[Q] USA WIFI/3G Xoom correct steps to root, update to tiamat kernel and cwm recovery?

I looked through all threads and I am a bit confused.... and with many reports of bricked devices, I am scared too....
Is this the correct succession of steps to gain root, update to tiamat kernel and install clockworkmod recovery on U.S. wifi/3G xoom?
Use one-click root method to gain root
Flash tiamat kernel (first 1.3.0, then 1.3.2, then 1.4.0? Manually create /sdcard2 folder?)
Flash clockworkmod recovory

First, OEM unlock w fastboot.
Next, root. I would do it "the long way" via adb. (Sorry no link avail)
Then tiamat 1.3.1
Then Cwm
Then tiamat 1.4.0 via cwm sdcard
I followed that order w my vzw xoom. Works like a charm. I'm sure there are other ways, but this order worked for me. I like doing the steps manually because it teaches you about adb fastboot etc.

[Q][SOLVED] Upgrading from Canadian Wifi 3.0.1 to US Wifi 3.1

Hi All!
I would like to convert my completely stock non-rooted Canadian Wifi Xoom (MZ604) into a US xoom so that I can install the 3.1 software on it, as well as root, sdcard capable kernel, and CWM recovery.
Unfortunately, after reading many many of the threads here, I am totally confused as to what order to follow. Here is what I'm thinking, but please please correct me if I am wrong:

Is that it? I feel like I'm missing something or that I may brick my device since it is not a US-rom that I am using as a base.

[update 28th May]: The steps that I followed to get 3.1 with CWM & Tiamat on my Canadian Xoom are below, in post #7.

1. boot the device into fastboot and unlock it. Erase all cache and wipe the userdata.
2. Flash the complete US 3.0.1 HWI69 ROM. (yes, do this)
2.1 Root the 3.0.1 Rom
3. Install CWM recovery from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1074979 using the fastboot method.
4. Install the 3.1 update from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1074609, skipping the 3G step since I only have Wifi.
5. Install Tiamat 1.4.2 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978013. (update to one of the newest kernels)
6. Install International Language Pack from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1083612 to get back all languages from 3.0.1 ROM.

I was hesitant to do that since I am reading a lot of bricking stories lately, I have a canadian MZ604 stock too, will do the same if you succeed!

Alright folks, It's been a few days now since I've updated my Xoom, so here's the process that I used. Note that it is different from the steps I listed in the original post:
1. Unlock the device via fastboot. Instructions here. DO NOT RE-LOCK EVER!!
2. Flash the Official & complete US 3.0.1 HWI69 ROM. Links here. Every time I tried to download the "does not require login" version from mediafire I got a corrupted zip, so instead I downloaded from the Motorola developer site (with instructions) here.
3. Once the 3.0.1 Rom was up and running, and I had an internet connection, I got the OTA notification for the 3.1 update and installed it. It took about 10 minutes to notify me once I had connection, probably because it had to download it before notifying me. After the install and reboot process, I had a stock 3.1 install, but still didn't have sdcard access. So, I kept going.
4. Install CWM 3.0.2.8 recovery, using the fastboot method. Instructions here.
Once CWM was installed and I had the ability to backup the rom, I immediately made a backup before EACH of the following steps was performed. I know it is overkill to make that many backups, but I wanted to be sure I wasn't going to screw up my device at any given step and have to start over again.
5. Root the 3.1 rom from here. After rooting I had sdcard access within honeycomb at /sdcard/external.
6. Installed Tiamat 1.4.2 kernel. Instructions here.
7. Installed the Language Pack from here, but when I rebooted the system it went into a loop on the purple animated honeycomb logo. So, I rebooted into recovery again, and did a "wipe data / factory reset" - this allowed my machine to reboot normally, but I had to reconfigure all my settings and reinstall all my apps.
So as of right now I'm on 3.1 HMJ37, rooted, with CWM recovery, Tiamat kernel, and have international languages! It's great!!

Thanks for the detailed info... I flashed the complete US 3.0.1 ROM on my canadian xoom and got the 3.1 OTA update as well. So now my canadian wifi xoom is on US 3.1 !
I will not root it for now since i don't really need the external SDcard for now.

When you say Flash US 3.0.1 ...do you have steps to do that? I'm just wondering how to do it...since I don't have a functional SD Card I guess its not the flash update.zip method...
Can't wait to be running the US rom and not care for motorola Canada anymore!!!

