I'd like some recommendations as to what everyone is using to maximize their battery life on this phone. I see a bunch on the market but not really sure which is worth it.

Juicedefender is a great one. I use it on all of Android devices.

It actually works? I'm kind of skeptical

In my experience, these apps only worsen the battery life, if they have any effect at all.
what is the reasoning behind what they do?

I usually give a ROM anywhere from 2-5 battery cycles before I truly judge battery performance.

I remember seeing a guide on how you should go about saving your battery by adjusting the voltages in a CPU app. searched for it and can't seem to find it

I got some tips in the hell fire Phoenix 2.3 thread. I've been back and forth either cpu tweaker as well and I've read some folks believe it's better.
I have no idea if any of this really helps phone stability, but it controls cpu to some extent depending on kernel.

The battery you save is miniscule, that and the increased frequency of SOD means you have no net gain.

Agreed - better to try different kernels and find which one works best with your phone.
