Wireless Tether - Verizon Droid Charge

Has anyone gotten wireless tether to work? I know the built-in hotspot is free for another month or so, but I'm looking beyond that.

i havent, i've been trying to figure out a way to make the built-in one free.

no luck with either

I haven't tried it yet, but wouldn't the Barnacle Wifi Tether app work now that we can rollback and re-root?

code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether works perfectly if you're rooted.

Mine works fine

Yeah it definitely doesn't work for me. It also shows up as an ad-hoc connection in my available networks. From what I remember with my Evo, it showed up as a normal wifi network? What does it show as for you guys?

Wifitether only sets up ad-hoc unless the kernel was modified such in some builds i found of EVO and Droid Incredible. If you want infrastructure mode instead of ad-hoc you need to use the built in wifithether

Oh man, if you could get the built in one to work forever and have a few extra options, like channel, authentication, etc, that would be awesome. I realize the other wifi tether kinda works, but the stock one seems to be really stable.

How does the wifi hotspot check to see if it is still free?
Because I tried running Droid Wall and nothing showed up in the log.

Anyone having luck tethering to through the Wii? it works fine on my computer but the Wii says it cannot locate a signal...???

bump...anyone have an answer to my wii question.?

I don't have a Wii, but my 360 pairs up just fine to the wifi signal from my charge.

are you using wireless tether or the stock hotspot?

You cant use WifiTether app on your Wii. Many devices such as Ps3, zune, wii and even all android devices are unable to see ad hoc connections which are the kind of networks that app creates. If you were to use the built in Mobile hotspot app you wouldnt have any problems locating the signal.

It worked fine with my thunderbolt?

I just rooted my phone using ODIN to downgrade to ED1. Once that was all said and done and I rebooted, the phone, I put it in airplane mode, and connected to my wireless network via WiFi. Then I went into the market, and searched for Wireless Tether for Root. I downloaded that, along with SuperUser Permissions. Once you have both of those downloaded, Wireless Tether worked just fine for me.
NOTE: At first, I forgot to download SuperUser, and when I tried to use Wireless Tether, it would fail and pop-up with a message asking if my phone was rooted. Then I remembered I needed SuperUser. Problem fixed!

Yeah same as what everyone else is saying - the built in mobile hotspot works great and used inf mode but they will start charging for it on the 15th? - After rooting and installing SU the wifi tether for root works however it uses ad-hoc.

Is there a way to go into the EPST settings and edit the DUN NAI string like I could on my previous Verizon phone?
Edit: Found this while googling. Wouldn't this same method work on the Charge? It's basically the same phone in some ways. forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818789
Edit Again: Or maybe not... I haven't picked up my phone yet, but I guess the Charge isn't using a Qualcomm chip.

I found the wireless tether application to be unstable. I tried Barnacle and it seems to work well for me. It is also an ad hoc connection and it too requires root.

I can't even get the stock tethering app to work, it closes as soon as I open it

G1 connecting to another G1 tether?

I have 2 G1's both are running cyanogenmod 4.2.15.1. One has a data plan, and the other does not, is there any way to connect the non-data G1 to the other through wifi tether? Every time I try, it just doesn't show up as an availiable network to connect.
Ask Google about enabling ad-hoc mode. Or you could tether through Bluetooth PAN:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=666988
I didn't try this, but both approaches should work.
Do you have some knowledge on unix systems?
I do remember hearing about Android not being able to connect to any ad-hoc wifi. I am not aware of anyone being able to do it.

