[Q] Nexus S freeze while charging battery - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I experienced this trouble in the last days:
while the nexus s is charging battery (I usually connect the phone to the charger during the night) frequently it freezes... the display become completely black and the softouch leds switch on, I need to remove battery...
Initially I think the problem is my modded rom (I use NSCollab 23), but yesterday I restore an old image (NSCollab 21) that is very stable (I used in the past for 3-4 weeks without problems) but same freeze happened last night...
I use original charger.
Riccardo

i also had this happen the other night running cm7. im back to a stock rom & kernel and all seems well.

Now I'm Triyng with SuperAOSP rom...

Thanks for your reply, NSCollab is a Cyanogen derivation.. But strange I experiencing this trouble all the night last 4 days after many weeks everything goes well..
I find discussion on this bug on Cyanogen forum now (can't post external url sorry)

have you been undervolting your phone? it happens to me when i uv too much.
if that's the case do the uv in steps.

No, I didn't touch cpu/voltage parameters.
Anyway yesterday I installed SuperAOSP rom and this night while charging no freeze.

stock roms & kernels seem to play the best with the ns4g atm.

[Q] 6hrs and the battery is dead

hi!
im on ARHD 3.6.4 , my phone battery used to drain more then usual but still i managed to work with it.
this morning i think i broke a record while my battery last only 6hrs!!!
i changed only two things this morning.
1. i installed battery calibration app and when my battery was on 100% i ran the program to wipe my battery stats file.
2. i installed mighty text to text sms from my computer and not my phone..
any chance doing one of these two caused the prob?
any help will be great!
thanks!
after calibration it takes a few days for the battery to settle. So wait a few days and battery will be better

I think it's a kernel problem, I switched to the Bricked kernel and back to normal now. There was a problem with the phone staying awake. I killed my first battery in six hours too and that was using Juice Defender also!
Yep kernel problem. Mentioned a million times on the arhd thread. Best bet is bricked kernel for now. No more issues since
i restored 6.3.3 and resolve this issue until confirmed new and good version of a ARHD
I was also using ARHD with Faux kernel.
The battery was really back and would be under 80% after a couple of hours of doing nothing!
Flashed the Bricked kernel and no problems now. Battery is great!
i understand but as much as i saw from other posts around the forum is that
faux kernel is something which is working better with ARHD , it uses all it tweaked and stuff..
is bricked kernel will work good with ARHD? if so why mike doesnt post his rom with bricked also?
there must be a reason
yea i was also in the 5 hour battery life boatt. but im using coredroid 2.5 and was using fauxs kernell. Faux definatly knows what hes doin and is a very respectable dev, he helped my g2x feel like i didnt get soo ripped off by buying itt lol butt yea i listened to everyones advice and switched to bricked and so far my battery is alot better, i fell asleep with out plugging it in to charge and i woke up with 75 percent, i fell asleep with it at 78..... fauxz kernel is great but it does hav some battery guzzling bug
Check out guide in my singature.. It will solve your battery problems in no worires
well i just installed the new ARHD with the new faux kernel and the battery is back to normal.
still getting dead fast but not in 6 hrs
so i guess it was rom / kernel issue and not something from my phone.
im 4 hrs without a charger and im on 80 percent so i think im good.
well , sorry to update that my phone battery keep getting drained fast.
i cant finish a working day.

What is installed kernel wise? What kind of usage do you do in a day? Could be sync settings as well.
arhd rom
faux kernel
medium use even towards light use.

[Q] How can I find what's draining my battery?

My sensation currently has a power drain that I can't seem to find the cause for. I'm using InsertCoin 3.4.2 with bricked kernel 1.5, using SPB shell 3D launcher, got an Anker battery, running tasker to cut data, wifi, gps, etc whenever the screen is off, setCPU running ondemand with max at 1536mhz and minimum 192mhz, etc, etc.
I fully charged my phone to 100% about two or three hours ago, and it's been pretty much left alone since. It's now down to 68%.
I've got BetterBatteryStats and SystemPanel, both showing nothing untoward, no active tasks, no wakelocks from what I can tell, etc. And according to the standard app for battery monitoring, it shows the various connections have indeed been turning off as intended, and the phone has been asleep nigh on all the time it's supposed to be.
Any ideas what's going on, or how I could look into it deeper?
I've just been playing with the phone pretty much non stop since I started this thread an hour ago, and the battery level is now at 60%. So that means it's actually consuming MORE power when it's not even in use!

