Hi everyone,
I can cd to directories and list files with no problem on my device. It's rooted, ADB works, I can install .apks, etc...
However, I tried to install an .apk in /system/app, and there was not enough room. So, I used the adb install command to install, and specified it to install to /data/app (where there is room, according to df) and I get this error:
"can't find '/data/app' to install"
Again, I can cd to /data/app, and I can list files there -- the directory DOES exist on my device. But when I specify any directory (not just /data/app) to install to explicitly, I get the "can't find... to install" error.
I have never seen this before. What gives?
I'm not sure what command you're using but you don't need to specify a directory in which to install to. Just use 'adb install myapp.apk' and it will put it in /data/app. From the sounds of it ADB is trying to find another package to install called "/data/app" and failing to find it.

Some of you are familiar with the adb install command.
Is there an equivalent of it in the terminal emulator?
Hi,
Adb is used from the computer and terminal emulator is used from the phone.
What are you trying to do?
I'm trying to install an app without using astro.
your best choise would be
cd to the location of the apk file and use
adb install appname.apk
or adb install C:\folder\appname.apk
think thats the correct way im not sure how you can install it in the terminal i knwowho to remove it.. but not install :/
Install .apk via Terminal EMulator
1) Place the .apk on the root of your SD card (for simplicity)
2) Type "su"
3) cd into the destination of your .apk (in this case it will be cd /sdcard)
4) Use "install "name of .apk" /"destination"/"name of .apk"
su
cd /sdcard
install com.makemobile.coursepro.apk /system/app/com.makemobile.coursepro.apk
further example:
install "space" com.makemobile.coursepro.apk "space" /system/app/com.makemobile.coursepro.apk
This will install the app on your phone using the Terminal Emulator. The destination location can change as well.

On the flip side, could you uninstall from the ext2 partition this way?
install on/from ext2
not sure...I'll looks into this. I had my apps and data on my sd however, it seemed a little buggy and inconsistant. It may have been due to using original G1 1gb class 2 card.
-let me know if you find out first.

cd is a command, meaning "change directory". Which is used to move your location on the system.

cd is a *nix command , it is short for 'change directory' and it... changes directory

it depends on what the app is
your best bet would be to get an app called 'Astro file manager' from the market
Its quite easy, so I won't go into further detail
Which to be honest is a fair trade

Some people have mentioned the `install' command from BusyBox, but this won't quite do what you probably want. To invoke the full Android package installation experience--the complete equivalent of `adb install'--you're looking for `pm install'. It takes the same arguments that `adb install' does, checks signatures, creates the appropriate user accounts, etc. so the package is installed the Android way. You can also use `pm uninstall' to remove a package (and as with `adb install', the "-k" option keeps its data around).
The `am' and `pm' commands are both underdocumented, but can be terribly useful. `am' can issue arbitrary Intents, including some Extra values. `pm' has other features not mentioned here, but which are shown in the help text.

'pm install' often fails with [INSTALL_FAILED_INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE]
which used to frustrate me no end ..
simple shell script
Code:
am start -a android.intent.action.VIEW -t application/vnd.android.package-archive -d file://$1
just pass the full path e.g
sh /sdcard/installapk.sh /sdcard/theapp.apk
and it pops up the Android Package installer

Interesting. I wonder if that's related to A2SD or a particular implementation, and pm getting confused as a result? Still, I like the idea of sending the VIEW intent to bring up the package installer. Good snippet.
I just cp the files to /system/sd/app/
from Windows Command prompt, and after switching to the folder containing the .apk file, type:
adb install filename.apk
if it is a reinstall:
adb install -r filename.apk
you could also push the file to the app folder. I use this method to push system apk:
adb remount <<<< you have to remount since you're going to mess with a sys folder
adb push filename.apk /system/app
seriously useful thread... especially after for some weird reason certain apps fail to install using the default Android installer. *cough* Radiant *cough*
Thanks for the help guys. Btw install command doesn't work. To clear things out for some clueless person like I am :
1. Open Terminal Emulator
2. Type -
su
cd /dir
pm install appname.apk
3. Done!
Example -
su
cd /sdcard
pm install AstroFileManager.apk
Hope that can help!

