I am thinking about maybe getting a new sprint android phone with hardware keyboard but no 4g for a teenage girl as a birthday gift. I think there are maybe 2 or 3 that fall into that category. I saw that some people like the lg even though its not a slider. Maybe with a teen, a phone with no major moving parts might withstand some of their usage.
Some of the things I'm looking for are froyo, preferred hardware keyboard but I might change my mind, good battery life, no 4g, no modem or data lockups. She has a samsung moment now and I remember that thing used to piss me off when I would get data lockup.
With your experiences, what might you suggest? I am doing research on my own too but I'm looking for input from you people too.
Maybe a Samsung Intercept... Its an Android perfect for a teen. Its just received a update to froyo like maybe a month ago. Its about 50 dollars at best buy. And its good for playing apps like angry birds

Samsung Transform is also a good choice. It's kind of like the crappier version of the Evo Shift

Isn't it still $150 on contract? Way too much for what is essentially a slower, less functional Samsung Epic.
It's like $70 at best buy...

i wouldn't give the intercept the time of day, i know a few people who have had one and the experience was terrible. they ended up ditching it for something else.
transform is suppose to be decent, the Shift really is a great phone but you must be willing to deal with the extra ten bucks a month :-/
I would definately look at the Optimus S.
You also might think about picking up a used Hero for them. I'm sure there are quite a few out there at the moment.
I handed mine down to my 13 year old step daughter and you would think I gave her an Atrix. She loves playing Flood It and Word Feud along with Angry Birds.
Sent from my HTC Evo Shift 4G
I would also suggest the transform. I had that phone for almost 30 days before deciding to pay the 10 bucks dream phone tax... it was decent, but I did get it while sprint had it for $50 before christmas. Really enjoyed the keyboard. Still making a lot of mistakes on this one...
Transcoded from my PG06100 using XDA App
Do not get the transform. I bought it launch day and it performed decently for about a month and a half. Then I started getting all of the bugs that everyone else was getting(keyboard strokes randomly opening programs, intense lag, data lockups, etc.) There are temporary workarounds and I would have to reset the phone every other day. Its not the shift's younger brother. Its a completely different machine. Its more like the Samsung Moments slightly more attractive twin brother; the internals are identical.
The optimus s on the other hand is amazing. I bought it for my girlfriend and it blew me away. The processor had a lower clock speed yet it felt exponentially faster than my transform(due to the adreno GPU). I had low expectations for that phone and it blew me away.

do not get the samsung intercept.i repeat do not get the samsung intercept..this phone is total crap..it doesnt feel like froyo it feels like cupcake.even a teenager would get fed up with this phone..its none of my business but i dont think a teen needs a cellphone..no disrespect
I own an Evo, and my contract is up at the end of this month. I really want to go to WP7, but I don't (preferably) want a phone with a keyboard. I love the all touch big screens, but I wouldn't mind having a keyboard with a smaller screen.
I just want an honest opinion. Is it really worth sacrificing my Evo for a smaller screen with a keyboard, especially when I can (hopefully) get a mango device around 2012? (If Sprint even has one by then).
I have heard of the Nokia phones and the Mazaa that is supposedly coming, but you never know with Sprint's luck.
it is totally worth upgrading to the arrive right now especially since the mango beta can be found in these forums,it significantly increases the functionality and speed of this phone on the existing stock rom.

Yeah, but do you think there will be a phone similiar to the Evo (bigger screen, no keyboard)? I would hate to get it and then a few months later one comes out! Lol. I haven't gone to sprint to check out the arrive, yet. But when my upgrade is, I will keep it in mind.
Thanks for the input.

There very well could be. Hard to say whether Sprint thinks it's going to gain enough traction, especially with the iPhone supposedly coming. But I say play with the Arrive in store. The priority for me was the hardware keyboard and also the fact that I came from a feature phone.
Shrinking down in screen size probably won't feel the same for sure because you're losing so much viewable space. However, if you think the OS as a whole in how it functions is worth it to you then it might end up being a negligible complaint.
If you're really worried some new hardware might come out then just wait.

