[Q] Wiping Nexus S and installing Stock 2.3.4 ROM - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All,
disclaimer: I am a n00b.
I have bought a used Nexus S a while back with the Modaco ROM and ClockworkMod. I now want to wipe it clean, and go back to the stock google ROM 2.3.4. I have looked high and low, but can't seem to find instructions on how to do that!
All i've found was high level instructions: wipe phone, boot from recovery, load new rom..
Can anyone point me to a detailed guide on how to do so?
Thanks

Hmm i want to know 2 how to do that

Well I was hoping I would get the stock rom link in the instructions, but I also found links to the rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056062

I believe you can flash stock roms from the Rom Manager app.
I'm not sure about this, but I think the stock rom might replace clockworkmod with the stock recovery when you reboot.
Also unlocking/locking the bootloader wipes everything (including the sd-card so copy everything you might want onto your computer).
You can also do it using a program called odin. Search for the thread on that.

WTF!?
I just downloaded 2.3.4 and installed it via ClockworkMod, my phone never lost any of the settings/data/apps and in the status Android Version reads 2.3.4. I'm amazed! i thought i'd have to reinstall everything, re-set everything up... what am i missing here?!
I mean not that I am complaining! this saves me a whole lotta work, but can someone explain what i'm missing?
(I didn't wipe the phone, just installed the ROM)

I got a quick quite similar question, i am on a 2.3.4, but i want to go back to my oh so awesome nscollab, is there any problems or just flash?

just flashing was okay for me, i didn't wipe so never lost any of my apps/settings. YMMV

[q] need help

okay i did the 4 step root. the easy root, i have the ota update. still on android 2.1, i have completed it, it showed me the new "quietly brilliant" screen and i have new apps now, no super user app though. so i tryed downloading apps that take a root, and it says "your app will be downloaded" it doesnt show it in the notification bar, i have to go back to the app. and then it just says downloading but never finishes, after i did the root i never flashed a custom rom or any of that, i didnt think i had to? any help? if i need to flash a rom can someone give a link to any, maby cm6? idk, but it wont let me download any aps. i also tried going to 4shared and it wouldnt download those either. you can email me if you like.
okay nvm, after i installed the rom "finisher" it fixed all my problems, IE wifi hotspot not working and no icon showing i had total root. all fixed now, one more quick question, i want to install the new 2.2 froyo leaked, not the ota one, will i lose my "free" wifi"" and also how do i need to go about doing that? steps? system reset, flash new RA_recovery. clear all cache and then flash the rom?

I used this:

That's a rooted version of the official 2.2 update, so you will still be able to get wifi tether. Just follow the steps (ASSUMING YOU HAVE AN EVO, you never did specify but it's the only phone that had a 2.2 update recently that runs CM6 AFAIK). This assumes you already have a rooted phone with NAND unlocked already.
lol read my user name over there <---<---... lol yeah like i said i have the rom finisher, its on youtube, pretty BA... and i obvously have nand unlocked sense i have a different rom on my phone, right? lol
hey i dont have the new base band, and i know i need to download the wimax and the new radio after i put the rom on my phone, but which zip file do i use for my rom the V3? thats under the MIRROR folder? or the zipped one that is before the wimax and radio zips? (its the first zipped file under his instructions)

[Q] PLEASE HELP!!! Cannot Boot Nexus S!!

Hi everyone,
I'm sorry I'm quite new to this, and I'm afraid I've gotten myself somewhat stuck with my Nexus S. Yesterday I managed to root it, install superuser, as well as clockwork mod. Today I wanted to try a new rom and after some attempts, it seems I no longer have any working roms on my phone. After much searching with no luck, I turn to you guys for your expertise.
So I am able to see fast boot upon pressing the volume up and power buttons, and am certainly able to choose recovery and get into clockwork mod. Within clockwork mod I can mount USB storage, so I can transfer roms to the internal SD card. I've tried 3 or 4 roms, some say they install correctly, others not, and after trying to boot after any installation I simply get stuck at the google screen with the lock image at the bottom. The only things I have "deleted" is wiped the data and cache. I have no idea, but I think I may have erased the bootloader image or something else that I should not have that is required.
I have a i9020a model (non-4g model I believe), can you pleeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaassee help me!! I just want to get back to gingerbread 2.3.6, and my phone back up and running the way it was. I've become quite nervous after some searching with some saying a resistor mod is needed on the hardware!!
Your okay cause you can get into fastboot and recovery so don't worry. Maybe the rom you downloaded is not for your phone. Did you make a nandroid backup before flashing the rom? If yes then go into backup and restore from clockwork recovery to go back to stock.

