[Q] Root formatted SD Card! Please help. - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I didnt know the root would format my SD card, so I foolishly used my main 16gb sd card to root it. My quick question is, is there any way I can get all my data back? I have many nandroid back ups but I wasnt sure if the nandroid back ups backed up the SD card or just the phone/rom image?
Cant recall what I would have used to back up my SD card

Oooooh, even if I dont get an answer to this, I just discovered that I made a back up of my SD card on my desktop in April of this year so im fairly peachy. Me from the past must have known future me was going to be stupid. Way to go me from the past. Im such a bad ass
Thank god..cause I had a lot of important data, photos, vids, and music on that card. Excuse me while I continue to pat myself on the back for being such a damn bad ass....

You could try a file recovery program on your SD card. It depends whether the data has been actually overwritten, or whether the partition has just been erased. If the data has been overwritten, it probably won't be possible to get it back this way, but if the card has just been formatted then the data will still all be there, it's just the partition isn't readable by the os, you could well be in luck!
Have a bit of a search around google, most recovery software costs about $40 usually, but you could probably find some from less err legal sources, if you looked hard enough.
I've used R-studio to recover data in the past, but it was a while ago and I can't remember how effective it was, but might be a place to start looking if you don't have any ideas.
Good luck!

Search for photorec. It has a program to recover data deleted from sd cards. It's opensource. There are versions for Linux, windows, and Mac. It will copy deleted files to a directory on another device.

sd card encryption?-

maybe someone can help me. over night last night my sd seem to become encrypted. when i woek up i noticed galarm wasnt playing my mp3's upon further investagation i discoverred that all the files are jumbled. when i put the sd card in my pc there is a .menc file. i believe this means its encrypted, however i did not tell it to do this. i am running natf 5.1 rom. sorry if this has been covered b4. im just freaking out becasue i dont know how to get all my files back. if anyone has run into this or has any idea how to fix it i will be forever in your debt.. thanks fatter
p.s. i do not nor have i ever told my phone to encrypt my files on the sd card
I dont' know if this is the problem but there is a encrypted SD card utility in the System menu. I would look in to that program maybe it got activated some how.
thats not encryption thats just sd card corruption
format it and if you have a backup on the computer
which is always a good idea copy it back on the formatted
card and softreset and it should be like it were before
the corruption

Formatting SD Card...

When I format my card by putting it in the slot my laptop has it doesn't wipe the ext partition... I say this because it's showing that the 2gig card is only a 1.27gig card. This can't be right?
Any help is appreciated.
What OS are you running?
Windows 7 (64 bit)
I don't have a card reader so I can't test it but try to right click on My Computer and select manage. Then go into Disk Management.
The problem is windows can't recognize ext partitions so it won't mount them
Otherwise look up a partition manager to run under windows. I always partition under linux or with dedicated tool you boot to off a CD. I am not sure a good one to recommend to run under windows. Maybe someone else can recommend one.
If you made a 4gb ext partition on an 8gb card, windows will now only see this as a 4gb card until you reallocate the ext partition.
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and I use Paragon Manager to modify the ext partitions. I am not sure if there is a legitimately free version of this program.
Thanks everyone. I'm downloading Paragon Manager now. I made my ext partition too big and want to put more music on there. I also feel like partitioned the card twice... I think I have an ext 2 & an ext 3 partition.
Again, thanks!

I use SdFormatter from this link: http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter_3/
Question:
Over the last few months I (like most people here) have tried several roms. I moved from the sdcard that came with the phone to an 8gb, no problems there.
The way I backup my sdcard is I make a folder on my desktop and literally just drag and drop the whole card over, hasn't let me down yet. When I switched I formatted the 8gb card and just copied my latest sdcard backup to the 8gb and everything works great. I am at the point where I have a lot of stuff on there from from things like apps I've uninstalled, etc. and I'd like to clean it up. I have everything I would want to keep backed up on my desktop.
So here is my question:
If I reformat my sdcard will the phone copy/install anything on the clean sdcard it needs to run?
If so then I'm thinking I could just copy what I want (nand backups, pictures, music, etc.)
Thanks

Yes and yes. I have cleaned house a few times by deleting everything off my 8gb card and bringing back just my pictures, music and backups.
If you are using an ext partition to store apps and want to delete this data, you will need to format this with a program that can handle this ext partition or the easiest way is through recovery (wipe ext partition). Otherwise, if you want to keep your apps on the partition you can just delete everything off the card through windows or even format it there.
Thanks Danknee!!
I thought that was the case but wanted to make sure.
I haven't had the need to use a2sd yet so that's not a problem.
One more question:
I've formatted and put everything I want to keep back. Should I just reboot or do I need to reflash DC!.0, the reason I ask is because there was literally nothing on the card after formatting (not surprising). So I put HTC Sync back in case I need it, will the phone build the file structure it needs as it needs it or should I do anything else at this point?
Thanks
You can just reboot. The SD card doesn't have anything on it that would be replaced by flashing anyway. Since you aren't using apps2sd, you could technically have two different SD cards that you swapped in and out. You would just need to unmount and remount them to prevent corruption during the swaps.
Apps save settings on the card, but these will be resaved when you use these apps again. Conversely, the apps you never use again won't be taking up any space now.

