used... from there I did a complete nandroid restore and my system booted.
Also, after I did this I did try to let it boot without doing a recovery and it wouldnt go anywhere... but I'm fairly impatient... it may have wanted to load. I figured it best to do an entire Nandroid restore though.
-------------------------------------------------------------
100% Stock Configuration Work Around
-------------------------------------------------------------
Non-Rooted Nandroid Backup:
nandroid.7z
I was able to get my phone completely 100% to stock. I was able to do this by retrieving a Nandroid restore from someone who used flashrec to make their initial backup. This restore does not touch the recovery image but I was able to boot into my recovery then write the HTC recovery back on top of it. I now have 100% un-rooted phone. I'm not sure how to go about posting a 127MB file, what do you think it the best place?
After restoring the Nandroid backup I tried this:
Code:
Dustan-Bonneys-MacBook:tools dustanbonney$ ./adb shell
$ su
su: permission denied
Then I rebooted to recovery (I used RA 1.5.2)
Code:
Dustan-Bonneys-MacBook:tools dustanbonney$ ./adb remount
remount succeeded
Dustan-Bonneys-MacBook:tools dustanbonney$ ./adb shell
/ # mount -a
mount: mounting /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 on /system/sd failed: No such file or directory
/ # cd /sdcard
/sdcard # flash_image recovery /sdcard/Stock/recovery.img
flashing recovery from /sdcard/Stock/recovery.img
/sdcard # reboot recovery
I was booted to the Triangle and exclamation mark... I pulled the battery and booted up normally.
Stock Kernel - 2.6.27-533ce29d [email protected] )
Stock Build - 1.56.651.2 CL85027 release-keys
Other things that should be mentioned:
If you used RA 1.6.2 - I was unable to get my boot.img or the stock boot.img from the RUU's rom.zip to flash back to the recovery partition. I had to use the RA 1.6.2.img and "flash_image recovery /sdcard/recoverynamegoeshere.img"
It seems that if you've flashed the radio update, the RUU does not write the radio back successfully. Others have had issues going back to the stock radio using the upgrade.zip option as well.
I attempted to use the boot.img, recovery.img, from the RUU's rom.zip with no success. I might try it again. I was able to get to stock recovery (Triangle and exclamation) and to the Hboot menu... but from hboot I had to run the RUU and rebrick the device cause I couldnt get anything at that point, even fastboot oem boot wouldnt load.
There have been times when I get weird issues writing the flash recovery, boot, or misc and when you reboot and load "fastboot oem boot" it wont look like it goes anywhere.... check "adb devices" and your device should be listed. From there do an "adb remount" and then "adb shell" and reflash once more and then "reboot recovery".
If all else fails, I'm available for a small fee.

Wow! If you've fixed this, I think you're everyone's hero now. We won't have to worry about using the RUU now
I was going to try something similar to this today, but i was unable to brick my phone using the 1.56.651.2 RUU. I was running Flipz updated radio and DamageControl v2.0r2.. The RUU completed successfully..
I was reading over the forum post in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645002 and i read that you could boot the system using the command 'fastboot oem boot' I was going to try to use FlashRec to do the work of Flashing the recovery, then booting into recovery and use nandroid.. but you beat me to it! Good work!
I attempted flashing a new recovery image this way with no avail... I also attempted only
Code:
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
and still was unable to boot the phone into recovery. I think it had to have been something with doing boot.img and recovery.img at the same time... I dont know what the misc.img does and I'm assuming data.img is userdata... but I did them all and then it worked...
Other users also tried flashrec and with no success... right track though.

Trying this right now.
So far, am getting lots of "mtd: write error" and "mtd: re-read error" Out of memory errors for flashing the recovery image. Guess I'll give this some time, and try to su again and reflash? Or should I kill it as soon as the Out of memory errors pop up and try again?
If you get errors like...
adb shell
su
flash_image recovery .........
(out of memory... etc)
Then...
just su again... so you really su twice
its what I had to do.

