IMEI Messed up, help please! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was told to post here so:
Hi,
Yesterday I flashed a custom ROM , the rom somehow messed up my IMEI number.
Then i went back to the forum and found out that everyone who flashed the rom got his IMEI messed up and we all got the same IMEI now, i still have calls working but im afraid they will stop working soon, i know what was my original IMEI, can anyone help us please. (Heres the rom i flashed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034130)
I saw that the devs on samsung captivate managed to restore their imeis, there should be a way to do that to the nexus s.

Same Problem with my phone...

same here
I'm restore my backup .. and nothing change
and imei still changed :S

Same here, i think the phone is as good as network dead.

Hi all, I also was unfortunate to flash this rom resulting in the changed imei issue. My Phone was displaying emergency calls only and i was unable to connect to data services. I used Odin to flash back to stock GRH 78 ticking the phone efs clear box . After rebooting i checked my imei number but it still displays the wrong number. However my phone now connects to the network and i can make and recieve calls and data is enabled. Not a full fix and i am not sure for how long it will work but definately an improvement on the very expensive paperweight i had. Hopefully a full fix will come soon.

Trying that~!
UPDATE :
Nope Odin again didn't help.

Isn't it kinda stupid to discuss this in not only one or two but four threads? I get it, you guys want a fix and I feel with you, but having four threads will only cause confusion.
How about you all agree on one and work together to fix it instead of dividing your efforts?

Can you explain what version of Odin you used - Odin3 v1.8 ??
What rom did you flash stock GRH78 ??
Did you use a .pit file and if yes which one ??
What boxes were ticked and de-ticked in Odin ??
Cheers mate

Hi,
I used odin 3v1.8 and the stock GRH 78 rom. I opened odin and loaded the
bootloader, Pda and scs files and ticked the phone efs clear box ,this was the only box i manually ticked all other boxes were left in their default state. i did not have a pit. file. Previous to using odin I had just unlocked my bootloader as it was locked. Odin won't work with bootloader locked all atempts to access download mode were met with a unlock bootloader screen.
After flashing I checked my emei no. but was disappointed to find no change. I then checked for system updates and clicked on the update which started to download. It then suddenly dawned on me that i had not linked my phone to my router and that data was enabled. I cancelled the Gingerbread update and went into notifications and saw my network instead of the previous Emergency Calls Only. A quick phone call verified that my phone was now connecting to the network. I then connected to wifi and installed the update.
I am still stuck with the wrong emei but can now connect to the network and
have restored my favourite rom from a nandroid. The only issue i now have is the
wrong emei but for now my phone functions perfectly

Probably something messed with your /efs partition.

Why did you have to do that? I don't assume you have a backup of /efs, do you?

Y'all could try to look in the forums of the various Samsung Galaxy S variants, AFAIK there are ways to restore your IMEI on this kind of Samsung phone, maybe they apply to the Nexus S as well.

I could not say for sure because I don't know what process you used, but I Would say you just may need to downlaod the Factory TAR file using oden into your phone. Just make sure you Don't use the PIT file when you do it. Look in the Android Development section for the Tar file and the process of using Oden.
thanks for the reply.. did try loading just the tar files using odin but still no progress... another info, when i turn on the phone the notification drop-down does show the name of the network and says no service.. does that ring a bell ??
Cracked it !!
turns out that the software factory reset isn't all that effective and i tried the the hard reset by entering the code *2767*3855#... it worked like a charm and this time I had the carrier signal !!!!

Good to hear you resolved your issue.
Hi, is having a corrupted IMEI prohibits you from getting network signal? I have weird IMEI characters (not numbers) after unlocking SGS4G and I cannot get any netwrok signal. Hope you can advise me what to do or check. I have exactly the sasme IMEI with this post.

Hi Jager555, do you think it would be wise to try it out. I am not that confident to try it out because we have a different IMEI situation and I am afraid to brick another phone (bricjed captivate before). That is why I am waiting for someone to update the toher thread because that thread has the same IMEI that I have. If I won't be bricking my phone, then I would more than happy to try it out.
did you try disabling wifi calling? Same thing happened to me
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App
i cant guarantee that you wont brick your phone. its just something to try. as ricky said, disable the wifi and see if that helps, but if not, your phone doesnt work either way. im not sure if you can flash another rom and see if that helps too.
the thread i posted said "I recently used one of the unlocking tools that are available on the Android market, and one of them screwed up my IMEI so badly (it contained garbage characters, not just numbers)"
i figure thats the problem you have. if you dont want to try it, bump this thread and try to get a response from the smarter people. lol. im still a noob, good luck! i hope you get it fixed soon.

