I'm being driven nuts trying to make any use of bluetooth on my new Nexus S 4G. I'm running the stock firmware, though it is now rooted. The same problems were present before I rooted it.
No matter which computing devices I try to pair nor how many times I try to re-pair, I get "paired but not connected." This means several things I need won't work, such as GPS sharing or file transfer. I've tried 2 different Android tablets, another Android phone, 2 different Windows Mobile phones, a desktop and a notebook with exactly the same results.
The NS4G will pair with my car, but it will only transfer phone numbers, not street addresses, email addresses, web sites, or notes. Names are transferred as all "first name" (the full name or company name appears in the first name field), irrespective of whether there's even a first name listed at all. This means I can't ever sort by last name or company in the car, which I often wish to do. My primitive Windows Mobile phone can handle all this with no difficulty at all. The "Car Home" interface won't auto-start no matter what I do.
I'm having difficulty believing that Bluetooth functionality could possibly be this lousy in any modern device, especially one that works so well in every other way. Can anyone help me track down whether I'm somehow doing something wrong, or if I need to give up on the phone and swap it for something else?

I'm not having problems. I've sent files between phones via bt, used head sets, and played games with an emulator and wii controller. I've never had the need to transfer contacts. Try reboot the phone and or make the other device go into forced pairing mode. Maybe you're doing something wrong. On the other hand, I never can connect the phone to my macbook. It's such an ordeal. I've tried xp too and never had success. Im probably doing something wrong.

I downloaded it and was able to use it to transfer a file between the Nexus S and an Android tablet. This does not, however, appear to have fixed anything else. Settings still shows "paired but not connected," no other bluetooth utilities work, and I'm still unable to transfer contacts to the car.

In short: Is it possible to cluster, network or push device output from one device to another, share storage devices and network/gps interfaces?
The long version: I have been wanting to build an in-car device that would store media and act as a gps and what not, but haven't found a way that I want to implement it yet. I was thinking if I found a x86 port of android, got most of the voice stuff working, I could have a headless device that I could store music on and use as navigation. I know the phones are capable of that, but if I want to keep say 500 gb of music on me, how does one do that?
My thoughts were if it were possible to either cluster or network an installed android powered unit to an android powered phone, I could always have network access from the unit in the car and share the gps from the phone, or have the phone access the storage from the device (not through dlna, but the music app seeing it as physical storage) and allow me to push the output from the in car device to the phone and let me interact with the system how ever I need to I could accomplish a form of in-car entertainment.
I figured that there could be apps written that would let the in-car device act as a headless unit, with its only interface being audio, it could store navigation directions/maps and what not, so if I didn't have the phone that day, I could still navigate to where I needed to. The phone and the device could constantly be in communication with each other if the car was parked by a wifi hotspot or something, so if I chose to navigate somewhere when I was at home, the car would already have the directions. I could also have it pull any media changes through wifi, and always have an updated media library.
I know the phones are fully capable of doing this, but for most of it, you have to have a window holster for the car to use the gps, and wires running for audio and charging and what not, but if there were a way that the in-car device could be hardwired to the audio system and left alone, the phone could stay in my pocked, be linked via bluetooth and I could have a small button-pad or something that would allow me to initiate google voice search, control the media player and interact with navigation. The whole thing with linking the phone and device together would be so the mobile network could be shared between android devices and the incar device could pull the information it needed. The thought of the display sharing was in case I needed to interact with the incar device.
I know what I am going on about is specific to me, but my thoughts behind it were if it were possible to do at least the network sharing (with out tethering or mobile hot spot blah blah blah) that android phone and tablet owners could do the same thing. They could share their mobile network through their tablet and have a tablet that would be always connected, would share mailboxes with the phone and basically act the way the Blackberry playbook is proposed or how the Palm Foleo was supposed to work. If the devices had a network ability of some level, the tablet could pull text messages, email messages, contacts or any other sync-able item.. That way, this wouldn't just be done for my benefit, but it would take tablet and phone owners to another league. Two devices that share the same information from one source and don't have to sync with the same servers twice. It would take a lot of redundancy out.
I hope you guys can see usefulness in my idea, and can shed some light for me.

