I was playing yesterday with some normal wallpapers instead of my normal live ones and noticed that when I do not use a Live Wallpaper and I go to my huge list of applications, the scrolling if amazingly smooth but when I have a Live wallpaper it is a bit choppy for my taste.
Anyone else noticed this?
My Quadrant and Neocore scores do not change though.
My biggest complain with Live Wallpapper is the excessive battery usage. It seems the live wallpaper will be active whenever screen is on, even if the an application is running and the wall paper is invisibile.
I thought that too but the fact that I still get the same scores with benchmarks seems to indicate it does not affect apps but only the main interface or something.
Did you notice different scrolling smoothness?

This is NOT true. The live wallpaper is not active while an app is in the foreground. A way to see this is to run System or a task manager and look at the CPU of the live wallpaper when you're in the task manager...0%

I beg to differ. I've run a 1-hour GPS navigation on the phone. Afterwards, I checked the battery usage chart, the live wall paper is second highest on the list of battery hogs, right behind the screen display. I never linger on home screen for more that a few seconds. So, it is either the Live wall paper use battery extremly fast in that a few seconds, or it is active and suck battery juice while sitting in the background.
Ok and can either of you confirm my smooth scrolling question? lol

Which live wallpaper are you using? If it's a 3rd party from market maybe it's not working properly. If you use any of the ones that come with the phone out of the box, you won't have this issue.
I don't use any 3rd party ones. The m moving water is the one I used.

That is all nice but can someone do a very quick test to confirm the main question...if your apps scroll choppier ? That is using Launcher Pro +

Strange, my LP (stock or 3rd party) has never been more than 2-3% battery usage.

I switched from live wallpapers recently, icons don't seem to be extremely choppy, the screen catches a bit of lag when I swiped it back and forth though. When I changed to a still background I didn't catch any lag. It effects it a little but not enough to not use the live wallpapers because of it. I don't use live wallpapers because of battery usage

I have noticed a SIGNIFICANT change in performance after choosing a static wallpaper! Swiping different home screens and opening up the app drawer is buttery smooth with launcher pro. I concur with your assertion shaolin

Thanks mate...yeah is annoying because i know the phone is not really struggling to do the wallpaper as no matter how simple or complicated the live wallpaper is, the not so smooth scrolling issue remains the same at least to my eyes.
I just went with a static one for now since I like the super smooth response time

Like I mentioned, you have to leave screen on for a long time, like doing a navigation. 2~3% is still big percentage of battery usage for the little time it is on (when you doing nothing but leave it on home screen).
i have mario live wall paper running all the time, or if not the VR tunnel one, and the phone runs very smoothly, no lag
stock JH2, no fix of any kind

Please note that this is not a matter of not been smooth is a matter of not being as smooth when scrolling with Launcher Pro at least.
I did not notice it was not as smooth until I tried a non live wallpaper myself.
It is kind of what happens with that Asphalt game...most people feel it is very smooth with the latest 3.1.8 version until they try 3.1.3 which was the last one that did hardware accelaration then they notice how much smoother it can really be.
I did notice the difference and it was very annoying.
Live wallpaper would actually freeze on some 3rd party wallpapers until I did the 1 click fix and ever since then I have zero issues.
It's like a different phone.
Static wallpapers give me much, much smoother desktop performance when swiping around the screens. The other big reason that I got rid of live wallpapers is because I use Weather & Toggle Widget, and with the live wallpaper running the weather animations are super choppy and laggy. The cloud animations especially are not all that smooth to begin with, so the live wallpaper just seems to make it worse.
Hi all,
I don't know if anybody has tried this home launcher. I just installed it and it's really nice. The launcher was made by SE Japan. It seems that it's only available in Japan for some reason through the market.
Check the link below for more details and screenshots. I find it a lot more stable and less resource intensive than any other home launcher that I have tried and it's a lot faster and smoother.
It's by no means perfect, there's a definite lack of options and some widgets get chopped off (beautiful weather for example and the widgets that are supposed to be 4x1, but for some reason take 4x2, you know, the ones that you can't stick anything below them, well, now you can, but they get chopped a little), the lockscreen is sweet, you get 5 desktops and a live wallpaper. It would be nice to be able to change the color palette of the live wallpaper since the colors are a little effeminate imo,but that's ok. Oh yeah, and you will loose the ability to change your wallpaper when using the launcher.
There's one really sweet feature. You can unistall apps straight from the drawer. No need to go in the market or the application settings for non-market apps. Yay!
Like I mentionned, it's not perfect, but it will help me wait for the 2.1 update. Check it out for yourselves.

