I am looking for a file encryption app that is dropbox and multi-platform compatible. I currently use a truecrypt container stored in dropbox for sensitive files that I need under both windows and Linux. Unfortunately, truecrypt doesn't exist for android. So I'm looking for alternatives.
thoughts?

I'm in the same situation. Been hoping truecrypt would come out as an app, but no luck yet. I've been looking at RR File Locker. Looks pretty good and has some good reviews.

I have connections with people in investigation / forensics work, and if you have a decent lengthed truecrypt key then they aren't getting anywhere near your files. Honestly, I would stick with it as it's a proven application and provides top notch encryption.
wuala?
Maybe not answering your question exactly but you guys may want to check out Wuala. It works similar to dropbox (but has even more features) and securely encrypts your data before it leaves your machine (unlike dropbox). And of course, there is an android app.

Hey thanks sharkynolike. I was looking for something like DropBox but due to their security model I was not impressed. DropBox can (if they need to. i.e. warrant, etc) access your files. Wuala encrypts before the file is sent. No one but you has the password.
I did not know about Wuala. Just got storage space there. It is going to make a great backup location and the crypto sells it.

pgp?
Have you Considered pgp? Agp on my android and gnupgp on my pc combined with dropbox works for me...

This is exactly the reason I recently switched from Dropbox. So far, I am really enjoying Wuala as it does everything dropbox could, plus more. I also like the fact that you can gain additional free storage by trading local storage. Anyway, glad you found it useful.

Hi is there some app that can remember codes and passwords for credit cards etc. So that I can have a single password for the software and then I will be able to simply store and access the key codes in there.
I use eWallet: http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/ew/ewallet.php
It uses government-level (FIPS) 256-bit AES encryption. It also comes with desktop version that syncs with the mobile version.
I use SPB Wallet. It has a desktop app too. 256-bit encryption and backup. I keep all my credit cards, bank accts, software reg numbers, passwords, etc in it. The one app I cannot live without.
Those programs looks advanced.. There's many more features than I'll ever need and the price is a bit too high, compared that i don't have a million codes to store So is there some program that is a bit more simple? All i need is the ability to write a name (Visa, MasterCard, etc.) and then just a code i don't need any other fancy stuff, such a pc synchronization etc.

Maybe roboform mobile; even better if you have roboform on your desktop pc
I've used Roboform, eWallet and SPB. All are good but all are as simple or complicated as you need them. Never ran across anything simpler. Before these I just used an Excel spreadsheet for the passwords I needed. No encryption on it. I have never tried to encrypt a spreadsheet on my phone but if you might just try that and see how it works.
Another vote for eWallet, I updated to Version 7 last night which is even better suited to the Touch Screen of the HD2. It's very secure too. It automatically syncs to my desktop thus everything is always backed-up.
I wouldn't use a spreadsheet for sensitive information even on an encrypted card.
I use HandySafe. It has a desktop app too.
Very easy to use !
Look at keepass.info

I second that!

Hi, there!
Like many others, I have only recently switched from WM6.5 to Android (with my new HTC Desire).
WM 6 introduced the possibility to encrypt the SD Card, making it only readable in the PPC it was originally encrypted in. I found this a very helpful tool and had bought a respective app from Spritesoft. Unfortunately, their Android software is still in the beginning status, and therefore, I bought yesterday the app from WaveSecure.
I was surprised, however, that they do not offer an encryption for the SD card as I know it from my old TyTN II.
Is anybody here who can advice - tweak, app, or whatever?
I mean, it's nice to secure the phone - but the sensible data are being stored in files on the SD card in the end. And if you lose your device, it may well be broke, but the SD card lives and cannot be wyped in a broken device either.
I couldn't agree more. There are a few applications that either offer individual file passwords, which is not very secure, or just offer encryption of its own text files, like OI Safe. I used to use a commercial application on Windows Mobile, Sentry 2020, which allowed you to create a an encrypted volume within your storage, internal or external. This was ideal, as it allowed you to store any kind of files in this. After a timeout period, the volume was automatically closed and your files were secure. It is a shame that the last activity in Sentry's website is in 2007.
I should be receiving a desire very shortly and am very concerned by the current lack of device level encryption.
Does anyone know if there are any products in development that will soon allow device encryption?
Is the hardware and OS itself capable of supporting full device encryption?
hi, i want to reopen this issue because today i asked myself the same question.
i have tested several apps but most of them are not useable for a large number of files or folders.... what we really need is a secret partition and something like truecrypt.... i didn´t find anything in the net... so if somebody has an idea or solution for that, i would be happy...
thank you!

Do you speak about apps?
If yes, there is nothing out there
I know that is working fast with a big number of files. There must be an option to encrypt a whole partition,
That's the only thing that would make sense.

