looking for new android phone

i thought i'd ask openly since i've done a fair amount of homework, but i'm still inexperienced when it comes with rooting these devices etc.
i used to be a symbian guy, then switched to htc only winmo phones, and joined this forum back in 04. we would flash custom roms etc etc (i really enjoyed it)
what phone do you guys recommend that's either out now or coming out soon for a US provider? i'm looking for top of the line, super fast, easily rooted, new roms flashed (no encrypted boot loaders etc)
i've been on the iphone since 07 (2g, 3g, 3gs) but the new iphone4 just doesn't impress me very much and i'm ready to finally make the move to (what i believe to be) a better device.
any opinions out there? i'm currently with at&t, but can jump ship to verizon or t-mobile (i kinda like the htc evo, but i always hear people complain about sprint here) and i read the droid x will most likely have an encrypted boot loader, so i'm not sure about verizon either.

I was in the same situation as you last week. I have no complaints about ATT's service in my area and signing a contract with another carrier didn't look too appealing since I've been out of contract since 08.
The Nexus One meets all of your criteria and then some. I do not have that gadget lust anymore, I don't feel that it is incomplete like I always felt with my other devices. Hell the only thing I really felt that was missing from the stock build is waking with the trackball, I too came from an iPhone and it just feels natural as opposed to using the sleep button.
I don't think you can really go wrong with any of the top tier Android offerings right now. They all have strengths and weaknesses but the simple fact that the Nexus One gets the (official) updates first made it an easy choice for me.

thanks for the reply. i've been looking at the nexus one for the same reasons you described... the ability to get updates quickly, and the fact it comes with a vanilla rom. i wish i could get the att version with a discount... it looks like if i go with it i'll need to get t-mobile.
i was a little hesitant just because im not sure how it holds up against the latest round of android devices (due to it being out for a while now) but it definitely looks fairly solid from what i've ready.

i ditto the nexus one..IF you want to stay with ATT..but a very customizable phone is the motorola droid..plus a physical keyboard is a BIG plus for me..but the droid is a little old and you should wait for the droid 2 next month..the thing is..who knows who long is going to take for dev to start working on droid 2...droid already has a large drawer full of kernels, themes, roms..ect

yeh, i think theres just too many phones out/coming out to make a decision. the nexus multitouch problem i keep reading about seems kind of annoying... i played with an evo on sprint today and apparently sprint has extremely slow data in my area (even tho it was full bars on 3g) and the droid x might have a locked/encrypted boot loader which i read will definitely affect the ability to flash roms (so i've read)
almost as bad as car shopping.

are you captivate owners very happy with the phone? im debating between the captivate and iphone 4.... but mostly likely will end getting the captivate. ive read some ppl having issues such as mms and gps and all that.... is the issue really bad? also how is the messaging on the device? is it kinda like the iphone? im using my iphone 2g cuz i had my tilt 2 but dropped it in water and now doesnt work.... so coming from an iphone 2g to a captivate or iphone 4 is pretty good. any suggestions and opinions are greatly appreciated!!

i struggled with the same decision. my fiance has the iphone4 and i had the 3g, so i was very used to the OS and style, etc. After a lot of research i decided to make the switch to the captivate and i am glad i did. no mms issues, and gps issues are easy to fix with a little searching in the forums. it offers so much more customization than the iphone4 and the larger amoled screen looks just as good as the retina display.

well, let me remind you something, this is the samsung captivate channel. Every single reply that you get will be slightly (or immensely) biased toward Samsung Captivate.
Currently, hardware-wise, nearly everything in the Captivate offers the top in the mobile market.

Messaging, don't worry if it's threaded or not. I'm pretty sure it is. If not, you can find app to fix that.
My phone is not rooted yet as I see there's not a reason yeeeeet. (probably soon since i hate the att bloatwares as they are actually running in the background all the time draining batteries / performance)
np. BE CAPTIVATED! You won't regret your choice. I have to admit that as of now the Android app is not THHHAT superb compared to the ios market, sometimes even halfbaked. BUT look at it this will it'll dominate soon.
Why?
iOS = Apple only.
Android = Samsung, Sony Ericsson, HTC, etc etc. It might take a while, but it's already up to par.

