[TUTORIAL] How to add custom weather locations to the Sense Weather app! - Thunderbolt General

This is a tutorial on how to add custom locations to the Sense Weather app!
Step by step, pretty easy:
1. Download SQLite Database Browser (works with all OS')
2. Pull the following file off your phone (easiest way is using adb): /data/data/com.htc.provider.weather/files/WP_0409WWE.db
3. Open the db file in SQLite Browser.
4. Click on the "Browse Data" tab.
5. Next to "Table:" choose "locationlist"
6. Click on "New Record" on the top right, it should automatically create a blank one at the end of the list.
7. Double-click on the empty box under "code" and enter text in this format: NAM|US|<state>|<city> So, for example, NAM|US|NY|NEW YORK CITY (no spaces or line breaks after the block of text (you can have spaces in the city name))
8. Under "name", put the desired city name, such as "New York City" without any spaces or line breaks after the block of text.
9. Under "state", put the state name, such as "NY" in the same format as "name"
10. Under "timezone", put either 300, 360, 420, or 480 in, depending on what your timezone is:
Eastern time - 300
Central time - 360
Mountain time - 420
Pacific time - 480
11. Under "timezoneld", put either "America/New_York", "America/Chicago", "America/Denver", or "America/Los_Angeles" in, again, depending on the timezone you live in:
Eastern time - America/New_York
Central time - America/Chicago
Mountain time - America/Denver
Pacific time - America/Los_Angeles
That's it! Save it, push it back to /data/data/com.htc.provider.weather/files then reboot and you should be able to search for your town!
Special thanks to the guys who figured this out first (I don't remember your names, but thank you! )

finally, ive been looking for this!!

ahh this worked great thanks for the post

Ahhh good to see this. I remember this was the way to do it with Windows Mobile phones.

Thank you, very helpful

This didn't work for me for some reason. Do you have to put in the longitude and latitude in those columns as well? One thing I did put in that wasn't in your list was the country.

All I did was copy the settings from the closet locations to me and just changed the city name. There is no need to enter long. or lat. and all the cities worked for me.

Wow this is just great. Thanks

I am able to add places but when I use the place that was added (Staten island, NY) the clock is about 5 hours later. I double checked all the settings and info and all seems right..

That's pretty cool. Thanks!

I got it to work...BUT ----
I was able to go into the app and add my city and it's there now.
I still have the issue where it doesn't know I'm in that city. The widget still shows either a city that is about 10 miles or so away from mine or it just shows my state.
Any way to fix this?

I don't think this mod allows for your phone to find your location any better. It merely allows you to add your city to the list of saved locations.

This may be a silly newbie question, but does the phone need to be rooted in order to access the weather file? I am running the phone in USB Debugging mode, and I receive the following error when I try to pull from ADB:
C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools>adb pull /data/data/com.htc.provider.weath
er/files/WP_0409WWE.db
adb server is out of date. killing...

I answered my own question, yes, you need to root your phone to push/pull. Awesome tutorial, thanks!

Sounds interesting, looking forward to trying this out.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=310661
I tried that but I didn't get a url that he's talking about. Here is what I got:
http://www.accuweather.com/us/ca/sa...recast.asp?partner=accuweather&u=1&traveler=1
Also I don't know what to do with that url now! i dont understand
read this post. it's more accurate
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1307387&postcount=256
Ok I understand that url but i couldn't figure out where to put it
in your windows folder therse a file HH_weathercities
something like that
copy it to you PC, edit the file using notepad and add your entry in, than place it back into ppc windows folder
i did that and the city still doesn't show up even after soft reseting. So i copied the file back over and it indeed does have my edited city in there but my ppc doesnt recognize it in the software. Any ideas?
how come it's not recognizing it? Any ideas?
Got it..... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1321950&posted=1#post1321950

