Split screen / Multi Tasking - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to run apps in a split screen environment? For example I want to watch a video in RockPlayer on the left half of my Xoom and surf on Dolphin HD on the right.
Since both applications scale to the current screen size if there was an application that would "trick" each app into thinking that the left half was 1 screen and the right half was another screen. Almost like a virtual environment.... like when you run Windows apps in Wine on Linux.

That would require extensive modifications to the framework, so could not be done from an app.
Notion ink did something like this on their Adam.

Definitely needs to have resizable windows to see two applications running side by side. Hopefully by ice cream.

Does Wyse Pocketcloud only support 4:3 resolutions ?

I downloaded pocketcloud (Free version) from the market few minutes back. It works fine, I could connect to my PC without any problems, I like the mouse implementation, and everything is good. Except the screen resolution. For some reason It only let me use 4:3 resolutions (1280x1024,1024x768,800x600 and 640x480). I looked everywhere in the settings of both Android and PC app, but there is no place to enable or set a wide screen resolution. When I use one of the above resolutions, PC screen shows up to the left and there is a huge black box on the right. I saw a couple of youtube videos where it runs full screen at wide screen aspect ratio. Why doesnt it work for me ? I would gladly buy the full version which is like $8, but only if it works in full screen mode.
Was not happy with resolution also with Wyse. Check out "2x" in market. This will go full tablet when opened, plus the free version supports multiple connection configuration unlike Wyse free.

No such complaints with the full version. Full screen works perfectly with Automatic resolution.

The paid version does support full screen resolution. Once I bought it, the PCs I connected to automatically went full screen, I didn't have to set the resolution. With the desktop client installed it is a super convenient RDP client. The only problem I have with it is that when using a USB mouse the right-click acts as a back button.

If you can pony up $5, SplashTop blows both 2X and Wyse out of the water. You get uber smooth remote desktop... of the likes you've probably never seen before.
Be sure to get the HD version...

But can it work behind a firewall (without port forwarding) ? I want something that can, haven't tested wyse completely but from the looks of it,seemed like it can.

As long as you install the desktop companion, Wyse will work behind a firewall. I saw in the comments of splashtop that it wasnt working behind a firewall but that "they are working on it." I also really like the way Wyse makes everything accessible from the on-screen cursor. Not sure how Splashtop takes care of things like right-click and drag n drop, but I like how Wyse does it. I also like that Wyse supports VNC for my Linux box.
I wish splashtop had a free light version so I could compare it without buying another RDP app. Although I see splashtop just lowered the price again, so I may have to give it a shot while it's on sale.

Pardon me if I'm wrong but isn't splashtop included by default on the Transformer? It's part of the MyCloud app.

Yes it is! Very little point in paying for something that Asus has given you for free.

Splashtop alternative

While the Splashtop app that comes pre-installed on the TF300 is pretty neat, it differs from Windows implementation of Remote Desktop in several ways. Most significantly to me is that the image that you see on the TF300's screen is a mirror of your PC's current desktop, including aspect ratio and screen resolution (scaled). In Microsoft's implementation of RDP, the remote machine is unavailable while an RDP session is in progress, which allows for the session to conform to the client machine's native screen resolution.
Is there an alternative to Splashtop that more closely resembles Microsoft's implementation of RDP?
I ask because my desktop PC sports two 1280 x 1024 resolution screens, and when I open a Splashtop session, not only do I see a single screen (scaled to squeeze a 1024 vertical resolution down to 800) but my second screen is completely invisible.
Look up teamviewer. I'm not sure how it compares but it's free so worth a shot. when I tried it, out had much more options than splashtop. My buddy who is a network admin recommended it to me.

+1 TeamViewer
Another +1. Desktops/servers... Works great.
if you are looking for something that functions like the Remote Desktop app in Windows, the only one that I've found that does that is 2X Client RDP/Remote Desktop. You don't install anything on a host pc like most of these other apps require.
I can use 2X to log into my work's windows server, just like if I was Remote Desktop on a windows PC. Navigating can sometimes be a little tricky, but the app includes a built in mouse emulator that makes things easier.
You can edit the settings for a computer in the Splashtop app to fit the resolution of the tablet (I use "Best fit to this device"). You can also switch between monitors by tapping 3 fingers (which is pretty damn difficult to get it to register at times); I switch between my monitors all the time. Only thing with multiple monitors is that it only adjusts the resolution of the primary display on your computer and not the others.
Thanks for all the tips, guys.

