i have my 16gb class 4 micro sd but its reading one as an sd (this imaginary one) and my actual memory card as an EMMC. how is this possible and what could fix it? i tried wiping and reflashing and im on the latest cyan nightly.
The phone has two sd cards, the internal and the external. The internal card also has 16 gb worth of memory, the same as your external card.

Since the external sd is basically just used for storage, is there any real reason to partition it? just came over from a G1 and all this extra internal memory is throwing me off...

Did you mean the internal?
the purpose of the internal storage partitioned is for those who are not planning to buy an external sd card.

Thanks for the response... For my G1 my external SD card, I had a FAT32, EXT and swap partition... I was wondering if I needed to do that with my new sd card that I am getting... Since there isn't a need for apps2sd/ext, do I still need the partitions?

I keep seeing references to internal SD card and External SD card, and just now I was using SDMaid and it lists Sdcard (8GB) and External SD card (empty). Is there a second slot for another SD card that I am unaware of.
I put the 8GB card that came with the phone in the slot next to the sim.
I have wondered this for a while and after searching, I decided to pose the question here to get clarification.

No, there is other slot. Some phones, like the Galaxy S and its variants, do have a soldered on internal SD and a slot for an external. The Desire HD(and therefore Inspire) do not. You can in theory partition your SD card and it is supposed to show up that way, but DO NOT DO THIS.
That's what I thought, but I had to check.
Why does my 16gb sd card only show to be 6or so gb? I know its partitioned but where is all of the other space?

Just a question. Are you looking at the sdcard OR sdcard_external sdcard in your file explorer???

sd card. in linda file manager
Reformat it. Either it is messed up and there is unused space not accounted for, or it is a bogus card and not really 16gb (many China cards are fakes).
What you are seeing is the internal SD card that came with the phone, it's non removable and show up as SD. The 16gb card you put in is listed as external like mhsamma said.
Does this phone actually need an SD card if already rooted and rom? Can this work on the internal memory just fine?

You in no way need an external SD card unless you want one.
Running just fine withouta second SD card. The Captivate has a built in internal SD card.

Okay, so I am just tired of the confusion in my head here.
I'm not a noob with rooting or anything of the sort, but I am not used to a phone with an internal SD card and an external SD card.
I am downloading a ROM to flash to my Galaxy S3 and it saves to the SD card... does that mean that it is saving to the phones memory and not the actual SD card I put into it?
There is an SD Card and an external SD card.
Which one is which? Haha.
And if I am right, like I think I am... the external SD card is the actual SD card I put into it and the SD Card is the phones internal memory.
How can I download from the internet and have it save onto the external SD?
AND...
When backing up a ROM before flashing a new one, do you recommend that I back up to SD card or external SD card?
And do you recommend I flash a ROM from the SD card or from the external SD card?
It seems that IF my external SD card somehow decided to corrupt while I was running off of a ROM that was installed via external SD card, that it wouldn't be able to boot after it corrupted.
Am I correct on all of this?
Sorry. Your answers are more than appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
I have mine setup to download the roms, pictures, media or backups to the external sd card. In cwm I save a backup to both internal and external for the extra security. I just use external for everything because I have a 32gb sd card that has everything. The internal memory is just used for system stuff.

Perfect. That's absolutely everything I needed to know. I guess no matter what you download from the browser, it will download to the internal memory... but you can manually move it to the external SD with Root Browser.
Thank you man.

Go into the advanced settings option on your Browser and it gives you the option to have things downloaded to memory card or internal. Just change that to memory card and it will do it for you.