I have just tested this on my Samsung Galaxy Sii and it looks really good!
One feature I would love to see that is in many other launchers is the ability to "resize" widges on the pages.
This would make it very complete.

you can resize widgets on launcher pro...it just a paid feature, not free on this launcher
@ Jager
I know what he means! With other launchers like the paid LauncherPro
you can overlap widgets, fit them, arrange the grid etc, with QQLauncher
that aint possible or very limited. Besides QQLauncher is laggy as hell on
a very fast phone .
yea, but once we give it time, it willd definitely be a great launcher contender. good find. i'll keep my eye on this one.
I sure love it, especially with Vipitus his modifications, but I'm back

This launcher is awesome on my D3, super quick to redraw the home page after closing an app or camera and love the alphabetically sorted app drawer. Give this guys some time and it will be a hit. It does need a few featured like widget resizing and editing of icons, also a custom grid size. Will keep for a while to see how it develops
when I click the contact or phone app on the dock it opens the default samsung phone or contact instead of giving the option of the all the phone apps (go dialer, touchpal dialer etc). any plans to add this?
Does anyone know how to replace the dock and app drawer icon? I don't want an entire theme to change it :S
wow this has the best lockscreen I've ever seen
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
I've been using Launcher Pro for quite a long time now on my Epic 4G but I've never liked that it seems slow to initialize and at times is just laggy for unknown reasons. So, I switched to QQLauncher Pro 1.4.3 (Build 234). I miss some of the LP icons but overall love how QQLauncher Pro's design is for the setup of each screen, the ability to organize apps into folders, and at least in my case with Android 2.3.4 EH06 installed on my phone, there doesn't seem to be any lagginess to concern me.
However, I have found some quirky bug in that not all icons are rebuilt after a reboot of my phone. Similarly, with all my apps organized into multiple folders, the same 7 apps are found outside their intended folders after a reboot. The only solution is to apply a restore of the launcher settings, although it only corrects the home screens and not the app drawer. For each instance of this corruption, it is always the same apps affected, which is also puzzling since there's nothing they share in common to my knowledge. Most, and perhaps all of them are saved to the memory card to conserve system memory, but there are other apps similarly saved to the memory card that aren't affected, so that does not seem to be the source of the bug.
At this point, I'm not sure if I'll return to Launcher Pro...I have to decide which I think to be the lesser of two evils. QQLauncher really wins a lot of points though for just allowing multiple item selection when building a screen up.
Best launcher so far ...all it needs is an option to switch home screen landscape and more themes
I'd like to push/hold an app from the list-drawer and put it on the desktop, doesn't seem to work atm.
And the lock screen seems to redirect me to the GO SMS Pro app both when using the SMS-unlock and Home-unlock. Anyway to fix this? I'd really like to use the lock screen!
I'm using the latest 2.3 version. Is there any way to disable the task manager/app cleaner(which seems to run automatically)?

Has anyone tried this launcher in the market. looks similar to adw just installed it havent played around with it yet. everything looks ok.
I don't know about that launcher specifically but QQ Chat is a (popular) chinese chat app. We could hack it in to our old motorola flip phones back in the day.
Perhaps this is the same chinese company with another knockoff. I'd say it if looks and feels like ADW, why not just use ADW? Go Launcher seems nice too.
[UPDATE]
Looks neat. While supposedly it isn't as customizable as the popular ones, it does offer some neat features. The Contact list Apps Menu looks appealing and some of the other features. Try it out and give us a review!

