Ok, I have been flashing for a few months trying to optimize my phone. My last rom was serendipity 6.2, with sp 59 and jl2. I restored to stock (bc I wanted to try something else and hadn't done that in a few weeks) my battery life on serendipity was atrocious.. 6 hours with medium usage. (hardly any calls or messages, looking things up or reading xda briefly) . I spent today on stock, after about 20 hours of light usage I am at 60% left. Now I did flash with a full battery serendipity, wiped battery stats and cleared cache and after several charge cycles and a few days battery life was still awful. I was about to get a new battery. Now I don't mean to single out serendipity, I've had bad battery life on paragon, dilli, and a few others (this time it just got unbearably bad), but why should battery life be so bad on custom roms? Am I alone on this? I hesitate to flash again bc I'm loving having a phone that won't die if I touch it, but I miss the functionality of the device with a custom 2.2.1 on it. Advice or opinions please.

I'm having the same problem. Everybody keeps saying they've got excellent battery life and what not with custom roms but mine doesn't seem so good. Wifi is off, I've wiped battery stats, I've used the rom for several days letting everything get situated before I begin thinking about if its good battery life or not. Maybe I'm just expecting too much or I watch my battery a lil bit too much, idk it just seems pretty bad. If I stay on the internet for 20 minutes I've already dropped about 3%

The normal Batt live on this phone with normal use is between 12 to 16 hours
I'm thinking part of it may be psychological and part may be usage.
Psychological in the sense that I have an expectation of an improvement, practical in that with my stock rom I haven't reinstalled certain apps like xda and pulse where I spend a lot of time reading and thus using the screen.
That being said I was still experiencing drains of 8% or more per hour when the phone was idle, wifi and gps off.
There is a way to check the cpu's time in each state, but I can't remember where the file is. If someone can, please let me know. I'm curious if under the custom rom my phone wasn't properly scaling down.
I'll probably flash something new tomorrow morning unless I see something shiny and new in the dev forum.

So 6 hours seems a bit low then? Could it just be a cumulative effect of flashing rom on top of rom with restoring to stock?

Yeah 6 hrs does seem a bit low. There are many things that can contribute to it. If you are bouncing between H and 3g on a custom rom will drain it like crazy, I had to disable H and stick with 3g and that helped. could also look at OS monitor to find what is running in the background.
Ok, I did notice that recently I was jumping between h and 3g. I was experimenting with some of the new modems. Should I try finding a better modem for my location?

I would try others, as well as disable H in the hidden menus, and see how it fairs
@ zelendel.... so by H i assume you mean data... i see alot of back and forth when data is on. i know when data is off i'm still using wcdma from the gsm status, but it doesn't show the 3g icon.
i need my data because i'm from the states but living in australia and alot of my comunications are thru email/facebook.
when i look at battery usage i see rarely more than 5% from cell....usually 90 something from display ( i fiddle with it alot).
can't expect too much cause it's a powerhouse with a tiny battery........
for me the big Q at present is... can we top up the charge regularly or is it always best to let a full cycle run? if i knew it was fine to keep it topped i'd stay 50%+ most of the time i think................
It is not great to keep it topped off. The lithium battery will wear out faster and lose charging capacity over time. this process is sped up the more time the battery spends at a high charge

Visit the Samsung web site and read the battery specs for the Captivate. The stock battery is only rated for 5 hours and 50 minutes of active phone use (which means the display is active). In sleep mode (display and other features of the phone are shutdown) the battery is rated for up to 300 hours (12.5 days).
I have NEVER seen a stock Captivate last for over 3 days in sleep mode. As for active phone use (display is active) my experience with several of the custom ROMS (Cognition, Paragon, Andromeda, and now my favorite, Continuum) is that the battery life is either on par with the stock ROM, or exceeds it. The kernels on some of these custom ROMs are more efficient than that of the stock ROM due to the many tweaks and cleaning up of bloated apps and code by the developer.
I can't bring myself to keep a stock ROM now that I have used some excellent custom ROMs like those I name above.
As for flashing custom ROMs and seeing fast battery drain goes... I have had that experience with those I listed, but usually I was able to resolve the issue by ensuring my battery was at 100% (meaning showing that amount both on and off) and reflashing, or finding the cause of the high battery usage and going from there (e.g. I have had to reflash modems). Another thing I do, mainly out of habit from compiling code and deploying it in dev and test environments, is to make sure that I am working from a known good baseline ROM before flashing a custom ROM. In this case I always return to the stock ROM you can flash through Odin One Click. That way if you have battery problems after flashing a custom ROM you can have a good idea as to what is causing those problems. This is, of course, just a matter of personal preference. Some have repeatedly flashed one custom ROM over another with no issues. YMMV