Awesome, thanks.
I totally understand what you just posted... So HTC ships these phones with SOME files that you can't get back by reflashing? (ie. HTC Sync) just curious

No, you can flash back to a stock sense ROM with no problems. What I meant was that you could actually use your phone with no memory card and it would be fully functional except that some apps couldn't save settings and data.
The SD card is completely optional and all the system files and system apk files are stored in your phone's internal memory.

Sorry for the confusion... I understand the phone can operate sans sdcard. if I'm not mistaken I believe I installed HTC Sync on my pc from my sdcard meanin that if I deleted it without backing it up I would have to (Jeez, I just realized what a waste of time this is, but I'm in too deep to stop) get HTC Sync from another source, ie HTC's website?
LOL yeah, you are probably right about HTC sync. I downloaded sync from the HTC website anyway (to make sure I had the lastest version). Besides that, I can't think of anything else on the stock 2gb card that is irreplaceable..

Can't read SD card

Normally this wouldn't be a problem, as I'm USUALLY good about backing my stuff up but...I hate to say I haven't lately and EVERYTHING is on my SD Card...
Long story short, I just flashed my TP2 back to stock from the SD card. Upon boot-up the phone no longer recognizes the SD. Put it in my computer and it asks me to format. Try my Touch Pro (1) to verify and it can't read it either.
I have a lot of cabs that I didn't get copied to my computer and my only data (contacts, etc) backup on this SD card. Does anyone know what I can do??? I"ve been trying to google it but am getting nowhere....

[Q] [HELP] Questions on creating second partition please

Hi, Still very new to all this. Was wanting to use link2sd app. Upon loading up the app and finding out more. It states "second partition not found, no sd card present"? So i'm reading all these threads on how to partition. Concern is, this guide for dummies writes that they want me to unmount sd and put in computer via usb or sd card reader? I don't have a sd card reader on laptop. Am i not able to leave it mounted in my phone while partitioning? This sd is internal and i don't see anything else under my sim card. Looks empty as if nothing is there. Is that where the external would go? Under sim card? Anyways, aside from that. I can't use CWM. Has no option for format sd card in 6.0.4.7. So was told to use Minitool partition wizard. Is this free? Says freeware. I'm guessing yes, though someone said it asked for license after partition. Shrugs.
My biggest concern is that even if i figure this out and get a second partition going..... What is going to be lost after format? My guess is everything right? So when i do a factory reset, will i still be flashed with beanstalk rom...Or wiill i have to start from stock again and update back to beanstalk? Sorry to sound stupid. Only been playing around with this phone a couple days. First smartphone and still very new to flashing, etc.
come on....60 views and not one helpful answer? surely someone has knowledge on this discussion. Please help! Does this phone ship with a sd card internally or no? I swore i used app2sd on earlier build before i return phone for a replacement. Why does it not work no longer? is there a specific build/rom that would allow me doing this? new to smartphones. be nice to the newb. thx.

Samsung SD card encryption not recognized

So I have a Samsung Galaxy s10+, I recently noticed that my SD card is not recognized by my phone as encrypted. All files are there just can't open anything. I've tried restarting the phone wiping cache partition, and a few free recovery software. I can see the files and file paths I just can’t Open them. I also notice that on the sd card there is no .metaEcsFile I'm not sure if I deleted that file but I do remember deleting a .metasomething file. But it was in my recent files and I'm pretty sure it was recently created date and time wise to when I deleted it. I'm not certain if that was the cause of the problem or not as I didn't check my SD card till some time after that file had been deleted. There are 2 things I haven't done that people have said work and I'm worried they will mess up the SD card and make any data recovery impossible. One of the things is to "encrypt" the SD card which would work if there was one key per device. But I'm not sure. The other thing is to copy data to a PC, format the SD card, encrypt the empty SD card, and put the files back on the SD card.
Many people said that updating to the October patch would fix the issue I was on march of 2021 security patch when this happened and updated to October of 2022 patch. There is another update however it says you can’t downgrade so I haven’t done it Incase I need to downgrade.
Any help would be appreciated very much.
Thank you.
Never encrypt SD cards... or backup data drives.
Personally I would reformat the card and start over, unencrypted. If you don't have the data backed up you're boned to a greater or lesser extent.
Sounds like you lost the folder encryption key. They may be able to be decrypted but it will be a pain. I think each folder uses a different encryption key although I may be mistaken.
Firmware upgrades and updates can and do break Samsung's. If you insist on doing either it's imperative to have all critical data redundantly backed up first, as it always should be anyway.
get a card reader for PC, use testdisk or runtime GetDataBack for (ex)fat and try to undelete .metaEcsFile