Trying it a second time, and so far am getting a bunch of Out of memory errors. After the first one "finished," I did as you recommended and typed "su" a second time, and then typed the "flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img" command.
So far, looks like it's giving the same errors the second time around.
This second attempt, it ended with "error writing recovery: No space left on device."
Just to be sure, I checked the SD card, and that has over 1 GB of free space.
If you're willing to allow something like logmein.com or some way for me to remote assist you, I would like to try. [email protected] if you're in.

We ended up just needing to run
Code:
adb shell
reboot
fastboot oem boot
adb shell
su
//flash commands here
that seemed to do it. so make sure if you're having issues to restart the device and try again!
Edit: Also, we didnt get data.img to work so we only did boot, recovery, and misc.img's

[Guide] How to gain root on 2.2 for Mac

*******UPDATED 8/31/10 *******
This rooting method was adapted from regaw_leinad's method and toastcfh's method. By following these steps you will successfully downgrade your phone back to android 2.1 in order to gain root.
I don't trust unrevoked as I have had problems with it in the past.

I am not responsible for any damages to your phone.
special thanks to:
regaw_leinad
Sebastian Krahmer
Toastcfh
amon_ra
FILES YOU WILL NEED:
copy and paste into browser
Code:
sdx-downloads.com/sdx/evo/troot/eng-PC36IMG.zip
evo4g.me/downloads//count.php?target=evo-root.zip
files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/&file=recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img
developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
You will need the Android SDK in order to communicate between your computer and your phone. Download it (last link above) and follow the setup instructions that it comes with.
Unzip the contents of the evo-root.zip and put all the files from it into the tools folder located in the android sdk folder.
Rename the eng-PC36IMG.zip to PC36IMG.zip and then put it the tools folder located in the android sdk folder. DO NOT UNZIP IT!

******* PC36IMG.zip md5sum~ fe8aba99893c766b8c4fd0a2734e4738 *******
Move the recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img into the android sdk folder as well.
Make sure usb debugging is enabled on your device. To do so go to Settings > Applications > Development > and make sure the check box is checked.
Plug your phone into the computer. Select "Charge Only" from the notifications bar.
Open up terminal and navigate your way into the android sdk folder.
Code:
cd /
cd asdk
Push all the files onto your phone.
Code:
tools/adb push /asdk/tools/flash_image /sdcard/
tools/adb push /asdk/tools/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/
tools/adb push /asdk/tools/mtd-eng.img /sdcard/
tools/adb push /asdk/tools/PC36IMG.zip /sdcard/
tools/adb push /asdk/tools/recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img /sdcard/
Note that the PC36IMG.zip will take longer than the other files to transfer to the sdcard because it is a large file.

Now we will make rageagainstthecage.bin executable.
Code:
tools/adb shell
chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
You should see this (below) after it has made the change.
Code:
$
Now to use the rooted shell.
Code:
cd /data/local/tmp
./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
You will now see some text on your terminal screen describing the exploit.

Wait for the adb shell to finish the process. At this point it may or may not terminate the current shell session in terminal. If it does then it should look like this:
Code:
users-iMac:asdk user$
If it doesn't it will return to
Code:
$
in that case you need to exit the current session. To do so type
Code:
exit

Now we need initiate a new shell which should now have root permissions.
Enter the following:
Code:
tools/adb shell
and you will see you now have a
Code:
#
instead of
Code:
$
Now we need to flash the mdt-eng.img in order for it to let us install a custom recovery
Code:
adb shell
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
/data/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img
That will flash your misc partition with Toast's mtd-eng.img