Yeah, but I don't want to wait and then be further away in a 2-year upgrade, and I think a 3.6in is still a good size.
My buddy has the Evo Shift and it seems to be a perfect size from messing with it. I had the HTC hero and that was a 3.2in all touch display lol.
I might go into Sprint. If don't like it, I have no choice but to wait. But I can't stand Android for another minute. But that is another subject lol.

Holy s*** you're right. Going into the sprint store to pick up HTC Arrive next month.
I went from the Evo to Epic to Arrive and lemme say this...
I DO miss the Evo's screen size and just the overall build of the phone. Whenever I'm browsing on the Arrive I'm always like "I wish I had a little bit more" and when I'm in the messaging app I wish I had a little bit more space.
But that's just looking at the phone. Now, interacting with the screen is so smooth its sickening. I'm talking about the screen itself, like the material. I have an iPod Touch 4G and its just...bleh. I hate using it because it picks up fingerprints way too easy so your like "i'll just dry my hands and it'll be all good" but when you do that, the screen is extra rough and its hassle. The Arrive's screen is just smooth as eggs and I dont think it picks up fingerprints..I've never noticed them and I dont use a screen protector.
Now, the material + the OS responsiveness is amazing. Once you pick the Arrive, you'll be amazed. WP7 is just too smooth. The browser will destroy your mind. Also, the keyboard is friggin' nuts. I'm on the mango beta and the thing I love is how I don't even need to touch the delete key. Let's say your typing real fast...all you have to do is tap and touch the word to correct it. Well, Swype had that on Android so it may not be a big deal to you, but the big difference now is how the WP7 takes in account you hitting the letters right above the space bar, instead of the space bar. So, "thisbis" automatically autocorrects to "this is" Add in dynamic key resizing and there's really no need for a bigger screen for a bigger keyboard.
so yeah..enough my rambling....you'll love the Arrive.

I agree with you 100%. I haven't haven't picked up the phone yet, but I've heard good things. Such as the great keyboard, and I've never heard of the autocorrect on WP7, that is amazing. I constantly have to change my sentences because the words blend together.
The OS is by far my favorite, not as much customization, but I find myself constantly changing it on Android with different ROMs. And i have tried to setcup my Android so i can have a quick glance at the screen, juat to conserve my battery. The phones are a pain in the ass. I would rather pay for quality, IMO. Being able to have a phone that lasts for 3 days is definitely a plus, not to mention improvements with mango.
I too have gone from the Epic, to the Evo, now WP7. Ive watched so many videos on YouTube, and read great reviews on the phone, I might just pick it up next month.
Thanks for your comment.

You can get a brand new arrive from eBay for around $200. I'd go that route and save your upgrade credit for the next Gen wp7 devices this fall.

So you think there will be Nokia/other devices that will be of more quality, with Mango on them in the Fall? I mine as well wait instead of going through the hassel of getting a new device that isn't up to ALL of my expectations lol.
I still don't mind the Evo, but I am in love with WP7. I just want better hardware.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that new hardware will be released with mango. However, WHEN it'll get released on sprint is a question. As of now arrive's hardware is 1.5 years old already (first Gen snapdragon) so if you can wait I think you should.

Yeah man because I am not about to get a 2-year contract out on a phone that I might not like, well as much as an all touch display. But if I don't have any options by or shortly after Christmas I'm grabbing the arrive for sure.
Offnote, does the creaky tilt for the keyboard bother you? Does it lean to far to your face to where you need to tilt the phone to see it? I'm iffy about the design lol.

Honestly dude, just go to a sprint store on the weekend and play with it for a good 30 minutes. Granted the display model won't have mango, but for the basics it'll give you an idea of what to expect. I mean we can hype you up all day long, but it'll still come down to how you subjectively feel about it when its in your hands and visualize how it'll fit your needs.