Not having much luck with the HTC plugin either, it reports temperatures and forecasts that are about 4 degrees lower than the actual. My experiences are described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=312569
Any Canadian or US users have similar observations? Does the HTC weather plugin work correctly for anybody?
Here's what worked for me:
Use active sync and copy the HH_0409_WeatherCities.xml file out of your windows directory to your pc and take off the read only attribute so you can edit it. Open it in notpad and find a city in your country and copy that line to to where your city would be. Then go to http://www.accuweather.com/us-city-list.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=0 and punch your city in and country in the international lookup box (ex. Grande Prairie, Canada), and you should get a link that ends similar to this:locCode=NAM|CA|AB|GRANDE%20PRAIRIE|&u=1
Now modify the line for your new city so its similar to this: <city name="Grande Prairie, CA" loca="NAM|CA|AB|GRANDE PRAIRIE" land="Canada"/> Then reapply the read only attribute and save back to your mobile device. This worked on my HTC Apache running WM6. Good luck!
Worked fine for me...
I'm using the 8925 (Tilt/Kaiser) and was able to add my city to the XML file, copy it back down, and have the weather display correctly. The instructions are a little confusing given the fact that the "NAM|US|VA|ALEXANDRIA" format you need to display your city will only display for cities outside the US. If you live with the United States, your best bet is to just use some trial and error knowing that NAM = North America and will not change, US = United States, VA = Virginia (for this example) and then you add your city to the end. The complete line entry should look like this in your XML file:
<city name="Alexandria, US" locationcode="NAM|US|VA|ALEXANDRIA" />
in my case, I had to add Charlotte, NC and the line I added looked like this:
<city name="Charlotte, NC" locationcode="NAM|US|NC|CHARLOTTE" />
Hope this helps...
One caveat about this weather thing I discovered. If your city code has spaces in them, you need to replace them with %20. Some of the cities already defined did not use the %20. In order to get salt lake city to work correctly, I had to escape the spaces with %20 and then the weather came up finally.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<locations>
<city name="Salt Lake City, UT" locationcode="NAM|US|UT|SALT%20LAKE%20CITY"/>
</locations>

I was able to cheat and find this code using "forecastfox", a firefox addon. A search for my home town in Canada turned up this:
Edmonton, AB = NAM|CA|AB|EDMONTON|
I did a search for your city (there are many San Diegos apparently) and all that came up was a code, give that a try. Use total commander to modify it right on your phone (http://ghisler.fileburst.com/ce/tcmdpocketarm.cab - save as txt, not unicode... or which ever keeps the file size close to the same as the original file *cough, make a backup of the xml file first*).
San Diego, CA = 92101
San Diego, TX = 78384
Good luck.

How to change default city on Titanium weather?
Thank a lot.
titan weather uses accuweather (well actually it is accuweather)
the code u need to use can be acquired from www.accuweather.com webpage, but i did the job for u and its "ASI|TH|TH017|BANGKOK" (type in without quotes).
Steps.
1. tap on titan weather
2. tap on menu and select options /setup and then tap ok
3. select zip or location code and then tap ok
4. now type in the code i gave u and tap ok and then exit setup by tapping cancel.
it should work now.
For anyone that has difficulties finding local code, you can read it from the url on www.accuweather.com. Just find your city and in url there will eg. http://www.accuweather.com/world-index-forecast.asp?partner=accuweather&locCode=EUR|CS|YI003|NOVI SAD
You can find more information on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3304751#post3304751 in the first post. You shuld only
use this url and add your city name to end of it: hadle.accu-weather.com/widget/hadle/city-find.asp?location=

asciper.
Thank you very much.

Edit Lockscreen Text - Not Carrier Text - CM7

Apologies in advance if I am posting in the wrong section.
I've been talking to some people over on the CM forums about this and we haven't found an answer yet.
If you look in my screenshot, right below the alarm, my name is on my lockscreen. This was put here using an old setting on CyanogenMod 6.1.2 on my HTC Evo 4g. You did this on CM6 by going to Settings > Location & Security. Then there was a checkbox to "Show Custom Message". You then put in text!
Does anyone know which file stores this value on CM7/Android 2.3? I've pulled the eri.xml file from my phone and I can edit my carrier text but I have not been able to find my name. I like being able to edit that text and I wanted to update it to something new but the settings no longer exist under CM7. Thanks for looking!
I have found a ton of utils for editing carrier text but nothing for the text pointed to in the red arrow.