If you can get to recovery, just flash the stock image FOR YOUR PHONE. Then you can go through and reroot..don't worry, you'll get the hang of it.

So my phone is not "bricked" as they say?? I'm not in big trouble?
I did not make a nandroid backup What kind of image am I looking for and how do I install it on the phone? I know my phone is of the variant i9020a, but how am unsure of how much more specific I should be looking for.
Looking at the following post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664.
Should I try installing the Android 2.3.6/GRK39F/UCKF1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader option?
Choose the latest 9020a version of the FULL ROM, which is what you have already have eyes on.
I've tried installing the file I mentioned above, but I get a status 7 error when trying to install, and the install is aborted.
Could I get some more assistance please? Can anyone point me to a correct, full rom? Or perhaps I'm installing it incorrectly, could someone be so kind to outline the correct steps to a proper install?
Edit: I think the above mentioned file is for a GSM model, I'm sure I have the CDMA version.
Also, somewhat good news. I managed to install the oxygen rom, but for the 4g version and installed fine with no errors, but I have no service. What does this indicate, as I still want to restore back to a factory version (non-4g) of gingerbread 2.3.6.
What CWM version do you have? Is it 3.0.0.0?
Also, if you have no service, it's likely that you downloaded a ROM with an incorrect radio.
Edit:
If you have CWM 3.0.0.0, make sure to download the latest version, found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988686 (use 5023-cyan.img). You flash this the same way you did CWM previously, though in the terminal make sure you type out the 5023-cyan.img file name.
Next, download the stock ROM from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664. Simply look for your phone version, and you'll find the correct software variant.
Maybe you've fixed your phone already; if not, I hope this helps!
I wish you the best of luck. Oh, and through problems like these, you come to learn a lot more about your phone. That's what I've found, at least.
At the thread you mentioned above there is a version with a different radio, you might want to give that one a try.
You also said that you only wiped data and cache, so maybe you should do a full wipe before. Not doing that can sometimes lead to problems.

To be brief, the phone is up and running as brand new! Thank you so very much everyone. It seems the error was with CWM, as I was able to install and boot a 4g oxygen rom on my phone, I went into rom manager, and at the bottom of the list was an option to upgrade to 5.x. Installed the CWM update, wiped everything and was able to install the factory rom, no issues, and everything works just as I remember
I have most certainly learned more about my phone, and I am going to look at it as a rather stressful learning experience rather than a mistake on my part.
But a sincere thanks to everyone once again, I posted this at like 4am here and had a response within a few minutes, I was pulling my hair out haha!
Flashing to stock rom will help you out. You can get stock roms from Internet simply by searching in Google...

[Q] can you go back to stock froyo after flashing cm7

well right now I'm currently flashing the cm7 rom. I can't send/receive any mms right now. I've tried searching and I've tried a lot of things, but nothing seems to be working. I also miss my stock froyo as well. So I was wondering if I can revert back to the original stock froyo, but still be root.
I used rom manager and I backuped the orginal rom before I flashed the cm7 and the addons, but I don't know where it use or even how to go about it . Can I use that to revert back to the orginial rom and will I still be rooted?
I'm currently on the mytouch4g and if you know where I can download the rom for froyo please post a link.
thank you very much.

Hi, the answer to your question is actually in your post...if you backed up your froyo rom with the rom manager, then you just have to restore the backup.
To do that, go to the Rom manager, manage and restore, and then find your backed up rom. It should take a while and you will be back to the state you were before flashing CM7. Just in case make a nandroid backup of your current rom in case things don't go as expected. It should be working neatly. Hope it helps. Let me know if you could restore it. See ya....

