Is there anyway to install a rom on to the phone other than from a sd card. My phone won't recognize the sd card when I go to the boot screen ..

Not that I know of. The only ROMs that can be installed without the SD card are stock Motorola sbf. OpenRecovery on XT720 requires a working SD card.
We may be able to help debug your card problem, though. But I'm not sure what problem you're describing. Which boot screen?
The issue I'm having with my phone is when I power it up the the Moto symbol shows and that's it. So I wanted to reinstall another Rom.. When I try to get into the boot mode, I get an error that it can't read my sd card..

I don't understand what you mean by "boot mode"? Are you talking about Open Recovery or bootloader mode or normal boot or something else?
If you're talking about Open Recovery, have you tried taking the card out of the phone and mounting it on a computer to make sure that you have both of the OpenRecovery.zip and OpenRecovery directories?
Sorry, I don't know too much about the terminology when it comes to these things.. I'm trying to get to the bootloader screen .When installing the rom onto the phone what files do I need to have on the sd card ?

The bootloader is used to flash Motorola sbf files from your PC.
OpenRecovery is used to flash custom ROMs (Dexter's, khalpowers, MIUI, etc).
For OpenRecovery to work you have to have an OpenRecovery.zip and an OpenRecovery directory on your SD card (the zip and the directory have different files in them and they're both required). To boot into OpenRecovery hold volume up while powering on. OpenRecovery also has to be installed in the ROM, but since you've already flashed one it should be there.

I was running the Hypernonsense ROM and wanted to try a diff kernel. I flashed the newest faux kernel and now it's stuck at the first boot screen.
I do a battery pull and can voldown + power and get to the bootloader, but the problem there is that it sees the latest 3.32 P58IMG update on my SD card every time and won't let me select any other options. I can flash that over and over, but it's still sticking at the first boot screen, doesn't make it to the ROM's bootup screen.
Delete PG58IMG.zip.
Hang on, isn't Hyper-non-Sense ROM based on ICS? Faux's kernel's are only for Gingerbread based ROMs. Reflash the ROM to restore the 'stock' kernel.
help please

How do I get to a point where I can delete the IMG file or reflash...it's just "stuck".
take the sd card out,
boot the phone into the boot loader
go to recovery
it will start counting down or whatever looking for the sd card
put the card back in
it will see the sd card
it will continue on into recovery
connect to pc
mount usb in recovery
delete img file
reboot now if you like everything will be back to normal
* i believe this will also work if you put the sd card in after the bootloader is loaded before you go to recovery, the card just needs to be not present while the bootloader is loading. i believe it checks the card when it loads the bootloader, but after the bootloader comes up you can put the card back in then proceed to recovery

Ok, I was able to have it plugged into my laptop, voldown+power until I heard windows "bing" like a new device connected.
Then I went to a command prompt where I have adb installed and ran
adb devices
To make sure it was connected and it was. Then I ran
adb reboot recovery
And now I'm back to 4EXT recovery...phew, was getting worried. Gonna super wipe and install a new ROM.

Hi,
What is the problem?
Hello malybru,
Yesterday my device got stuck and I couldn't boot up and I could not access recovery.
I than found these steps that would allow a Mac user access to adb and fastboot.
[GUIDE] Set up ADB and Fastboot on a Mac easily (With Screenshots!)

Now I am all good again, but I was nervous at first cause it seemed like most of the tools are PC related.
Thank you
Hi Friends,
Sorry to bother u all. But my LG optimus 2x(P990) is stuck in LG logo after I flashed CM7.1. I also did install ROM manager and flashed CM7.1 through that. I followed all the steps carefully which were required to root the phone and then installing CM7.1 but after re-boot the mobile got stuck. I am able to goto recovery mod (power button+volume down) and trying to restore from there but i guess the phone is not able to read internal sd card. I would much appreciate if someone can help me fix the problem.

I know a lot of people swear by it, but ROM Manager is horrid. You're far better of manually flashing a zip through CWM, as ROM manager doesn't check to see whether the files it's downloaded are corrupt or not.
So what you will need is a zip file for the ROM you want. Take our your SD card, put it in a reader and dump that zip into the root of your SD card (not in a folder). Put the SD back into the phone.
In CWM somewhere, it will give you the option to select from the internal or external SD. Select the external one, then flash the zip file. That should put you back in the saddle.
Let me know if you need anything else. It sounds like ROM Manager has attempted to flash a corrupted ROM. If you can, avoid downloading ROMs via your phone - use the stablest connection you have available
Good luck!
lg logo problem,,
hey dude did you manage to fix this problem?? please help
Hello all,
I was doing some test with the new TrickDroid as beta tester and the last time i came into TWRP recovery I got screwed. I did only a Factory reset (my log says that) but my sdcard is formatted too). I tried to mount my sd with computer (that works) and tried to recovery my data with GetDataBack, but it's all gone.
I had to format my sd card, did that and placed a rom on it. But TWRP doesn't see the ROM file on my sd card. So I want to go to bootloader to push a ROM to sd card, cause I wiped all my data and I need a ROM to start.
But I can't close that fuuuu TWRP. I can't reboot, it says you have to install a ROM first (yeah but how, sd card formatted and it doesn't recognize files on it). I tried the power button + volume down button in TWRP to shut off my phone, but that button is used in recovery to lock your recovery.
At the end, how I can get my phone off and push a ROM? I'm on 70% battery, it will take 24h before that's gone.
EDIT: Oke I wiped my sdcard within TWRP and guess what? It sees my sdcard with the ROM I placed on it in mounted mode. That's not a wipe isn't it? It's only a bring back your sd card like before. Maybe I'm just a noob but I can't trust that TWRP recovery.

I am stuck in the booth loop (CM10 unofficial). Problem is that I have a radio file on my sd card. So when I try to boot into recovery (power + vol down) It takes me to HBoot, ask me if I wanna apply update. I cant get into recovery from that point whether I choose yes or no. I have also tried rebooting with usb attached, still cant get into recovery.. Any idea how can I boot into recovery?
Thanks

found the solution for now.. put the sd card in a card reader and deleted the radio. Would be nice to know if there is any other way of doing it..
I had to do the same thing. Unfortunately I haven't found a way. After I flash a radio I just delete it from the SD card just in case.
