Digital Copies?? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have several digital copies on my Mac, anyway to put them on my Xoom?

Digital copies? What format? PDF? DOC? TIF? You need to be a lot more specific.

If they are digital copies you downloaded via itunes, not very easily. You can use a program called Requiem with certain versions of itunes to strip the drm off, then you can easily play them on any device.

Thanks, I will try that.

If they are from blue ray disc, grab pocket blu...it allows you to stream a digital copy to save on android devices.

It most likely won't work. Digital copies typically work in one of the two common DRMs:
1. Windows Media DRM which only works with Windows PC and some Windows media players.
2. iTunes for apple devices.
There are also some Sony titles works with PS3 and PSP but they are rare.

Allshare (dlna server) ??

how can we make this work?

*bumping & grinding
i know im not the only one who wants this app
Does it install and if so does it crash?
If so, post the logcat.
doesnt install
but do i need to put that odex file somewhere first?
From what I have read you need to push the Dlna.apk and Dlna.odex to /system/app/. I did that and it doesn't list in applications. I am a newb.
make a shortcut to it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7486420&postcount=9
Apparently we need to deodex the Dlna.odex and re-odex it with the proper files specific to the evo?
I am not sure, breaking new ground here myself and not a lot is returned in search results.
I am getting BOOTCLASSPATH errors when I try and deodex with smali. Have to keep digging.
nice work mchlwvr614!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you know there are better dlna apps in the market.

Not the best, but i use andromote for my player and twonky for my server app.
TwonkyServer is already in the market, free, and serves up pics, vids, and audio over DLNA pretty easily. Works with PS3 and 360 and I'm sure other DLNA devices. Why not just use that?
Twonky server doesnt work on my evo and many others. Its documented.

Media server, good as dlna. Works with ps3 and my samsung 52" lcd.
Andromote is good for receiving from media servers.
Web Share is good for internet based sharing, like orb

None of the alternatives mentioned allow playback of video files on our handsets from a dlna/upnp client.
I'd like to stream my movies/shows from my PC to my evo instead of needing to use my TV and PS3 or other media player.

Seconded for VLC Stream and Convert. So, far it is the closest thing to AirVideo if you're familiar with iOS.
You can find setup instructions on the developer's site, http://traveldevel.com/
And adding some VLC command lines to a startup shortcut, you can have it automatically start and minimize to the system tray on boot up.
Something like this:
"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --extraintf=http
and you can also specify host/port by adding this line
--http-host=192.168.1.3:7070

[Q] DVD digital copies

The kids have a few DVD's that allow you to transfer a digital copy to a mobile device, i have transfered one to my PC as WMV but it does not play on the TF .Should i be selecting the I pod option or should i re code the WMV and if so with what format
thanks for any help
Neither will work as most downloaded digital copies are drm protected. Only way to play them is to strip the drm off which is easier said then done
yeah as lordgodgeneral said, no DVD copy will ever work on android because they all have either iTunes, Sony, or WMP DRM in them.
The only way to get your DVDs onto the tablet is to strip the DRM from the digital copies, or rip the DVD to a video file.

any guides on this and what the best format is ?
Handbreak to rip the movie. Dvd43 can remove copyright protection if you have a 32 bit copy of windows. Anydvd will remove copyright protection on 32 and 64 bit, but cost $69.
I've been using acidrip (which is a simple to use wrapper around mencoder (linux)) for dvds. The avi's play cleanly on transformer; though there is a bit of distortion (I'm beginning to think the transformer pixels are not square) but the videos play without any lag et all.
Haven't tried blu-rays yet; not sure if there is a good solution for linux.
What format to RIP DVD's to for playing on Transformer
I just got my Transformer and I would like to rip some of the Kids and my movies for the long car trips. I was looking into getting DVDFAB DVD Ripper. What format should I rip my DVD's into to run on the Transformer using MoboPlayer? My computer is Windows 7 64 Bit and mostly I have are DVD's and would be loading them to the microSD Card.

I've had great success with DVD Catalyst 4, which enables you to rip DVDs (including DRM'ed ones) as well as convert existing video files. There are no specific Transformer profiles (yet), but use the Xoom HQ2 profile and you're good to go. Well worth the $9.95.
Ron
dvd fab is fine for ripping the movie it even has option to convert to mp4 for mobile device (but you have to pay for that option).so whats the best setting to convert rips for the transformer

Not that it helps the OP in the slightest, but this can be done on certain Android implementations. For example, my Galaxy Tab 7" can play DRM'd WMP titles.

Honestly this topic is turning into a pretty good place to find out how to work DVDs on the transformer. Hope it stays around since a lot of people are going to need this.
Personally i've used AnyDVD and CloneDVD mobile in the past, but handbreak is a lot better.
i haven't tried DVD catalyst, but if it has a profile for honeycomb, i may have to check that one out. and for only $10 thats a steal.
Another vote for DVD catalyst. Some really good results. Using the Xoom/Honeycomb profile.
Still working of ripping Toy Story 3 though. I own all on DVD, and it would have been great to take TS3 with me to keep the the little-un quiet. He's now addicted to Ice Age, so {{{raspberry}} to you Disney.
I'll second DVD Fab as well, simple and easy to use. 1Click DVD works well also, it really is one click (minus 1 time setup and fiddling).
What's a good solution for blu-rays ?