Remote Desktop tip

Type remote desktop in the search charm. Set it up with your desktop running windows 8. You will notice that your surface is running your windows 8 desktop just like its a totally different surface. You still swipe in on the left to pull up the charm bar but instead of getting info from your surface it pulls up all your desktop items. You can run all your x86 programs right from your surface. I just watched a mkv file on vlc player using my remote desktop it was a little sketchy but very usable. I just thought it was a good way to switch between the two. Im sure many have used this just thought some may like to know!!

Streaming games and watching movies at the same time?

I was wondering, is there a way to watch shows on my computer screen at the same time I'm streaming games to the shield?
I run a single monitor (1080p projector), I was thinking could the "steam big epicure/stream" run in the back ground while I make use of the desktop (ie: watch movies) ; or perhaps set it up in like a mock dual monitor setup? so that a "virtual monitor" would be where the steam big picture would run, leaving the main monitor free for me?
The streaming works by opening up the game and then just streaming your entire monitor, so it's not possible to have it run in the background. I've never tried mock monitors, but if it works the same way as just having dual monitors then it would kind of work.
I say kind of because what's running on the other monitor will continue playing, but all audio is streamed to your shield and there's no way of stopping that. Also, if you ever adjust the movie or otherwise make Steam or your game lose focus, the stream will stop.
I hear that people with true multimonitor setups, that shield streaming disables the other monitors any ways.
I found a work around, it's kinda dumb, but works.
In my case my monitor is a 100" projector, so great for movies, So I got my old blackberry playbook, installed plex on it, and connected it to a second input on the set up. So essentially I stream to the shield games and stream movies to my projector at the same time.
I mean it would be WAY better if I could just use my desktop at the same time using the shield but hey, it works.
I am no programer or anything, but, couldn't they make game streaming like a "media sever"? Something that runs in the background with no visual rendering on the severing computer?
first of all Hi everybody, im new to the forums, About not being able to run games in backround, Yes, that makes sense, but if you say it just streams your entire Monitor to device itself, do you think its possible to stream Desktop with icons and applications to the Shield?

Not the way the Shield Stream is set up. Steam's "Big Picture" has to be fullscreen and on top at all times, other wise it will cancel the stream. Which means your best option is Splashtop.
the only way we can do this, is by streaming Whole Desktop , to Shield or Android device . same way as Remote Desktop but only using Client and protocol used by NVIDIA GRID Software.

Is it possible to install Linux programs on Android

Hello folks,
I have a keen interest in making short movies of my outdoor sport/recreation, and I am looking to install some video editing software on my Android smartphone.
It is a Hauwei Ascend Y320 (4.2.2 Jellybean OS, dual-core processor etc).
Now Google Play has quite a few apps in the search result 'movie maker' or 'video editor', however there are dozens of clones on the stock Android movie maker app 'Movie Studio', which only allows very basic features, such as trimming, add one audio track, add photos to video collection etc.
But I need more features to efficiently edit my videos.
I have been using 'Movie Aid' and it is quite good, by far the best I have used. It has provision for trimming, transitions, photo, video, multiple music tracks, slow/fast motion, text, credtits, subtitles (including image overlay), and audio volume adjustment, etc.
I also use 'AndroiD StudiO' which is a video editor app, not a timeline style movie maker. It does splitting, trimming, filters, cropping, slow/fast motion, audio adjustment, add text to videos, extract video/audio, and much more...
Now that brings me to my question, can I install Linux OS on Android, and then install Linux programs (such as 'Openshot video editor')...
And if you think I should just edit videos on a computer... well I have a Windows 7 Acer laptop, however, as I spend a lot of time in remote ares on camping trips, I need to be able to edit videos easily on the go/in the field. (As when camping, I don't have access to mains power of, so I can't charge my laptop, once the battery runs flat).
Hope someone can point me in the right direction...
You can find a lot of projects "Linux on Android". f.e.
com.zpwebsites.linuxonandroid
Google "Linux for android"
In general it seems very hard to install a linux program in Android, though it is true that Android runs on a Linux kernel. The kernels are often modified to suit the needs of the type of machine they run on. A typical x86 or x86_64 processor machine is not too much different from another. So linux runs well on a great variety of desktops and laptops.
I've been trying to turn my tablet into a linux computer. One problem I have run into is that some packages are not able to run on the ARM processors. So this requires recompiling from source specifically for the tablet. And since my machine is too slow compared to my tablet, it runs out of memory compiling on it's own. So I try to cross compile which has it's own set of troubles. Notice it is the packages for programs that give the most trouble. The kernel does fine.
I have tried Linux on Android, but it complains that my kernel is too old. Your machine sounds pretty impressive so it might be able to handle it. Linux on Android is actually a way to chroot into Linux. It moves root from the typical android filestructure to a Linux Distro's filestructure and runs right off of the kernel running in Android.
