[GUIDE][INFO] Entourage Pocket Edge Quick Reference - Rooting, Installing Gapps, etc. - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

This is a reference thread to consolidate all the helpful information in the main Entourage Pocket Edge Development thread. If you have questions regarding the material posted here or need troubleshooting assistance, POST THERE instead of in this thread. I would like to keep this thread more as an index.
Many thanks to the original authors of the posts linked here. I'm just referencing them. They were the folks who did the real work figuring this stuff out. If you get a chance, hit the Thanks button on their posts. Especial thanks to kennyminot & brianb5010, who pioneered getting a working Market.
Nifty Things To Do with the PE:
Install the Amazon App Store
Entourage has closed its doors and will no longer be offering its meager selection of apps through the Store that comes pre-loaded on the device. They recommend installing the Amazon App Store. I do too because it's probably the easiest way to get z4root to root your device.
Root Your Device
Install z4root from the Amazon App Store and select the Permanent Root option. The app does the rest. So easy!
Sideload Apps from Your Computer or Another Android Device
Method 1: Download the apk to your computer and then connect your PE to the computer via USB. Mount your PE and transfer the apk file from your computer to your PE. Unmount PE, locate the transferred apk, click on it to install.
Method 2: You must have a Dropbox account for this to work. On your other Android device or your PC, place the desired apk in your Dropbox. Access Dropbox on your PE via the app or via the Dropbox webpage and download the file. Locate the apk on your PE (usually in sdcard/dropbox) and click to install.
Backup/Restore Your Apps
Install Titanium Backup from the Amazon App Store (or sideload it from another source). Titanium Backup is a Swiss Army Knife app. It does many many useful things, including backup your apps with all their settings. IMO, it's worth every penny for the Pro version. Having a working copy of Titanium Backup is necessary for getting Google apps up and running on this device.
Get Google Apps Working
Yes, you can get Android Market, Gmail, Calendar Sync, etc working on the PE. Detailed instructions are HERE.
Switch Internal Memory & SD
Restore Your System
If you mess up your device or simply want to return to factory settings, follow the instructions HERE. Note: restoring via this update.zip will revert your PE back to Dingo (Android 1.6). It's a good idea to download the update file now to have on hand in case of emergency because Entourage is discontinuing the PE and it's not known how long the related websites will remain available. Click HERE to download the Ermine update.zip so you won't be stuck on Dingo if you need to restore. Thanks to the geniuses on MobileRead Forums for discovering the download link for Ermine.
Have a suggestion for something that should be in this index? Have a clearer way of explaining how to do something? Post in this thread or PM me.

[APP][Update] How to update app system in Rom MiuiXt_Final_V2?

Hi everybody!
I have been flash my phone with Rom MiuiXt_Final_V2 in this topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1085683 . It is a great ROM, so beautiful and fast but i have a problem with it. I can't update my apps in the phone (Example: Facebook, Google Maps...)
I try anyway such as via cable, market but result is zero! I have used Titanum to uninstall or used Root explorer to delete that app in /system/app... after that i install the newest version but i still say: "not install" >"<
What should i do? Please help me!
Regard!
in the development thread for the rom (the link you posted), it explains how to update google maps, (can't remember what page..but theres a step by step instruction). Involves using titanuim backup and a 3rd party google map fix. i think this is quite important because it gives you all the new map features.
You can try this for maps & then see if it will update via Market.
Thanks for your help. I will try!

[Q] kobo vox: install google market?

hey all,
first post, apologies if this might be in the wrong place.
i've just picked up the kobo vox, and it's awesome, but i can't figure out how to get the android market running. i've got the apk installed, but the device doesn't give me the option to add a google account. the kobo vox explicitly says it supports the android marketplace, so i'm hoping i'm doing something wrong.
thanks!
I'm in the same state. I've looked about and managed to use some of Cyanogen's packages to install a few core stuff like the framework and the market app itself, but trying to run the Market asks me to register a Google account, which always fails saying there was a connection issue. On a further reboot android.process.acore decided to crash every five seconds and I had to reset the device to factory settings.
This kinda sucks because the device is fairly solid, but the default "market" is a joke. I'm already annoyed by the fairly large amount of preinstalled apps (which can't be uninstalled, as usual), but not having proper Market access would probably be a deal killer.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
What about Rooting?
I have run into the same problem. I think that before you can install the full android market we will have to Root the tablet. Has anyone tried the Gingerbreak.apk? Or is there some other way to Root the tablet?