With the ability to put apps on the SDCard this is going to be an unlikely feature to work well....
Your best bet is looking for something with a good remote wipe/lock feature.
If you have a partition formatted with ext2/3/4, it's only a matter of copying over static binaries of lvm, device-mapper and cryptsetup, and creating a script called via initrc or controlled via /etc/init.d
I've posted about a similar solution for /data. Search for it.
Push for implementating it in Android:

I have considered getting one of those online services ie like RapidShare etc and has considered signing up for one, but which one is "ultimately" best?. I know claiming which one is best might be a bit sketchy.
But I would prefer a place where I can basically decide to make folders either accessible to all so they are public so that people can access the folders through a webinderface and download from it. Or that people need to put in a password/key to get aceces. Or ultimately that I am the only one who can access them.
As well as allowing "some" people to upload stuff to the public folder etc.
But can any of these online services handle that?
O I think it can "handle it"...

I believe Box.net covers most of your specs....
Personal account is free and stores up to 50g.
Dropbox does pretty much everything you're looking for. Other people can upload to a folder, but you have to share it with them. A shared folder takes away from their amount of storage as if it were their own.
If you exceed 10 gigs of external traffic in a single day, Dropbox suspends the specific file(s)/folder responsible for the excessive traffic for a few days... at least for the first offense, not sure about after. I learned this the hard way.
Dropbox also only gives you a couple of gigs of storage. It's by far the nicest file-sharing client, but very limiting. I use Dropbox to share small files - recoveries, individual images, tutorials, etc. For most of my personal storage and larger files that I need to share, I use crappy file sharing sites like Megaupload etc.
The great thing about Dropbox is that you don't have to link people to some spammy site where you have to wait however long for slow downloads. Click the link and you're prompted to download.
However, if you plan on sharing large files or need a ton of storage, I'd go with something else unless you're willing to pay.

[SOLVED] "Photo Settings" app by infinity8 trapped my photos, any way to save them?
I have this app called "Photo Settings" store some of my photos. All of them are 8MP photos 3264x2448.
http://www.windowsphone.com/en-US/apps/e88ce04d-ff1e-490c-86b8-66beab519c46
Viewing the thumbnails of the photos in the album work fine. But when clicking it to view the whole picture, and more importantly, giving me access to the export button, crashes the app.
It does not crash when the photo is smaller in size.
Is there any way to get my photos back other than waiting for an update of the app?
My device is an HTC Titan which cannot be interop unlocked right now to get filesystem access, and from what I know, even if interop unlocked, the isolated storage of the app is encrypted, right?
Are the photos not syncing with Zune?
Ah apologies, the images are stored in the app's file storage not in your media library. Then no. The app's file storage is isolated. So you'll have to wait for the dev to update the app.
Casey
Yes, you can do it easy. You will need any ISF access desktop app (search forum). Or you may use standard MS app called ISETool.exe (located at %ProgramFiles\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.1\Tools\IsolatedStorageExplorerTool), it came with WP7 SDK.
Command line should be: ISETool.exe ts de e88ce04d-ff1e-490c-86b8-66beab519c46 [C:\Users\YourName\Pictures]
ts = take snapshot (i.e. download all ISF content for the app to desktop)
de = device
e88ce04d-ff1e-490c-86b8-66beab519c46 = "Photo Settings" app GUID
[C:\Users\YourName\Pictures] = you should specify snapshot location here
@sensboston: ISEtool and its ilk can only be used on sideloaded apps. Given that the OP gave a link to the marketplace, I'm guessing he didn't sideload this app.
@OP: Isolated storage is not automatically encrypted (though the app developer can choose to encrypt files before putting them there, which this dev *might* have chosen to do). However, accessing the filesystem does typically require interop-unlock, so that's probably not going to help in your case.
It's a pity, I didn't know that BTW, on interop-unlocked Focus I still can access any ISF using WP7 Root Tools.
P.S. @GoodDayToDie, what if I sideload any dummy app with the same guid? Have you tried that trick?
UPDATE: tried, doesn't work (as an update; reinstall is working but deletes old ISF)
Agh... yeah, I should have mentioned, do *not* try that! If you do so, the default beahvior is re-install (wipes the IsoStore). If you try to force an update instead of a reinstall, the phone won't permit it (if you're replacing a Marketplace app with a sideloaded one). Somebody at MS already thought of that trick. :-/
Don't worry, I've experimented with useless app, of course
Summarizing: he-he, here is another reason to sideload apps instead using marketplace
P.S. It's definitely app author's fault. WP7 data API's are such limited but Pictures is the one of most opened and well known. Nothing prevented the author to save captured images in the MediaLibrary...