+1, I picked up a Arrive for $220 without any contract. That's the best route IMO.
Yeah, Fall is right around the corner though. I mine as well save my POS until I see something that I truly want, not because it is my only option.
Sprint and Verizon got screwed (CDMA is always last), but this new round of WP7 devices should offer more to these carriers, if they were smart. There are 9-? handsets for ATT and T-Mobile (GSM), The only people left are CDMA.
I hope I'm not wrong. :X
So I started with the android system on the tilt and tried many different phones and bashed apple, then I tried a iphone 3g and it was so easy to use and everything worked right, then 3ga, then iphone 4, gps, internet, calls aok worked so well, I don't like there whole world domination attitude so I have come back to android, and not much has change, right out of the box my infuse was garbage, worse signal then the iphone 4 which I didn't think was possible, horrible bat, multiple droped calls, gps won't lock to save my life, and phone will freeze from time to time, this is stock! I just don't see how its acceptable for a company to release a phone that barley works as phone, I downloaded infused 2.0.2 and it works SO much better but still bad bat, horrible gps, but in a matter of days deva can make a phone 100% better then the company?i don't get it, maybe they should stop making so many phones and make one that works right, I'm not a fan boy and won't be going back to apple because I hate them as a company, but when I spend money on a phone I would like it to work somewhat, if xda was not here I would not keep this phone..... Anyone else agree or disagree? Any ideas on how to get my phone to work like a phone should without having to update every 3 days, reset, is it ok that samsung is happy pumping phones out that look awesome and suck as mobile devices? I'm not flamming,i just want these phones to work better then apple so they can't sell phones, tv, computers ect....ok enough out of me.

my phone signal is ok, wifi signal sux, and yeah android is slow, it runs a lot of java which sux. apple does things different. I would like to see some bootloader and kernel development to run meego instead. I wish there was more app development for meego.
the gps can be improved with a couple settings but should be set that way stock. to be honest my captivate had better gps reception, even with its notorious gps issues, it could track well if you figured out what works. this gps is much more accurate and tracks better but it still has the Samsung quirks and poor reception under cover.
other than the gps my phone ran good stock, I just have a flashing addiction. but I will say it should be better.
Ha! I thought I was alone in actually wanting a modern meego phone...
I beg to differ with you, respectfully. Before I switched to android, I used an iphone 3g, so I have experience with both os's. Honestly, from my experience, the only advantage my sisters iphone 4 has over my Infuse is battery life. And even then, I still get a full day from my infuse, and I'm a heavy texter and data user, so that advantage is negligible...not to mention I can carry extra batteries if I don't have access to a charger for extended periods of time.
I experience no lag whatsoever, so ios doesn't seem any smoother to me. Also, I have my phone customized for maximum functionality for myself. That being said, no, my phone isn't as ready and easy for just anybody to pick up and use compared to an iphone, but the fact that I have it customized how I want it means that it's actually much more streamlined for me than I could make an iphone. To me, if I want the ios experience, I can open up my app drawer. When I had an iphone 3g, I hated only having a grid of apps as the whole gui. Yes, ios may be "smoother" (i disagree because I see no lag) and more intuitive to everybody, but my phone schools ios when it comes to ease of use for just me...and it's my phone, so why do I care if anybody else needs to use it?
Another huge advantage android had for me is widgets. They provide instant information that I would have top launch an app to see if I were using ios. Also, the notification bar is so great, and much better than those damn pop up notifications on ios.
As for service, everywhere I go has at least hspa, and a strong signal at that, so my infuse beats the iphone in that category. When I'm in an hspa+ area, my infuse blows my sisters iphone 4 out of the water in network speeds. In regards to gps, it's unfortunate that yours sucks, but my gps works great, locking within 5-10 seconds within at most 20m. I don't bother to use wifi much, but when I do I have no problems with signal strength.
Also, I love my 4.5 inch screen, and samoled+ technology. After my iphone 3g, I had a captivate, which was a godsend. At 4 inches, I loved the extra space, and the colors/detail of the screen crushed my 3g. Yes, the iphone 4 has amazing resolution, but with that small of a screen I feel it's more of a marketing gimmick. I'll be impressed when phones start having 4.3-4.5" 720p displays, and eventually 1080p in a few years. My infuse is plenty sharp enough, and the extra inch of real estate makes reading much easier on this than my sisters iphone 4. I don't care if I can see a tiny bit of pixelation in my letters, I would rather have them this way and much larger than tiny and super sharp. Also, the samoled+ makes colors unbelievably awesome, and the blacks are unmatched by any lcd hands down.
In regards to build quality, I couldn't be happier with my infuse. Even though it's all plastic besides the screen, the fit and finish of this phone is great. I feel the build quality is great, as my phone is rock solid, no creaking noises whatsoever. Yeah, the glass back of the iphone 4 looks great, but in my eyes isn't practical, as I would cover it up anyways with a case, and I would have two glass surfaces to worry about shattering instead of only one. Granted, metal would be nice, but with a plastic case, the infuse is nice and light for how huge it is, while still retaining the rock solid build quality I want in a phone.
Lastly, I love the openness of android. This dev community provides continual upgrades to my phone, when I was plenty happy with it on stock software. Also, the wide variety of certain apps makes android superior in my eyes. For example, I love having a wide variety of keyboards to use. Also, the numerous launchers available make it so I can have a ton of options when it comes to gui. Yes, ios may have an edge in gaming, but that's what my xbox is for, and I still have the essentials with android, such as angry birds, doodle jump, paper toss, plants vs zombies, etc...not to mention this huge screen makes gaming much easier. Custom themeing is also huge for me. My phone is one of a kind in the looks department...on ios you can pick a background...whoop-dee-doo, you're still stock with stock icons and the icons must fill from top left to bottom right, making every iphone look exactly the same. Also, I can download any file I want, hell, I can even torrent things right on my phone. I also don't have to put up with itunes and its ****ty syncing. I love being able to drag and drop files to and from my phone...much easier and faster. Plus, if I wanted to make playlists and sync stuff, I could use something like doubletwist or spotify. Yeah, syncing is simple for grandpa to understand, but its slow and useless compared to dragging and dropping.
This is just my opinion, I respect that you're entitled to your own, so please respect mine.

