Different launchers & battery life ? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I'd like to know if having installed various launchers makes the phone lag or drain battery life ? I don't know which one to choose yet, so when I hit the Home button of my Nexus S, I get the choice of using all launchers that I've installed.
Would it be recommended to uninstall useless launchers ?
Also, let's say I want to use a 'light' launcher when I'm running out of battery, does running one launcher turn off widgets from my default launcher ?
Thanks for the help !

If you're not constantly switching between them, then the unused ones should be killed off and removed from memory. You should be able to select a default Launcher with a check box on that menu.

Go for it if you're running out of storage space.

The only running widgets would be from the currently running Launcher. Try Zeam Launcher for one that's simple and light weight.

If you're looking for a lightweight alternative launcher that still gets the job done without all the bells and whistles nothing more better than Zeam Launcher

I personally don't think that you will improve battery life using a lightweight launcher. Maybe it does but the difference might not be something you would notice.
What I would advice is disable widgets constantly polling for data e.g YouTube, Facebook, genie Widgets ...

Thank you all for your answers.
I enjoy having multiple widgets running even though it drains battery. But as I said, I'd like to turn them off when I'm on my way back home but unsure that my battery will last. By switching to another light launcher, according to what droptothetop said, I can make sure none of them are running.

Replacing stock launcher

Hi all,
I'm currently using LauncherPro and I was wondering if the stock launcher still runs in the background when LauncherPro is active, or if it's completely shut down.
Basically, I'm trying to find out if the stock launcher would take up any RAM/CPU when you're running a different launcher on top.
Thanks

Interesting question. I think the easiest way to get an answer to this, is simply to ask one of the creators of the home screen replacements apps. I'll try to get in touch with them and get back as soon as I can.

In the mean time, it can't hurt to remove all widgets and things from the stock launcher homescreens. This way it won't use resources.

not a bad tip
I'm pretty sure it doesn't.
Even if it does it would get killed after residing in memory long enough.
There can only be one default launcher and you'll notice if you switch between launchers, each time you do the launcher you load has to redraw everything on the home screen. Thus it's not residing in memory.
Heck, the default launchers don't stay in memory very long without some tweeks so I can say with confidence that launchers not actively running aren't gonna be taking up resources.
That's my observation as well, but I'm no expert

It's not used unless it is called, typically by another app using an intent, or it's set as your default launcher.
So, if it's not set as your default launcher the only resources it consumes is storage space EXCEPT until it is called by another app. For example, the stock launcher has a wallpaper picker intent so when you open the wallpaper picker it will "launch" that function (not the whole app) of the stock launcher because the stock launcher is registered (in androidmanifest.xml) to respond to such calls.
In reality it will sit idle for most of the time and use a tiny amount of resource if it's needed. It would be a measurable use of resources but probably not perceptible to a human.

[Q] Multiple Launchers Simultaneously!!

Hi All,
I am using following launchers currently:
1.Default
2. ADW
3. Home++
4. LauncherPro
5. NetLifeScreen
6. Windows7 Launcher
And I use Home Switcher to switch between these launchers, I can observe that my phone started lagging, is multiple launchers is the reason?
I am using task killer and cant see the other launcher running??
Also when I reduce the no. of screens to 3, there is no issues what soever!!!
Any suggestions...
Having so many launchers would definitely make the phone run slower.
I suggest you stick to 1-2.
Take a look at ur ram. Mine starts lagging at around 8%.
sort of off-topic.. but what is Windows7 Launcher
He possibly means Zune Home?

Its a launcher that replicates a windows 7 desktop. Pollpix posted a link or something for it. Its cool to play with but not too handy as a day to day home screen

apart from testing, i cannot think of any reasons to be running more than 2 launchers. this will be consuming resources for sure, especially if you are using switcher to flip between them (this leaves them ALL open, all the time!)
Pick 1 or 2 launchers and remove all the others. u will be surprised how much quicker it is!

