So I have a class 2 8gb sd card (sandisk) that I bought about a year ago. A similar one came with my G2 recently and I decided to test the speeds to use the faster one. The one I purchased a year ago, it turns out, reads at 10 MB/s and writes at 5.5 MB/s. I confirmed it with several trials. I thought that SD classes indicated speed... and that a class 2 = 2mb/s r/w, class 4 = 4, etc. This seems very fast, especially considering the other class 2 8gb that came with the g2 runs at about half the speed.
How come they vary so much? Is this card that I have faster than a class 6?
You are right when you say a class 2 should have 2 mb/s and a class 4 should have 4mb/s, but there is something you are forgetting: the class is the minimum write speed. I have a samsung class 6, which has a minimum 6 mb/s write speed, but it actually writes at 9.5 mb/s and reads at 17 mb/s. A card is considered to be a class 2 if during testing it can consistently score 2 mb/s.
Sandisk cards are/were known for being faster than their ratings.
I just bought a sandisk 16gb class 2 on amazon. I ran a speedtest and was consistently getting class 4 speeds and and made it up to class 6. I'm glad I didn't pay extra for that class 4.

Hey, I know that there's been some threads around but from searching through them it seems most haven't been commented on since last year, so I was hoping to see if there might be some change in opinions etc since then.
I'm in the process of buying a HTC Desire, and while I love the flexibility of Android, I can see myself getting annoyingly held back by low internal memory.
So my intended solution was to eventually root my phone when I have a spare moment, and flash the StarBurst ROM, since Data2SD seems to do a better job at forcing apps to install onto an SD card compared to App2SD (correct me if I'm wrong - newbie here) -- I know that I'd still have to install some widgets etc onto internal memory.
SO: my question is: What size of card would be good? And will I need to consider a Class 4 to be able to make use of Data2SD / App2SD functions?
There's an approximate $4-5 difference between a class 4 4GB + 8GB microSD card on eBay (and obviously, a class 2 of these two will be cheaper)
- I'm happy to pay for the larger card, provided that the extra 4GB are likely to be put to use (ie, I'm not entirely sure how much of a card I should reserve for apps to have room for a decent collection in the future)

I am using a 16GB class 4 from SanDisk. I have 15GB fat32 and a 1GB ext partition with Oxygen 2.0 and Data2SD. Absolutely no lags at all, just fine. Class 4 is good enough. You won't set the best result in benchmarks, but I personally don't care about benchmarks. As long as everything is going smooth i'm happy.
Size is a choice you have to make yourself. 1GB for apps is enough for me. Music and stuff on the fat32 partition. It depends on what you want.

Maybe instead, of ebay pay little a bit more and get the genuine fast card. I'm happy owner of a-data 16 gb class 10 working smoothly on StarBurst. Be careful of chinese fakes on ebay.

Yeah, I heard about eBay fakes along the way. This is the type of card I found through ebay SanDisk 4GB Class 4 (can't link directly due to being a newbie on here, unfortunately), it says its coming from US from a "dz-tech" seller.
- So if I need to stay away from eBay, should a google search along the lines of "8GB class 6 microSD" suffice for finding a reputable dealer?

Thanks for that what exactly do you mean by setting best results in benchmarks? I mean, I don't mind if the card doesn't score the highest in speed ratings, but I'm assuming that you're referring more to the fact that a class 4 is fast enough to let me run apps from the card through the phone smoothly?

I mean that if you run a benchmark, you will probably get better results with cards that are rated with a higher class. So with a class 6 (or 8 or 10) you will get a better benchmark result. But, my point is, a class 4 card is good enough to use for data2sd and that stuff (as used in starburst rom) You don't need a very very fast card. Your phone will run smooth with an class 4 card, saw it with my own eyes.
Oh, I almost forgot: I think you should buy your card in a real (web)shop, not from ebay. No offense but if you buy on ebay you never know if you get a good card. Especially with this data2sd-thing it's important to have a good card. But that's just my point of view.

Having tried different SD card. (class 4 to 6 - 10) for the data2sd or D2EXT, I still recommend a class 10.
but a little attention as stated above, there are many bad card cheap on Ebay. Prefer to buy a card at a site known or a shop.

After a lot of heartache in actually getting the original Desire I bought (original sale is still being disputed in paypal), I ended up buying a 2nd one that had a 4GB Class 4 included with it. Win!
I got an unbranded one, so so far I haven't run out of room (its day 2, give me a week. haha), but its good to know its at least one less thing to worry about if I do go ahead with the ROM
I understand where your coming from about Ebay with the dodgey chinese imports but take a look under the 16GB card on the accessories forum. I cant post a link because im still classed as a Noob lol

Ive ordered mine because the 720p is laggy when recording and i was a class 10 for best performance. and for £18 you cant go wrong for a 16GB class 10 Micro SD! Seriously i know where you coming from with Ebay but this is 100% genuine. Good cards and shipped from the UK!!!

Wow, I thought Data2SD only worked with Sense ROMs (and not even all Sense ROMs). Oxygen 2.0 is AOSP right?
I have been running a 16gb class 10 cheap sd card from lowpricememory for a few weeks with data2sd (Starburst and cool Z), the card was tested with write speeds of around 15MB/s and worked ok for a couple of weeks.
However I then started to get errors, with the card mounting as read only and also the odd crash.
I have since swapped to a Sandisk 8GB mobile ultra class 4 card, although the sequential write speed of the Sandisk is only about 6MB/s, the random write speed of small blocks of data is way higher than my original class 10 card.
The Sandisk card makes the phone seem faster, also the quadrant score has improved from 1600 to 2000.
I have formatted and tested the card from lowpricememory for errors since I removed it from my phone, none were detected, so I think that the card is fine, just not suited to running in a phone with data2sd.
It does seem to be that its not all about card class, you need to look into how fast a card can random write smaller blocks of data.
Tests of both cards are below.

well, with class 10 cards and Data2sd type of scripts, I always had LOTS of lag, it was horrible.
in the mean time i decided to try an 8gb sandisk mobile ultra as well and I'm really happy. My experience is about the same as mps711.