Does android have anything that would work like blackberry bridge between two android devices?
Droid Vnc server and androidvnc works fine for screen sharing. What I really like is the hpc aspects to CPU cycle sharing over wifi/nfc. Really interesting possibilities.
What I am looking for is to have the ability to use two separate android devices, but have them communicate via wifi/bluetooth or what ever and act as the same device in the sense that when the device with the data plan gets a text message or phone call, the notification goes through the other device that would be physically docked to audio equipment or what ever...
I have a Droid X, Droid Incredible, Droid Pro and a first gen Droid laying around.. Currently the Droid Pro is my in use phone.. The rest are just laying here. I want to be able to dock one of the others in my car, turn the GPS on, link it to my droid pro and have the other phone use the droid pro's active data connection for guidance/searches etc, and it would be docked to car audio, so it would need to access the pro's sd card, and have access to the pro's phone audio, or the ability to route calls from the pro to the other device via bluetooth or whatever, not by call forwarding.. This way it would be a sort of infotainment/telematics system..
Think of the possibilities this would open up for android tablets etc. If You could reply to text messages from your tablet because the tablet is linked/bridged to the phone in your pocket... That would make these tablet/laptop combos more appealing because it would the perfect convergence between tablet and phone.
Oh, and I guess, the other thing is that I have multiple cars, so one device would go in each car, and then when I got in the car, the one in that car would link with my phone, and everything would be the same, car to car, or device to device...

I have a 2011 Jeep Grand Chreokee. When I first got the phone, it paired fine and I was able to make and receive calls through the BT. I had this setup for about 1-2 days. I then rooted the phone with the stock ROM only removing bloat ware...now I cannot connect via bluetooth back to the car. It seems to connect then disconnect me right away. Ideas?
I know this seems obvious but have you tried unpairing and repairing the phone to the car? Sometimes bluetooth can get fidgety and most of the time it requires you to repair the device. In my experience that generally solves the issues I have had with bluetooth.
Any time I have factory restored my phone I have had to repair it to any Bluetooth devices it was once connected to. Not sure if the Bluetooth address changes for the phone or not on a reset or ROM change, but it seems to be the case. My Infiniti G37s has Bluetooth and I experienced the same issue as you, pair it again and see if that helps.
Thanks for replies...I tried to repair about 6 different times...same result. It seem that the phone and audio connections both connect for about 2 seconds, then the phone disconnects.
Funny, I wanted to try this but kept forgetting. So I just went down to my garage and tried it, and it paired successfully on the first try. Tried making a call via number/phonebook and it all worked.
I'm rooted running Das BAMF 1.3, and paired it with a '11 Sonata Limited.
So I got it working...but without the phone book downloaded. The issue is in fact when it tries to download the phone book. Need to get another phone loaded up with my contacts and do a sync to get phone book loaded to car.

Did you do anything to get it working?
When the device asked me to allow connection to download the phone book, I declined, only then would it pair properly.
I think I figured it out, I have the Infiniti G37, when I rooted & re-paired the Bluetooth, somehow I ignored the question when it popped up asking to "allow" or "deny" the connection.
Yesterday during the whole 4G fiasco, I reflashed & had to re do everything this morning, when I paired my BT, it asked me whether to allow & this time I clicked allow & my BT connects & stays connected fine now.
My question is, is there a way to delete the BT pairing on the phone without having to completely wipe the phone with a reflash?

I believe the issue is just with the MyGig radio on the Chrysler products. I have a SRT8 Magnum with the MyGig and allowing it to download the address book "Breaks" the B.T. connection. I don't know what the issue is? Perhaps too much information being sent to the MyGig and it "locks up"?
I also have a Ford Focus for a daily driver and allowing it to download the Address Book over the phone has no such issue.

It does it on my aftermarket Kenwood double-din unit, too. I've seen it happen on several Ford units too.

I updated my 430N radio with the latest firmware update and phone book downloaded and BT is working without getting disconnected.