Hi,
There is a lot of talk about battery consumption, and it's causes.
Most people will suggest trying a different kernel,or downclock it to 1.2 GHZ.
I've tried different kernels already, and underclocking the cpu seems to make little difference. As I say, setCPU should be knocking it down to 192mhz whenever the screen is off anyway!

Hi,
Is your ROM a 2.3.4 base or 2.3.5 ?
2.3.5 mate. It's InsertCoin 3.4.2, with sense 3.5 (which I'm not using in favour of SPB).

Hi,
I was going to suggest bricked 0.9.1 with a 2.3.4 ROM,because my son has had great results on his Sensation.
I do not know IC well enough to help.
Sorry.
No problem, thanks for your input anyway.

1)Try his new test version of bricked(beta4).
http://code.google.com/p/bricked/downloads/list
2)Charge to 100
3)Turn off, wait till green, unplug and plugin(bump charging)
4)Boot to recovery thru bootloader and wipe battery stats and then reboot unplugged
Drain you battery to 1, then charge up and repeat for a few days. And you can lower the clockspeed since you're using ondemand, you won't see a speed difference with 1.2 and higher. Oh and use ultra smooth rosie so the home will be faster...And see which apps are open in B/G.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302914
With the exception of trying the beta bricked kernel, I've already done all that when I first got my anker battery. It's not a calibration issue, it's that something is actually draining the battery even when it should be asleep.
And that rosie change isn't needed, as I'm not even using sense in the first place. I've got no real issues with how the phone actually performs as everything is already perfectly smooth. The only slight issue I have is since flashing the amaze camera, on rare occasions it can lock up when exiting it, requiring a battery pull to get going again.

Oops missed the part about SPB, I have been having similar issues but with Faux's kernel after using Amaze cam, but I doubt that could cause sleep drain. I think you drain is caused by the phone not entering "Deep Sleep", some rogue app is keeping the phone partially awake and sucking up juice. I'm gonna go on a hunch and say the phone is running around 1.x GHz while screen if off due to the app.

Hopefully mine can help you. I also noticed HUGE battery drain issues in the past using Bricked Kernel, so I then reverted to stock. Battery was GREAT, but the stock kernel blows. So yeah, I went back to bricked and using the 3rd? beta right now. My battery started dropping like crazy again, so I thought it was the kernel. Before, I used bricked and it was fine so again, I couldn't really blame the kernel. What I tried after that is deleteing my OC app (I've used both SetCPU and System Tuner) and since then, battery is great again! You can try this and hopefully it'll help!
Tried that already as I too suspected the OC app a few days ago. Made no improvements to battery life, so I've put it back on today. Not tried a different kernel yet though, as I'd read that the bricked kernel was the best choice with InsertCoin? I used faux123's kernel first of all, but found it ran hot and kept crashing...
Down to 30% now by the way.

That's what I'm suspecting too, but I don't know how to go about finding it. I've looked with SystemPanel and BetterBatteryStats and haven't spotted anything, but that could just be because I'm not 100% on what to look for. And why would setCPU not be overriding it and making it clock down to 192mhz whenever the screen is off anyway? Isn't that it's job?
Then try the stock and see if it's still draining. When I tried stock and everything was great, I just simply assumed that it wasn't an app. It was the kernel!
I'm not convinced it's the kernel though, as if it was then battery life would have been crap ever since I flashed it. It hasn't been, it's only been bad for the past few days. Are there any links to the stock kernel just in case I can't find anything else?
- mine is 24 hrs
- heavy use 16 hrs
. Used some aninations only
. Turn off wifi when not in use
. Used only 20% brightness
. Used juice defender
. Downclock to 1.2 ghz intellideman
And ofc my kernel and rom that im using right now!
Thank me if I helped
I use bricked and i actually got better batter out of it but itsn still not up to par.. However fauxs ran faster but my phone was getting up to 47C... Way too hot.. I don't know why mines running so hot.. Using coredroid 2.6. 1.5 bricked kernel. wiped dalv and cache and battery stats... blah.. any input? i had setcpu and deleted it.
SetCPU is uninstalled again now to see if it was causing anything, and there's still a drain on the battery when it should be sleeping. Does anyone have any tips on how to find what's keeping it awake? It's been fully charged again, been unplugged for just one hour and it's down to 80% battery. Not even been using it apart from me flashing the InsertCoin Bravia addition onto it, making it 3.4.3.
One thing I have noticed though, is that BetterBatteryStats says the RILJ dialler has been running for 5m 33s since it was last charged, 775 times, 8.9%. This is on the partial wakelocks screen, whatever they are. Everything else listed is under 1%, with the only exception being the alarm at 1.6%. What does this mean?

