[Q] RNDIS or CDC-ECM support over USB? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to get basic RNDIS or ECM support using a USB host cable?
I have a 4G USB dongle that is hostless, meaning it does not require any drivers to run. It simply needs the PC/Tablet to recognize ethernet over USB. It works great on a my laptop running either Win7 or Ubuntu without installing any drivers.
Using an OTG USB cable that I made the dongle will connect to the network just fine, just the Xoom does not recognize the ethernet connection over USB.
Can anyone offer some help? Right now my Xoom is completely stock, but if there is hope that this can work with some other kernel I am up for experimenting.

I'm not familiar with the method you're asking about, but Tiamat 1.4.2 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978013
) has this listed in the release notes:
•Implemented USB Ethernet for USB Tether from phone to Xoom!
Whether it meets your protocol needs is the question to ask in that thread I guess?

I noticed that as well. I am currently running completely stock right now. I am a little concerned with going down this path. I know there is a ton of information out there and honestly it is a bit overwhelming. I am not concerned with the actual process but more any negative impacts to running a custom kernel. I am not even sure if these are valid concerns.
-OTA updates
-Netflick and Google Movies
-Android and Amazon purchased applications
-Stability
I know this is going to derail this topic but can you share with me your experience?

Netflix works on my rooted epic, just Google movies seem to be the issue.
All app purchases are linked to your respective accounts, they carry across devices and flashes.
OTA updates should never be excepted if your rooted.
Stability is usually greater on custom kernels and Roms than the stock experience. How ever it can take a few flashes to find the right combination for your taste, style, and needs.

There is a lot of info and paths to choose. Go slowly and follow directions concisely. If you're not sure ask before embarking.
If it doesn't work out you can always go back to stock.
Ota are always reworked for rooted users - never accept an ota on a customer kernel without the dev saying OK.
Google movies doesn't work - I'll bet Google is afraid that stream recording will take place and they have to avoid piracy.
Netflix doesn't exist for xoom yet but there's a good chance it will work since Netflix auth is by device/account, not just account.
Market follows account - any device any kernel.
Stability varies on kernels, but the most popular ones are usually more stable and have better features/fixes than stock.

Thank you both for your comments. I may just go the Tiamat route. I need to find a good step by step guide, including all steps to go from bone stock to having the custom kernel. There are a lot of guides on doing each step individually, but it would be nice to find one concise guide so I do not miss something in the middle.
I am pretty happy with my Xoom now, the only driving factors are the USB over ethernet and it would be nice to use my SD card for something. Neither one of these is a huge deal, just a nice to have. Given enough time I think Google\Motorola will fix the SD card. The USB over ethernet is more of a neat trick. I am usually in an area with WiFi and if not I can BT tether to my phone. The WiMax dongle would be interesting to have as a third option.
I see there are some options with the latest kernel with how much overclocking, so I will most likely be conservative and go with the slower one.

motorola xoom, asus transformer or acer tab?

I can buy either of these three on craigslist but which one should I get?
asus 32gb price $425
xoom 32gb price $400
acer 16gb price $350
so why should I pick this tablet and why? also Im planing on rooting so which would be easy to root?
It depends on your wants and needs. Just look up the available accessories for each. Personally I'd get the asus. If i could trade the xoom for it I would. Because for me, the keyboard attachment is something that could highly benefit me.
Xoom easy as pie to root
The xoom is a "Google Expirence Device".
If you dont want above then choose another tablet.

It is in a spot where it is not accidentally pressed. I personally think its in a ok spot. You get used to it after awhile.
I would keep my xoom for 2 main reasons: usb port on the tab and google experience device. Also to mention the build quality, but well, I understand people would prefer the screen/weight of the TF (keyboard dock is useless for me, I prefer my netbook for that)
I dont think the zero default tab is already available but my xoom is perfect for my needs

Good choice It's really an 'all in one' tab (meaning connections are on the tab itself) compared to the other ones (Galaxy Tab, Asus). Just the Acer/Toshiba comes close to it in term of connectivity.
Right now I'm just using the Tiamat 1.4.4 (no overclock) which perfectly fits my needs (USB host via usb OTG cable for usb stick/external hdd, camcorder, camera etc..), VPN connections (IPSec to my office Cisco device).
I'm about to test soon the newly Team Tiamat Xoom 1.1 which seems to be very promising
Devs are doing a wonderful job on this tab ! They really break any limitations it comes with.