Thanks for that info. Although I can't do it as I have the "MyGig" retro-fitted into my 07 SRT. So, if I apply the "official update" I will lose GPS time and a bunch of other things.
But, nice to know it works.

I read some articles, thay said mango will bring bluetooth pictures and music file transfers (phone to phone). But now I have Mango and can't see any file transfer options. Am I doing someting wrong, or there is just no option for this?
At the other hand, is there any application who is able to BT file transfer? Is realy that hard to write such as applicatin?
Remember that the version of mango we have is not feature-complete.
I doubt that this is something we'll see built in to the OS itself.. but if they made it available in the API, someone can write an app that will do it.
Unless you're within 30 feet of the person you're trying to send the picture to, it wouldn't have much of a practical use when the device can sync wirelessly with a computer over a wifi network, which is much faster than bluetooth to begin with.
BT is usable spacialy in environments where computer and wireless is unavailable ag. partyes, hollyday atc... So I ment BT transfer phone to phone, not phone to PC.
I successfully paired my 16gb motoactv with my laptops Bluetooth connection. I was then able to play music from the device through my laptop. The pairing and connection was simple and strait forward . I accidentally hit 'forget' on my motoactv device and I went to pair again so I removed the device from my laptop and went on to pair. This time around the two devices will not discover one another.
Each device, my laptop and motoactv will discover and pair with other devices (headsets, car head unit) just not with eachother. I tried all i could think which was uninstall all bluetooth drivers and bluetooth software and did a re-install. I rooted and rebooted in recovery. Did a full wipe and then installed a downloaded and installed 16gb stock rom and still it just will not discover. It is acting like it is still paired therefore not discovering one another. I feel the issue is more with my computer. I feel like the computer did not 100% get rid of the pairing information but i am not sure. I base that on the fact I did a complete wipe of the data and installed a fresh stock rom. How would I be able to re-pair these two or make sure the pairing was completly uninstalled on my laptop. Hp Pavillion dv6 win7
I dont get how this device can pair without a hitch the first time around and the second time around it wont even discover one another.
More small details, I was in the process of rooting the device - would that affect bluetooth discovery. Something I could figure out quickly but I doubt it. The motoactv also does not discover on my bluetooth enabled ipad. Not sure if it could or should discover. At this point im just doing trial and error to really figure out this odd problem,
Hi, you should try and look if your laptop has "Enable this device to be discovered" or something like that in the bluetooth options. Basically, you need to make your laptop discoverable. Then go to phone setup on motoactv and set it up. After that you should be able to see your laptop in the wireless menu in the motoactv and connect to it. I also use my motoactv to play music through my laptop speakers.
I have been experiencing issues connecting to devices over Bluetooth. Sometimes it just works, other times it doesn't work at all, and some times it kinda works but not right.
All of these issues are resolved by restarting the phone, but that isn't a solution because the issue comes back.
3 Devices I have been having issues with
1. S Pen - Sometimes it won't connect to the phone, I get an "S-Pen Missing" message and it will not connect. If I t ry to connect to it manually via nRF Connect (The Nordic Semiconductors Bluetooth App) it tells me that the BLE device has a GATT error. It happens semi-randomly but I can always make it happen by doing #2
2. Car Stereo - This is the weird one, it will connect and play music, but it will not do "calls" if I connect to Discord it won't recognise the car as a Bluetooth device it can route to.
3. Raspberry Pi - This one it appears it will connect to ONCE, and then after a disconnect it will not connect again.
Again, each of these can be fixed by restarting the device, but they happen again after a while. The pen & RPi use BLE, I don't know what the car uses for calls.
Turn off global power management completely in Device Care.
Network reset, reboot and clear system cache from the boot menu.
Ok, I've done a network reset, and cleared the cache partition. I checked Device Care for something like global power management, and I couldn't find anything. Most of the pwm settings are off except the "optomise daily" setting.
I'll let you know later if I have the same issue again.
These, this is a N10+ running on Pie.
To check if you have disabled global power go to Developer options>standby apps, all buckets should show as active otherwise power management is enable.

