[Q] Is LED Light possible on Sprint Nexus S? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I understand that the Nexus S doesn't have an LED notification. I've installed No LED as an option. Is it possible that one will be added later? I'm not sure what the 2 holes in the upper left corner of the phone are, but can either be used as a blinking LED?
I wonder why Google would choose to leave this feature off the phone. Makes me think not many people like the feature, which I personally love.

i believe one is a light sensor, the other is proximity? not sure exactly what they are but they aren't leds camera is the one on the right obviously.
download an app called noLED it works great.
*edit* missed the part where you said you installed no led. as far as i know it's the only option.

This is where the technical prowess of the dev community comes in handy. Look for NS4G compatible kernels with BLN, or Back-Light Notification. While the screen is off, it illuminates the row of keys at the bottom of the phone, on and off on and off.
You can even customize it the time-on and time-off to your liking, so it blinks in a way that alerts you. This is far better than noLED, because it doesn't use the screen at all, and the battery drain is negligible, if any at all.
I use Netarchy's kernel, and most other kernels out there feature BLN as well. You'll need to purchase the BLN Control app from the market, but it's worth every penny and is cheap anyways.
I cannot comment on NS kernel compatibility with NS-4G's, but I believe they are....dont trust me on it though.
UPDATE: I have confirmed that Netarchy's kernel works fine for the NS-4G. You can find it here. You'll need to choose the appropriate version, depending on whether you're running a stock-rooted ROM or a custom ROM. You'll need to be using Android version 2.3.4, as the 2.3.3 kernels he released are not compatible with the NS-4G.
If you use one of these kernels, be sure to install the Voodoo Control App as well, it'll greatly improve your music sound quality, as well as allowing you to tweak the colors of the display. You can also overclock with the kernel installed.
If you're not sure how to flash kernels or root your phone (both of which you'll need to/should do), then consult the Nexus S Dev Forum, and you'll find a guide or two on this process. Basically you're gonna need ClockWorkMod recovery and root access so you can flash the new kernel. Both will be beneficial to you in the long run, especially if you have any interest in customization and new ROMS.

Regarding to my tiny knowledge about display types I wonder if anyone could inform me about problems installing noLED on the Nexus S with SLCD display
Thanks

Anything like "tap to wake" for the G2?

Hey guys,
One of the things I loved on my old Galaxy Nexus was the ability to double tap the screen to wake it up. When LG announced the G2 would come with this feature it reminded me how much I used it.
Does anyone know what would be involved to take advantage of this on the N5? Is it just a kernel thing?
Thanks in advance
faux said he was possibly working on something like this for his kernel.
I'm sure with kernel mods they will also be able to make this phone listening even with screen off using the low power processor in the phone. This would be an ideal option to add to the phone, theoretically you could set your alarm for the next morning without even having to touch the phone.
Check out Gravity Screen
Sorry, I can't post a direct link since I'm new

[Q] Using NFC with a case

I have an external battery for my N5 that has a fairly thick case in addition to the battery being directly on the back of the phone. The case is very difficult and time consuming to take off, making normal NFC (mainly Google Wallet) impossible to use. So, my first question: Is it possible to somehow boost the power of the N5's NFC just enough to overcome the case? I'm sure that's a hardware thing and nothing can be done, but I'm willing to spend some time playing around with settings if it's something that can be "overclocked" (wrong term, I know, but it's the general idea of what I'd like).
Second, I'm looking into using NFC tags for various things. Are there certain tags that are "stronger" than others and would be able to be read through the case if the above isn't possible? I can do the research to actually find some that I'd buy, but if there's a standard or something that I should search for then I'd need to know that.
ETA: If none of the above is possible, does anyone know of a way I could wear something like a Bluetooth wristband so that the phone automatically unlocks while in range of the wristband? I don't need any fancy features, just something that provides a Bluetooth signal that I can wear or keep in my pocket (keyring?) all day to keep the phone unlocked while connected (via Lollipop's Smart Unlock feature).
Thank you!
Boosting the nfc power is not possible through settings. All nfc tags are pretty much the same. Good news for you is motorola makes a little key fob thats Bluetooth and has a battery that lasts for like 6 months or more. Its called the Motorola keylink its like 20 bucks. I think they stock them at tmobile stores. Its meant for the same purpose youre looking for, to keep your phone unlocked when youre near it. Plus it has a button on it that when pushed will make your phone ring. And visa versa, an app for your phone to locate your keys. Pretty cool and cheap.
Just my personal opinion here, but battery cases are hideous and unnecessary under most, not all, circumstances. Flash a custom stockish rom, and a good kernel. Tweak the settings, customize the pulldown quick settings and put nfc in the pulldown. Put gps on device only. Only turn on nfc when youre gonna use it, via a quick setting pulldown. I get 6 hrs screen on time doing that, easily gets me through the day with full functionality.

What ROM are you using? Is the dark theme built in or is it something you flashed?

Im using cataclysm, with code blue kernel. The dark theme was flashed over cataclysm. Then I flashed youtube, hangouts, and playstore from team blackout.