I just gave it a try and it is amazing! I love it so far. It is heavy 3d app so I am not sure if it will run smooth on older phones but it runs great on the G2X.
Thanks.
Initial review
Been playing with this for a most of the day now. Here is what I like about it.
Interesting screen transitions, I like the different swipe animations, Fade in is a nice touch, and I really like Cascade. Card is a fun variation of windmill, but with alot of icons, gets sore on the eyes. And Cube is a nice one as well, although it does get a bit laggy. Other than Cubem, they all work pretty good, even with a heavy live wallpaper working in the background.
The app drawer list setting is a huge plus on this. Something that is lacking in GoLauncher (my usual primary) and Launcher pro. It really makes finding your apps easy, and when you have alot, like I do, its great.
Clone Launcher - This is a nice feature, as it pulls whatever you have placed as screens on Launcher Pro into this launcher. It didn't give me the choice to pull GoLauncher, so it might only work with Launcher pro, not sure.
Its a pretty stable, fast and non-laggy UI. I like using it, however, the following items really are why I keep going back to GoLauncher.
Themes - pretty limited in what you can do. You can change wallpapers BUT only what is offered by the theme. You cannot choose from previous wallpapers, and you cant choose any live wallpapers. You have to get into a different launcher and set those up, then return to QQ. Same with Icons, you cant use anything but what is offered by the theme.
With that said about Icons, they are biggger than most launcher, which is a nice bonus.
Dock - your limited to the 5, with the app drawer static. It isn't easy to change them, you have to remove them, and then add, you can't add directly from the current icon. There is no second or third dock drawer, so you can only put your favorite four down there.
Regarding the QQ widgets, you get Task killer and quick switch. Quick switch works fine, but your limited to WiFi, screen brightness, sound settings and GPRS listed in the widget. You can access GPS, flight mode, etc through selecting the widget.
Task killer I am unsure of. When using it with ZDBox, I get different numbers. When I kill idle tasks using QQ, I end with 339M in use. But when I do the same using ZD, I get 233.6M in use. So not sure why the difference.
For my opinion, I like its stability and different screen transitions as well as the app list, and will keep an eye on this. However, by adding more screen customization (wallpapers, icons, live wallpapers) and more dock choices, this could become a really great launcher.
I will check Regina now, see how that works.
A few other things
Alright, forget Regina, couldn't make it work, too buggy.
BUT I do have some more input regarding QQ.
The lock screen rocks! I love the animations it gives while charging, and its a very responsive lock. Best thing is once you activate it and go with a different launcher, it still works!
I do wish we could change the shortcuts. And whenever I choose the down swipe (Home icon), I go to my SMS app, even when it QQ. So there is a bad connection or something along those lines there. Its still something I can live with, and plan to continue using the lock screen!
Lol I don't know why but I like this launcher. How is the lockscreen for everyone. Is it responsive?

the launcher honestly was very nice, but too little features for my liking unfortunately.
not enough features, but im keepin the app installed cuz i love that lockscreen!
One last update
So played some more with it and used it for the weekend. here are my last points on it.
Folders - You are limited to 12 apps only. No more. So if you got alot that needs to go in a folder (like I do), you will end up with more folders, more confusion, and more 'which folder has what app' issues. But whats cool is that you can find the classification name by checking the box icon on the right. Nice touch guys!
Lock screen - Again, I can't say enough about this. but now am going to say a little bit more. of all the free lock options out there, this is the only one I have found where the volume keys work when the screen is locked and off. HOWEVER, when you use that volume, the screen will come on (thats ok), but then never turn back off (NOT OK!)
I found out while riding the bus home. Left the office and turned up the music player while phone was still in the case. Didn't look at it until I got off the bus and put it in my car dock. Noticed it was on. thought I did that taking it out of the case, but then I noticed the battery was drained alot more than its supposed to for the ride home.
so did a check, unplugged and player going, with the screen off I turned volume up, screen came on, then never turned off (I gave up waiting after 5 minutes).
My stock lock screen is set to turn the screen off after 10 seconds, and all the other lock screens work with that time, so this really needs to get corrected.
Still hoping for updates to both the lock and the launcher! Don't give up developers!
I use it with my Galaxy S2 & love it. I have the iphone theme for obvious reasons
(check my sig)

Same here!!!!!
I like the lock screen. It sticks around after switching back to ADW EX. Keeping it installed to wait for updates.
It's a decent launcher, I normally use ADW Launcher EX though. Ya it does need some more customization and its got a good lock screen.
But I recently tried Go Launcher EX again(stopped using awhile back due to random fc's , updated version seemed to fix it) and their lock screen app Go Locker, is great! They've got the ICS lock screen theme, Sense, an iPhone clone, and a cool Santa Claus themed lock screen just to name a few. It's worth a look for sure
If somebody could take this launcher, add customize-able dock bars, allow themes from Roms (like MIUI or CM) to work properly, and add more customization to the lockscreen (like change applications, torch, etc) I would pay for it in a heartbeat.
I love this launcher but it still lacks features other launchers have, like I can't leave go launcher for this one YET
HOTLANTA, even though its cold ;-)
Their is also an Asian company that produces a launcher named cclauncher. Its supposed to be a 3d type launcher.
Cclauncher ics has some really good ics animations including the app drawer ics animations, almost identical.

Does live wallpaper contribute to battery drain more so than regular wallpaper?
I am guessing it might as it probably requires more system resources to run.