This should return you to
Code:
#
Now boot into hBoot
Code:
reboot bootloader
This will reboot your phone into hBoot. It will scan for the PC36IMG.img. When it asks yes or no, select yes.
It should then reflash your phone into the engineering build.
When it asks to reboot select yes.
You will need to flash custom recovery in order to be able to flash other custom roms or modifications. I use Amon_RA's recovery because it works great and has NEVER caused me any problems.
Now, open up terminal and get back into the android sdk folder
Code:
cd /
cd asdk
Since we have already pushed the recovery onto the sdcard we only need to flash the recovery onto the phone so that we can use it
Code:
adb shell
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
/data/flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-evo-v1.8.0.img
Now lets rename that PC36IMG.zip file again
Code:
mv /sdcard/PC36IMG.zip /sdcard/eng-PC36IMG.zip
that way your phone doesn't try to flash it when you go into recovery each time
And last but not least we need to boot into it to flash a custom rom
Code:
reboot recovery
Your phone should then reboot into Amon_RA's recovery and you may now head over to the dev forum to find your new favorite custom rom.
very nice! can anyone confirm this? my buddy wants me to root his 2.2 and i would like to try this.
To make life easier for some people add this to your post mate, and apply it yourself if you would like.
Here is how to add your sdk/tools directory to your .bash_profile file so you won't have to navigate to the folder each time.
Download this so you'll be able to see your hidden files http://www.mediafire.com/?diimft1ninn Run it, check "Show Hidden Files" then click Restart finder. Now, navigate to your home folder (/Users/UserName/) and see if there's a .bash_profile already there. If not, create with textedit.
Now add this to the file: export PATH=${PATH}:/Path/Of/Your/Sdk/Tools/Folder
Mine is /Users/bmxrider4444/Documents/Android/SDK/tools
Now do not save it as rich text. If yours is in rich text, click on "Format" in the menu bar, and click "make plain text". Now save it as .bash_profile and uncheck "if no extension is provided, use .txt".
Now you can go back to Ghost and uncheck "Show all hidden files" and restart finder again (special thanks to ajones7279 for these steps)
Enjoy!
Just as clarification as to what this does, it enables you to run adb commands and other commands without having to navigate to the /android/tools/ folder every time you want to run adb or whatever.
does this work?

This is great! Thanks for the guide - I am planning on rooting my Wife's EVO but have been waiting for an easier method than the other one posted. Question on the above where we write "location of recovery-ra-evo-v1.8.0.img". Is that the exact code, or should we be adding a directory or folder location into this line? I rooted my 2.1 EVO on my Mac a couple months ago and don't remember this step. Once again - very much appreciate the help.
One last question - would it make more sense to have a custom ROM already on your SD Card prior to rooting, so that you can flash it right after you flash AMON-RA for the first time? Probably doesn't matter but thought i'd ask.
^^ same question as above, plus one other n00b question - does this method unlock NAND?

Don't trust us with the unrevoked 3.x/unrevoked forever application combo that's worked for thousands of users without sideeffects on regaw's post?
You should note to everyone that your method will screw up their PRI, reverting it back to 1.34. By using unrevoked and unrevoked forever, you can keep 1.40.

Thats not the exact code no. I just put that as a place holder you are suppose to put in the location of where you have the recovery.img. For example, the exact command for me would be:
Code:
/Users/seekis/Downloads/recovery-ra-evo-v1.8.0.img
Don't trust us with the unrevoked 3.x/unrevoked forever application combo that's worked for thousands of users without sideeffects on regaw's post?

As far as using unrevoked, I stated that I, ME, MYSELF, has had issues with it. not that anybody else has. By all means go and use it if you would like. I will not. It is true that you will loose PRI 1.40, but seeing as how even after installing the OTA from HTC my phone still didn't update it to 1.40, I don't see the issue.