Then now you are ;-) Many people use ad-hoc mode, there are plenty of howtos in the internet.
I've done it before... I use the WiFi tethering app available through Google Code. The project is Android-WiFi-Tether (sorry, I'm too new to post links). I don't know what app you are using to tether, but check the settings to see if it's got the SSID hidden.
but have you been able to use wifi tether to share the phone's connection with another Android phone? I've never had to, but I do remember hearing about problems with it. Then again it was a while ago and things could have very well changed.
Sent from my T-Mobile G1 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Yes, I have been using that exact version of wifi tether. Iphone, samsung, and blackberry phone can connect, but no matter what I try I just can't get the g1 to even see the connection. I have changed the ssid, enabled WEP encryption, and even changed the channels to no avail............I guess it just wasn't ment to be LOL. I can't even connect using the bluetooth PAN option either
Ehh... again, from the beginning...
It is possible to use both ad-hoc and BT PAN on G1, but they are not supported officially, so you must do some hacking. Wireless Tether for Root does it for you, but it can start server only, not connect to existing networks and I don't know whether there is an app which simplify that second task.
You could try to find some app or howtos about doing it manually - through hacking. As I mentioned before, there are plenty of them in the internet.
Finally...
I would like to thank everyone for the help, I finally got it done, I just had to edit some settings using the terminal. If there is anyone else out there wanting to do the same as me, just search for ...How to connect to Ad Hoc networks using Tmobile G1 Android at hydtechblog"dot com"

Yeah, exactly
Also there are patches floating around to add ad-hoc support (to connect to them like to normal AP networks), so maybe some roms have it, but most (all?) of devices just can't use ad-hoc on original rom.
I would have just used wired tether...
Never had a problem with ANY android device I've connected to my g1.
I just like to keep things simplistic in specific situations...

Wifi tether not working in new update?

I just go it working yesterday with TnT Lite 1.03, but it will not work with TnT 2.0. Mega, mega bummer.
It worked fine all day after installing the wifi tether app and tested several times after reboots of the Incredible and the Gtablet.
Same as before I got it working. Does not see the Incredible.
UPDATE:
Installed another version from the wifitether site (Incredible 2.1 version). It connects, but not consistently.
Not sure what the issue is. I do notice that when it does connect a "Wireless Tether - AC disabled" pops up in notifications. If that does not pop up in notifications, no connection.
TnT 2.0 works with my wifi tether on EVO.
Wifi Tether v. 2.0.5-pre11.
I think it has to do with the fact that Android in general has an issue with tethering to devices that broadcast in ad-hoc mode instead of infrastructure mode.
For example, using Wifi Tether for Root Users app from market, my Galaxy S cannot be seen by the G Tablet. Neither can my Hero. Because this app (according to its documentation @ google code) uses ad-hoc mode only. (see here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=11)
But when I use the Samsung built-in "Mobile AP" checkbox (it's in settings on the Galaxy S), it works perfectly; the G Tablet sees the phone and all is well. Because it uses infrastructure mode.

I haven't done anything special. The settings are pretty as is when I installed it.
Have you checked to see if you can connect another device to the Evo first?
Here are my settings:
wifi encryption enabled
changed the passphrase
changed the ssid
Channel is 11
Access Control is enabled
lan = 192.168.1.0/24
let me know if you need any other info.

hi
i have the same setting on wifi tether app on my EVO i am able to connect and browse internet but in about 5 - 10 minutes the connections drops. By drops i mean it still shows connected but i am then not able to open any webpage at all. it keeps telling me web page not available.
Do you have the same issue?
This is all about the infrastucture mode. I would recommend trying to find the mobileAP app/mod for your phones. All of the galaxy s phones, even the stock 2.1 roms can be modded to have this mobileAP added, etc... Pretty much any phone that has at least 2.1 I'd look in the relivent xda forum for a mobile ap mod...

Trouble Connecting G Tab with Original Motorola Droid
I have tried everything I have read to tether my G Tablet to my original Motorola Droid. So far I have been unsuccessful. I am still running the original firmware with Tap N Tap, but I am also running Launcher Pro. I have rooted both the G Tablet and my Droid. I have tried Barnacle Wifi Tether and Wireless Tether. I also installed Update 2967 that was pushed to my tablet on 22-Nov. Could that have messed me up? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

have you tried the two independently of one another? meaning, have you made sure the gtab is able to connect to a regular old wifi ap? have you checked other devices tethered to your droid?
I don't think the update would have / should have messed up your gtab's ability to connect to a wifi point.