I am the opposite, I got horrible battery on stock. Could not even make it through my work day without it dying on my way home unless I charged it midday. Now I am running Serendipity 6.2 and unplug at 7:30am and it is now 8:30pm my time and I have 30% remaining....
I have also tried other customs roms with noticeable improvements in battery life over stock but for me Serendipity gives me the best performance and battery.

i used about 50 phone call, 2 hour websurfing, email sending, checking.
i still have 41% left, 1day 10hour 50 min.
Could I have a faulty battery? I rooted and rommed cuz of my battery life being terrible but It still is bad

I had the exact same issue as you. I tried Darky's 9.3 first, then Serendipity 6.2, then Cognition 4.2.1. Each had major battery drain, meaning 6-8 hours with moderate use, and even without any usage it would drain 25% over 3 hours.
Use One-Click to flash back to stock JF6, then immediate do a Master Clear from the One-Click program after it has finished booting. Obviously move everything to an external SD or the computer prior to all of this, and make sure the external SD and SIM are out when flashing.
My battery has lasted for 14 hours today, and I'm only down to 54%. This is with about 1hr 20min screen on, ~30min voice calls, and always connected via 3G/H with background sync on, weather widget, and moderate web browsing.
Current setup: Serendipity 6.2, Speedmod K13C, JK4 Modem
Trying again
I couldnt keep myself away from custom roms, how i missed tethering, the custom theming, non marketplace apps and so much more...
Im trying Dilli's 7.1.1, bump charging at the moment...
Last night I drained my battery to 5% when i finally fell asleep... 6 hours later it was at 4%. Finally it drained and would not power on at all. Not even the backlights. Plugged it in for an hour and thought to take the sim card out so i would have a phone for the hours it would take to charge. When i plugged it back in the phone jumped from approximately 10% to 40% charged...
Oh well.
I have also been bouncing around flashing diff roms like crazy. I have to say though, I am using Continuum v4 with Hardcores speedmod Kernel K13D. I have been doing pretty good on this combo. Lasts for most the day with normal use.
I have got to say, I finally feel like I can use my phone without having to be concerned with the battery the entire time. Ever since I got this phone I have always been reserved about usage due to the battery literally draining right before my eyes. I could watch as the phone would drop 2-3% in just moments of use.
Yesterday, I had the phone unplugged and on 4G with normal use for 11 hours and still had about 30% battery. This is very acceptable and much improved. I've literally lost 27% in an hour and a half with very little to no use at all, so I am super pleased with my results. Just thought I would share.

I have been running BAMF 1.5 since it came out, with the updated radio and the stock kernel that it comes with. I am just running the leaked update, no ROM flashed over at all. It is rooted but thats about it. I have JuiceDefender - free set to the "balanced" setting. This is why I am so excited, no other types of managers or automated processes. GPS is on all the time and wifi was off during that 11 hour period.
Another comment is, it stays connected to 4G SO MUCH BETTER. It used to hang up on me all the time then drop to 3G after 10-20 seconds. Now its just 4G pretty much all the time except my house where I seem to only get 3G really, but I have wifi setup so I am not concerned.
Prior to loading the leaked radio and installing BAMF 1.5, I would leave my phone on my side table at night with around 90% battery or so and by morning it would be down to under 10%. This happened repeatedly and was with it configured to use my wifi.
Now with both installed, I wake up and find my battery no lower than 75%.
I may just have to give Juice Defender a go. I've been hearing only good things about it.

a couple of texts, facebook browsing, email checking, and a phone call, all in 4G area, I would say light use...
I can't say much for battery life as mine dropped around 18% last night and before I installed the new radio I would usually drop around 1 - 5% (with data/wifi off). But this is the first time (flashing yesterday) that I've run anything other than Virus. So, I'll give it a couple more nights to see how the battery drains after things settle in. I did notice a buttload of apps in the background this morning.
However, today at work, I've kept a solid 4g signal for the first time ever since I've had the bolt, since three days after it was available.