Hey Seekis - question, I'm stuck here. I keep getting "permission denied", or "operation not permitted" when trying to make the exploit executable at this step:
chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
Am I missing something? I've tried a million times and can't seem to get past this. I've successfully pushed all the files onto the sdcard.
I've also have had some trouble finding the exact root path to these files. I've been able to navigate, but I would think a lot of users would have some trouble.
Regardless, many thanks for getting this posted...
EDIT: I pushed the rageagainstthecage file to the sdcard by mistake. Will try again tomorrow.
ok i got rid of that step by moving the file into the android sdk and pushing it with all the other files
Okay now I appear to be in big trouble as I've just messed up my wife's phone, and its probably going to be unusable for a while until I get this figured out (assuming I do!).
I got through most of the process. I flashed the PC36IMG.zip file; however when it asked to reboot, it just dumped me back into the bootloader. Whenever I say reboot, it just takes me back to the bootloader. Pull the battery, same thing - bootloader. Yikes.
I don't know how to get to the next step because I can't get into a booted rom in order to flash the amon-ra recovery. Am I totally effed? Can anyone help me here?
EDIT: Okay reflashed the PC36IMG.zip file, and it rebooted into the stock ROM. Onward! Phew!!
The wife's EVO is now fully rooted running Baked Snack 1.5 w/Netarchy's kernel. Touch and go there for a minute, but it all worked out. No 1.40 PRI, but I don't really care about that right now.
Woot! Thanks Seekis!!
do u have to push the pc36img with adb every time or will drag and drop work or copy and paste work?

Had the same issue. When i first booked into the bootloader i had to select recovery then flash PC36IMG.zip. Then boot loop. Then i went back into the bootloader and it automagically read in the PC36IMG.zip and flashed it, then i got stock 2.1 root. Just a few minutes of "oh crap"
I'm stuck. I got as far as flashing PC36IMG.zip, which was successful, as my phone now runs 2.1, but it doesn't appear I'm rooted. When I go back into the adb shell, I'm getting the $ prompt, and running
Code:
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
gives me a permission denied error. Help!

So after you flash PC36IMG.zip you should automatically get a root (#) prompt when going into the shell? ie, I'll have rooted 2.1 yes?

Aha. Ok, I will keep trying til it gives me a root shell, I guess. I also tried unrevoked3 but that didn't seem to work.
Success!! So, I stupidly assumed that all PC36IMG.zip's were the same, and was using the one from the original 2.2 PC thread. Once I got the correct one, voila!
You might want to post the md5 of the one you are using, so there's no confusion for others. Also, you missed a tiny step when you first start up hboot - you have to select fastboot for it to start scanning for PC36IMG.zip.
Thanks!