Hey i also have a Mytouch 4G and i have looked around before but couldn't seem to find a Stock froyo rom that is rooted. I would recommend you use a different ROM other then CM7. There are plenty of roms in the mytouch 4g section. we also have a great dev TheDerekJay does an amazing job with keeping all his roms updated. im using his MIUI rom on my mytouch and im in love with it.
actually I just looked at my rom manager backup file. and it says the date for today... I used mybackup root to just back up my data because I was planning on changing my rom. So I'm seriously am confused now... I back uped the rom (froyo) just yesterday so shouldn't it say that 1/1/2012 instead of 1/2/2012? Should I just flash this backup anyway and hope for the best?

I should have the date and time when you did the backup...but if It was after midnight or your time zone is not correct that might affect the name. If it is the only backup you did then it must be it. Let me know after you flashed it how things resulted.
thanks glevitan. You were right the time zone is probably not set correctly. I restored the file and I'm back to the original stock froyo and I'm still rooted I'm very happy now. thank you so much.

[Q] NexusS (i9020T) hard bricked, at which step did I go wrong?

Hi everyone, I had a problem with my previous nexus s (I have since gotten a working replacement) and I was wondering where exactly I messed up so in the future I can avoid this
Here is what I did on my previous phone:
1. I flashed ics onto my device from the ota update package from androidcentral, it was 4.0.3. (This worked great and I had it on my phone for 2-3 months before I tried the next steps.)
2. I rooted my device successfully using the guide at nexusshacks.
3. I also flashed TWRP recovery (fastboot) and superuser using the above guide/links
4. When I would turn off my phone it would boot to a screen with a red triangle and an opened android bot. So what I would have to do is flash twrp recovery everytime I turned the phone on just to get it to work.
5. What I wanted to do was keep the stock rom but still have twrp recovery without it making me reflash it on every boot. So I clicked install and tried to flash the stock rom (update package from the link in step 1) with twrp recovery. It then turned off my phone and hard bricked it. I couldn't turn it on anymore and a new battery didn't fix it.
I was able to get a replacement now and I was just wondering at which step did I go wrong? I THINK that I should have wiped my cache before I tried to reflash the stock rom but maybe I'm way off base here. This is why I posted a question here so hopefully some of you guys can help.
I did think about posting in another thread, but I didn't wanna threadjack or anything... and his problem also seemed a bit different then mine. Also, sorry about not being able to provide the specific links it won't let me post them until I've posted 8 times.
I don't know for sure but team win recovery has been reported to corrupt the device's efs directory. I've even had problems myself using clockwork recovery. I've moved on to razor recovery and haven't looked back.
This is the most flash-friendly phone I've ever owned, and razor recovery rivals amon ra (which was awesome on my g1 and evo). I really think it may have just been the recovery you were using... Somebody correct me if i'm wrong.

I had once corrupted one of the partition. I fixed to by flashing stock recovery and stock rom.
Use adam outler's unbrickable mod tool. It can be found in android development section.