Are those the only three devices you connect via BT? What other apps do you use that need to use BT (i.e. Galaxy Wear, Apple Music, etc.).
You mentioned "Nordic Semiconductors Bluetooth App." I looked it up. Why do you need a third party generic BLE connecting app? It seems to me that could be the problem. You shouldn't need a third-party app to connect your BLE devices. The S22U's native pairing will work with any BT device that adheres to BT standards.
Try uninstalling the nRF Connect app and see what happens.
The only other Bluetooth devices I have are other in-house hardware, running on SiliconLabs BGM13P chips or NRF52840 chips...
The NRF app isn't a replacement for your bluetooth pairing app, its a debugging app... it can connect to BLE devices and show their GATT profiles, update devices that have Nordic's OTA update code and copy a devices GATT profile to act as a BLE Server.
We use it for testing and debugging.

Ok. I recommend uninstalling nRF Connect anyway. If anything, to rule out the app. How old is your car and the Raspberry Pi? Even though BT 5.2 is backwards compatible, sometimes older BT devices won't work with newer devices. That doesn't account for the S Pen issue though.
I uninstalled nRF connect, and changed all the settings you both recommended. Exactly the same behaviour when I went to leave work. My car stereo would do music but not calls, then when I restarted my phone, it worked. Then when I got home, my S Pen would not connect to my phone, then I restarted my phone and it worked.
Its not a problem of not being compatible, its a problem of something stops working.
Please also note that these devices worked fine together in the past. I am concered that it is either a change made by an update or a Bluetooth chip that is faulty....
OP- Have you debloated at all and if so maybe you've removed something relevant that might be causing these issues?
No, stock image, no OS modification beyond the things that Samsung offers (GoodLock and Stock customisation)
I have our in-house apps for interacting with our equipment (over Bluetooth) installed, but #1 they shouldn't affect anything if they are not open and #2 they don't do this to ANY of our other test equipment.
I would just like to say, that I appreciate the assistance that you are all offering! I have used many forums over the years when looking for support on things and I rarely find a place that is more ready to try and help than XDA forums!

I've seen the issue of the spen disconnecting but only a couple of times and the issue worked itself out within a couple of minutes with me not having to do anything.
I've also have had a couple of wonky issues when connecting a new Samsung phone to my car. I've narrowed down my issue to the fact that when I transfer my data & settings via Samsung smart switch, it includes the details of my Bluetooth pairings. To fix it, I have to go in and delete my Bluetooth phone settings from the car and from my phone and re-pair them.

As cool as I think Smart-Switch is as a program, I actually never use it when moving from one phone to another. The junk that Google drags with me from one phone to the next is already too much, I like to use a new device as a chance to do some housecleaning. So no old-data oddities here.

Hmmm.. Ok. You're probably right about the suspect causes. I know there is a code you can dial to get into diagnostic mode, I just don't know what it is.
The only other option you can try (as a last resort) is to factory reset it. If it is update caused, a factory reset MAY fix it. If you take it to a service center, send it in for repairs, or do a warranty replacement, they're going to factory reset it, or have you reset it.

I'm not entirely sold on the idea that it is a hardware fault. It could be a hardware limitation; meaning you cannot connect to more than a certain number of devices simultaneously. I don't know how many BT devices you can connect to at once. I know at least two simultaneous connections (I've only had two simultaneous connections at a time).
You said you have other BT devices in your house other than those three your having issues with. How many are there? How many are you connected to at any given moment?
Is it possible that you have too many simultaneous connections?
When you try to connect to your car.. Did you check under BT connection (your vehicle) to make sure both audio and calls are checked..

Yes, and I've disconnected, reconnected and even unpaired and re-paired the phone to the car.

Unless having multiple connections causes the BT to fail completely, no. Even after turning the car off and walking away, it still will not connect to the S Pen. The only BT devices I use with that phone regularly are:
S Pen, Car (Music & Calls)
At work I develop devices that use Bluetooth and I sometimes connect to them, but only ever one at a time.