[GUIDE] Safer way to unroot and revert to stock myTouch 3G 1.2

This method we will use nandroid's recovery option in ClockworkMod
Requirements:
Rooted myTouch 3G 1.2 with USB Debugging
ClockworkMod Recovery Installed (can be install from ROM Manager)
Universal Androot apk saved to your AndroidSDK tools folder
(I will be doing this in adb)
Create the recovery folders
Code:
mkdir /sdcard/clockworkmod
mkdir /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup
mkdir /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/Stock
Mount the SD card so you can access it on your computer.
Now extract SAPPIMG_Sapphire_T-Mobile_US_2.10.531.4_release_signed.zip (from shipped-roms) [FYI: I had to use 7zip for this] into clockworkmod/backup/Stock.
Now we are down with that unmount it and return to adb.
Once your phone has remounted the SD card do:
Code:
cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/stock
md5sum * > nandroid.md5
cd ../../../
cat /system/bin/flash_image > flash_image
(If you do not have flash_image post here in this thread and I will pm you a link to it)
Reboot the phone and boot into recovery mode (hold home when powering on)
Once in there
**DO A FULL WIPE**
then restore the "Stock" backup from the restore menu,
It should get past boot and system then fail on /data THIS IS NORMAL
It is not safe to reboot your phone
Set up your phone and all that good stuff, then re-enable adb debugging.
in a command prompt cd to your androidsdk/tools folder and run
Code:
adb install UniversialAndroot.apk
and reroot your phone (bare with me)
once that is done do
Code:
adb shell
su
be sure to click allow on the Superuser Permission pop up that shows up on the phone
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd /system/app
rm Superuser.apk
cd ..
cat /sdcard/flash_image > flash_image
chmod 0700 flash_image
./flash_image recovery /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/Stock/recovery.img
rm flash_image
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
exit
unroot your phone via universal androot and uninstall it via the applications menu
reboot and done!
I have done this a couple times and every time it worked like a charm.
Hey there, I get to inputting the md5 command, but I get cannot create nandroid.md5: permission denied
What am I doing wrong?
Using a SAPPIMG.zip is not at all unsafe and is faster and easier.
Well, I have been trying to use the sappimg.zip from unlockr's guide and on the t-mobile dev forums, but yet all of them end up giving me a Main version is older! error.
I cant seem to find the solution.
I've had the same problem. I have made the gold card a million times (worked rooting the phone) and now it tells me the older error. Thought it would be easier reverting back, guess that's not true.
Anyways, can I get the flash_image file?
getting past the "older version" error
what i did to get past the "older version" error, was this:
step1: re-use gold card and the 1.5 version sappimg.zip from unlockr.com
step2: reboot using the original sappimg for t-mobile (i wont link from the post but i found it on XDA aka use search)
this will reload EVERYTHING as stock MT3g1.2 including original splash, and recovery images.
if you want to revert it to stock, try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=641174, it may help
The safer way is to NOT BOTHER.
The update schedule is to run from today through the 25th inclusive. That's 11 days. The average length of time that any particular user will have to wait is therefore 5.5 days. Chances are that the update will be posted by tonight or tomorrow (latest), and 10 minutes later, it will be fixed so that it doesn't rob you of root (keep your options open!).
So... you save about 5 days of waiting (average) and end up with your options wide open. OR, you can commit to the average and end up locked out, possibly forever.
I like the way you think...

At least thats the plan. If you want to do this look for kennys posts in the sappimg thread his directions are what i used.
That is the correct way to do it. Eng spl then tmo stock image. When done its back to completely stock.