Overall, this is the best phone in the world (my biased opinion).
hardware wise: its the best phone available to the public in the world at this point in time. (fact)
Function wise: Once devs get through with it, it will be the best phone in the world. (Educated Guess)

-Notification bar on the top let you quickly toggle the wifi, bluetooth, silent, annddd vibration.
-there are million useful widgets that you can use in your homescreen, even though i don't use any of them xD
-games (oh my goodness, i haven't gotten the time [or the persistence against laziness] to download the emulators, once you download the emulators, you'll be able to play nearly ANY GAMES (PSX, gameboi, etc)
-i cannot comment on the calling / messaging quality since i have tmobile, i'm waitin for the unlock code (i've been using airplane mode with wifi on)

I am extremely happy with my captivate. I think its the perfect mixture of hardware and software...though there are a few sour spots that need fixing. Throw in the versatility of android and the unlocked nature if the captivate and this phone will be very popular.
This phone basically is four devices in one for me....phone...mp3 player...camera/camcorder...and internet device.

good choice picking up the captivate instead. I checked out the vibrant b4 i got this, and its felt/looked more like the ugly stepchild of the galaxy s series.

That's literally the first thing I noticed when I got the device. I was like HOLY SH!T it's GENIUS!

Not really, but I will be soon.
I'm really disappointed with the stock ROM, but 2.2 will fix most of the issues, and a custom 2.2 rom will fix all of them.
I really wish manufacturers and carriers would leave the rom alone. Fine, load your bloatware, I get it, you're trying to generate revenue, and it's simple enough to remove those things, but my captivate, while having significantly faster hardware, is much, much slower than my Nexus One on 2.1, even after doing everything I can.
From a hardware standpoint, I'm very happy with it. The rom is seriously lacking though.
Again, I'm coming from a vanilla android phone, so the difference might not be as big if you're coming from something sense or motoblur or any of the other skins manufacturers seem to love putting on android phones for no good reason.

To answer your question simply, so far yes I am happy with the Captivate. Would I be happier with an iphone4... probably so.
The iphone4 is a better phone hardware-wise. Better screen. Better camera. Better battery life. Equal CPU/GPU. Slimmer design (not by much though). GPS that actually works.
I knew this going in (well except about how pitiful the GPS is), and still bought the Captivate. Will I keep it beyond the 30 days? I dont know. The GPS is absolutely crap. It will not track you at all, even at jogging speed. If you are standing still it locks you pretty quick and accurate. But as soon as you start to move, its over. I have tried it on my bike and it wont even track me through my neighborhood, much less at 30 mph in your car. Highway speed, forget it. Its totally unusable for anything. There's others in here that try to use it for jogging and it says they went further than they really did because when you zoom in on the path it zig zags all over the place. Just know ahead of time, if you use gps on your phone often, do not buy this phone. And dont expect samsung to put out an update anytime soon. They are notoriously bad about updating software. Just ask any samsung smartphone owner.
I was coming from an iphone 2G and wanted something a little different. I guess I had gotten bored or complacent using iOS for 3 years. Now I am missing it. Android has gotten better, but its still not as rock solid and easy to use as iOS. I get several "Force Closes" a day, and I only had apps crash a couple times in 3 years with iOS. Though, if you like to constantly tinker with stuff, Android is for you. With all the variables there are lots of things you can play with, like widgets, different keyboards, etc. Also, cut and paste with android is not as good as it is on the iphone. Hopefully soon we will start to get custom ROMs, although so far not much has been accomplished yet as the source code for the Captivate still hasnt been released.
All in all, Captivate is a good phone, iphone4 is a great phone. Thats my honest un-biased opinion and I own the Captivate and I was a long time iOS user.

I can see your point of view, but if you have any interest in modding your phone, I would wait until a good aftermarket rom is out.
The stock Captivate rom is NOT a good indication of android. It's honestly horrid, in my opinion.

I returned my iphone 4 to get this phone. Don't regret it at all and I've been an iphone guy since the 3g and upgraded every year

Hey everyone,
Just joined the forums, and figured I'd earn myself a warm welcome by asking a question that I'm positive no one has asked before: Vibrant, G2 or myTouch HD?
I do have certain criteria that I'd like to share, as I've spent many hours reading up on the three phones. Here's my take on the three phones so far based on what's important to me:
Samsung Vibrant

AMOLED screen is amazing
16GB built in storage is great
Battery life sounds decent
Lightweight
Speaker is great
Fast CPU
Dislikes
Not stock Android, not sure how crippled 2.2 will be on it
Not sure if it will tether when 2.2 comes out

Can't store applications on SD card
Sounds like OTA updates have caused issues
Bloatware

Almost stock Android 2.2

QWERTY keyboard is handy

So, as you can see, I can find something to love and hate in all three. I'd like to hear comments regarding perhaps why you chose one over another. I'm also very curious to hear more about the myTouch, because right now I'm working off speculation.
I'm not looking for any of you to read my mind, but I am curious to hear others compare and contrast the three and share their preferences.