Well, the point of the app is to hide pictures from the Pictures library...
I should have tested it more thoroughly before putting secret yet important photos inside
Have you tried to contact the author? Most smart app authors include contact info somewhere in the app, usually in an "About" section. Lacking that, you can always use the review as a place to leave feedback, though it's hard for the dev to respond.

It seems like a best advise in this topic. Contact author and ask about adding option to save pictures to SkyDrive or media library.

Yes there's an email to author link in the app, I emailed the author a few days ago, but got no reply.
I found what seems to be the author's personal email address by checking the author's domain information and emailed there too, still got no reply.
Does WP7 itself encrypt the NAND? When Riffbox supports the Titan, I can make a full NAND dump of the device through JTAG, are there any tools available to extract files from such dumps?

I don't know 100%, but may guess - it shoud be encrypted, same way as sd-card.
At this time, WP7 does not (claim to) support full device encryption. It's possible that it does so anyhow, of course.
It does lock the SD card, which means another device can't even see the data on the card, but JTAG might get around that.
One-star reviews + emails to the author explaining thr problem and the reason for the one-star review seems like the best bet for now. Lame, I know.
The author finally responded, he will be fixing the problems
So, as of Android 12, rightfully so: https://developer.android.com/about/versions/12/backup-restore
For apps running on and targeting Android 12 and higher:
Specifying android:allowBackup="false" does disable backups to Google Drive, but doesn’t disable D2D transfers for the app.
Specifying include and exclude rules with the XML configuration mechanism no longer affects D2D transfers, though it still affects Google Drive backups. To specify rules for D2D transfers, you must use the new configuration covered in the next section.
So, is there a way to use adb or something else to access this functionality so that we can make PC backups of app data?
This is the 1 Achilles Heel of Android: you can't make backups of all app data.
I want to make an Android app or PC app that makes use of this D2D app-data transfer functionality so that users can backup their app-data with ease and peace-of-mind.
Read this review of the companion app for this feature that Google has for Pixels.
At least I think this is the app for that and it doesn't look too good:
Data Transfer Tool - Apps on Google Play
Restore apps and more from an old phone
play.google.com
That being said, this might be just that one app and other OEMs might simply elect to not have these restrictions, but it's something I had been wondering myself for a while when I read that Google chooses to replace adb backup with a function that's curiously not called a backup anymore, but a transfer tool.
It's not that uncommon for stipulations like these to be the difference between a backup and a transfer.
Definitely something to look out for.
Not allowing easy and complete app-data back-ups is user-hostile.
iOS isn't perfect but much better about this because it allows complete backups via iTunes or Finder.
And, I think this Data Transfer Tool app is either Pixel-only or that OEMs implement it or include it themselves directly.
I agree, it is very hostile and I'm honestly puzzled why backups that are transferable within various Android flavors at least for third-party apps aren't legally required of Google by now.
The EU is going ahead to mandate that all charging ports on mobiles should have the same standard when there are already only 2, but this **** is allowed to fly?
Absolutely ridiculous and out of touch.
Too bad I care about long-term support in terms of security patches and features like a usable pen (S-Pen), otherwise I'd be on some Xiaomi phone where apparently complete backups are a reality.

Does Xiaomi beat Smart Switch and grab the app-data of apps that don't have that backup boolean set to true?
Smart Switch grabs the app-data of all apps that have that backup boolean set to True. And, you can backup to an external HDD via a USB-C hub also. This beats Google hands down.
iOS has been doing this since forever. I don't understand the delay in implementing this very basic feature. No apps should be allowed to bypass this requirement.

Unless you can grab the app-data as a restorable package, the way adb does, this won't make life easier.

From what I've read yes.
Xiaomi being a Chinese company I guess they just don't give much of a toss about what those app devs think should be happening to the app data, which in this instance is a good thing for the user, however I don't really trust my valuable data to Xiaomi in general, so I'd rather steer clear of that company.
I just cannot trust them. It's got nothing to do with them being Chinese, but them being at the direct whim of the CCP.
Actually same for Huawei where I have to admit to still own a MediaPad 8.4 for manga reading, but I'm really picky about what I put on there and am actively looking for a replacement. Something with 8 inches (perfect manga reading screen size) and somewhat decent specs and build quality that comes with Android and ample security patch timeline.
Basically I'm waiting for something like a Galaxy Tab S7 in 8 inches. Yeah, that'd be pretty fly. No A-line please, I'd really like an S-Pen on it, especially since I'm not too certain I want to go with a foldable phone after my Note20, but I for sure want to keep using an S-Pen...

Rumor is: If a Xiaomi phone hears you say the word "Tibet" more than 3 times, it will explode.