Basically, root allows you to customize your Xoom. I've installed custom kernels and ROM (all Tiamat version), I've changed my boot animation and my fonts, with the custom kernel/ROM I can overclock the cpu which gives more speed for various apps, and so on. You can do themes and use apps that require root, to really take control of your Xoom. For me it's the only way to go.

Where are the Kernels

I know there is a lot more development for the HTC phones I've previously owned, but where the heck are kernels on this damn thread? Most of the ones i'm finding are in "All-in-one" packages.
Can someone point me to any threads that are just standalone kernels? Otherwise, a recommendation would be greatly appreciated.
Specifically, I'm looking for a kernel that works with WiFi tether. I've tried every app, changed all the apppropriate settings, and nothing works.

Wow, aren't we demanding...
As I see it, you can run Imnuts kernel. You can run Imoseyon 4.0 kernel. You can run stock kernel and root it.
You can run Froyo if you want with its respective kernels.
I'm certain WiFi tether works on all the GB and likely most of the Froyo kernels (I tried all the Froyo kernels to my knowledge.) There are some active threads regarding Wifi tether in QandA as well as General.
My recommendation is to try stock deodexed/debloated EP4D with IMO 4.0 kernel or run Tweakstock with IMO 4.0 kernel. I think its a great kernel.
I'm sure that Infinity with Infinity kernel is pretty sweet too, I ran an earlier release of it.
The development for this phone is actually pretty good considering. There aren't too many options, but at least the options we do have are great, especially considering the hurdles that developers have had to cross to get it where we are now.
I can thank this phone for making me dive deeper into learning about Android than I otherwise would have if I had a phone that was easier to mod.
One its set up right, I prefer this phone over any other phone that is available today (on any carrier.)

Try this, go to this site:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
click on the downloads tab and choose one of your choice, i tried the new versions and they did not work for me, wifi did not work after turning it off, so i use an older one:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_0-pre12.apk&can=1&q=
now install it,
once installed, open it, press the menu key then choose Settings and then go to the option "Change Device-Profile"
I've tried the "Samsung Captivate" and the "Samsung Epic 4G" options and they work i believe that the "Samsung Galaxy S" and the Samsung Fascinate" work as well.
Then go back and go to the option that says "Change Setup-Method" and choose "Softap for Samsung (master)"
the rest of the settings is up to you, i believe that there are certain forms of security protocols not supported but you do have access control that allows you to choose who you allow to connect through your phone
hope this helps
This has been supported by all kernels ive tried so far including stock, you just need root access

Starting with Gingerbread, Verizon has blocked the ability of 3rd party apps to enable the stock wifi tethering app as you could with froyo, now you HAVE TO use other tethering apps such as the one i posted earlier
the one posted allows the phone to act as an AP(Access Point), other apps such as barnacle(available in the market) can only do ad-hoc or peer-to-peer sharing, this is sometimes not supported by some devices such as Xbox 360, and the Nintendo 3DS

+100 to the rest of your post but this part is the essence of why I love this device. One additional thing is that this phone's camera performance is unsurpassed by any other phone I've seen. Others are blown away by the quality. With that said, I haven't messed with an nokia n8/n9, but I wouldn't want to daily those devices anyway so that's a moot point.

This is very true!!. If having issue with wifi tet., just reflash your Image and try again. Sometime flashing Rom+Kernel too much without proper wiping can cause residual and corruption.
I know I'm some months late here but I wanted to thank you all for the input provided. I ended up using an older WiFi tethering app. This was for a coworker's phone, so that's why my question sounded so rushed/demading. Just picked up a Galaxy Note