Vibrant or MyTouch.
The vibrants screen will amaze you. Its like an orgasm ona screen. Plus there's a mod for a front facing camera. Plus there's roms with vanilla android so its not bad.
The battery life is great.
The mytouch HD sounds good. So I'd wait for it in case

The more that I've read, I'm leaning more towards the G2. It sounds like several people get a couple days before having to recharge, and that people have been able to prevent the preloaded software from booting via the package manager.
Also, I just read that it sounds like the myTouch will have HTC Sense which, while not a bad thing, is a blocker to fast updates. I'd like to be able to upgrade to Gingerbread as soon as it's available, and it sounds like the G2 is the only phone (besides the Nexus One) that's going to be able to do that easily.
Finally, after reading up on the JI6 battery issues on the Vibrant, as well as the Mini Kies software that people are now having to run via Windows to get updates, it gives me a little less faith in Samsung.
I am still very curious to hear others speak about the speaker and the resetting issue on the G2.

Things you cannot change in a phone or upgrade are; screen, memory, processor. you have all of them as dislike or concern on hd or g2.
Your concern in regards of the vibrant, seem to be sw related. Being a Galaxy S phone. You have i believe, the larger group of modders, developers working on it worldwide, to get you a large array of options to upgrade, fix, or just show off your phone.

Chazz Thanks for posting the poll! I'm looking at a very similar predicament in replacing my Mytouch 3G (32B). At this point, I'm not sure if the MyTouch HD will have the capabilities that I'll want on it (SIPphone, Tether, ability to modify simple things like boot animations).
Vibrant biggest benefit (to me)- Can be rooted, tethered
MyTouch HD biggest foreseeable benefit - HSPA+, native 2.2

Just to add my 2c, The CPU in the G2 is actually faster than the Vibrant and MyTouch HD. 800MHz doesn't mean a thing, it's a new gen. CPU and it currently gets the highest scores of ANY mobile CPU out there.

If you look around you will see that the MyTouch HD/4G actually has the same Generation (45nm? I think) CPU in it, but the MyTouch will be clocked to 1GHz by default. If the MyTouch can be rooted I think that will convince me fully. I can always sell it in 6 months when something better comes out, 'cause it will.
Side note, the G2 and the MyTouch are only on T-Mobile. The Z (Sense version of G2) might come to another American provider.

I love my g2's speakers. I use them all the time with slacker radio. I'd also like to add that the g2 also supports wifi tethering once rooted using the free visionary app in the market. (One click root) And like what was mentioned above you can overclock the processor to out due any phone on the market. I will admit that vibrant screen is nice but that thing has to take up lots of battery. Oh i almost forgot the keyboard is awesome aswell. The Froyo 2. 2 is nice and very smooth. Has the vibrant gotten the GPS issue fixed?

Anyone else have any thoughts on these two (G2 and Mytouch) phones? I am on the verge of ditching my Vibrant (laundry list of issues spanning 4 phones) for either the G2 or Mytouch4G.
As both are HTC phones and fairly close in specs and build quality, does one have any real distinct advantage over the other? While I will certainly miss the Vibrant's screen, can't say I'll miss the dodgy Samsung support.

Alright so this is my first post but ive been downloading stuff off this site for a while. I started out with the htc mogul, then had touch pro, now have the touch pro 2. My contract with sprint has been done for over a year now, but have really been struggling choosing a new phone. I need to get new stuff now! I thought about the htc evo last year but didn't have 4g in the area at the time, but now i do so time to decide. So here are my tech options, please commit to help me decide:
iphone(with hotspot), ipad (wifi), mac book pro, iMac, Mac Pro, att dvr, apple tv
or
htc evo 3d (with hotspot), htc puccini(hope for wifi 3d version), asus g series labtop, and build two desktops one with gaming and one workstation, tivo, google tv
if I go with apple I will get att uverse and att wireless. - fear of data caps, throttling and crappy dvrs with limited simultaneous hd recording have kept me from going with the more simplistic layout with portable devices having great battery life that just always seem to work. Also, att having hspa+ as a backbone with lte seems too good to be true. (but job being sick doesn't inspire must confidence in apple, and living in the apple bubble is so limiting)
if i go with android/windows i will get sprint/time warner - i deal with time warner which will never upgrade to docsis 3.0 which is still slower then fiber, and sprint who has no overseas coverage, no lte, low coverage for when i travel inside the us, and have to listen to a retarded company talk about how they are going to have evo rev b, wimax, lte, and wimax 2 all at the same time because they have so much frequency stored from the nextel merger that they just sit on and use for crap like sprint id. I also don't have much confidence in clearwire or light squared really helping sprint.(plus i am worried about windows 8 being crap.)
In a perfect world I would live in a fios area, verizon wireless would use gsm instead of cmda, would have hspa+ and lte nationwide and would keep there unlimited data plans.
Also Im interested to see what happens with windows mango.