How to flash
I've spent hours on this and I guess I must be stupid, but I can NOT figure out how to flash a ROM! I've tried the ADB commands, I've download the ROM manager, etc, etc, etc...I cannot find any instructions on how to do this! It must be very simple because every time I look for instructions, they always just say "flash the ROM" like it's nothing. But HOW???
Very frustrating...there appears to be no single place that outlines all the steps in one place - it takes a dozen web pages to do the simplest things...
I also want to update my Canadian ROM to a US ROM. I'm unlocked, I'm running Tiamat 1.3.0 but I don't know what to do now...?
It seems as though having an external micro SD card supported is a prerequisite, but I cannot figure out how to get that to work either. The frustrating part of all this is that I do (Windows) computer support - I'm not new to technology in any way, but I have seldom been more frustrated than this trying to find one set of clear instructions...!

after flashing using the instructions on post number 7 with the HRI39 bin images and fastboot my tablet doesnt boot. it just sits at the motorla logo for ages and ages and ages...
do I maybe have to wait like an hour or something?

Converted my MZ604 Singapore version to US & OTA update to 3.1
I managed to reflash International images to US and OTA update to 3.1 using a mod microUSB cable. I didn't need to root my xoom to do it rather a hardwired method.

Can you please elaborate on how we do this? How do we flash a ROM? I only know how to do it in CWM Recovery, but not elsewhere.

Ok, hook your xoom up to your computer and open up a command line. Then CD to your tools directory of the android sdk and input these commands.
adb reboot fastboot
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot
And your good to go..... continue from the next step just be carefully to input the commands exactly, and for the love of Pete DONT UNPLUG your xoom while flashing

And do NOT relock!!

1) For step two, the img files all come from HWI69.zip?
2) For step four, do I want to do it with CWM or without? Is there more risk to one vs. the other?
3) For step six, to boot into recovery mode, is the following sequence correct?
Turn your XOOM off
Press Power to turn your XOOM back on
When the Motorola Dual Core boot screen appears tap Volume Down repeatedly until "Android Recovery" is displayed
Press Volume Up to enter Recovery

1) Correct - also, I know I keep saying this, but on the Moto site instructions for flashing they tell you to relock. Don't!!
2) I used the fastboot method (without). Make sure to download the img and not the zip.
3) I tend to wait on the Moto logo for about 3 secs then just press down once. Then up once you get the recovery option. Never fails.

Question : why shouldn't we "RE-LOCK EVER" ?
I ask because I've relocked mine after flashing Europe stock on my US Xoom (I [stupidly] did what I saw on motorola dev instructions...).

How to root Xoom with Android 4.1.1?

I have looked all over the forums and I can not find it. All the forums show how to root a Xoom with Honeycomb or Ice Cream Sandwich TO Jellybean, but what if i already have JellyBean? I just want to get superuser access onto the stock Jellybean ROM and Kernel.

Do I need to have clockwork mod installed or anything, i have done NOTHING root to my xoom. I rooted my HTC EVO 4G. But i havent flashed a recovery, installed a ROM, No SU, NOTHING. So what exactly should i do with your zip?

Use instructions and tools in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468298 to get Clockwork installed, and then use the modded zip that matt4321 posted (I think that should work... )

Yeah use the AIO tool to unlock your bootloader, then you want to install CWM recovery, then boot into recovery and flash the zip I uploaded

I used this exact process (ended up just GEDify'ing it after sending it back to stock), but before I did that everything worked fine.

You have to use another recovery. Eos-r6 was abandoned and another recovery came in as the perfect one. TWRP recovery

I installed TWRPv2.8.0.0-Wingray-Non-BigPart on my Xoom. That process went flawlessly.
I used TWRP to install "vanilla" Xoom-Universal-Root.zip. This also appeared to go flawlessly.
However, various root checker apps tell me I do NOT have root.
Please, any suggestions? I ultimately want to get to BigPart but I'm stuck at this point.

Yeah, that zip should be good to root any Xoom on 4.1. I wouldn't bother sorting root if you want to go to bigpart as it wipes everything anyway.
Jump straight to bigpart, read read and read again this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2506997
Once that is all sorted and booted, I think you should be good to just flash whatever root tool you want (SuperSU, phh superuser etc)
My memory is rusty on all this though, I haven't messed with my xoom in a long time and you quoted a post over 4 years old lol

I know everyone hates people who post without searching the forums first, but I did and I am still very lost on what all I need to do to root my device and get going flashing ROMs with the new 2.20 Root Method.
I have used this thread to get me started (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1684382&highlight=root+guide) and I have already downloaded Android SDK from google + Platform-tools + Google USB Driver but I don't want to get going on root because in the instructions from 2.20 Root it states:
10. After unlocking the bootloader, you can flash a custom recovery partition via fastboot, boot into recovery mode, and use a recovery ADB shell or install from an update.zip to install Superuser and su (I do not provide support for custom recoveries, but this is a straightforward process that other people can help with).
I have searched the above linked thread and cannot determine how to generate a custom recovery partition (unless I did when I used the command "adb -backup all" in the platform-tools folder of the Android SDK..Furthermore, I do not know what "Superuser and su" is referencing.
If anyone could point me in the right direction, I dont mind doing the reading myself but I have gotten bogged down in the details. Basically, I want to save all of you the trouble of another noob who has bricked their phone because they didn't do their homework. Thanks all for your help!