Xoom ICS & Cisco Access Points

This thread is only for people running a Cisco Access point, preferably a Aironet 1200.
I currently have the 3g/4g version, and this behavior seems exist on all ICS builds I've tried.
I started a thread on Motorola's forums here.
I have 35/35 at home, and on pre-ics builds I get about 25/25 on my xoom. With ICS builds however my download is about 400kb-1200mbits. With upload being 25mbits. So it seems to only be on the downlink where the issues exist.
I've tried building it from source, I've tried other roms, everything that is ICS is slow download which makes streaming terrible.
My Nexus S running ICS does not have this issue so it seems something specific to ICS and the XOOM.
Anyone running the same sort of equipment as me, and running into the same problem?
Thanks
I got a Xoom on stock ics, and I have a bunch of aironet 1231g and 1242ag aps at work. I could try some stuff out if I knew what you meant by the 35/35 or 25/25 stuff, I probably wouldn't want to change my xoom that much with roms or anything (I just rebuilt it tonight to see if it fixed some slowness I was seeing after the ota to ics) but could test on stock ics, just tell me how your testing it... if it makes a difference the aps are all light weight aps managed by WLCs. I could probably snag a 1242 ( and maybe a 1231 if I can find a spare one) and dumb it down with autonomous image if that is more how you are rolling, but it might take me a couple of days...

What I mean by 35/35 is thats what my internet is at home. But any speed test will show the issue if it is a cisco issue. You'll see that download is terrible, and upload is normal.
Im still not sure what 35/35 means, i've never seen any metrics for throughput / network performance displayed this way...

35mbits over 35mbits.
I have a symetrical fiber connection that gives me somewhere between 35-45mbit download, and 35-40mbit upload.
We found a solution on the other thread. It appears that the new broadcom drivers are now 802.11 certified and there appears the be a bug that causes 802.11 draft APs achieve data decent data rates.
So here are the 3 fixes.
1. Buy a new AP
2. Disable you're mcs rates and lose 802.11n
3. Pray that motorola fixes it.
I'm currently running with 2. Shopping around with 1. Oh and have no doubt in my mind that 3 is a pipe dream.

Any Doubleshot ROMS have USB Host Support?

Just wondering. Waiting to really do some fun stuff with this fun if/when we gain that capability. Does anyone know if any of our roms have it?
Bulletproof doesn't yet but I was around and very closely following that develop from nothing to something on the Nook Color and have at least some of the project files from playing along way back when.
It's on the short list when I get the chance to start working on the ROM again, because I plan to use that as a band-aid for the PS3 controller while working on fixing the BT issue around that in Sense.
It would also be nice to be able to plug in and use my handful of flash drives while out and about using the compact package the doubleshot is instead of having to rely on something as large as the tablet as the best I got.
Right now there are other issues to work out on the device first as far as my dev time is allocated, and I can't speak for any other dev's work, but I am curious as well to know if anyone else is spending time on this.

Well I'm so glad you have a plan
Just a side question for you Blue: IF we do get a OTA update from T-Mobile or HTC and it is ICS...would you rebase to that and start developing for ICS?
Because I see you are trying hard to make the stock ROM all that it can be; but if we get a OTA ICS would you switch your attention to making that 'all that it can be?'
Typed by ---- oh wait! I'm schizophrenic!

Appreciate the kind words _atlien_
@CoNsPiRiSiZe :
If HTC releases an official ICS ROM with corresponding kernel source, i'd jump on that pretty exclusively in an instant without a backward thought.
The only kernel source we have is 2.6.35.10 which corresponds to the 1.28.531.9 / .10 software version. This is really the limiter on my decision for what to work with.
Being as this is my first Android phone, I don't really know enough yet about how it works to be comfortable writing my own source for a kernel (basically) from scratch like tbalden and others are doing, so starting with a working and official source is necessary at this point in my education so I can make progress instead of a mess.
I imagine by the time I eventually move on to another device I'll know enough to just do what I want. Not having prior experience with this stuff is a bit frustrating sometimes because I do really want to play with ICS and the latest and greatest Google is providing us. Intentionally ignoring it sucks, but i'd rather make progress and not problems, hence this is my pennance for not getting a smart phone before this device launched.
I'd rather get a solid education then a whole lot of scattered knowledge if possible, my aim is for being involved with Android for a long time to come so having the patience and restraint to build a solid base of knowledge on how it works will serve me well in the future, even if it forces me to work with yesterday's software now.
Think of it like learning to drive a stickshift on a $200 beater P.O.S. instead of in a lamborghini - you could do it either way but one method makes more sense then the other.
The other thing, though, is the balance of trying to do what would most benefit the whole doubleshot user base the most instead of just the people on my ROM or whatever, so something like working on and posting details about progress on S-OFF trumps it all because that is the single most important issue I can help with I think. Even if I don't get it, maybe my notes and discoveries will help someone else solve it who has a better understanding or more experience with that kind of stuff.
Both of my devices were S-OFF and I had to go out of my way to learn how to put one S-ON again to work on the problem, I could have just ignored it because it didn't affect me but i'd rather try to help everyone, at any cost, then just serve my own selfish desires.
/end thread derailment

The question still remains, though, is anyone else working on USB host / OTG cable support?