For those who have no baseband and null Imei on their i997...

Im not sure were to put this so called tutorial so mods feel free to move it to were it belongs if its not supposed to be here. I was having a big issue with my Samsung i997 thats was showing no baseband on settings, No imei null/null and of course didnt have any signal. I started a couple threads about things related to that. No luck, until a member called Truckerglenn pointed me to a efs .tar file he had made that fixed his phone.
So before i start, credit for the efs file goes to Truckerglenn i had nothing to do with that. Then, i want to make this clear, This worked on my i997, it doesnt mean it could work on other phones but for some reason i think it will. I messed up mine on purpose a couple times after i solve it just to see if it was a real solution or just luck. It worked every single time like a charm. With that said, i got to make clear i didnt have a copy of my original efs file. I have deleted the efs file a couple times also. So i think none of you could mess a phone worst than i did, and i still managed to bring it back to life using this method.... So lets talk about what i did:
First download Truckerglenns efs .tar file located here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438113
In my case i used the infuse unbrick ODIN file so i dont know if it works with any other firmware or not.
Open the ODIN file located on the infuse unbrick files and click efs clear, yes i know it sounds very risky and people have made clear that is not recommended but hey, you cant mess up your phone worst than you already have so. Anyways, put the infuse ODIN files were they belong, pit, pda and phone. Then here comes the tricky part, i used the Truckerglenn file in the csc box to flash it with the unbrick files.
Click start and the phone will flash the stock Froyo for the i997, wait until the flashing ends. Then when the phone reboots into recovery before hitting reboot go to wipe data/factory reset and click it. Then you can hit reboot phone and if youre lucky enough you will have your signal, restored imei number and baseband version.
Like i said this worked for me and i cant asure you it will work for you. But after all those weeks i spent dealing with this without success and having deleted efs many times and messing the phone that much, i didnt have anything to lose. Also thank Truckerglenn for his efs if this work on your phone, after all im just giving you an idea on how i made it work on mine but i didnt create a file or anything i just flashed it the way i just told you. Good luck guys and keep up the good work!
this happens to me as well, but flashing an efs didn't help me. any other ideas?
Step by step??

So, I am having same problem as u were. One thing that I want to make sure is do i clear efs and then flash ?? or just click the box on the efs clear and put everything and flash it??
So here is first option - You check on the clear efs box and then click "start". After it's finished, put other files and click "start" button again.
Here is second option - You check on the clear efs box then put all files and click "start" button and done.
which one is correct way to do this process??

It's been a while now, but if I remember the Clear EFS box was checked, so go with option 2.
But hey, right now your phone is 'FUBAR'. Try different settings if one doesn't work, maybe another one will.:good:

Ok, my phone got fixed by AT&T. But it wasn't software problem. My radio chipset was burnt. I checked and when AT&T saw that, they just replaced my phone to new one. For free. Pretty happy now. Thanks for help tho
Thanks!
OMFG...I bricked my Infuse a while back and I thought all hope was lost. I have bought a Note since then but I wanted to sell it and wait for the Note2 while I could still get a pretty penny for it.
This worked like a champ.
I basically followed your instructions using the Unbrick package here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27286083#post27286083
I also checked the EFS clear checkbox. I didn't have to factory reset from recovery either. It just rebooted and I popped in my SIM and it worked!
So I haven't gotten to the stage where I do not have signal... but do plan on moving my infuse from 4.0.4 to 4.1.1. Through this process, it has been noted that you could lose efs. So before I tried to install the rom, I backed up my efs through root explorer. Within this app, all I did was copy my whole efs file and pasted it to my SD card. After this, should my efs be fully backed up? And if I were to install jb and WERE to lose signal, how would I go about restoring it? My efs is on my internal storage..
Thanks

@TokyoLee
It would be best if you informed us of the upgrade path you took.
Slim ROMs (I am assuming you are trying to flash a JB 4.2.2) are known to cause loss of IMEI if flashed directly from ICS. Best solution would be to flash a CM10 and then a CM10.1 before flashing SlimBean. I have followed this path and have had no problems although I have gone on to Rootbox 4.2.2.
scott.hart.bti's Unofficial CM10.1 post has instructions for the proper upgrade path, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28842232&postcount=1
andros11's "[Guide] How to Flash Jellybean" here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1878458
is an essential and important read to avoid any IMEI snafus.
Also, and this important since almost every JB ROM thread mentions it at one point or another: REMOVE your external micro-SD card from the device before flashing a JB ROM.
Hope this helps.