Glad we can have a civilized discussion in at least a few parts of the infuse forum, haha. If I had an iphone4, I probably would have jailbroken it and done all that good stuff, seeing as it actually has good specs to work with. I guess I just wasn't into it much when I had my 3g, and I felt that it was too much hassle for not that great of a phone specs-wise. To be perfectly honest, I wanted the iphone 4 when it came out, but my dad wouldn't go for that seeing as I was only a year into my 3g. However, he was all about me getting a new android and learning how to mod it, as he is a software programmer and all of the guys at his job were getting into android. I was originally going to buy a nexus one, but not being able to play with one in a store before I bought it pushed me to the captivate. Now that I'm on android, however, I don't think I'll go back to ios until they throw at least a 4.3" screen with some sort of amoled technology in an iphone, because my biggest beef with iphones is basically the screen. Right now, samsung has my complete loyalty, mostly because of their beautiful screens.

I agree with the OP.
After a few days of shell shock I have really learned to enjoy the Samsung Infuse 4g. But I would have returned it if I didn't have the Infused 2.0.2 mod. How do casual users actually use it out of the box with quirks like poor GPS, battery performance and occasional app issues? Beats me. Low expectations I guess?
The Infuse hardware is extremely nice but android reminds me of windows mobile on my ole Audiovox PPC-6700 smartphone from 5 years ago. You just gotta play with it to make it work...I guess that's the appeal.
I figure you are either in bed with Apple or Google (I shouldn't leave out Microsoft since my son says his Windows 7 phone is great), so if the new Apple phone comes out with a bigger screen...I'll probably switch back...just need something that works reliabily.
I absolutely love this.phone. I've had no problems what so ever. I def hated stock but only because it would randomly freeze. My sister has iPhone4 and she wishes she had my phone. This phone is great once you do a few tweaks but come on is a pc billy badass right out of the box? ( well sometimes) I just hate the iPhone/apple deal. This phone is America and iPhone is Communist Russia. Haha

This may seem very obvious, but adjusting the screen brightness will do wonders for your battery, make sure no apps are running in the background hogging up the battery. I also recommend not using a task
Killer or manager. Stock should work just fine.

