[Q] Battery cannot fully charged - stock - unrooted - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Something is strange with my stock unrooted 2.3.4 nexus s.
phone is less than a month old and it can never fully charge the battery.
i left it overnight to charge and when i woke up it just get up to 95% and still charging.
it used to show fully charged.
Is something wrong with the phone or battery?
Mine is apparently is the i9023 version.

this is a feature of the nexus s and gingerbread. also, the battery is rated at 1500mah while the phone is listed at 1440mah, fwiw

thanks for that.
so you're saying that this is normal?
how come i could get "FULLY CHARGED" before? and now it won't?
Strange

It's normal. I believe it's a feature of the charging circuit - it protects the battery. I've been getting to about 96 or 97% when it says "Fully charged" on the lock screen.

Hmmm, I'm not sure about that.

When I ran stock I definitely got the "Fully Charged" message.
I can't remember see it now I am running a Custom ROM.

yes, i used to get it when i first got the phone.
now i don't.
I just left it charged the whole night last night (more than 8hrs), and in the morning, i just got up to 95% and still charging....

Try unplugging and then plugging in the charger when you wake up and leave it for a few more minutes (I'm not talking about "bump charging" where you plug and unplug the charger numerous times in rapid succession) and see if that gets you the "fully charged" message. I'm no expert but as I understand it, once the phone reaches "full" in the middle of the night it shuts off charging. Then the phone will just slowly discharge until a certain point (it used to be 89% on my N1) and then and ONLY then will the phone begin to charge again. I notice that if I've had the phone plugged in over night (mine is usually off) and I unplug and plug it in, again for five or maybe ten more minutes I get "fully charged" when I turn on the phone. Just my experience.
Sent from my NS running NSCollab cuz I lost my tin cans and string....

Were you able to get this resolved?
I have tried to research this and haven't come up with anything.
Me and my wife both have the NS on ATT (Best Buy free day).
I have read the multiple responses regarding not charging to 100%, which I am fine with. However, I have no problems getting a "charged" status on my phone, while she never gets this status.
I have swapped batteries, updated both of our phones to 2.3.6 (manual, neither of us were OTA'd), switched charging via USB and wall and still her phone has this issue.
It also seems I get better battery life then her, but we have different usage habits, apps installed, etc., and neither of us have a problem getting through the day.
Anybody have any input about resolving getting the "charged" status? Nothing big, but it is bugging the heck out of her, and ultimately me.

No "Charged" Status Solved by Rooting
I went ahead and rooted her phone and now I am getting charged status.

I also have a nexus s. It will always charge up to 95%, if I keep unplugging it and plugging it in, it will get to either 96 or 97%, but i've never seen it higher.
I cant even remember the last time it said 'device is charged'...easily 2months +.

Yeah that is the same issue I was having. A manual update of the software (to 2.3.6) did not resolve the issue. Unlocking the bootloader and rooting the phone forced a wipe, and it is now getting the "charged" status. The battery does only show 95% when it reaches the "charged" status, as has been discussed by many others.
I haven't really noticed any significant difference in battery life since rooting. I am still running the stock 2.3.6, and the only app I have installed outside of the market is the wifi-tether.
There were a few other little quirks with the phone that seem to be gone now as well. I used to get a very occasional app or phone crash and sometimes a reboot into the fastboot screen. All gone since root, so far.
I think this phone wants to be rooted.

Battery question i9000

Think i have made a pigs ear of my new i9000, well its new to me, only a week old
when i got it i could charge to 100% fairly fast and then when id unplug my charger it would hold at 100% for a fair bit, certainly if the screen was off it would be their for maybe 1hr with push email, but then when i updated to the new 2.2.1 froyo i read to wipe batterystats, so i did and now my phone charges to 98% (by the way when at 98% its showing around 4.28V ,it used to show that at 100%) without a problem but it had to be left on charge ALL night, yes over 10hrs to get to 100% from about 40% and as soon as i unplug the charger it drops to either 99% or this morning it dropped straight away in a blink of an eye to 98%
whats the best thing to do, i really dont want to wipe batterystats again since i have to drain the battery fully and i have done that about 3-4 time since having it, since i was trying new ROMs
is it possible that if i leave it then maybe by magic it could sort itself out, i mean this morning my battery pro app i have installed was showing 98% but an other battery reading in the phone showed 100%, i have no idea how thats possible!!
*update*
guess I answered my own question, just charged it to 100% and unplugged it at 4.238v and straight away immediately after i unplugged it it went to 97% 4.191v so its getting worse.
am I getting no help because no one can help or have i posted in the wrong section??
any help would be fantastic
thank you
same problem with me
If you search around for battery drain threads, you'll find that this 100->98,97 phenomenon was specifically coded in for 2.2.1, ie: intentional. It supposedly makes your battery last longer or something by preventing overcharging, or something along those lines..