I agree.
7 hours of usage and I had 51%. I check my phone often for work, send texts, several dozen calls (30 seconds to 3 minutes), playing music for about 5-10 minutes, 5-10 of internet surfing. I love my phone more than before!! I can't wait for the Gingerbread release.
Think my issue is with on, off 4g because of weak signal. New radio, remix 1.5. Battery life improved but still a long way to go
I'm rooted first of all.
Well, wifi, all GPS, and bluetooth off.
my battery was okay, it lasted for a day mostly. and I think about 2 days ago, the battery suddenly getting worse. Everything remains same. I haven't changed any option, but the bettry is suddenly worse.
I don't use my phone that much. like I got a phone call yesterday and today? no texting, no internet, no app uses.
I charged my battery full(til 11am or til noon), then it dies before 5pm.
(Today I charged my phone til 9:40am, got only one single phone call lasted 1-2mins, and my battery is already 47%.)
It's just terrible! Anyone has same prob????
I'm in California BTW.

I'm rooted and I think it's stock rom.
I just followed the manual perm root process.
It's weird because under same conditions, battery got totally worse than before. It lasted at least for a day, but now, it lasts only 4-5 hrs with same amount of usage under same conditions.
ever figure this out?
Just rooting will not change anything to your battery life. You need to install a rom or a different kernel in order for it to change anything.
Mine too has gotten worse in the last week. I am not rooted. At this point my battery is draining roughly 25% per hour with little or no use. Spare parts shows the most usage on my phone is 0. I have tried getting rid of weather bug, Pandora and sirius. I tried looking for something to explain exactly why 0 takes up 10x more battery than Android system itself and I have came to the conclusion that I am lost. Any direction to the correct forum topic would be appreciated.

Have you tried the "Blockbuster" mod?
1) open the Blockbuster Application, it should ask you to update.
2) once the update has finished open the application back up and
3) navigate to Menu>Settings> "Disable Movie Updates"
Users have reported better battery life.
Thanks for the reply. Yes I have updated and disabled the Blockbuster app. Better yet even I just rebooted my phone and it drained 12% on the battery. How is that possible. I am using my stock battery now and not the extended, so the % would be different with the stock compared to my extended but really I don't think it should use 12% on a reboot.

All GPS was off, bluetooth off, Wifi off, everything off except 4G. I sent a text and received a text, and the battery drained to 46%. After a few mins with no use of the phone, the battery warning sound played. So I had to charge my phone at that point. It is just totally weird. Under same condition and same usage of the phone, the battery lasted for a day at least. (4G was on at the point.) I don't know what cause this problem. Anyways, I just unrooted mine and got a software update via OTA. I don't know if this will fix the problem. Any luck to you yet?

That's about what mine took on average to reboot. 10-12%.
I'm at 72% after 11 hours of idle usage and that's on the 2750mah extended battery. That would put me at 46% after 12 hours having not touched the phone once. I literally fell asleep as I took it off the charger...
Something is jacked up and I don't know what.
Rooted, Virus ROM B3, 1.8G kernel (forget which).
I've gone to Imoseyon's Sense lean kernel, special edition.
We'll see how that goes...?
Wanted to report back as I think the culprit may be the wireless tether app.
I turned GPS, WiFi and all my sync's back on and the phone is back to giving me decent battery life.
I did some changes with the tether app and I'll report back to see if my suspicions are correct.
Having waited months for this update, I was just as excited as many to put this update on. Unfortunately, even though it has fixed many issues it created a new one for me: battery life, surprisingly.
The battery life on my phone is now back to what it was at out of the package with all of the bloat and Froyo. All I did on my Froyo was root it, freeze all of the bloatware, and unroot it. The battery would go the entire day and then some with moderate use. The phone became very stable.
Fastforward to yesterday- the phone rebooted, so I had enough and I put Gingerbread on. Everything was fine yesterday, and battery consumption was great with all the radios on. After I woke up this morning from charging (USB), the phone felt hot. Battery Monitor was saying it was at about 101F (normally around 96F). I unplugged, and immediately the consumption was at about 250mA. Throughout the past few hours, it has gone from 150mA to 600mA consumption. I did a factory reset, and it didn't help. Nothing has worked yet to get the power consumption under control today. The primary things running are (not surprisingly) the bloat. Telenav I noticed was constantly noted as "Restarting". Appmarket gets force-killed, and it opens back up a split second later.
It might possibly be the data radio, as JuiceDefender can't even shut it off.
Has anyone found their battery consumption got worse with the GB update, and not better? Short of flashing a bloat-free rom on it, has anyone found a solution?
When an app constantly closes and goes into a endless restart cycle is what kills the battery the most. It also makes the phone hot. I had this happen with the NFL app a few updates ago.