re
Not the answer you are looking for here but wouldnt it be easier and less annoying and stressful to just flash back to the rom where you could change it, change it to what you want and then flash back ?
that is if i am understanding you correctly and your name shows up now of course with the new rom...
i would think if you changed your name to whatever you wanted then you could go back to the new rom and it would appear the way you want it.
I'm going to give that a try tomorrow. Not sure if it sticks through an upgrade or not but worth a try. Im just curious at this point what confit file it is. Wish there was a filemon or similar tool for Android. Although, if can dump all the files off the phone before and after I should be able to do comparisons....hrm. Project for tomorrow.
OK, finally took the time to work on this a little further.
I reflashed CM6, booted and confirmed there was no lockscreen text. Took a nandroid and copied off the system.img
I then put a lockscreen text in - used a custom phrase that would not be in any of the config files normally. Rebooted, took a nandroid and copied off this system.img.
Extracted both system.img files using unyaffs.
I did a binary and CRC comparison off all the files, no differences. So apparently this setting is stored somewhere else. Hrm......
AHA. Found the little bugger finally.
Had to pull the data.img and extract that. The setting is located in
/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
lock_screen_custom_msgTESTTEXT
lock_screen_show_custome_msg1
These are the two options that I found. So, now to see if I can safely edit that DB file and modify the text on CM7. I already have the text on my screen so the data fields are in the DB file already so I suspect I can just edit that file and then replace it on my phone.
Hm. Editing is no good. Blew away all my settings and I not longer can enable any lockscreen.
Hah. Got it! Using ADB works. Instructions:
adb shell
sqlite3 /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
.tables (you should see a secure table listed)
.header on
.mode column
select * from secure;
Now scroll through the results. Find the "lock_screen_custom_m" item under name. Note the ID number to the left. Write the ID number down.
update secure set value='your custom message here' where _ID=NN;
NN is the ID number you wrote down.
.quit
Reboot your phone.
There you go, just in case anyone else is interested.

Nice find!
I used a derivative of your method to reset the alarm notification on the GB lockscreen when the buggy POS alarm app G-Alarm left it there after removing all the alarms and uninstalling it.
That one is in system instead of secure, and it can be set to a blank string per http://developer.android.com/reference/android/provider/Settings.System.html#NEXT_ALARM_FORMATTED to clear it
Neat! Glad it could help someone out.

Yup, much appreciated! Also great to learn how to edit databases on Android.
Also, I didn't have a USB cable so I did it with the terminal editor. For convenience (i.e. having a real keyboard) I used Webkey for PC access to my phone and its built-in terminal editor to make the changes.
That sounds painful!
I don't know where I read the guide, but definitely use ADB. With ADB you can basically connect to the shell on your phone from your PC through a command prompt. Makes doing this sort of thing MUCH easier!

[VIDEO GUIDE] Wireless file transfer between Android and PC (FTP Method)