Yes.
A normal picture will conserve most battery.
On an AMOLED screen a dark (best black) picture will conserve even more.
It really depends on the live wallpaper. I notice no extra battery drain with MultiPicture LWP, but it only shows images. While it does run in the background and updates every 4 hours or when I double tap the screen, it isn't constantly moving or interactive with sensors.
Something that is constantly moving (especially at a high frame rate) or uses the accelerometer will use more battery life.
If there is battery drain with MultiPicture LWP, it's so minimal that I don't notice a difference.
Supersonic Evo 4G | MIUI | Tapatalk
How long do you sit staring at your Homescreen? Most of the time it's as long as it takes to launch the app that you want to use, isn't it? Which shouldn't be long at all.
on cm7 nexus live wallpaper i notice no additional battery drain at all. Setting screen timeout to under 1min helps alot too
What about those stock live wallpapers from Samsung like the Galaxy live wallpaper or Northern Lights wallpaper, do they consume so much more than normal wallpapers?
Like how much more?
If normal wallpaper with normal use of the phone drains the battery in 24 hours, will one with stock Live wallpapers like the two I mentioned, make it 23 hours?
Or is it so drastic that it will make it 20 hours?
Hours are only for reference.
Thanks.
Just try it out, go airplane mode, screen always on, both types of wallpapers for say 2-3 hours compare battery drain.

This is exactly the point I wanted to inquire about.
Question: how exactly does the process of live wallpaper work on Android in terms of cpu and memory, thus battery drain?- not being a developer, I really don't know the particulars.
In other words, if the home screen isn't actually being displayed (say, the phone is "asleep", or you have an app open, like the browser, the dialer, or Angry birds) does the LWP process still run full bore in the background, calculating it's fractals or whatever? Or is it suspended whenever the home screen isn't displayed?
For that matter, even if it does remain running in the background, which of these is likely to consume more battery: the algorithm/calculation processes, or the actual manipulation of the pixels on the display? (I realize that may depend somewhat on the nature of the wallpaper too).
Because like Dirk said up above, I really don't think anyone spends that much time on their phone with the home screen just sitting there, (you're either using it or you're not) so if it's the latter case -if manipulating pixels eats the most juice- then for the most part, LWP shouldn't have much impact on battery drain. If the former, then static wallpapers are certainly better, but I still don't see a need for a plain black background. Unless you have an insane screen timeout set, like 10 minutes.
Anyone? Thanks!
Its actually very subjective due to phone, apps installed and running, as well as the live wall paper you are using during that time..
For myself i do use some of the live wallpapers from the phone itself and for some better programmed ones, it may take up 2 - 3% of battery when running for about 5 hrs. Badly designed ones or those which come with ads do take up lots more, remember one i downloaded took up to 15% battery for the same time frame.
If you are particular for battery life.. i would suggest to use those darker themed wall papers as it does make some difference overall.. at least to me
Yeah, my battery life has been abysmal, I just inherited this phone (SCH-i500) from a family member; but after a little conditioning, it does seem to be improving somewhat.
Anyway, then can I assume you're saying that some live wallpapers hit on the battery even when they're not being displayed?
personally, i don't find using LWP affects my battery in any significant manner... given that i use LWP that display simple looping animations. Some LWP make use of your accelero/gyro sensors and some consume some extra resources due to touch interaction. I personally think these are the LWP to avoid though they appears to be a great eye candy.
Then again, each time i wake my phone, i would only stay approx 1-3 seconds on home screen before running an app or performing another task rendering my LWP useless.
In my understanding, just because an app(including LWP) is in your memory(ram) or in the "running" list in app manager, does not mean its using up your battery. Its the process that requires CPU that consumes power. And once you're away from homescreen, they LWP rendering stops almost(if not) immediately thus does not consume your battery that much. I also believe that bright coloured or high contrast(white focus) LWP(or even regular wallpaper) will use up more battery given that most of our battery issues comes from big displays.

Thanks hevlaska, this is the information I was looking for. Seems to me then that a relatively non-interactive LWP shouldn't be a drain on the battery.

This really depends of the developer. The most important method of a wallpaper is
Code:
onVisibilityChanged()
That method is called whenever the wallpaper is hidden behind other application or comes back visible. When going unvisible all the processes of WP should be terminated but this is allway not the case if the WP is designed badly.
So, even if you hide your wallpaper it may still have some cpu heavy process running if the developer has decided to do so.
a static image its a better solution for more battery

Okay, so this was the information I was really looking for.. Thank you!
Now if it were just easy to look at the source code of the files inside a LPW apk to see how that's been set.. I've seen threads here on that but apparently dex files are a PITA, and besides that there's the whole reverse-engineering stigma.. not that I'd want to do that even if I could.. which I can't. (I have no head for programming, I've tried)
That said, I've found this thread:

I guess if I get really, really curious.. for what it's worth, I could try it. I'm a fan of Magic Smoke and Plasma, I'd use those if the onVisibilityChanged() is set in them.
hi,
i use a static pic as background and an non stock battery to.
it works perfect. So now it's your turn to take the things you want. More Battery vs. LWP.