My iPod touch works well with Barnacle on my Droid. Also, my G Tablet works well with both my Netgear Wirless G and D-Link Wireless N routers.
UPDATE: I realized last night that my files were not being overwritten with the modified ones, even though I was telling Root Explorer to replace the existing ones. I will delete the old wpa_supplicant.conf file before copying the modified version next time, to see if it makes a difference. Right now I am restoring everything that I had on the GTab little by little after frying my wifi settings last night. I couldn't get it working, so I did a factory reset and lost everything.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Yep. That was my problem. My modified wpa_supplicant.conf file was not replacing the original one. Once I deleted the old one manually, and copied the modified one in its place, it worked. I can now tether to my original Motorola Droid. I am using a program called AdhocAble to switch easily between two different wpa_supplicant.conf files (one for adhoc, and another for infrastructure).
I have an EVO but I get stock on obtaining ip address - any suggestion?
Works flawlessly tethered to my DX.

[Q] Motorola Photon Q Tether

Hi all. I am reaching out for some help.
I have unlocked my Photon Q and installed Superuser so now my phone is rooted. I have done the root checker and its verified that I am rooted. I have a reboot app that I use to do a quick reboot and works perfect because it required a rooted phone.
My problem is, whether I use Wifi Tether or FoxFi (and I have the latest release), the hotspot will turn on and show running and my computer will connect to the hotspot but the speeds are soooooooo slow that it actually times out.
I have done speedtests in the areas that I am trying to use the hotspot and will get 1.5 megs down easy. But when I use the hotspot, the speeds die down to almost nothing.
Anyone know of a fix? Should I lock the bootloader again? Any help would be appreciated!!
Thank you!!
Found Fix
Just found this and it works: WiFi Tether: use "Generic ICS" device type and check routing fix and MMS clamping
I have slow tethering speeds using Wifi Tether as well, but trying what you did didn't work. My phone Speedtests around 750-350kbps on 3G, but the tethering caps around 75-50kbps.

If you are tethering to a PC I HIGHLY recommend you tether via USB. I have seen SIGNIFICANT speed differences through USB. Good Ole PDA Net does it for me! ;]
Yup, USB tether is quite a bit faster. Good find, thanks!

I'm trying to use the built-in USB tether option (Settings -> Tethering & Mobile Hotspot -> USB Tethering is checked) and it does not work.
Now my Win7 PC does "see" a new RNDIS connection (creates a new 'local area connection' icon in Network Connections), and when I click on that connection I do see that it has an IP address/default gateway. I am able to ping the default gateway, however, I am not able to ping 8.8.8.8 or get to the internet.
I was using an app for wifi tethering previously, but that killed the battery so quickly USB charging couldn't keep up - it was draining faster than it was charging... I've used USB tethering in the past, and when it's possible I vastly prefer it - for the obvious reasons, and the ones listed above.
So is there a 'trick' to get USB tethering to work? Everything appears to be in place and functional, but the final step of getting online is just not working!
Sorry if the OP thinks I'm thread-jacking, I can create another thread - but this one seemed appropriate to post in for my issue.
Thanks!!

Native USB tether doesn't work? The option is there, and it seems to connect... Like I said I get the RNDIS connection, so it seems to be functional. Just no internets.
I can try a third-party app, but would really rather not... especially if I have to pay for said app, when this functionality is built-in.

i think that's the thing about Sprint and the unlimited data plant(assuming you have service with them): they don't let you tether for free. Both the native wifi and usb tethering seem to require a subscrption... i get a popup on the phone saying it can't connect because i am not subscribed or whatever.
I use PdaNet+, aka FoxFi i believe, and it works well for usb tethering. I think the free version just has a usage limit.
Oh, i've seen the native hotspot hacked to work for free on some Samsung Sprint phones... not sure if the specifics are universal or not:

Thanks for the response.
Wifi tethering works - although it does require a third party app. The built-in method didn't seem to work, and I didn't think there was a free USB tether app like there is for wifi tethering.
I guess USB tethering is the same deal, as I do not pay for any additional "tethering" options on my plan... But I've never gotten any nastygrams/popups about how I do not have the proper plan... hum.
I'll see if I can find an app that'll do it for free. Thanks again.
If anyone knows how to get the native method to work, let me know - just odd that everything seems to work, except for the actual connection part.