I don't know if I'm posting in the wrong area or there is something else I need to add. Any thoughts, ideas, experiences or anything else your thinking would be helpful. I guess I should add that the only android phones I would buy are htc phones. I think they have great build quality, no more locked bootloader, and I actually like sense iu. I hate motorola because of blur and samsung phones just seem cheap to me. I used my phones mostly for texting then calling, gps, internet, games, using it with my slingbox, youtube, and sometimes taking pictures, i don't need a physical keyboard, but i do want a large screen and it to be thin. I'm think that anything without a dual core isn't going to work with ice cream sandwich (that's the only reason I wont buy the flyer/evo view)

Na thx for the response. I really haven't learned proper etiquette for the forums because I never use them I really use them. I'll search for something that I think I want and download it ever since I got my mogul. I just thought maybe some of you guys would have some insight. I've never been an apple fan, but just sick of some stuff on our side. I'm going to getting the evo 3d and hope to see a wifi 3d htc puccini with 64 gb of storage coming out before I break down and get the flyer, evo view or transformer (not that I care about 3d but if I have it on the evo I hope I could use the content I have there on my tablet). Now, I just have to just countdown that days before ice cream sandwich.

Would you guys recommend the G2X now? (Vibrant Owner)

I'm currently on the ICS AOKP ROM for my Vibrant and I love mostly everything on it. Voodoo really makes it my go-to device for music because it sounds good and it sounds loud because of Wolfson DACs (one main reason why I'm considering the G2X: either that or the Galaxy S3, but I'm not sure the US is even going to get the Wolfson DAC). However, I've read issues with forced reboots and still hammering out the ICS stuff. I'm mainly interested in the G2X because I've read that the GPS works as great as Motorola's and HTC's. Basically: I want a phone that's as good as my Vibrant, but also has working GPS, as well as LED flash. Things like screen-type and weight isn't an issue.

To have good GPS you need to be on the latest baseband. There are only two custom roms that support it and they're both practically identical (one is based off the other, and the other is just a slightly modified version of stock).
That said I would choose my g2x over a vibrant any day. And if my ebaying is correct, the vibrant actually sells for more than the g2x, so you could possibly upgrade and make some money off of it.

Vibrant has official CM9 builds, G2x doesn't Stay with Vibrant or go for a SGS2.

being as i have owned the vibrant and now own a G2x, id say its a pretty safe jump. the internal storage is about half of the size of the vibrant but the dual core processor in the g2x rocks. I live in a pretty sprawling urban area and i need my GPS, so i stick with the latest baseband and GPS (and everything else for that matter) works perfectly. plus you get an 8mp camera over the 5mp cam on the vibrant and the front facing camera is always fun too =]

Exactly what I was going to write (mius the GPS stuff, mine still takes a bit to lock, but thats due to the rom I use) I just came from the Vibrant to this and couldn't be happier.

I wouldn't consider a switch to a G2X to be a worthwhile upgrade from most phones. I don't know the vibrant, but I have to think that you can do better than a G2X. There's little hope now of an official ICS ROM, unless T-Mobile announced something recently and I missed it. It's also taken a year for them to get their act together and provide a ROM with working GPS.
It's a dead-end phone, with other phones out there now that have ICS support, and newer phones coming all the time, why move to this POS? I own one, and I regret it. When the SGIII is available on T-Mobile if they won't work me a deal on an upgrade to that, I'll pay whatever I have to to terminate my contract and move to another provider. I feel really burned by the G2X and am very disappointed with the way LG and T-Mobile haven't supported it.

I don't think people here understand that this phone has some amazing development. Sure, some of HTC's phones and the nexus phones all have better support, but have you seen the development for the rest of android phones? Most phones you're lucky to have a couple ROMs to try out (and a lot of times they're just debloated or reskinned).