You may have to start fresh from GB [or Froyo]. That would be the best recommendation.
qkster's posts are valuable in how to get back to GB. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081

Unless you have your EFS backed up which you can flash via ODIN or Heimdall it is impossible to get tour IMEI back.
Best is to go all the way back to GB.
Called at&t Sim cards shot not the usual imei probs

Do not even think about doing such a silly thing. This is an Infuse specific efs. You cannot flash it to the I-9000 or I-9100, for example. The partitions are different on different Samsung phones, they are not necessarily interchangeable.
Unless there are clear instructions available, you could end up with a very expensive brick.

restored the samsung official VZW rom and binary.
I removed the superuser and the unlock tools...
I still have no ERI and no service..
when i remove the sim card it tells me to insert it... obviously
when i put it back in an reboot it says "searching for service" and "everything i screenshotted... the imei is what i inputed with the tool in the imei tool thread you guys gave me...
however my wifi does work and my rom boots just fine... and when i factory reset my number shows up in the MDN field...
it honestly seems like the way the phone would communicate with the towers is screwed.

Alright, this just comes off as being a jerk. It sounds like he did (try to) backup his IMEI. Also, I don't see him blaming anyone for his "mishap". He was also very polite in asking for help. So was there a need in being a jerk(not just directed at you, as you were one of 3 or so to act as if he was wrong here)? I mean isn't the community here to help people? I could understand if he said ......OMG, I brickated my fone.....I hate you guys, you borked my phone.......But he did neither of those. It sounds like he read the guide, and still something got screwed up along the way. It happens. But there really isn't a need for posts like this.
Does anyone have a fix to help me???
My Phone detects no service at all... zero bars....
the wifi works, the bluetooth, pretty much the whole rom.
I just flashed the VRALF ROM directly from samsung and still nothing...

My PRL version is there... still no ERI
It says the signal strength is -120 dBM 99 asu
My Android Version is 4.0.4 at the moment

This owner had a similar problem, perhaps - they fixed the IMEI and related issues as described in a helpful link and their followup post:

You might consider taking the suggested link within that thread, then doing what the original poster did to restore their phone's configuration and see if that helps get out of roaming.

Hello, I had sent you a message to try and help as much as I could but you opened a thread so I'll help you on here.
First. Double check all twrp folders using a file Explorer. Some roms when flashed through twrp automatically back up your efs partition.
Second. If the folders are blank then we'll proceed to try other methods of fixing your imei.
I assume since you went from having a blank imei to that weird number you tried one of the methods you found through Google.
There are ways to manually reenter your imei if the methods found on Google fail. Follow the instruction in the site below (I highly suggest using the terminal emulator method) and report back here. Your imei can be found on your Sim card or the bigger card your Sim came in.
Flash with stock 5.1.1 ROM via odin.

If it's illegal, then it doesn't belong here. End of story.

This right here.
I have cleaned this thread, and I don't want to see any posts about IMEI modifying or anything illegal here.
You can try stock flashing, rebuilding an EFS partition somehow (probably impossible) or repair shop, but any talk of anything illegal and the moderators will take action on your account.
Thanks.
Have you tried searching for a Galaxy s6 efs repair script?
If nothing has worked you definitely need to go with a repair shop. Either a third party repair or try to warranty replace your phone through Samsung. If you go the Samsung route Odin flash 100% stock firmware then send it in to them and see what they say
yeh i boght new s6 edge lolllllll bbut i i learned to back up

[Q] PLEASE, desperate help needed.

Got a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus a few days ago, installed TWRP and rooted etc and installed CarHDRom with no problems at all.
However, when version 2.1 came out, I flashed it and all worked perfect...BUT....could not and can not make any calls or texts etc.
Imei info screen is showing all zeros etc.
Can someone please help me to get back connected so my imei number is back and i can actually use the sim??
Please, i'm desperate....been trying for hours.
The first screenshots shows you the contents of my backup in the TWRP folder.
Other 3 showing errors i'm getting.
thanks
Matt.
please check, and tell me, what does it say on the back of the phone?

I imagine you flashed stock to see if that can fix the issue?
twrp sometimes fail to restore the carpet containing the ime info so if its not working with your backup go back to stock, start again your twrp/root and flash another rom

just flash back to stock and dont root or anything, watch wich csc r u flashing cause thats the file that restores the efc info...just flash to stock u dont need to unroot ull lost root if u go back to stock remember to not flash using home csc or ull not wipe nothing and ull not get efs carpet back
try to use a different csc to force full wipe of the phone otherwise ull not fix it....personal experience
before rooting again first see if the imei info is back
Just a friendly reminder that on any internet forum, it's helpful and courteous to use a subject line that's informative about your topic. That way, other users can tell at a glance whether your thread is something that they want to read about or are able to contribute to.