I just tried the native hotspot and usb tether again, and i didn't get any popup this time. So i think it is possible to not get a message but still have it be blocked in the ROM. On hotspot i could get it to connect but with no internet access.
If i get time and motivation, i might try messing around with the hack that i linked from the Epic 4G Touch, and seeing if i could make it work here. It doesn't look overly complicated as far as things go? And i've been meaning to learn about de- and re-compiling.

I used easytether in the past, I will try it again. I just tried SVTP Lite, and the USB Tether option said "not available".
I tried to download PDANet, but the Play Store said my carrier did not allow this app to be downloaded..... dafaq.
Edit - got EasyTether to work, but of course I didn't pay for it and the 'lite' version is pretty restricted. It's still slow as all get-out, so I must be in a black hole for service - I have 3-4 bars of 3g, but I am inside a concrete building.
Oh well. I guess I'll stick to wifi tethering as it's free, and unrestricted. I was hoping to find something similar for USB tethering, but it seems there is none... Let me know if you guys find something I missed. Thanks!

Make sure you're on the newest build.
On Stock ROMS just use ISWAT Tether unlocker from the market, then use the stock tethering app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tetherunlocker&hl=it
It works fine even in ICS altough is made to overcome the general android changes introduced with JB 4.1.2.
You have to launch it once before using the stock tethering app (or buy the full version which is always active).

I had tried several wifi tether options on my Photon and none seemed to work. Some I couldn't even see the hotspot, some I could and could connect but the actually connection wouldn't work (i.e load pages).
Just tried the app above and it works flawlessly. I'll use it sparingly a bit, and make sure to check my next bill to ensure that Sprint doesn't ding me for a hotspot charge, but at least from a functionality approach it works great!

Frankly I was really surprised to see Photon's behavior, being mine on ICS (usually I use GB,ICS, or JB 4.1.1 purposely to avoid tethering problems), so I guessed that Sprint anticipated Google's move.
Looks like I was right.

The app is written by an Italian to avoid the tethering charges from Vodafone Italy, that Vodafone users are facing since the release of JB 4.1.2, i guess the same should apply to Sprint users in the US, but obviously I can't be sure .

[Q] macbook with phone Ad-Hoc connection!

I am on stock ICS and in order to use an app called TouchOSC on my atrix 2 to control a DJ'ing software on my macbook pro i need to wirelessly tether my phone to my mac. So for this I created an Ad hoc network on my macbook and tried connecting my phone to it. i couldnt get that to work since my phone refuses to connect to the ad hoc network everytime. however i am able to set everything up perfectly when i am using a router to connect both my Macbook and the phone. But i cant carry the router everywhere so i need an On the go solution so for that its important to get the adhoc connection working.
any solutions?
PS: i have heard i can get it to work after rooting, but the success rate is really low. what can I do?
Anyone?
I will be honest, I have several macs at home, and I have never been able to get the a2 to work with ad hock wifi, but blue tooth ad hock networking seems to work ok for me. I can both share the internet connection on my macbooks, and I can even ssh to and from the macbook pros to the phone and back.
Not sure about the apps you are using, nor what they use exactly, but if it is just IP or http or similar the blue tooth connection should work.

I believe ICS blocked ad hoc connections, I read somewhere u can modify WPA supplicant, but I didn't look into it too far...
PS doesn't work on win or Linux either
Sent from my MB865 using xda app-developers app

Yeah it does... I have used both linux and mac os, but have not tried windows. Bluetooth tethering as I mentioned works well, and I did not have to change anything to make it work. Now technically you are correct that wifi tether does not work well with ICS, but, as I mentioned I have been using bluetooth without issues, and since most macs have bluetooth out of the box, it was one of those things to try out. My linux home box also has a bluetooth receiver on the MB, and I have tested it there as well. It was sort of trial and error to get it all setup right, and I do not remember what exactly I did, but I have been using it without issue for months now.
P.S. I am still on leak one, so I am not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. I have found several things that do not work on the OTA still seem to work with leak 1, and why I have not updated to the OTA, and I never will.
