Sound Quality on HTC Sensation - HTC Sensation

Ok. I CANNOT find a thread which talks about the DAC in Sensation. How is the sound quality through headphones on this? Any previous Nexus S /SGS owners who would like to compare the Voodoo with sensation? Does it have Wolfson DAC in it?

I read those but no one seems to confirm wolfson. If sensation has wolfson and get the voodoo project ported im getting it assuming bootloader is going to get cracked lol

Hate to break it to you but Supercurio, the creator of Voodoo sound, doesn't give a %&$# about the Sensation. He already has his hands full with the SGSII. And according to his words, not mine, he described the Wolfson Media Hub 8994 as "mediocre." He seems to think that the preamp is more important in audio quality and I happen to agree. Oh and the chance of the Sensation having the Wolfson DAC is the chance that an ice cube has in hell. Hope for a better preamp instead or OTG DAC+AMP support.

Yerr that's why I said "ported" because I remember Supercurio saying porting is possible
btw, I've been following supercurio for a long time and I cannot imagine to think that he would have thought the wolfson DAC is "mediocre" (obviously I may be wrong). If he thought so, he wouldn't have bothered with Voodoo Sound? Anyways thanks for the reply It seems time will tell everything.

Supercurio bothered to create Voodoo sound because he thought the preamp was "mind blowing" which he said in the same post as his DAC comment.
EDIT- Added Quote

Any updates on this? I would love to find out if someone made a way for us to update our sound capabilities without having to rely on CPU intensive apps such as volume plus. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I hate it, the only con for this phone. My speaker rattle when on highest.

What exactly is Voodoo audio?

I was over in the in the Development section and was reading threads and they were talking about voodoo audio not being able to inject blah blah blah something like that. so me question is. what exactly is voodoo audio and why do we need it?

OMG what a noob question LOL JK.
Its awesome it makes your headphones louder and it adjusts things that have to do with audio and recording audio.
lmao! is it just a Samsung thing? I have Motorola & HTC, and have never heard of this "Voodoo audio" but its good to know.
and is it just me or are these stock head phones the best with 5.1 sorround sound enabled?
i think i would die of they break or soemthing, how much are they?
About $10 on Amazon. I keep an extra pair on hand.

I use the Studios, and they sound awesome. Yeah it only is a Samsung thing.
the voodoo label is a "supercurio" thing. he is a dev responsible for the ext4 lagfix and for sound and color improvments. the voodoo sound project is really his baby though. basically the original line of sgs phones the charge and the infuse all have a very good audio chip from wolfson. voodoo sound replaces the samsung driver with a driver that supercurio built wolfson sources. it also has an app that has audio controls and forces a higher digital volume and allows you to adjust the analog gain to reduce hiss and noise and increase overall fidelity.
it is not for all samsungs, just some sgs phones and a few other models, it will eventually come to the infuse. he also is working on a version for the lg transformer that has a wolfson headphone amp (different model) but the headroom is less and it is not as sophisticated as one samsung has. and also in the defence of the transformer supercurio said the code was much cleaner. i would assume the transformer has good audio out of the box and wont see a big improvement like you may see on the samsung.
On top if what dani said voodoo sound also had support for recording profiles allowing you to record loud things with less distortion.

Voodoo lagfix is what we have been working on in the dev section, not voodoo audio.

[Q] voodoo question

I saw a video on youtube (well a couple actually. one of which is here.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6X6Ky7zEj4
It says in the description that the first bit of audio is from a nexus s and the other part is a galaxy s with voodoo. (and the voodoo sounds phenomenal in comparison)
does our voodoo do the same thing? can such great audio recording be achieved with the nexus s or only the galaxy s?
and I was reading the other voodoo threads and I only read about the audio from the output, not exactly the input. Or am I wrong.
I just want to know because I just ordered my nexus s and looking for cool things to do with it besides root and roms

Voodoo should be the same on galaxy S and nexus S (almost the same hardware though some nexus s have slcd screens) Yes it would improve the wuality.
Hope this helpps!

Beats by DRE or what else I found on the portal

Well I am in the mood/ a mission to just royally mess up my phone today and luckily the portal is chock full of suggestions and mods to help me do just that.
The first I found was the GPS fix from earlier and now:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523760
Beats by DRE for all Gingerbread roms.
I went through it a bit and it didnt seem like it was gonna mess with anything (mostly different files) so I went ahead and flashed it.
Everything is working fine and there doesnt seem to be any conflicts with Voodoo Sound. Does it improve the audio? I guess I am not enough of an audiofile to really know...
Just wanted to say that it seems safe to flash and throw it out as an option
Just to help people understand what Beats is (from what I know). It is more or less an audio filter that changes how the audio is processed coming from the device. It also changes the EQ curve some to accentuate the lower frequencies and then gives you a "distorted" output.
How can you tell if it installed correctly? is there any settings? Thanks.
As far as I can tell there no settings, and they are just under the hood enhancements.

it may have to do with the quality of the audio card in the charge. I felt like i noticed more of a difference when I flashed this on my kindle fire than I did on my charge.

That was my whole point... A device that renders sound exceptionally well is going to benefit less from minor software tweaks than one with a ****ty card that plays poorly out of the box.
Just because someone says "build quality" doesn't mean that they mean "bad build quality".
I think Beats sounds like crap anyway. It overemphasizes the bass and muddies up the mids. It's really intended for bass heavy music and doesn't really work well for anything else, IMO.
Beats... Audiophiles? Thanks for making me laugh this morning.