*** Update ***
The app used in this guide been removed from the Play Store by the developer.
However, he has kindly granted me permission to share the apk with you
directly. You can find it attached to the bottom of this post!
************
Hi everyone,
I've put together an 8 minute video guide that demonstrates how (using an FTP
server) you can transfer files between your Phone and a computer over a WiFi
home network (natively through Windows explorer).
I've tried to make it fairly beginner friendly and its available in all resolutions including 1080p:
You can view the video full size here: http://youtu.be/5EV9PfPXbz8
HELP & FAQ:
Applying the tutorial to an older Windows OS:
Windows Vista:
As far as I can recall, the method shown in my video should be virtually (if not completely) identical for Windows Vista Users. If you think I've missed something though, please let me know and I'll update accordingly.
Windows XP:
Mapping the Android FTP Server location in Windows XP should also work just fine. However, I don't think you can access the "add new network location" wizard in the manner shown in the video at 03:30 (I could be wrong). From memory - I believe you need to do the following instead:
a) Open 'My Computer' from the start menu or desktop shortcut
b) From the 'TOOLS' menu select 'MAP NETWORK DRIVE'
c) Click the link "Sign up for Online Storage or Connect to a Network Server"
d) Select "Choose a custom Network Location"
e) I think this should bring you pretty much back in line with the video at 03:45
Mac OS:
I'm not a Mac expert, but perhaps you can try the following...
Follow the video up to the point where I switch over to my PC (03:15), then try this on your Mac:
a) Press Command+K to launch the “connect to server” dialogue
b) Enter the Wifi/FTP URL from the phone app into the address field
c) Click on the “+” icon if you want to save as a favourite
d) Press Connect
e) Enter your Username and Password when prompted & press connect again
f) You should then be able to browse the contents of your phone as a local folder.
g) Rejoin video at 06:50
Web Browser:
Although the aim of this video is to avoid having to use a web browser, you can enter the 'WiFi URL' generated by the Android App (visible at 03:05) into the address bar of any FTP enabled web browser (eg. Firefox / Internet Explorer).
TROUBLESHOOTING
Worked Initially, then stopped:
If you were initially successful in getting everything to work, but some time later you find that you can't connect - this may be related to your router's DHCP configuration. Some routers allocate IP addresses on a dynamic/time lease basis. If your router is configured in this way, your phone's IP address may change every time it re-connects to your local network (thus invalidating the WiFi URL that we copied from your phone during the tutorial). If this is the case, you'll need to refer to your router's documentation and try to assign a static IP to your phone.
Error 550 (CHMOD):
If this error crops up immediately upon trying to access a location on your phone (eg. a sub folder), you have probably entered an invalid path in the "Stay Within Folder" field during the app configuration. Double check the path that you entered and make sure that you didn't accidentally deleted the preceding slash (/) too.
If this error only appears when trying to delete or move files, it could be a couple of things. Do check the steps mentioned in the above paragraph, but also remember what I mentioned in the video about avoiding paths that act as a shortcut to another folder. For example, don't enter "/sdcard" in the "Stay Within Folder" field during configuration of the app. On my phone, this results in read only access to the MicroSD card. I found that I needed to specify the full path (eg. "/mnt/sdcard") to obtain full Read/Write access.
Invalid Handle Error:
This error may occur when trying to move or delete files from your phone. If so:
1) Double check (in the FTP server setup on your phone) that you haven't added a trailing slash (/) after the path specified in the "Stay Within Folder" field.
2) You can also get this error if you start the FTP server, then launch an app that needs access to the folder containing the files you want to move or delete (eg. The Camera / gallery app). Simply exiting the app may solve this. If not:
a) exit your app
b) Stop the FTP server using the home screen widget
c) Restart the FTP server using the home screen widget
d) try again before launching your app.
No WIFI URL:
If you start the FTP server but don't receive a Wifi URL, double check that your phone's WiFi connection is turned on. This may sound obvious, but it could be an easy one to overlook.
Firewall Issues:
If you're convinced that you have everything set up correctly but you simply can't connect to the server - a firewall could be the cause of your problems..
If you're not familiar with firewalls, you may want to disconnect from the internet and temporarily disable your firewall completely to see if this solves your problem. If it does, at least you'll have a starting point. If not, you may need to look a little closer at any filtering rules on your router.
Unfortunately I can't help troubleshoot every possible combination, but generally speaking, you should double check that your internal network is configured as a trusted zone and that there are rules allowing (or no rules blocking) traffic on the required port ip / address etc. For example, 'ESET Smart Security' users will probably want to pay specific attention to the 'Network Filtering' options.
Good luck.
Bugsy.

I'm not a Mac expert, but perhaps you can try the following and let me know if it works?...
Follow the video up to the point where I switch over to my PC (03:15), then try this on your Mac:
a) Press Command+K to launch the “connect to server” dialogue
b) Enter the Wifi/FTP URL from the phone app into the address field
c) Click on the “+” icon if you want to save as a favourite
d) Press Connect
e) Enter your Username and Password when prompted & press connect again
f) You should then be able to browse the contents of your phone as a local folder.
g) Rejoin video at 06:50
I hope that works...
Cheers,

Regarding AOKP 4.0.4, are you using a Galaxy SII / Nexus? If so, I think I've heard about people having trouble with widgets before. I think you have to drag them out of the widget draw instead. Does that make sense?

No I'm using a sensation. Tried adding it by the widget menu and it didnt work. Then I rebooted to get the widget to show in the widget drawer so I can drag it but it didn't show up.

Hmm.. In that case I'm afraid I really don't know. Unfortunately I've never tested AOKP, so I don't have any first hand experience to go on.
Off the top of my head, my suggestion would be to try widgets from several other market apps and see if any of them act in the same way. I realise that won't solve your problem, but it could go some way towards establishing the source of it.
Best of luck,
Bugsy,
Nice one thx buddy

You're welcome. If you happen to find another FTP server that comes with a widget though, would you mind letting me know? I couldn't find one anywhere.

Thanks for your suggestion.
I’ve actually used AirDroid before, but while it is a great app in its own right - its file management capabilities only seem to go as far as letting you export stuff from your MicroSD card in a zip archive.
The method I show in the video is certainly more cumbersome initially (hence the reason for making it), but I find the end result more functional for simply copying/moving/deleting files.

Tried some of the free ones on the market but still no luck of finding one with a widget. Will search tomorrow for paid ones there must be one with a widget! haha
Great Guide!
Thanks Bugsy......
Thanks for the awesome guide I was looking for something like that to use.

Please let me know how you get on. I don't have a mac to hand, so it would be good to know that I'm not adding useless info to the FAQ