I second this request. I feel like there are loads of helpful threads but after searching for a long time I don't see anything that leads someone new to Android rooting from stock 2.2 to having something like CM10 on their device. All of the write-ups I've found assume more experience than I have. Is there a general guide somewhere that I'm missing? Maybe something that explains rooting, backing up, flashing, etc. from start to finish where we can replace "this is where you root your device" with the new rooting method? I'm assuming it's out there but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

You don't need to "generate" anything, not sure where you got that terminology from. Just install Goomanager from the Play Store and use that to install TWRP recovery.

In plain terms a superuser = a root user. But when discussed here, it usually references the app that manages what other apps have root access.
Superuser is required to perform root functions.

They are many simple tutorials for rooting but do not know why you guys having hard time. Ok here is
1) You got Android SDK from google + Platform-tools + Google USB Driver -
2) Only for windows - Download htc sync ( It will install necessary htc drivers) - Link
3) Just to check if htc drivers installed properly , open "C:\android-sdk\platform-tools" ( Or folder where adb and fastboot exists) then "Press shift + right click and select "Open command window here" ( open command prompt and cd "folder where adb and fastboot exists).
4) In command window type " adb devices" and see output - If you get output then htc drivers installed properly.
You can skip step 3 and step 4 - These steps are only for verification
5) Goto [ROOT] HTC One X AT&T 2.20 Firmware - X-Factor root exploit and follow the instructions there.
6) Once you successfully root your device using above exploit then goto - [How To] Flash Custom recovery and ROMS after 2.20 root complete the steps to flash custom recovery and if you want to flash ROMS
7) To unlock BOOT LOADER use this link - [INDEX] AT&T/ROGERS One X Resources Compilation Roll-Up , follow the instructions under " BOOTLOADER UNLOCK, SUPER CID, AND S-OFF"
You can also goto this link - [ROOT][2.20] One XL Bootloader unlock & Root guide By XsMagical - Very nice tutorial, if you find above links difficult to follow
Note* : During exploit or flashing recovery they talk about using fastboot commands, In order to execute them you need goto C:\android-sdk\platform-tools" ( Or folder where adb and fastboot exists) then "Press shift + right click and select "Open command window here" ( open command prompt and cd "folder where adb and fastboot exists) and then execute the commands ..

Everything seems to assume the user knows how to do something mentioned in another thread, which in turn seems to assume something else. Your post seems like a very clear start-to-finish explanation. Maybe it should be made into a stickie in Q&A. I can surely handle step 1 but maybe that could be explained (or at least a link added to an appropriate thread).
If all this is out there somewhere already then I certainly didn't know where to find it. I appreciate your help.

1) Download Android SDK from here {For Windows}
2) Download java you need it - here

Thank you all for helping gather some resources for me that I know are up to date etc. - Thankfully I do know a few unix commands so that I can navigate the command prompt aspects...I'm sure these threads get annoying so thank you very much for getting a new-to-root user up and running. I'll try this all later this evening and throw an update to let you all know how it goes -- hopefully no "bricked my phone" thread in the future

Excellent I have successfully unlocked my bootloader and achieved perm-root! Now on to flashing roms and I have some questions:
1) I have read GuyIncognito's instructions here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1952076) on Flashing ROMs and how to go about doing that and i fully understand the process but I want to confirm (Yes I Have TWRP recovery installed and running) I only need to extract the boot.img out of the winRAR file of the ROM that I downloaded? (CM10 seems to be popular so I'm starting with that as my first ROM) There are so many other files in the package and I'm wondering why do you only need the boot.img file to be present with your adb and fastboot files from the google dev SDK -- the boot.img is only 5 MB and I can hardly believe that it constitutes the whole OS?
2) How do I go about installing gapps after I have flashed my ROM? I have downloaded Gapps so I have the file...do I place it in my SD Card and then enter recovery to install it? or Do have to use adb to flash it
Edit: I also have Superuser app on my stock ROM right now
Any further help is much appreciated, thank you very much.

Boot.img is technically just the kernel, it's the heart of the OS you are installing. Once extracted, rezip rom. Flash boot.img first using fastboot command prompt. Then flash the Rom itself that you rezipped through twrp
You can easily just flash gapps through twrp.