I agree, I'm not really a fan overall (mainly because it makes the phone HUGE), but I bought it because I was frequently running out of battery around 6pm or so (alarm would go off to start my day at 7am). This was back on KitKat though. I actually haven't needed to turn on the external battery in a couple of months, more or less since Lollipop. I still keep it on though in case. :/

Notification light

So, I rooted the device and opened up EX kernel manager. Clicked on Misc in order to change the I/0 to row, and saw LED trigger on the bottom. Thought it was odd, so clicked it. Switched it to battery charging, connected my charger, and bam. Up top, right below the headphone jack above the earpiece. Not sure if it's rgb, but very happy about this. Can't wait to explore further and we get some custom ROMs out for this device.
I'm no dev, just looking forward to what's can be done with this
Yeah, I had seen a similar post on the Moto X (2013) xda! However, as far as I know, no custom rom made good use of it. Counting on you
I'd love to see the option of choosing which notifications light up the LED and which goes to Moto Display, since there isn't an Amoled on this device... Like priority notifications go on Display so you can interact, and things like games notifications on the LED.
But maybe I'm dreaming!
@dictionary : Thanks so much for the good news.
Been a great day for the MXP - rooted + LED notification all in 24 hrs.
Does it get any better than this!
I've had mine just under a week and so far have been really satisfied with my purchase.
I was missing Xposed and getting to grips with the lack of a LED for notifications plus realizing just how many ads I wasn't seeing before so it's a win win day for Motorola fans.

How have you gained root access?
Solved..
any difference in performance?

If you have root, you should try to install Light Flow (lite) and see if it can interface the LED on the phone. It was working on my Nexus 4 (with root). That would be a good reason for me to root my moto x play now...
Please report if you do.
Thanks!

Good news! Unlike osprey, where some hardware needed for LED notifications without the charger plugged in is missing, everything needed in hardware for LED notifications is present on lux. I got LED notifications working nicely on the stock ROM with my kernel (that is under development).
Great news! Looking forward to hear more.

Is it just the one color, or does it support multiple colors?

I think it's white only.
My kernel build with LED support is up on the original development section.
I don't think it's a notification led. It's too bright and intense that it could be a little dummy flash for frontal camera. I think that motorola released this device pretty soon and hide many components that were planed but not finished.

It's a notification light. They are used so that you know when your device is about to die on battery, or when it's off and next to dead. Otherwise you'd be hard pressed to know.

In the Moto X 2014 model, there was a green LED that would light up only if the phone was too dead to even light up the display to show the "dead battery" icon.
I'm guessing the same is true of the LED here, but luckily we have a kernel that uses the LED for notifications. Works really well with the Motorola flip cover for this phone!
Does someone has a picture of the LED working? I'm curious about it.

Notification Light

I was playing with CM12 earlier today and have learned that this Moto G does in fact have a notification light! I would love to actually have it used in the Stock rom (since it doesn't ever actually flash or do anything...). Does anyone know a way? None of those apps to customize it seem to work, none of them are for rooted phones either so I don't think they do much.
It's not so much of a notification light as a charging light; it's only usable when the phone is charging.
If you use an app such as Tasker: Go to Alert > Set Light > "charging".

There are absolutely apps for rooted phones, like lightflow, for example. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, this is 100% NOT a notification light, but a charge light. It's only white, not rgb, and only works while charging.

Flickerfree kernel

I love my new OP 6 phone, except one thing - PWM driven display below some brightness setting. Most things I read on the subject came from this wonderfull post (and kernel), which deals with the same thing on Samsung Galaxy. Is there any way we could achieve similar effect on our phones by some kernel / system tweaks? I would much rather deal with mura effects than eye strain, or at least drop the PWM - driven portion of the scale way down. I was trying to get started, poke around a little for backlight drivers and kernel source code, but I have little to none kernel development experience and knowledge so I got lost pretty quickly and do not know if it is even possible on Qualcomm platform.
Since I knew there is an app called Oled Saver on Google Play store, it prevents your brightness lower than certain value which may trigger the Flickering
Except that, the Mi 9 is rumored to get a DC Dimming for all the time update, most possibly tinkered with Its kernel, for our old obsoleted device, we could all depend on that OLED Saver App and tolerate the brighter display at night in order to prevent flickering
While DC dimming for all the time, is achieved more and more, hopefully we might see more new phones shipped with Officially DC dimming kernel, thus its Custom ROMs and users could all be able to utilize this flipper switch to save our eye from display flickering
Smurf Kernel has an option called 'Flicker free) in it's config file which should handle this problem

It's also overall a very good kernel, I use it since quite a time now

I second this, Smurf kernel actually implements the code from the kernel linked in the OP, if i'm not mistaken. Already read this from the Smurf thread.
And agreed, the kernel is very good !
Edit : Wait, i didn't see the OP date, why has this been dug up ?

So i read your post and overall i figured out that you have screen flickering issue when on low brightness. I had the same issue and additionally, it flickered alot when restarting/locking/unlocking the phone. I took mine to service centre and they said it's a hardware issue and replaced my display. No issues till now after that. This issue was also brought up in the oneplus community and even the bug hunters contacted me. At the end, the conclusion came as hardware issue.
Maybe yours is the same.

Well, seems like OnePlus guys read XDA Forums sometimes haha !