[HowTo] Infuse ADB Flashing Guide - Kernels, Roms, Modified 3e Recovery, Busybox

ABOUT:
This tutorial explains how to use adb to flash the following items starting from a UCLB3 base w/ root.
- Custom kernel w/ CWM recovery
- Modified 3e recovery
- Custom firmware (ROMS)
- Busybox
These instructions will most likely work coming from other rooted Infuse firmwares, but were tested starting from my Odin UCLB3 Unbrick package with root.
ADB SETUP:
Download: adb.zip
Download: SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe
Setup instructions are for Windows, but adb is also available for Linux and Mac.
a.) If necessary, uninstall any previous Kies or Samsung USB Driver installations, and install the Samsung USB driver from the above download link.
b.) Unzip contents of adb.zip and copy the folder contents to C:\Windows\
c.) If your phone is booted up and running, make sure you select USB debug mode in settings. ADB also works in CWM recovery, and in modified 3e recovery.
d.) To test your installation, open a command prompt (Press WINDOWS KEY + R - type cmd - press Enter).
Type:
Code:
adb devices
If all is working, you will see your device listed.
Some quick command tips:
To move a file from your computer to the phone, "push" it:
Code:
adb push myfile.zip /directory-on-phone/
Of course, you need to be in the computer directory for your file in the command line to push it to the phone.
To get a file from your phone onto your computer, "pull" it:
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/myfile.zip
To access a command prompt for the phone:
Code:
adb shell
Inside that shell, you can use unix commands from within the Android OS to manipulate your phone.
------------------------------------------------------------
INSTRUCTIONS FOR GINGERBREAD:
(Scroll down for ICS Instructions.)
------------------------------------------------------------
Instruction steps must be followed in order.
Step 1: Use adb to install a custom kernel
Download: flash_image.zip (Extract and use flash_image for instructions below.)
You'll also need a Gingerbread kernel zImage.
Code:
adb push flash_image /data/local/tmp/flash_image
adb push zImage /data/local/tmp/zImage
adb shell
$ su
# chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/flash_image
# chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/zImage
# /data/local/tmp/flash_image boot /data/local/tmp/zImage
# reboot recovery
Step 2: Use adb to install modified 3e recovery
Necessary for Step 3.
Download: 3e_recovery_no_sig_check.zip (Extract and use recovery for instructions below.)
Code:
adb remount
adb push recovery /system/bin/recovery
adb shell "chmod 755 /system/bin/recovery"
adb reboot recovery
Step 3: Use adb to install a custom firmware
This step uses the modified 3e recovery to flash unsigned firmware.
You'll need to download the zip file for the Gingerbread (or possibly Froyo) rom that you would like to flash. These instructions have been tested by flashing my Ethereal rom.
Replace YourFirmware.zip with the actual name of your rom zip.
Code:
adb push YourFirmware.zip /sdcard/
adb remount
adb shell
# echo "boot-recovery" > /cache/recovery/command
# echo "--update_package=SDCARD:YourFirmware.zip" >> /cache/recovery/command
# reboot recovery
Let firmware flash complete, and then type:
Code:
adb reboot
EXTRA: Use adb to install busybox
Download: Busybox-1.20.2.zip (Extract and use busybox for instructions below.)
Code:
adb remount
adb push busybox /system/xbin/busybox
adb shell
# chmod 755 /system/xbin/busybox
# ln -s /system/xbin/busybox /system/bin/busybox
# /system/xbin/busybox --install -s /system/xbin
# exit
----------------------------------------
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ICS:
----------------------------------------
STEP: Use adb to flash an ICS kernel; then use blue CWM recovery to install an ICS rom.
Download: flash_image.zip (Extract and use flash_image for instructions below.)
You'll also need an ICS kernel boot.img and it is recommended that you push an ICS rom zip to your sdcard. Once you are in blue CWM recovery, you won't be able to use adb to push anything else to the device.
Replace YourFirmware.zip with the actual name of your rom zip.
Code:
adb push YourFirmware.zip /sdcard/
adb push flash_image /data/local/tmp/flash_image
adb push boot.img /data/local/tmp/boot
adb shell
$ su
# chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/flash_image
# chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/boot
# /data/local/tmp/flash_image boot /data/local/tmp/boot
# reboot recovery
From here, just follow the normal instructions for flashing your ICS rom in blue recovery.
I'll add to these instructions as I find more for ICS, and as support increases for adb in the CWM recovery we're using in ICS roms. At this time, adb support isn't fully working in Infuse ICS CWM recoveries. If you use adb to get an ICS kernel / CWM recovery combination, just use the recovery menu to do anything else. If you need to get other files onto the device while in blue CWM recovery, go to mounts and storage, mount /sdcard/, and mount USB storage.
Hope this is useful to someone else. I mainly wanted to see how much could be done with just adb, and I learned quite a bit about how the phone works in the process.
Wow my friend...nice and thx for what you provide the Infuse Community.
It is people like you, why i stay!
very nice how-to!