Thanks for the reply, the community on XDA kicks a$$, doing some additional reading just plz tell me if I understand this correctly...
1) Copy CM10 zip and Gapps zip into phone storage
2) Follow GuyIncognito's instructions on flashing boot.img
3) Boot into recovery AFTER Flashing boot.img
4) Select "Install" in TWRP
5) Install CM10 zip First
6) Install Gapps zip next
7) Reboot
8) profit?

follow his instructions and you'll be fine
flash the boot.img in flashboot, reboot in recovery, flash your nameofrom.zip, flash your gapps pkg just like the rom (on your sd card), enjoy...

yes that;s correct you may wanna backup your sd card 1st as well and do a full wipe before flashing the rom.

Just in case your not familiar with fastboot, the command is fastboot flash boot boot.img

By Flash do you mean using TWRP recovery "install" feature and selecting the CM10.zip I have in my SD Card, and gapps? Just making sure I dont have to do it via command prompt cuz then I may have to do some additional reading

yes install. you dont need to do it from command prompt, additional reading is always good

Alright Looks like I successfully flashed CM10! I flashed gapps with it at the same time but I have run into a problem -- It keeps telling me that all these gapps processes have failed and I have no access to a keyboard! Do I have to reflash gapps?

Hmm ok I think I messed up here....
My phone was essentially non-functional with CM10 -- Nothing worked and it took me a while to navigate to enable USB Debugging on the given mod. One I enabled USB Debugging in CM10 I ran the following:
adb reboot recovery
Once I was in recovery, I Restored a backup of my device that I made BEFORE I obtained permanent root via the toolkit as it was recommended during this time to make a recovery.
Recovery worked successfully, now after reboot it hangs on the HTC screen and then goes black, then reboots again, and again, and again...
I haven't been able to use the volume down + power button to even get back into the bootloader.....hopefully I am not screwed here...Any suggestions?

Yes that would make sense, but the problem is A) How do I access that backup's .img file? B) How can I enter bootloader again? It won't let me using Power+Vol Down, no matter how long I hold it for --- unless I need to hold it longer?

You have to hold it till the buttons flash and goes black... Hold for about 2-3 more seconds and release the power button, but keep the volume down held until you get to a white hboot screen. (it'll have three skating droids)

Ok got it, did a factory reset then re-flashed CM10 boot.img...Flashed CM10 BY ITSELF this time, without doing gapps at the same time, rebooted into recovery after CM10 rolled up, then flashed gapps alone, everything is working smoothly! Now, time to restore my apps

is there an alternate method to root this tablet?

I've searched everywhere and it seems that the only method is to root is debugsf. For some reason it doesn't work. I've ran the tool 50 times and failed with different results. I'm on stock 4.03 and I already unlocked, but i don't see how that will effect it as I've tried to root before the unlock. Why does it not work? How can I root a different way?

If you're unlocked, then you can flash a custom recovery via fastboot. Check out the all-in-one thread in the general section...

If you do not want to unlock just yet, you can downgrade using the .30 ICS update from Asus.com than you can root, use OTA rootkeeper to backup the root, and update to .18 again. There are several posts on this forum, explaining how to do exactly that in great detail.

I took a look at the fast boot option and went to the thread you pointed me out to and the instructions are not clear at all. Its says that I have to put the twrp.blob in the same directory as fastboot.exe. Well where the hell is the fastboot.exe directory? I tried to update to the official jb so I use that rooting method, but noooo the stock recovery is retarded and can't find the internal sd, so I only have the option to factory reset, wipe cache or reboot. Can anyone help me? WTF am I doing wrong? I've rooted 5 android devices so far and this is the only time where it seems impossible.

Maybe I could give some insight.
Just went thru this recently.
For myself I used fastboot while connected to a Windows PC.
A PC will need to have Google SDK installed (might be best to search Google for the SDK installion procedure)
You can also get what you need in something called Platform Tools.
Fastboot from the stock recovery connects via USB to the Advanced Developer Bridge thru a command window.
Once this command window (ADB) on the PC is open boot to stock recovery on the tablet.
Select the USB option using the volume button.
The PC bridge window should show device available with the serial number of the tablet (if I remember correctly)
From the prompt you can type the appropriate command to write or flash things to the tablets system.
Hope other smarter guys chime in here because I really don't want to lead you in the wrong direction...

Yay I finally got twrp on here and I'm about to flash clean rom. Searched the pc for fastboot.exe and there it is. I had to install twrp through fastboot and it took 3 times before I realized I needed to update my sdk tools. Tried again with profit.