Thanks for the replies.
That's interesting about twrp... I didn't know that. Truth be told, the only reason I went for it over other ones like clockwork mod was because the UI looked pretty nice and easy to use. Also the guide I followed at nexusshacks used that, so I wanted to stay consistent with it.
jishnu7, it's a little late for that now however as I actually have already received a working replacement from my carrier, but in the future if something ever does go wrong (hopefully not) I will definitely check that out.
The main thing I'm wondering is if it messed up because I tried to reflash the stock rom essentially over top itself (was hoping that by doing that, it would stop making me reflash twrp on every reboot) or if it was because I didn't wipe the cache before the flash.
Also, what I really wanted to do with my phone was to keep the stock rom but be able to overclock my cpu/gpu. I was hoping I could set different overclocks for different things (I've heard of kernels where you can downclock your phone when the screens off and have it overclocked slightly while you're using it, that would be something I'd like to have). I figured to install those kernels I would have to root my phone, replace stock recovery and install superuser so that's why I tried to do that. Once again, I'm pretty new to all this stuff for my phone.
Sorry to bump this thread again, but I would really like to know how I could avoid what happened to me for the future. I think it's because I flashed the stock 4.0.3 rom over itself (was hoping that by doing that twrp recovery would stay on the phone after reboot).
What I would like to do is install something like CM9 or AOKP and use the Matr1x kernel so I could undervolt or overclock my phone.
I seriously dont get how u hard bricked your phone...
the reason you are thinking is you reflashed stock rom without wiping cache, as per my experiece its not at all the reason
now, whats my experience??
...I have some fault with my nexus device and I'm working on it,,and I did everything I could do...one of the thing out of those things was reflashing stock rom without wiping, and i did it quite a several times...my device never hard bricked,,however it was soft bricked for many times,,and i recovered from it
so reflasing a stock rom over stock rom, over ICS, over some themed custom rom, will not hard brick your device, you must be missing something none of your steps sounds suspecious
P.S:- pulling out battey while flashing something like this sounds suspecious, never tried though
I'm not sure what happened either to be quite honest with you. Since giving it another shot now with my new fresh phone I have had great success!
I did everything I wanted to do all in one go. Rooted it, install CWM touch, install AOKP (went with milestone 4 cuz I heard newest build 29 has some bugs) + gapps and installed matr1x kernel 18.5 bfs.
The only thing I did different from last time was installing CWM touch (instead of twrp) and flashed aokp this time (instead of reflashing 4.0.3 over itself).
I would just avoid step 2 at all cost.
The nexus s hacks dude is a tool.

Help unrooting

cliffs:
Got the phone from a friend of a friend.
It has the cyanogen mod on it (not sure which one)
Been using it for a few months and loved it, but now the phone is really acting weird, screen won't open/delayed etc
I would love to unroot this phone and just go back to regular stock that comes with the g2x but can't really find any good source to tell me how.
Am I screwed since I wasn't the one to root this phone?
Just figured out I have version: Cyanogenmod-7.2.0-p999
Add on:
I've tried to download the stock and I get this

Try a different cm7 rom
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk 2
In all honesty I would just flash the latest vanilla version of CM7 from get.cm. Its the most reliable ROM for this phone and way better than any stock firmware released by LG. There's tons of kernels you can flash also if you're into overclocking and undervolting like I am. However the stock cm kernel does the job.
ishoid large
I appreciate the suggestions, however it still does not relate to the more pressing problem of how I can not flash the rom. As pointed out in my first post, it comes up as
"Add on:
I've tried to download the stock and I get this
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
"
That sounds like a bad download.

It was a pretty old link, is there a link to which rom I should download for stock?
out of curiosity...did you do a full wipe (factory data reset, both caches and format /system) before trying to flash the stock rom? I believe Buru, one of the dev's for the g2x has a stock rooted 2.3.4 rom available for download in the dev section. There's a few of them out there.
If all else fails you could always check out ROM for recovery here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248644&highlight=search+this+forum

I was literally about to send a post here about what you mentioned.
It appears I did have an old download.
I did indeed do a factory data reset, both caches and the delvik (forget how it's spelled) wipe.
I had then succesfully installed back to factory.
so far the only problem I notice is phone calls. it's like a broken TV + fax line noise that is very loud. Any Ideas?
What you need to do is flash the correct baseband fix from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776843

You my friend are amazing!!!
Now basically every now and then both on wifi and slightly when not on wifi, I can hear myself echo.
Also for some reason, when I try to video skype someone, my video does not work.
Any suggestions?
so far, glad to have this phone working better than it did before!
The video thing is kinda weird. Which rom are you running? If you're trying to run anything above gingerbread there's tons of issues with video. Mainly that it doesn't work.
The echo thing I think i've seen people mention that but I'm not sure where. I can't remember whether or not it was resolved. All I can think of is some setting somewhere and something about dual mics... yeah. That's all I got. Maybe someone else will remember.
1 more thing if anyone can help. I know I've seen it some where, but I'm not able to use wifi to make calls/send text. I know there was something I had to download but can't find it again.