Battery Dies Quick, WHY??

my NS4G with MIUI 2.6.1 and Matrix 20.0 Kernal goes to 98% as soon as i pull off the charger. if i use it for 45 minutes unplugged its dead. if i use it while its plugged in, it will die!
should i get a new battery?
Yeah that doesn't happen to me... I would try a full wipe and reflash the same ROM (or a different one) and reflash kernel.
If that doesn't work then I would try another battery because that drain seems abnormal
I just wanted to say that I have been having similar battery problems. Using the exact same ROM and Kernel as the OP, today my phone died within 6 hours of use, with the screen having been on for no more than 50 minutes. I also turned off data, and sync during this time, and had my screen's brightness at the minimum.
I've wiped and flashed AOKP b-38 today, and the consumption seems to be much better.
Any thing to help?
thought i was the only one.
is it the kernal?
or is it because its time for a new battery?
How could I test to find out which it is...
Swap kernels. Probably easiest way to test.
Very possible its just an old worn out battery.
Sent by pocket technology.
hoping its just an old battery.
ive switched to CM9 / TouchWiz mod thinking it might be the ROM
im going to use the stock kernal from CM9 for a day to see if i could tell a difference.
ordered a new battery anyways.
saw on a forum somewhere a guy complaining about this problem since he switched to ICS ROMs .. hopefully thats not the case because i LOVE 4.0.X

same problem, switched from MIUI to CM9 ... still using Matrix 20.0
Try wiping battery stats

If it were processes/functionality causing your battery drain, that quick, the phone would be piping hot at the same time!

yes, the screen also gets EXTREMELY hot!
Well in that case, what have you got installed? If you have apps constantly syncing, that could be part of the problem. What are your battery stats saying is using the most battery? My phone gets warm, but as expected since its being used. If its not being used,it could be a rogue app or the phone could be constantly searching for a good signal.
Sent by pocket technology.
i have barely any apps.
i only have facebook, xda, sportscenter and instagram installed besides GApps.
i have the problem even before i download apps as i just flashed CM9
also its so bad, that if i start using my battery when its @ 10% PLUGGED IN, it will eventually die on me. even though its charging..

[Q] SkyHigh XXLPP ROM Battery drain

Hi,
I'm using this ROM on my 6810:
[ROM] 14JAN [P6810 Wi-Fi] [Aroma] [V6SuperCharged] SkyHigh XXLPP ICS v4.0 from UpInTheAir. I use the Nova launcher and TWRP recovery, plus the FC fix, if that matters.
Anyway, it works really well most of the time, smooth and stable with excellent battery life. The only problem is that sometimes the battery drain goes through the roof - a fully charged battery at night will be completely flat next morning (usually it only drops by about 3-5%). This has happened only 3 times since flashing the ROM, so it's not a huge problem.
The apps I have had running were not the same when it happened. Now I usually use Task Manager to kill any running apps and clear RAM before going to bed, but it still happened once.
I'm noob, so I don't really know how to fix it. This never happened on stock XXLPP ICS, but this ROM performs noticeably better, and I would like to keep it if it's an easy fix.
Any help appreciated.

Problem with my nexus 5

Hi guys, last night I flashed elemental x .38 kernel paired with my slimkat weekly 4.6 build and a weird problem occurred...
so i went to bed with 93% battery left and I woke up with 82% (i never had deep sleep issues before with any kernel) and then when i turned on my phone, it was EXTREMELY laggy... I thought i was a kernel setting, it was not... I reflashed the kernel and tried franco, and used stock slimkat and they were ALL laggy. I don't know why as to it is laggy since it has never been for my phone, I didn't do any tweaks overnight and the kernels are all pretty much stock settings.
Can anyone help!?

Use this app
http://goo.gl/Ba3W4M
Observe it for few days
Looking at what is causing battery drainage
Just make sure that NFC, Background wifi scanning, Auto syc, bluetooth, wifi, data are off when not needed
If there is no result, post that app screen shot here
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I think I found the error. Only my Nova launcher was lagging so I thought my whole phone was lagging while scrolling..
However the battery is still draining quite quickly than normal...I'll take a look for a few days with this app.
Thanks