Thank you
The Toy Stories are a bit picky. 1 and 2 (platinum edition) do work in the current beta, TS3, track 19 should be the correct one. Have a look in the "Problem DVD" section on my website. When I run into issues with DVDs, I list them there (along with what is needed to make them work)
so using handbrake do you just rip it as MP4 settings and it will work on the TF?

The one I have is the bluray + DVD combo Special Edition.
When the selection box shows, it (for some reason) doesn't show times, but with track 40 selected (should be selected by default) just click OK. Scanning will start then restarts to a different scanning mode because the dvd is picky, and after that, the conversion should work fine.
I attached a screenshot of it running on my system using the standard Xoom profile.
If for some reason your DVD is different, you can use VLC or PowerDVD or something to play the DVD on your PC, get to the point where you are actually in the movie, and then look for the title # or track #. This is the the track to use.

I have the same DVD combo also. I tried it with the Transformer profile on the beta DVD Catalyst and the output file could not be played. I'm guessing the Xoom and Transformer profiles are the same, but I will give it another try.

Correct, the Transformer profiles are copies of the Xoom profiles. Since it uses the same hardware internally (tegra2) and runs the same OS, it has the same capabilities and limitations regarding video playback.
The movie finished. Attached screenshots:
shot of finished in dvdcat, shot of movie playing in quicktime, and shot of xoom playing the video.
both Toy Stories I worked on for Beta 4, so if you are using beta3 or older, they will not work. beta5 is the latest one.

[Q] sync my ipod with TF? iTunes?

I don't have any Apple products or use iTunes myself but I highly doubt that you'll be able to perform a direct sync between your TF and your iPod (if that's what you're hoping to achieve) due to Apple's stance on copyrighted material. For example they deliberately disable file sharing on their iDevices via Bluetooth in a bid to combat piracy (e.g. music). Thus I would imagine there's a similar block of sorts in place with iTunes in terms of not being able to transfer stuff directly from iTunes onto a non-Apple product. Unless someone else can post a workaround of some description you might have to take a long-winded route to transfer the same stuff that's on your iPod/iTunes onto your TF.
If however you're asking about software that performs a similar function to iTunes but which is built for the TF, you could try downloading the Asus software from their website and see what it can do. I've never really used it before so I'm not entirely sure what it offers.
The only other thing I can suggest is to simply plug your TF into your computer, which should be detected as a mass storage device as long as you have the correct drivers installed. You can then simply click-and-drag your music from your chosen folder onto the TF's internal memory.
Hope this helps.
[EDIT]: Oh, 100th post .
the ipod music format will not play on the TF. If it is not copy protected (DRM) you can export to cd then load on tf. Now you see why they are so disliked. You bought the song and tbey still want to tell you what you can listen to it on.
I use iSyncr
It's specifically for getting your iTunes stuff, including smart playlists etc. onto an android device, it's two way as well. Works great and is well supported with regular updates.
Can't recall how much it was, but I've not regretted the purchase.
It's not exactly syncing with your iPod but only one step removed.
Cheers.

Thanks jonitfcfan and Rumbleweed for ur reply. all I want to do is transfer music from TF to my iPod. I do not need the other way around. so I dont think the question of file format comes

None of this is true. The iPod music formats are mp3/AAC, both of which play fine on the TF. Even iTunes music store purchases have been DRM-free for years now. You can drag your music onto the TF (or SD or MicroSD). You can also sync your iTunes library to Google Music or Amazon and access them through those sites (or through their associated apps).

MP3 ? I thought that iTunes converted whatever audio you imported into M4A/AAC format before sending it to your iDevice?

[Q] Alternative Gallery Apps?

I am curious if any of you use your TF for doing presentations for clients at wherever you work.
I have a couple of apple guys in the office and with their Ipads they have downloaded a program called "Portfolio" which I have not found in our Android market.
The basic functionality is that it lets them break up galleries into folders, so they create a folder for each product. Then for the client they can just click on the folder for the product they want to see and can show them photos/pdfs/etc.
Is there any way we can do that with either the standard gallery or another gallery?
U don't need special app to makes different folders for your different clients. The stock gallery already supports this.
Go to your SD card via any file manager, create a folder "client". Then create more folders within "client", name each of these folders with your clients name. Then drop the related files in their respective folders.
The stock gallery should pic this up and display your client's name in folders.
Apart from that, u can try Quickpic as an alternative gallery, its more flexible compared to stock gallery.

+1 for QuickPic.
Also recommending QuickPic.
If we could only have Quickpic with the smoothness of JustPictures ^^
Thanks for the tips!
Quick question, if we have some marketing videos that I would also want to use that are either in Quicktime or WMV will they work on the transformer or do I need to convert them to something else? If so, what is the best for conversion (both time, ease, and quality)?

Yes for WMV as long as the resolution isn't too high (1080p isn't smooth with this format, I've tried. 720p or lower is fine for me), but you'll need to convert Quicktime into a more useable format such as MP4. You can use Handbrake to convert it, it's free so nothing to lose in trying it out.