I removed all the launchers and tested with my default launcher, it seems AUTO SYNC is causing some lagging issues, when I turned if off all seems Ok.
With AUTO SYNC off, even 4 launchers are working fine, minor lagging issues in LauncherPro (while using Launcher Pro widgets).
My conclusion: Turn Auto Sync Off + Use 3 Launchers at max

SOLVED [Q] App drawer icons.

Hi all,
My question is, is it possible to change the stock look of the icons in the app drawer, I want them to look like the original icons as that show up in ADW, CM7, Sense launchers. Don't like the background square coloured box effect put by default by samsung on all icons.
I know I can use a different launcher to over come this issue but is it possible to have this mod with the stock samsung touch wiz launcher?
Using XXKMP, ext4, deodexed, CF Root & 3 other mods.
Thanks
You can do it if you mod the touchWIZ launcher apk
Is there a customised version of the touch wiz apk available for the SL? If not can someone please guide me to the guide to modify the same.

Have managed to remove the tiles using TW 4.5 launcher.
My post below from the following thread -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19296478&postcount=208
For all that are curious about touchwiz 4.5 working on our phones, it does. Just download the TW4 manager app from the thread and install, in the menu select latest check for updates & uninstall -> latest stable version, it will check and download the latest stable version and give you an option to install it to system or data, I selected system. Once done if you press the home button, you will get a option to select the launcher you want to use just as when you install custom launchers. Did not need to make any backups of the current launcher, it still works. Use a home switcher app to toggle or set to default between the TW launchers and use whichever one you want.
Have personally not used the 4 version, hence can't comment on differences, my choice was totally based on comments I read in different threads.
It works perfectly well with good customization and for me i got what I was looking for - to remove the tiles behind the icons in the app drawer. Thank God!!!
It's very smooth as well.

Unused ram is wasted ram. What do you plan to so with the unused ram? It's not there to sit and look pretty, it's meant to be used.
People also stop using task killers, they are not meant for GB, it manages itself. If you kill a program it just restarts till it's background work is done and shuts itself off. You end up using more battery just in. this process.

i know that buddy. I am trying to tell u that if u want a good launcher which will not have icon backdrop then use go launcher. Its super smooth than tw4.5. Also I am telling u to avoid tw4.5 because it will slow down ur phone. U will experience lag while doing multi tasking. I have used many launchers that why I told u. Anyway its ur choice.

Tried Go launcher, fount it to be laggy especially on home home screens changeover.
As an update, I have removed 4.5 and am currently testing the version 4, it seems alright too, definitely smoother than 4.5 but you lose out on a lot of customization and infinite loop scrolling on home screens.

[Q] Does changing the stock launcher to a play-store one affects performance?

Hi.
So I see Nova is liked.
I am running stock CM.
I was wondering - does changing launcher affects performance (since the device needs to run both all the time)?
Isn't any launcher other than stock, behaves just like an app (memory draw, battery usage, so on)?
Thanks!

It doesn't affect performance.. Why running both..?? Get nova and freeze or remove the stock launcher.. You are a root user..

Technically, even the stock launcher is an app.

No. When you choose a default launcher, the other launcher does not draw much memory. If any services are present, it'll be killed after a certain period. So yeah, you can pretty much install any launcher.

(Suggestions) Best Battery efficient launcher

Can anyone please suggest me best launcher which has minimal battery usage?
Probably the stock launcher. I say that because if you are not rooted than the stock launcher is going to be running ANYWAY in the background and taking up the same percentage of system resources.....and any other launcher you install would just be stacked on top
I would prefer Nova launcher that I used on my previous phone, but I then thought more carefully over the situation and decided, whats the point? I would certainly not gain a performance increase

i hate stock launcher... so ... btw i am too using nova as my default launcher...
Evie launcher, very little to no use power consumption, in the maximum power consumption conditions, it uses nearly 1 mAh (every 1 hour)

I'd suggest Lawnchair. But other good launchers I've tried are ADW launcher, Action, (Evie and Nova but I've seen those already discussed above)

According to me, Google now is the best launcher because it provides stock like experience and it hardly consumes battery and memory.. I dont care about customizing the screen. Simple is better