Thanks big time. Installed perfectly although apk won't open...just got to find one that will.
I have an otherwise stock EVO that I need to remove a file from /data.
Can I do this using adb?
It looks like I need root access to do this?
mount gives "operation not permitted" error. Is this a major undertaking or can I just install a simple package to get me access to this folder?
Maybe it will help if I give more details.
I have my phone connected to my laptop via USB, and am using adb shell to gain shell access to the phone.
If I cd to /data, it looks empty. I know it's not empty, because one of my apps stores data there.
I have read elsewhere that there may be a version of su that I can download and install via adb push. Could I use this to gain root access via adb shell and then use that to remount the /data file system so that I could modify files there?
It just occured to me that maybe I could use adb push to overwrite the files. I'll look into that too, but I'm sure I would get permission problems with that too.
I've installed some apps that have versions in their names, and am attempting to remove them from the phone now as they are not needed anymore.
I've navigated via command prompt to the /system/app area and can see the list of .apk files, but am having no luck in removing anything that has what appears to be ( ) or < >. If I enter it with (, it says syntax error, "(" unexpected. If I try it using <, it says system cannot find file specified. Is there something else I can try?

well instead of say... rm myfilesoandso(version1) you can rm myfilesoanso*
just be careful that there arent any other files with a similar name as thats a wild card.
you can put the filename in quotations as well. so instead of:
rm filename(1).apk
it would be:
rm "filename(1).apk"

Are you stuck at the error saying---->"there was an error installing superuser" still? cause if you are i think i can help you..., just on your ouya head over to MANAGE-SYSTEM-ADVANCED and scroll down to apps and delete the BUSYBOX FREE and SUPERUSER APPS...after that's done just repeat the commands again and reboot the system, then go click on MAKE>SOFTWARE>SUPERUSER and allow it to UPDATE but not from recovery and if that doesn't work let me know and ill tell you what to do next...BUT if your stuck at "adb push su /sdcard/su cannot stat 'su': No Such Files Or Directory" error then i can also help you...let me know, it's very simple, less than a minute

Hi,
I'm at the point where I've installed 'superuser' apk via adb. I've rebooted the console, gone to MAKE>SOFTWARE>SUPERUSER but when I click on 'install', I just get the error message: "There was an error installing Superuser. Please send a log to the error to the developer" but there are no logs.
Any ideas?

yes, the best way to do it is with this tool OUYA toolbox and you can find it over here-----> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2350900 follow the instructions plug in your OUYA to your pc and download the test version of the tool, open it, click on install superuser and install it, then istall busybox and install it...then go to make- software-superuser and Update but not from recovery, then plug you OUYA back on to the pc and run the ouya toolbox program again and root(if you want to), you will be all set with SuperUser apk and busybox apk and root working perfect with no errors...

I think I might have found the issue. I think I forgot to copy the 'su' executable from /sdcard to /system/xbin. I've copied the correct 'su' executable to /system/xbin now. I'll have to test it later, I'm connected remotely at the moment so I can only do the shell stuff, I can't run Superuser.
What is the difference between the nativesu and the su copied from the attachment on this thread. There is a significant difference in size. Is the native su crippled in someway?

Hi,
I have an HTC one and I flashed onedroid-m7ul_signed_121913_171116 onto it. I now want to update to the latest version but I can't seem to get the file onto my device. In windows, I see my htc one and I can browse through the folders, rename and delete files. But when I try to copy a file onto the device I get an error. It says "Can not copy item. The device is no longer connected or the connection to the device has been interrupted" (translated from the dutch error message, wording may not be correct).
So I tried with "adb push onedroid.zip /sdcard" I see the file on the device be TWRP won't flash it, it appears to be corrupt. I've also tried going into adb shell and doing a " mount -o remount,rw /" this appeared to have no effect at all, I still can't copy anything to my device.
I've been googling for hours now and still no solution
Any tips/suggestions are very welcome.
Update:
It appears the zip file was corrupt and this was causing all my issues, thread can be locked/deleted