PS3 controllers cannot connect to and be used by HTC Sense devices, the bluetooth software HTC went with prevents it. If you flash an AOSP ROM you can use one, though, so it's not that it doesn't work but that HTC doesn't want to let us. (Technically broadcomm, but their name isn't printed on the device)
USB host support means that if you get a micro-usb to female USB cable or an adapter you could plug in flash drives, portable hard drives or even other devices to this phone directly.
Since I can get usb cables and adapters at the dollar store now, they aren't hard to come by.
Being able to plug in a flash drive, or install linux on the doubleshot and use it to run the android sdk and program other phones or android devices by plugging it in to this one would be nice - I can install linux on my nook color and then plug this phone into it directly and run fastboot commands while I'm sitting on the bus or something without a bulky laptop - pretty sweet, huh?
No reason we can't do it with this nice, tiny, portable android powehouse other then someone hasn't sat down to take the time and make it happen.

[Q] Latest Stable Rom? [Galaxy S Relay 4G]

Hey guys,
With the communities help, I've rooted my phone, and have begun experimenting with roms, I'm pretty excited about all this -- but so far, I haven't found one yet that meets my needs.
The only roms I could even find are the ones linked to by this thread. But I can't comment there because I'm an uber-n00b. **** yeah, n00b status! XD
So here's some of the issues I'm having, maybe someone can point me in the right direction:
I'm using CWM to flash roms, and I can't flash the "Debloated Jelly Bean stock image" linked to in that thread, CWM tells me there's an error in the zip halfway through. Though if I do an "unzip -test" on it from the command line, it verifies okay -- so I'm guessing the package is either borked, or intended to be used differently than how I'm trying to use it.
That being said, I've had great success flashing the unofficial, and experimental Cyanogen 10.1s -- but none of them that I have tested have all of the features I want working. Is there a recommended version? The features I want are pretty basic things:
First and foremost: Wi-Fi tethering (I'd pay for it if T-mobile had an option for it, but they don't -- not on unlimited anyway -- and I always hit my data-cap even without tethering, if I went on a non-unlimited plan, it would cost me $20/more a month and for about the last 10-15 days of each month I'd be stuck on EDGE/2G -- to me, that's unacceptable.)
Being able to connect to Wi-Fi networks (obviously not at the same time as tethering, but I expect both to work).
GPS
Bluetooth!! (The latest "stable" the Unofficial 13-03-09 does not appear to be able to connect to my headset.)
The Stock Clock: Alarms App (Also seems to be broken in the 13-03-09 release.)
And obviously: Calling, Texting, Camera, Flashlight
Basic Battery Stuff (Latest "stable" and nightlies both have issues with determining if the battery charger is connected or not, reboot seems to fix it most of the time).
The one thing I don't use (that I know about) on my phone is NFC. I like the idea of NFC, especially to pay for things, I just have never bothered to **** with it to set it up.
So, Is there a list of the nightlies and like some quick indicators that say which key features are working or not? If not, I might be willing to set one up for the most recent ones (at least until I find one that has features that I want all working more or less). If this already exists though, it would be a great time saver. If not, is anyone willing to help me set this up? The testing will go a lot better with >1 person testing things.
I figure stock does almost everything I need except tethering, but I can't figure out how to get the debloated stock rom on, and installing the tethering fix for regular stock (or Cyanogen for that matter) just makes the phone not boot.
Thanks for reading, any thoughts / comments -- and even moreso: answers -- are greatly appreciated. [And hopefully, none of the above is taken as criticism to anyone, as it's not meant that way, clearly, I'm a little frustrated, but I'm also very much excited to be finally modding my phone, and it wouldn't be possible without all the community support that has gone into this development!]