Thanks fellas. And, by the way, I know that most general users aren't going to use adb to flash kernels and firmware. It's of course easier to use all of the Heimdall one-click and Odin tools that we have - as well as the Infuse Toolkit, Heimdall suite, SGS Kernel Flasher, and CWM recovery. So, for the person asking, "Why would someone still do this, when we have all of the tools that we have?" - this isn't for you.
I approached this from the standpoint of asking, "What if we didn't have access to all of the easy tools?".
At some point, if someone is having issues with Odin and Heimdall, or if they can't use their hardware buttons, maybe they will find this useful. I like to do things from the command line and not have to touch the phone while I'm working on development stuff - plus I type fast, and since I spent years in the command line on Slackware linux, prefer using unix commands. I'm actually faster at CLI stuff than with GUI stuff, plus I like the control that CLI gives you.
I had to help a forum member restore his phone over a remote tech support session using https://join.me/ . He claimed that he couldn't get Heimdall or Odin to recognize his phone. I was able to use adb to do things from his computer, which was helpful, since I couldn't see or directly use his phone. I had to ask him to do some things on the phone, so I later wanted to figure out how to do more using just adb. That's what this is all about. If I had to help someone over a remote session now, I could do most everything without them ever touching their phone.
First of all thank you very much for the guide, but I seem to be having a problem
Whenever I try this:
Code:
adb push YourFirmware.zip /sdcard/
adb remount
adb shell
# echo "boot-recovery" > /cache/recovery/command
# echo "--update_package=SDCARD:YourFirmware.zip" >> /cache/recovery/command
# reboot recovery
the first issue is the phone reboots but continues to system and not to recovery.
now if I manually make it boot recovery, CWM gives me an error that it couldn't mount: SDCARD:update.zip
the update.zip that I'm trying to flash is CM9 RC2, also tried other zip files and also failed.
what am I doing wrong ?!
Thanks in advance.

If you follow the steps correctly from Gingerbread (including the step to install modified 3e recovery), and replace "YourFirmware.zip" with the name of your firmware, these adb commands use 3e recovery to flash firmware. These flashing instructions are not for CWM recovery, and the steps you are following aren't for flashing ICS from Gingerbread. Look further down in the first post for ICS adb instructions.

Thanks for clearing it up. The reason why I used that method is because I looked online and I found it on another forum and the post owner didn't mention anything about it should be used with GB.
infuse CM9 rainbows
I'm caught with a half-done CM9 install of the infuse upgraded from cm7.
Somehow I was able too boot once sucessfully into CM9 though with the initial rainbow screen, but now my device hangs in recovery which is also garbled. I've been searching all over for a nice thorough guide to getting this thing going again and your post here was the only one I found remotely applicable to my situation.
I've been trying your ADB instructions for flashing with ICS but I'm stuck at second step: where I only get: cannot stat "flash-image": no such file or directory.
Since I'm stuck in CWM recovery none of the other options seems to see my device, ie. Heimdall or Odin.
Is there a better solution out of my woes?
Excuse my noobiness.
By stucked at recovery you mean it always boots up into recovery (recovery bootloop)?
You should go back to ULCB3 stock, preferably using Jscott's "option C" and flash the GB bootloaders. Then proceed to installing CM9, and remember to do a double flash. (wipes, flash, reboot, phone hangs, boot into cwm with 3-finger combo, wipe and flash!)
This way you'll solve both the recovery bootloop and the rainbows, and bring you CM9

Yes the problem right now is that the only understandable thing I get out of the phone is the samsung logo at boot.
I think it goes into recovery but I can't really tell because the screen is garbled. Also using "adb reboot download" seems to make no difference to Odin or Heimdall which both refuse to see the phone.
I would love to find out exactly which state the phone is in but my knowledge of adb isn't that great to say the least.
How do I flash bootloaders using adb only?
I totally appreciate your help Andros, totally out of luck with this so far.
The only way to flash bootloaders is in download mode using either odin or heimdall.
Adb reboot download should get you into download mode as long as you have adb access while on recovery. If not, get into download mode this way:
Take out battery, and put it back in.
Hold both vol+ & vol- (don't press power)
plug in usb cable to phone.
Once in download mode, your phone should be recognized by Odin. If not, try reinstalling the drivers using the ones in the iset thread.
There are many threads about this situation that should also help you out, just search around

Okay, somehow I missed how to use the keys to enter download state.
In my mind using adb to enter download state should be the same as the keys but somehow that isn't the case.
Got the GB bootloaders installed and used an odin package and then redid the CM9 installation.
Sorry about spamming this thread, and thanks to andros for getting me going again.
Interesting, I also didn't know that could make a difference. Lesson learned lol
Glad you got it running again

Use odin or heimdall to repartition back to uclb3 stock.