Voodoo sound is coming to Galaxy R I9103

Well dear all, I am happy to announce that our devices COULD be supported in the future, so that you guys won't feel that we are left by Samsung devs.
Currently supercurio is working on a new driver (4.0 pre 2) that has some new features and even don't require you to use download mode to flash it (since it is not a patch on the kernel src code) ..... you just need to root the phone to use it. However there is an important note : We are NOT sure whether it will definitely work nor guaranteeing it must work (but it seems like there is a high chance that it will work since our board is similar to the one used in the Galaxy tab 10.1). I will continue to work with supercurio before making further announcement.
btw, as I am just the one who has given out a device for testing. If you like the idea of voodoo sound, please says thank you or donate to supercurio instead. However as the patch is not even out yet, supercurio says that NO donation should be made until the patch is out for I9103. In addition, I will work on providing some additional IO scheduler in the kernel as well as a overclocked kernel if I have some extra time for them.
btw, as told by supercurio, the new driver will be called KAudio.
P.S. Don't pm me for the ETA as the patch is not written by me, but by supercurio. I have no way to use it until the driver is released, @ least that is what I have been told.
Awesome News Man!! This news is enough to make us Happy!
Glad that another Dev is working
thanx buddy...
Looking forward to it.

Believe me, it is a huge improvement in the sgs i9000. I have one and listen to it everyday. Music is bubbling, has body, and a great definition even with the stock headphones (take care with this, the headphones of the i9103 look identical, but it has a different impedance and quality is not the same). The GR i9103 with Voodoo Sound and good headphones will be a very serious mp3 player far superior to the sgs2 (speaking about music).
Waiting and hoping

hi,
sorry if I ask a dumb question but I could not find an answer: is woodoo sound noticable even I use a bt headset (I have an mw600), or just if I connect my earphones directly to the phone? Does it make any difference through bt?
I am planning to buy a sgs2 or sgr, but as I know sgs2 has a poor audio performance, and sgr has a wolfson dac... Woodoo sound is coming so I would choose the sgr...but I would like to know how it is works with a bt headset
Thanks in advance!

no, bluetooth output dont have any relation with wolfstone chip so if u enable voodoo sound on ur device there will be no effect in bt output, but u can use third party eq apps or dsp manager to tune values.
thank you the fast reply

Any updates on the Voodoo sound enhancements ?
You had informed us that the new driver will be called KAudio, any updates on that ?

I was talking about the bolded part.
Don't know where has UnknownzD gone after making some good progress on the kernel & voodoo sound front.
@UnknownzD where are you man ?
Sorry I was busy for exams. The new Kaudio driver will be a propriety driver that developed by supercurio solely, so I have no way to know what is the development progress atm. It will be developed as a kernel module which means rom developer can use it as well.

Nice to hear that your exams are over.
Kindly followup with supercurio on the progress of KAudio port for Galaxy R as you were the only owner who gave Galaxy R for testing to him.
Nowadays, with this level of sound, i'm not missing the sound of my old Nokia 5800XM anymore
Thanks, thanks, thanks and thanks

Headphone Amp Software

I love the Voodoo headphone amp as it boosts the headphone output to a decent level, but installing voodoo sounds has its problems on ICS with calls, etc and all the know bugs. Is there a headphone amp app or widget or something? Best I've found is to make a preset EQ with everything boosted but this affects sound more than Supercurio's work on the Wolfman chip and enabling the headphone boosts.
Jetaudio is the player I've been using on my other phone. Get it from play store. Once you have it go to EQ and look at the top. There is a built in preamp. Slide the bar to 10 and watch your ears bleed. It is by far the best free player that I've used.

Actually thank eollie. I'm pretty sure he's the one that let me know about it. Well it was either him or Lumin. Hard to tell the other members of TFTN apart anymore. lol
I'll give Jet a try myself.
Not to hijack, if anyone knows of dev info on compiling new codecs for Android, would you PM me? The lack of Apple lossless keeps me from using my phone for music.
Posted from my SGS4G, thanks to Team Acid development

Can you really tell the difference between lossless and compressed? I've tried with some really good earbuds and it's super hard for me to tell. Try talking some albums that you know really well and converting them to mp3 at 224. If you can tell the difference from the phone I'd be amazed.

Yeah, I use Grado cans and anything below 512 kbps is like nails on a chalkboard to me. My library is all Apple lossless at this point and transcoding on the fly is a complexity I'd rather not deal with.
Edit -- Switching to IEMs has made anything compressed even at 512 kbps rather painful. As full-rate Apple Lossless or Flac is typically around 800-1000 kbps, at least for me, there isn't any meaningful gain for the pain.
jetAudio does support Apple Lossless now, and doesn't have the gaps between tracks that used to plague older Android players. It's got it's own usability issues, but it does a decent job.
Now if I can figure out why Voodoo Sound occasionally stops working for me to control amp gain so I can keep the digital gain maxed out.

Since I stopped using my 4g as a phone and just use it as a music player voodoo sounds has worked all the time every time. I think receiving phone calls might be what is causing it to stop working. I few others have reported the same. Something to take a look at at least. If your using jet it has it's own built in pre amp that works well.
I think that maxed out issue you are talking about is a setting in voodoo app causes the db keep going up

I seem to be finding that either placing or receiving a call "disconnects" Voodoo Sound from the analog gain.
The preamp control in jetAudio is a little different -- Voodoo has the benefit of keeping the digital gain as high as possible and just using the audio gain, which should improve sound quality by keeping digitization noise lower.
I have logs for that i go on wheresmycellphone.com and call my phone run logocat right before the call. No one has provided logs yet ? There seems to be dual speaker mode thats changed and an audio route problem. Do u want me to up logs. Does voodoo work on any of ics roms with just dsp manager and how do u tell if it is working really. I think the tv out driver plays a slight role as well there is bluetooth sharing enabled during call when headset not being used or anything.