Lots of grumbling about the microSDHC that Samsung is shipping with the GS4G, which does carry a "Class 2" stamp on it, but just how fast is it?
Tests were performed using a Lenovo T410s, Windows 7, ChkFlsh v1.16.1, and an Elago microSDHC Nano II USB reader. Tests were against the raw device.
Tested were
Samsung OEM 16 GB -- 14.9 MB/s read, 7.5 MB/s write
Transcend 8 GB, Class 6 -- 14.8 MB/s read, 11.1 MB/s write
AData 8 GB, Class 6 -- 14.9 MB/s read, 11.1 MB/s write
Given these results, I'm finding the all the bashing and reported "slowness" of the card a little harder to give a lot of weight to.
Even if the write speed is a little slower (or even a lot slower), that the read speed is comparable suggests to me that most things (like launching an app from /media/) wouldn't be significantly sped up by a Class 6 or Class 10 card. Maybe I'm missing something because of potential read bottlenecks in the reader or host USB controller that wouldn't be present in the physical device, but jeeze -- all of Angry Birds can be read off the card in a second.
My class 10 will be here Friday, I can let you know how that compares to the class 2 that came with it.
I benchmarked both of my cards in CrystalDiskMark (64-bit) in Windows 7 64bit. The cards were both placed into a Micro->Mini adapter. Here's what I came up with. Left side is Samsung 16GB, right side is my Transcend card.
As you can see, for random 4K block performance, the Trasncend beats out the Samsung by a good amount. Not sure how often the phone actually encounters that type of usage. Also, I don't believe the numbers on the bottom row matter for the phone. That's with a Queue depth. I think it only matters on a PC using NCQ (Native Command Queuing).
Random write performance is pretty horrendous for both cards.
The card that came with it keeps giving errors when I try to copy the partitions to my new c6. Might be my reader but this card doesn't seem very good. This could jave been the best phone on the market if it had a flash and a few gigs of internal storage. Not sure what theu were thinking.

Although, on the Wintec class 10, I did see write speeds above 15 MB/s at one point.

I think m friend bought a Final Fantasy XIII PS3 korean release in there. its reliable. I just dont know how long it will take for the package to come(also depends on where u are tho).
I have a follow up question. Will having a class 10 sd have a great impact on the performance of the phone? or is it just too much for our phone to utilize that class 10 speed?

Don't buy from ebay, there are a lot of fake sellers who sell fake cards with fake storage, very low speeds and stuff.
It would depend on what you are going to use the card for. Will you be storing your programs on the memory card? Dalvik cache?

I bought a A-data Card 8gb Class 6 and i happy with it . It write with 7mb/s .
I saw that many people bought A-data 8gb class 6 for their OO .

I paid 15eur for my 8Gb class 10 card on ebay (just search for Team class 10).It is the same price of class 4 Kingston card on any local store.

If your attempting to take videos with your Optimus, then the faster class cards will probably make a difference. Copying files to your microsd card will be faster using a higher class. Accessing your photo gallery will be faster. In other words, it will help when you read or write non-random large files.
I am a lot less sure that a Class 8 or class 10 will be of benefit if you want to speed up your use of programs/data and Davalik cache moved over to your memory card. The big question is whether writing small files is critical to the overall speed of your Optimus. If writing small files is critical the speed of sequential reads or writes of large files is far less important which is what the class rating is telling you.
I would rather buy from the little guy/manufacturer that has a brilliant product. However, I recently bought 2 Sandisk class 4 cards for android devices. I tested them with Crystal Disk Mark 3.01 (64bit version).

I learned a couple of things. I ordered 2 Sandisk that were supposidly the same from the same dealer one week apart. They performed differently. The relative performance of the Sandisk cards writing 4k files compared to others was startling. I had seen such results reported before but it had more impact on me when I saw it myself. Since I will be using A2sd, I am happy with my Sandisk cards.
PS I also verified that the Sandisk cards were really the size proclaimed by using H2testw v1.4
PPS I have heard that older class 2 Sandisk are often faster. I also heard that Sandisk is in the process of discontinuing the class rating of their microsdhc cards.
@explore3: that's quite a lot to ponder on... I will be researching on the cards that I will be finding here in our place... I'm aiming for a class 6 8gb and that a-data class10 8gb if i find it here. I know class 10 cards are (maybe) too much for our phones but i like taking a lot of pictures since i learned how to take good macro shots with our phone. Taking videos would not that be great because our phones are capped to quite mediocre quality video recording.
I think i saw some sandisk cards in here too. I will take a look at them along with the cards im looking for. Thanks for the input.

No patch? You mean to say you're gonna fill that card only with multimedia files to be viewed on a O1? kinda weird :/ But to me class 4 is too weak for a 32gb card.
Have one of these and installed mod android 9 on it and just have bare minimum on it as use it for kids
I'm looking for a memory card for this as I believe can only take 64gb and not more that correct.Want to put movie on it

I get something larger. It supports up to 1tb.
I'm using a 512gb and upgrading to a 1 tb soon.
Make sure it's V30 rated and use a well know name brand.

Looking at the manual found online it seems it can only take 64gb dont want to spend money on higher gb and wont work?

My bad... sorry.
You can a V30 rated 64gb card for around $15 now I think. Get a Sandisk Extreme, known for speed and have a good reliability record.