Thanks guys. It looks like I'm going to be in the market for a G2X in the near-future then. From what I gathered: the main problem of the G2X is the lack of software support from Nvidia and LG themselves because they have closed-source drivers that forces devs to do workarounds which can lead to inconsistencies. However, if you can hammer it all out, it should be a good daily driver that works.
Everyone gets a "thanks".
I'll eventually get a SGS3 if it can be confirmed that it'll get Voodoo Control support on the stateside. It was a huge blow to me that the SGS2 didn't have the Yamaha chip and therefore: no Voodoo LOUDER support.

Not to hate on either device, I would like to stay as unbiased as I possible could.
Development goes to vibrant, although no one should complain about the g2x's dev. As someone said earlier, at least we have different roms, some don't have any.
GPS definately goes to g2x, never got a vibrant lock to work. I found GPS lock working better on certain roms and that is all different with every g2x so u are going to have to expirement
Gaming: I don't game on my phone a lot but when I do sometimes to test, it never lagged, accept on some ics roms and its not the devs faults. Vibrant gaming is close, just takes longer to open up apps and lags a little. That is only after I used g2x then switched to a vibrant. As for you, you would have never have knew the difference until u try both so it doesn't matter. Also g2x can play Tegra games, dunno any use if that
Camera : I never use
Screen: I know almost everyone out here likes amoled screens and I'm the only one that hates it. Personal preference basically.
Music: get an Ios device! Haha jk, I am not a heavy listener but it works for runs so that's all that matters to me. Voodoo is awesome on vibrant, never messed with it on g2x.
Battery, I have only played with bionix on vibrant so I am comparing that with bionix on g2x. I seem to have better battery life on g2x but that's because I was experimenting with kernels so Idk, what is ur best battery life and ill compare it with mine.
Drotest? Goes to vibrant the "said" to be *ahem* fake aluminium on g2x is horrible, it can't scratch from ur fingernail or even cases. Aren't cases supposed to be protecting the phone? :banghead: as for glass cracking, Idk g2x will probably crack first because it is heavier, who knows?
Now if you read my whole post, u must be desparate to find out what phone to get Also remember don't care about what other people think, its ur phone and it's up to you in the end. Leta see how many typos u get because I am in mobile

Vibrant still has intermittent 911 dialing issues on CM 9 builds. Until FaultException changes his threads to indicate otherwise or you test it, you have to assume you can't call emergency numbers. I went exactly that route - Vibrant to G2x.
Now, I'm only on the stock G2x ROM. But I'm on the audio-fixed 2.3.4 ROM (as I just got the phone yesterday, only paid $160 on eBay and it is in totally great shape). Solid as a rock and what appears to be good battery life. I used the GPS for around a 90 minutes of turn-by-turn directions and it never gave out on me.
The Vibrant was my first high-end smart phone. The G2x is my second, and it's pretty great. So it's not getting CM9 or any other ICS? Not a big deal to me; the Vibrant effectively didn't run ICS well enough for me, at least not yet. The battery life is awful on any Cyanogenmod (compared to stock) and GIngerbread on the G2x is nice nice nice. And fast.
That said, if you can swing the cash for a nicer phone, or if you have an upgrade credit coming, look at the HTC One S. If I was on post-paid and had an upgrade credit, that's where I'd be looking. I don't have $500 to blow on a phone, though, so I went a cheaper route and got a phone with great performance and a screen that won't burn in.

It's unfortunate that, due to the recent V21Y and audio updates, the G2X just became what it should have been when it was first marketed. At least it wasn't totally abandoned by LG and T-Mobile although it is now deactivated as a phone sold by T-Moble. Don't expect ICS until/if LG makes it available for the P990/O2X(non WIND model). Even then, it will take a few iterations of development to get it working well which, hopefully, will be able to happen if there are still developers working on the G2X.
Although I am extremely angry with prejudice with LG and NVIDIA, I like the G2X and I sticking with it because it now works well and I have to keep it until my 3 year non-contract-contract WINDTab+ with WIND Mobile pays for the phone which cost $500 when I got it.
Most of the newer generation of phones are not substantial or insignificant improvements, technologically, over the G2X. If you can get decent $ for your Vibrant and pay less than the $ you got for the Vibrant for a G2X, that would be a win-win for you. Even if you wind up selling the G2X later, you won't lose much if any $ as it is probably at its lowest value until LG stops selling the Optimus 2X which has updates that can be made compatible (except for the baseband) with the G2X.