Haha

My only beef with the android os is that trying to theme this compared to iOS is awful. There aren't any really good themes for android compared to iOS. Other than that I think android out of the box destroys iOS. I miss themes a little BUT I spent way to much time doing it. I like the fact I can watch HD YouTube videos without another app. I enjoy having flash on my device. I enjoy custom keyboards without an extra add on not to mention launchers. I LOVE my 4.5 inch screen. Anyway just wanted to say I love my infuse.

i think it is...well when i installed gingerclone i love it now. original software was -so-so for me...
what do you guys think?
For a mid-range phone, the Sidekick is pretty good device. You could do much worse. The keyboard and data speed are very nice. I just hope AT&T doesn't get their hands on T-Mobile. I can't afford AT&T's prices.

It's the only phone I have found so far that has been a worthy replacement of my old G1.
I just demand having a full-keyboard. Works great in my work environment, and I don't have to use a ****ing Blackberry

I like the keyboard but I came from a blackberry. Where my bb's keyboard was just perfect. And I don't really find a difference in 4g...it just seems the same as 3g. And agree. At&t is money.

Came from a blackberry, I love that keyboard over my sidekick. But sidekick keyboard is nice too. And I definitely agree with a keyboard demand. I'm afraid that if I drop a full touch screen phone, the screen will crack and I wouldn't be able to do anything till I get it fixed. .

I believe that it is, TRUE it is a midrange phone but when looking at phones with full keyboards, the sidekick has an amazing one. When i was choosing a phone i was stuck between the Sidekick or the G2(a real smartphone), after playing with both of them, I fell in love with the Sidekick's keyboard and the snap of the keyboard, The G2s seemed flimsy and would close on me if i was holding it up(like when laying in bed). The 4G speed is pretty great but thats because i actually download ROMs and stuff directly to my phone since my home internet is basic DSL and nowhere near as fast. As for the bugs, and there are many, they can be solved with a simple flash. I do notice that the phone can be kind of sluggish at times, like when i'm playing certain games it doesn't respond to what i'm doing.
Oh wow, didn't realize I wrote all that and i woulda kept going. Bottom line, One of the BEST midrange phones and even better than alot of smartphones. If people give it a try, they will fall in love with it
hey Im new here in fact this is my first post but I hated my sk43g for freezing and lagging constantly...my frustration led me here and I agree with mksin since ive been using the gingerclone rom with kg2 modem my phone has been running great and I honestly want to keep modding this thing to see what it can really do
For the past few days I've been enjoying the skyrocket but I've been feeling a bit nostalgic after ditching my iPhone 3GS. I find the size of the phone to be a tad too big for me because I have to maneuver the phone a lot to slide down the notifications and the feel of plastic in my just doesn't seem right to me. I also feel that the phone lacks in music controls from anywhere whereas iOS double home press is so flawless. Does anyone have any tweak suggestion for this fix? Because If there isn't I'm just gonna go back to iOS since I feel so at home with it and with 4S jailbreak just around the corner, there's gonna be endless possibilities for it.
Thanks and Happy Holidays to all XDA members!
Man just give it some time you will get use to it. I gave up my iPhone 4s for this super skyrocket the thing is I love both platforms it came down to the screen for me iPhone to small yet better screen.
My needs are met I can't complain to much .... plus this white skyrocket is just out right beautiful

Man, I came from a 3gs, there's no going back. There are things I miss about iOS, but its all made up by features I love in android OS. I pick up my wife's 4s occasionally and laugh at how tiny the screen is. Personal preference, but I would stick it out a bit as I too had these same feelings.

Skyrocket should automatically show the music controls on the lockscreen while playing.
And the plastic, you just need time, you get used to it.