Thanks for clearing that up, yeah that makes sense that it will help the battery, it was not a huge deal just i wanted to know if i had messed it up but from what you said all is good
although the strangest thing this morning just before i read your post i unplugged my phone and it stayed ay 100% for about 4 mins which for me is rather good since i only get about 4hrs on screen time, but thats enough for me, i get easily 30+hrs with push emails
used to get half that on my HD2

[Q] Odd battery life situation

I've always been reasonably happy with my battery life. If I use it heavily it goes down. If I don't it can stay charged for a couple of days. Within the last week or so that has dramatically changed. All of a sudden it barely makes it through the night from a full charge to 10% or so. It also "seems" that normal use drains it at least twice as fast. Anecdotal but I know something is wrong or different.
I haven't made any changes to my phone for months. I'm running existz kernal for 2.2 and that is the only customization. I did get a bunch of app updates but that always happens. The battery use screen shows the batter is being used for display but over night, it doesn't/shouldn't display much.
Thoughts on how to find what the heck is going on would be appreciated.

What I would do if I were you is charge to 100%, recalibrate, and take the battery out for about 15 minutes before you put it back in and turn your phone on. I dunno.why this procedure worked for me but that's just a suggestion if you don't wanna flash to stock and back to whatever you're using.
Uninstall updates, then add them back, one at a time.

I notice dramatically different battery life when I use this procedure to charge my phone known as a bump charge.
1) charge to 100% or as close as your phone will get while it is on.
2) Disconnect charger
3)Turn off phone
4)Re-Connect charger while phone is off
5) Wait until the phone says 100% charged while it is off. You can check the charge by using the volume buttons if the screen is asleep.
6) Unplug charger. (This is important. If you boot your phone with your charger plugged in it can give you inaccurate battery information.)
7) Boot up the phone.
That is really odd but mine has started doing the exact same thing. I have never had battery issues and for the first time today my phone was completely dead within 6 hours, and the past week it seems to hardly make it 12 hours.
I was just assuming it was the launcher I was using but I removed it and it never helped whatsoever.

I'll give that a try... it made it through last night in pretty good shape though. Confused I am.
Not sure if this helps or not, but here is my experience.
I have two wireless routers in my house. One I keep locked to N-only and the other to G-Only. The N router I have suspected for some time has a weak or flaky radio because I can watch the signal strength fluctuate wildly over a period of 10 seconds or so. I noticed a while back that when my phone is connected to the N router it will kill itself pretty much overnight. When I disable that connection and let it connect to the G router it only loses a couple % over an 8 hour period.
I don't know if it is due to being connected to N, or if my suspected flaky router is causing it to use more power staying locked onto the signal or something of that sort.

[Q] Charging Paused can't do anything

Hey guys...yes this is my first post. I've been searching for about 12 hours and reached my wit's end so I ask for your help
I've got an S2 Skyrocket running unrooted 4.0.4. It's run fine for almost a month with no problem other than terrible battery life.
Starting yesterday, with 2 different batteries and 3 different chargers, i get an error telling me "Charging paused. Battery temperature too hot". Its not even warm and it will not charge. Now both of my batteries are dead and I cant get the device to even go into download mode or anything.
I had a 100% charge on the phone yesterday and turned it off. When i turned it back on (or tried to) it was totally dead.
i'm on the verge of smashing this thing into the ground. Please help!

Thank you so much for the quick reply. Almost rhetorically I'm assuming there's no way to externally charge the battery without an external charger. Correct?

I would ignore it, except that my phone doesn't charge. And it pops up every 60 seconds or so if I click ok and try to get out of it.
**Update - I've borrowed a battery from a friend with a Nexus. Device powers up, was able to revert back to stock 2.3.5 but still same issue with all 3 batteries and different chargers...Charging paused due to battery being to hot or too cold. Trading in for a new Skyrocket at ATT service center tonight under warranty....

[Q] Restarting the phone gives MORE Battery?!

Yes, this is exactly what I get lots of time. Today, I had been charging my phone for around 3 hours starting from 14% battery. Till now it had reached around 55 % when I had to remove the charger and I put my phone somewhere. Then after some minutes I connected my phone to the PC to charge via PC now, as the charger was unavailable to me for the moment. I found that the phone had been turned off automatically. OK, so I turned it on but I saw that the battery is 100% !!
Similar thing happened yesterday when I was charging phone and decided to restart mobile thinking of getting more RAM, for it had not been restarted since a while. I restarted at 20% battery and turned it on to find that it was above 50% !
Why is it happening? Does my battery get charged quickly but phone does not tell me or is my battery behaving funny? (actually, not funny at all)
My brother's HTC Amaze charges from zero to 100% in around 2.5 hrs and other brother's Xperia Arc also charges from zero to 100% in around 2 hrs.
But my Sensation normally takes 5-6 hours.
This is a known "issue" and is due to (closed source) htc drivers. Those jumps are rather large though, could also be due to bad battery calibration; something to be expected just after flashing a rom.