After I updated yesterday my battery did also die fairly fast. I did a hard reset and now it seems the same as froyo. But I was one the lucky folks with almost no problems so I never rooted. From my understanding gingerbread suppost increases battery life mines about the same now

Guys you have to keep in mind that this is not the official release. LG either leaked this build out by accident or on purpose to quiet down the hungry stomach's that wanted a gingerbread build. Lets just cross our fingers and graciously hope that a more fresh and tasty build will be released.
For now just try and enjoy your phone. If you are having random reboots that are a little too often then try completely wiping your phone and then literally wait 10 minutes for the software to settle down, once settled then reboot and enjoy.

That sounds about right. There has to be a broken sensor or something improperly calibrated. It isn't warm anymore, but it is just gulping down the power right now faster than any device I've ever had. I have a feeling it may have thought it was fully charged. It was perfectly fine on the original charge left over from Froyo consuming only about 30-60mA. Overnight charge on Gingerbread? Getting this massive consumption. It was done on USB. Once it dies in the next few minutes, I'll do a full wall charge and hopefully it gets more than a few minutes.
You guys using the bloated version or the EB release with bloat removed?
My battery life has been fairly good so far.

Have you charged it since you ran the update?
I just plugged my phone in about 30 minutes ago and it went from 20% battery to 80% in 30 minutes. That seems very fast for the G2x. I really think the culprit here is it isn't charging properly. I did a factory reset already, and it didn't help.

One thing I have noticed is my Camera is apparently responsible for about 20-30% of the power consumption even though I've forced quit it and rebooted.
I am going on 14 hours now and am at 64%... light use, wifi on half the time, screen on for little over an hour. I have HORRIBLE reception at my house in ohio, the damn thing is usually just trying to hold 1 or 0 bars where i very frequently have dropped calls or text messages that go out slow or come in in packages because it finally found a signal again (aka my phone loves to spend juice looking for a signal)... I would say its pretty good and i used the hell out of it yesterday and killed it in like 6 hours so this is my second charge...
Luckily I'm in the second Category. I was on ultimate Rom and loved it but I just wanted to change it up so I rolled back to froyo. Then did the update, reflashed clockwork and charged it to 100%, booted into clockwork, deleted the battery stats, boot it up, pulled the charger and I'm on 15 hours now and still have about 20% left. I'd say they did something positive. I still need to freeze the bloat however. I'll worry about that later when we get a CM7 or EB build based on this rom that is stable.
After I turned off GPS on the camera and killed it, my battery life skyrocketed. Even though I was killing the camera, it wasn't helping. I had to actually turn off the GPS before exiting. I'm not sure if its coincidence, but I left it unplugged overnight and it used almost no battery.
Just for a bit of proof.. I took these after the update, in the one with the estimate you can see it only expected me to get 5 more hours of battery life based on the history, but it's going to last a lot longer I think.
All I did was wipe battery stats, charge to 100%, wipe again, waited 30 minutes, wiped one more time then unplugged and let it go. that was 17 hours ago.
I'm anal like that, I really did wipe the battery stats three times and let it charge to full again after wiping just to make sure it was maxed out. I'm a noob still so not sure exactly how the battery stats reporting works.
Oh yeah, this includes 1.5 hours of Order and Chaos. Streaming music from Google music for two hours while driving across town, 45 minutes of GPS while locating a business I've wanted to visit and about 5 chapters of I, Robot in google books.
Well not so random, everytime I work between 8-10pm my phone will shut down 4-5 times within a 10 minute period and drop roughly 20% in battery each time.
Now I don't remember it doing this pre-root, and it seemed to go away after fully calibrating my battery with insertcoin. But, now that I've flashed eaglesblood its back.
Anyone else have this issue or know howto fix it? Bad battery stats, or bad sd card, or should I flash back to stock unrooting and head over to tmobile after it happens?