Oh I was talking about using PlayerPro or in fact any alternative. Even with the stock player it only shows pause and play. Ugh I'm so bipolar with phones LOL. Mostly because I'm scared of any problems or buyers remorse that might come up in the future.
EDIT: nvm the stock has previous and forward kry s my bad
Do what I did and keep both

It really all depends on what you want to do with the phone.
I upgraded to the 4S before exchanging it with a buddy for his skyrocket. The ONLY thing I miss was the Visual Voicemail integration in the iPhone was better. But the Visual Voicemail AT&T provides is pretty neat too, not to mention google voice is another great option. Camera is great on both phones. Siri I didn't use much so can't comment on it. I will have to warn you, the battery life on the 4S has also suffered now that they've implemented the same drop-down notification window thing that Android does.
I agree a jailbreak will make the 4S a great device, and that's one of the main reasons I switched is because the damn jailbreak is taking sooo long. Here they've already rooted this bad boy, and made ROM's for it. Plus I hate going through iTunes. I would much rather drag-n-drop songs and videos directly into the phone (personal preference). Another thing is, LTE is enabled in both New York and NJ and the speeds I get on the Skyrocket are pretty awesome.
These are just the points I thought of when making a decision. I might switch to another Android device in a few months, but I'm done with iOS. It's stagnant now.
@abudabu. I agree with your points as I was thinking the same things. However I have been having audio issues as posted in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408545

I've had the phone for about 3 weeks. I did look at an iphone, but the Skyrocket really grabbed my attention. Winamp is great for music, and I also did not want to be tied to itunes. Even if you don't root and flah a rom, there are great customizations available through android market. Give this phone a chance, it is winner in my opinion.

Listen, if one gets used in a specific interface, other interfaces may look difficult to work with and master. So, if the phone is too big for your hands, and you have usability issues, why fight it? Go back to iPhone. Of course, within 2 - 3 months, the Skyrocket would be running ICS and the UI would be different again. I personally love the phone, I think that it is a great piece of hardware, but size and previous patterns of use is something that would be experienced differently by individual users.
If you want to stick it out, then you must learn a bit more about ICS (Android 4.0) because this would be the OS that you would be running the longest in this phone. My guess is that by the time there is Android 5.0 out there, you would be ready for an upgrade!!!
Get that sweet Iphone.. I mean that awesome 3 inch screen and all the Isheep followers.. who doesnt want that?
I had a Icrap for 3 days.. its so small and you can't do anything with it but look at it..
The SR or any other Android is much better than any Iphone..
get go launcher, our adw launcher, they have downward swipe to get notification down. so that we don't need to have super long thumb.

iPhone 4s is outdated
I can't ever go back to iPhone 4s. Maybe when iPhone 5 is 4.5", offered external storage support, LTE, and DivX, XviD, MKV support....then they've finally caught up.
Not to be mean, but if you have to ask. I hope you are still able to return the real phone for a childs toy. Yes i have seen a 5 year old use an iphone, and i think Fisher Price has some new iphone cases coming out next year.
^^^^^^^^_Lol true true true^^^^^^^^^^^
I agree with everything that you guys said above about the size and the plastic but it is lighter and the screen size is just phenominal compared to the iphone. My friend has an iphone 4s and he is always jealous of how customizable my phone is. I think that is the strongest part of the Android OS, the fact that your phone is totally unique to you
Let me clearly tell you who suppose to use i****!
Kids under 10!!
And Oldies Over 60!!
If you are not in one of those categories than i don't feel like explaining you the difference. Because I think You know the difference between the two.
One is Windows 8 and other is Window XP!
There you have my opinion and I m sure many will agree with me.
If you agree with me Thumbs UP!
Coming from the iPhone 3GS, I don't regret moving to the SR at all. So much more customizable, bigger screen, great interface. I don't even notice the plastic on the phone, because I always use a case on my phones. And, I'm using Go launcher, which is a fantastic interface. It took awhile to get used to android vs. iOS, but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Keep it, and you won't be sorry!
See even former iphone users know iphone cant compete with android (skyrocket) You should listen to her