I have never flashed or rooted.. didn't they give a solution?
Actually it happens even if you're completely stock. It's a known issue in everyone sensation, i think. I also think It won't give you more juice as percentage will reduce faster to where it should be.

That's what I experienced yesterday.. it dropped down real fast.
As mentioned above, it may also be a calibration issue. I am saying this because I sometimes charge with charger and sometimes with PC (USB charging Mode), and even sometimes switch between these while going from 0-100%.
I think it doesn't matter how you charge or deal with your phone. I don't think that battery calibration will solve it. If you reboot it'll increase your battery percentage, even if you don't use a charger.
it is a common htc issue with battery percentage
it happens with my device too
while charging if i do a reboot it jumps to a higher percentage

[Bug] Charging phone while using results in shutdown with red led

Not sure if this is related to 4.4 or the nexus 5 specifically (pretty sure its the hardware). While using the phone during charging it doesn't charge fast enough to keep powered on. My wife was on facebook when hers went down, and I was playing knights of pen and paper when mine went down. The phone will eventually just power off and flash the red led 8 times. The only way to power it back on is to load the bootloader first (vol up + vol down + power) then press the power on start. I tested this on 2 black 32GB Nexus 5s with android 4.4.
This is really easy to test, next time your device is low keep using it after plugging it in. It will eventually just "go dark" and you'll be greeted by the flashing red led.
Here is a link to the google group product forum thread I created, please post feedback. This needs to get fixed, hopefully just an update can resolve it.

Yikes. This isn't good. The only time the phone may not be able to keep up with charge is when using GPS. If this is a widespread issue I'm sure it will be fixed. Unless you have a bad battery or charger! I will test..
Update:
Just played game Aurolux whilst charging for 10 minutes and phone gained 5%.

I tested it on both mine and my wifes phones, different chargers as well. Also the load on the devices was low, both were on wifi, she was using the facebook app, I was playing knights of pen and paper, both on auto brightness (in our living room, lights off). Same thing happened on both, screen just cuts out, red light starts flashing.
Hopefully it gets fixed, if more people will test it and post feedback here or at googles forum it would be great.

Same here. Zero issues playing games and phone charges.
Are you using a custom ROM or kernel? That could explain it. Otherwise you either have two did chargers, or 2 did batteries, or a combination of both.

I guess I could try to charge when it's below 10%, but maybe easier is if you try charging whilst using your phone above say 20%. If you still have the issue then I think it's device related, if not report back.

I'm gonna give that a shot tomorrow. Its getting late and need to get up for work in a couple hours. They seem to charge just fine when left alone. It just seems too coincidental that both phones would have the exact same power issue.

dont forget, the snapdragon has 'quick charge 2.0', you shouldn't be seeing that kind of charging issues. i mean, if it's something you're ok living with. but that sounds like a big indicator that the battery or charging module is faulty/will go bad soon

No I'm already getting mine replaced for dead pixels but to have 2 phones experience the same issue like this is weird. Need more people to test the phones under 10%, I know they charge fast but there could be a reason why behind this like I listed above.

could it possibly be the cable, or the charger unit, or even the wall socket? these are all things that should be tested
I just wanted to say that I had the same issue as you and the problem so far seems to happen when you let the battery get pretty low before plugging it in.
The battery was down to about 8% when I plugged the phone in last night (to the lg charger). I actually left mine alone for about 30 minutes and when I came back, it was at 6%. I did verify that the display said "Charging" when the cable was plugged in. I unplugged the phone, and plugged it back in and started browsing the web on wifi and within another 15 minutes the battery had gone down to 2%. I turned off the screen and left it alone and when I checked it again, it was at 1%. At that point, I was worried about the phone, so I urned off the phone completely. When I turned it back on, it did look like it was charging again, but very slowly. At this point, I tried plugging it into another charger that I had, and it charged up fairly quickly.
Definitely pretty frustrating as I've never had something like this happen unless you have the usb cable plugged into a computer.
Last night I went to plug my phone into the lg charger...I could hear the charger buzzing slightly....I plugged in the phone and thought nothing of it really... Looked at my phone on the way to work and it wasn't charged past 28%.... plugged it into another charger at my desk and its at 47% in a matter of minutes...
I know op said he tried different chargers, but just tossing in my lousy 2c

The only chargers I tried were the ones that came with the phones. I got a bunch of others so Im going to give them a shot as well and see how this fairs.
Ok so Im sitting here trying to recreate the issue and it is different. I brought the battery down to 4% plugged it in and kept playing kop&p and the battery hasnt gone down, it actually went up to 7% but its holding there. I am letting it get to 10% now before I pick it up and try again. I swapped out between the n5 charger and my n4 charger both held it at 7% while playing.
Maybe this just has to do with battery conditioning, or maybe the snapdragon quickcharge ic.
Just checked the phone, from the time I started writing this till now (maybe 2 minutes) its up to 10% so back at it I go.
The charger that comes with the phone is horrible. Its the same type as the n4 which dies after 2 months. Don't use it, just use another one and you'll be just fine.