I've tried GingerBreak on my Kobo Vox and it seems to have installed, however I'm not certain the SU access is working properly. When I try repairing permissions in ROM Manager, I get the message "An Error occured trying to run priviledged commands!". It also fails when I try to backup my ROM.
This is honestly the first Android device I've ever owned so I'm not certain that I'm doing everything correctly. I did make sure to allow SuperUser permissions to ROM Manager, but I'm still getting errors. Any help from a Veteran Android user would be appreciated.
Can't get past the Android Login
After rooting and installing Busybox I was able to install the Android Market but every time I try to login the app will not connect to the Market to confirm my ID, it seems to time out. Any Ideas on what I can try?
Turns out my inability to repair permissions was simply due to me not having busybox installed. I can attest that GingerBreak does successfully root the tablet.
I'm hoping I can find a way to install Clockwordmod recovery in order to install the google apps from CM7. I tried simply copying the files into place without success.
So, did you manage to install busybox? What version and where?
Tell me if you manage to install the recovery, the vox don't seem to have one by default.
If we manage to install all the google app and the googleframeworkservice, that would make the tablet a lot better and give the possibility to install the android market.
I was able to install busybox 4.3 /system/xbin. I do not know about a recovery mode but I did manage to put the tablet into "Safe Mode" after it do stock in a loop at bootup but I am not sure how I did it. According to user help you can not update the firmware from the SDcard.
Have you tried to install Clockwordmod?
I managed to install the googleserviceframework, but I need to install some other thing that don't want to install.
I also manage to install youtube (the real one) and it work great, I just can't sign in...
In the accounts & sync settings section, I can create a google account, but It can't communicate with the google server to set up the account, it give me the error:
"Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server."
It's probably cause by some app that I didn't manage to install yet, like "onetimeinitializer", "googlepartnersetup" and some other...
I've managed to install Busybox, but have yet been unsuccessful installing the Google Framework.
I was able to install the Clockwordmod, but I have yet to find a phone or tablet on it's list that is compatible with the Kobo Vox. I'm going to do my research to see if any phones or tablets have similar specs to the Vox and see if that will work. So far I've just been picking at random and trying it.
Try the B & N Nook Color - same CPU, Memory & screen size.
That was my first thought. Unfortunately no luck. With a couple of them I can seem to get them start loading as if they're going into an update but it always errors out. I'm now just systematically going through the list and driving every version.
If you attempt to install a version of Clockwork made for another device, you'll brick it.
Don't forget that after dropping in the files to the various system directories, you also have to set permit permissions properly.
Also, would be good to request a Kobo Vox forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301121
If anyone in this thread is actually a developer who knows how to compile and so forth, Koush has a brief guide to porting Clockwork:
http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/10/porting-clockwork-recovery-to-new.html
Manual Configuration is a must have option. Thanks
wow, pretty lame that the android market seems not to be supported despite it being touted as an official feature
on a side note, has anyone figured out how to change or remove that default dock (without rooting)? it's kind of a pain in the ass.
I've installed a couple dozen different clockwork of recoveries so far and haven't bricked it yet but maybe I should quit while I'm ahead. I'd rather not brick my shiny new Kobo.
Need Kernal Version & Build Number
I have to return my Kobo Vox because the speaker is not working. Under Privacy Settings I have done a Factory Data Reset but I am still showing the Super Icon. Does anyone have a copy of the original firmware or know how to unroot the device?

Official marketing material says apps but doesn't say Android Market. Some media outlets misquoted and wrote Market falsely.

Factory Reset just clears the data partition but doesn't reset the system partition.
Until someone properly compiles a custom recovery or finds a stock reset file, there's no safe way back.

[Q] apk from android market

hello i downloaded some free apps from the market with a friends rooted phone and backed them up using systemapp remover. i then mailed the apks to my mail address and downloaded them on my tab (which does not have access to the market), i then tried to install them everything looked alright but then i got the message: application not installed and that was for all three free apps from the market. do i have somehow manipulate them before i can install them? thanks for any tips
Maybe those free apps are not compatible with the tab's kernel?
You already said that you backed up those apps from a phone. Try getting a market app and then download them, they'll work.
Use gapps for gingerbread from the development section, and apply them using recovery.
Sent from my Xperia Neo V using XDA
Your apps might not be compatible with your Tab's Kernel.
I would suggest you to install Vending.apk (PlayStore app) first on your tab with the help of root manager and then see if it works or not or search the apps in tab section (PlayStore), follow the old steps and then see if it works.
Good luck!
Try installing the latest version of gapps
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA
Is the phone you are installing these apps to rooted itself? I've had problems with USENET APK downloads in the past, but after rooting just about everything works. Not sure why though.
Out of curiosity, why not download the free apps directly yourself from the market instead of attemting a direct install?
many thanks to all for the tips. will try them in a few hours when its more quite at work.
the reason i can not install it from the market is that my device is not up to the specifications, its one of those hp zeen thingys, not a great tab at all but nice enough to play around with a bit. however what i will try is to install google play as it might work (the new market) but i doubt it, it had the old vending market on it but i removed since it was not working.
what i did also is that i moved those free market apps with root explorer to the tabs memory and try install it from there but it didn't work.
is it maybe because my device is not 'strong' enough for those apps? its just normal bus and train information apps....
and yes the tab is rooted

Downgrade back to EMUI 9 possible?

Hi All,
I was wondering whether its currently possible to downgrade back to EMUI 9? I received my Mate 30 Pro today (Model LIO-AL00), and it came with Android 10 out of the box. It has also applied a bunch of updates and I am now on 10.0.0.135.
I have tried the various guides to side-load Gapps via the backup method. Whilst the Gapps install, I can't open them. LZplay also doesn't want to start. I've tried all sorts of guides (including: https://www.gearbest.com/blog/how-t...ll-google-apps-gms-on-huawei-mate-30-pro-8639) but they all fail.
I also stumbled across the thread that talks about using Virtual Exposed (https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-30-pro/how-to/microg-t3977821). I can get Virtual Exposed installed, and the play store installed, but it doesn't open either.
So, I was wondering whether its possible (somehow?) to downgrade back to EMUI 9, so that I can use the LZPLAY method?
Thanks!!
Don't need to go back to 9. You can still get playstore on emui 10. I did it yesterday. Guide section install Google Play guide works. Rithina is op
Thanks for the quick response! Could you tell me which method you used, and what version of EMUI you did it on? Feel free to send me a private message if you don't want to share it publicly. Thanks!

I had seen that post, and I had tried it yesterday without any luck.
This morning I reset the phone and started again. Following the link from this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-30-pro/how-to/install-gms-google-play-store-t3992095
I managed to restore the HiSuite backup (only apps and settings)
Installed Google Apps fine
Started LZplay, but then get connection errors (see screenshots)
Do I need to VPN into China for this to work? Because the phone is trying to get to https://api.lzplay.net, which no longer exists.
It also tries to go to http://configdownload.dbankcdn.com/ which is also throwing an error.
Any ideas?

Lzplay is meant to not work. Now close it and install all the Google system apps and play store. Give them all permissions they ask for.

Hi Mate, I have done that, but none of them work. These instructions all follow the same pattern, and I have tried 4x different methods now. None work.
NOTE one thing: I cannot use HiSuite 9.0.3_300 to restore the LZplay backup. I am forced to use 9.1.0_309OVE because of the Android version on my phone. That is the ONLY thing that deviates from the instructions!
This one doesn't work: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ma...all-google-service-huawei-mate30-pro-t3992171

I can get the backup restored and all apps installed, but they just don't work . I made this video show the situation; https://youtu.be/BkAxzTzwPuQ
Should this still work with a later version of HiSuite?

So lzplay has admin rights? Have you tired istalling the Google apps again over themselves without uninstalling them first?

OK, I FINALLY managed to get it working. I followed these instructions:
Download and unzip the lzplay package (this contains the most important application data to be restored, please do not confuse with the newly downloaded lzplay package)
2, connect Hisuite (pc Huawei mobile phone assistant) click data recovery
3, find lzplay decompression package, only restore applications and data (only restore assistant application and application data, application data is the most important! application data is the most important! application data is the most important!) does not restore system settings!
4, restart the phone after data recovery
5, then download the corresponding version of the Google package and install (corresponding to the Google package and lzplay link below) Note: Install these Google packages based on all permissions
6. After the installation is complete, open the Google Service Assistant and activate the device manager.
7, restart the phone after activation is complete
8, open the settings drop-down to see if there is a google icon, if there is, then the installation is successful, if not, repeat the installation steps
MOST IMPORTANTLY: Open GMAIL first, register your account, and Google Play should then also start working.
The first couple of times I tried to either add a Gmail account or go directly to the Playstore, which didn't work. Now I opened Gmail, added my address, signed in and it all started working!
Thanks for all your input guys. Much appreciated!!

Is it possible to automate multiple Google Play app install?

I think this is basically general(not device specific) question so I am posting my question here.
I have Galaxy Note 10 Plus which got OS upgrade recently. I havn't upgraded my phone so currently my phone is at Android Q(10).
I don't have much time to do OS upgrade. More specific, I don't have time to do full wipe, manually download and flash firmware with Odin, install huge amounts of apps, configure those apps etc. Well, you might think: why don't use just OTA upgrade? That's because I don't trust OTA thing. It broke my previous phone few years ago. After that, I always flash firmware with Odin after doing full wipe.
The main problem is, I can't use 'Backup Apps' because it is OS upgrade and I don't think simply moving app data from Q(10) to R(11) is good idea. I have to configure everything one by one by my hand. That will consume a lot of time. Like I said, I don't have much time for doing this. I have to save some time.
If then, I might be able to save some time when installing huge amounts of apps from Google Play Store. I guess it is about ~80 apps. If I can automate those app installation, I might be able to save some time and use that time to configuring apps.
So here is my question: How can I automate app installation in Google Play Store? I've searched Google but only got disappointing result. 'Download those APKs and install them via ADB!', 'Emulate touch input in Google Play Store!' etc. are not what I want to do. I think there would be much elegant way to do bulk install of Google Play Store apps.
TL;DR
I want to know if there is simple way to install multiple(~80) apps in Google Play Store without doing these:
- Downloading those APKs and install them via ADB
- Emulate touch input with certain app
My guess is there is no other way than to download the apps in question and afterwards install them via ADB, what all can be done by means of a common Windows Powershell file.

Wait, can I download and install apps via ADB with single powershell script? If then, I can accept it if those app which were installed by ADB can be updated with Google Play Store...
If yes, can you give me hint about that script?
Don't have such a script at my fingertips ... And I have not the time to write it ... Think it shouldn't be too difficult for you to write it ...
