I've got a Popcornhour box at home with movies on. It currently has SMB enabled so i can read/write from the PC to it. I've installed an SMB file browser on the transformer and can view the files remotely, but clicking on them just downloads the file to the transformer (where I can play it with rockplayer, etc).
Is there a way of being able to click the file and it starts streaming it so I can watch without having to wait while it downloads a 1gb file to the transformer at all?
cheers

Hi !
I want to share my files (videos, comics etc) in my computer without copy each file on my tablet.
I use EStrong file manager but if i explore my lan to watch a movie, when i click on a video file the file manager start to copy the file to SDcard.
I want avoid this, i want watch the movie directly from my pc. There is a way to solve this bad situation
I tried to use cifs manager to mount directory on my lan but i'm not able to do this. Somebody, help me !
I installed File Expert (free) with the File Expert SMB Mount Plugin (also free), and my Samba shares work flawlessly - I can stream movies with no issues.
Anothe good solution for streaming movies, music, etc. is via DLNA/UPnP (if your rig supports it). I find UPnPlay (free) absolutely fantastic for that.
Hi, thanks for your answer !!
I tried UPnPlay and it works well but i cannot see mkv files with it and also with dlna or upnp i'm not able to visualize subtitles (.srt and similar).
Can you confirm or i'm doing some mistake ?
Tnx for your help and time, man
P.S.
I want to explain better....I have shared my movies with windows media center catalog, it's correct ? Do you use another application to share your files (avi, mkv, subtiltles etc ) ?
I have installed the smb plugin for file expert but i can't mount anything because i don't have root privileges...
It's possible to root the eee pad now ? And it's safe ?
Please help me with the previous question also. Tnx !
Another option for viewing movies or listening to songs on the eee pad is to just use the Splashtop software in MyCloud>MyDesktop. Works pretty well for streaming stuff.

I've just run some tests, and while I see MKV's with no issues, unfortunately I can confirm I can't seem to visualize SRTs at all
And that's odd, because I use either MoboPlayer or Rock Player to watch movies (I prefer the latter), and both *should* support SRT... dunno, maybe I'm missing something here...
Apart from that, UPnPlay works perfectly for me - I just wish it had a more user-friendly interface, like Asus MyNet, which is almost useless (as it only uses the stock movie player, which doesn't support AVI/MKV/etc.) but has a much friendlier interface (all the servers constantly shown on the left, etc.)

I share them via Windows Media Center on my Win7 rig, plus I have a NAS and a standalone Media Player which each have their own DLNA servers (besides being shared via SMB).

That's very very odd, as I can fully access my network shares, but I have no root privileges! I'm not the tinkering kind of guy... too scared to brick my tablet to try rooting it...
Anyway, I just add them into the File Expert "network" tab, provide access credentials, and voila, accessible.

Mmm... it works, true, but I can't seem to have it run anything better than 1024x768 resolution.
My PC is set for 1920x1080, and as soon as I connect via MyDesktop, it goes to 1024x768, which is kinda awful.
I much prefer PocketCloud (a VNC client) or LogMeIn Ignition (a LogMeIn client) to connect to my PC. I have to scroll and/or pinch-zoom, but at least I can use all the real estate on the screen...

You can change the resolution to 1280x800 in the splashtop options. Sounds like you still have it set to the ipad resolution. My pc desktop is also 1920x1080x2(2 monitors) but it changes the resolution of the primary monitor pretty fast so it doesnt bother me. It doesnt look fantastic but the whole point of the exercise is to view stuff on the eee pad, on which it works great.
One option you might want to explore is to use a combination of the Air Video Server and Mirage Beta from the Android Market.
Air Video is an app on the iphone/ipad that I used for a long time (before switching to Android) and basically does on the fly transcoding on your PC to stream to your device. This means it can show all file formats without the need for conversion. i've tried the Air Video server/Mirage app out on my phone (HTC Desire) and it works very well. I've just noticed that the Mirage app has now been updated to support tegra processors/Honeycomb. I would try it out myself but I'm at work at the moment and can't install anything on my computer . Anyhow, just another option to consider...
I cannot mount SMB share from UPnPlay and I do not have root....
I am trying to stream divx from my NAS server that is DLNA compliant.

How are you streaming from Samba shares with File Expert? When I try to open an .avi file from the network, I can only open it with the Browser or Dolphin HD. (If I copy that same file to my Transformer, File Expert will offer Moboplayer as an application to open it with, though.)

I open File Expert, go to Network, click on the machine I'm interested in, click on the shared folder with the movies I wanna watch.
When I click on the .avi file, the Browser opens for a half-second, and then the system gives me the choice of which app to use to open the movie (in my case, Mobo Player or Rock Player).
This is one of the biggest uses I have for my tablet. I would like something like audiogalaxy but had the vlc stream and convert working on my Evo, but won't buffer on the transformer. Werid I know. Also tried using mobo player but it didn't play the mp4 as it fast forward through it. Didn't try any of my mkv files.

I would like to watch movies stored on my shared hard drive of computer desktop from the Asus transformer MyNet. I can see my share drive on the left hand side of the panel; but when I go to that drive, I could not see the SMB drive where I stored the movies in. Could someone help?
Cant say about My Net, but I can browse Samba shares just fine using Ghost Commander if that's useful info for you..
MyNet is a DLNA client, not a Samba or CIFS client. You need a DLNA server on your desktop in order to stream your media.
I use ES File Explorer and it works for copying to local disk. For direct viewing, UPnplay, Moboplayer and Mediatomb works very well.

Ditto. I use PS3 Media Server. Works very well.
I use serviio on Linux.
you can use Buzz player to browse and play avi files on SMB drives. however, mkv files will not play at decent quality. Buzz player on iOS does better on Android

I installed Ghost Commander and the SMB plug in; but still don't know how to connect with shared samba drives.
Same here, please anybody knows how to connects, let me know!
Try ES File Explorer... it supports SMB streaming and it doesn't copy the files anymore.
Works great with MoboPlayer
Hm.. that should be smart, I actually have Mobo player on my TF.
I only like the double view of Ghost commander, and ES is too much eyecandy for me.
Still, if anybody knows it, please help!
Hallo,
I'm trying to play video files (mp4) stored on my PCs with the stock app my-net.
I can see the PCs connected to the network (and even watch pictures) but I can't see movie list (and so, I cant play them).
Any idea? what I'm doing wrong?
I don't know why you can't see the videos, but I never had any luck trying to play videos over MyNet. If you want to stream videos to your TF, you might have to use that Plex app.
After repeatedly being frustrated with not being to play high profile MKV's and not getting subtitles with Plex, this is my solution to playing every single type of video that your PC can play.
Go to "MyCloud" app the specific program you want to use is the "MyDesktop" or splashtop. Go to the Asus web-site and go to the Eeepad support page. Download splashtop remote-desktop to your home PC and set it up. Go back to your transformer and set up the "MyDesktop" with your PC's IP and password information.
Remote desktop to your PC from your transformer. On my home network I am able to basically remote to my PC and play any video lag free. I know this is not a "streaming video" solution but this is the 100% surefire way to play everything you have. Hope this helps.
Mmm, that doesn't reallyhelp if one has a dnla enabled NAS.
I'm reallydisappointed by the videosupport on the transformer, my galaxy s2 does much better...

Upnplay and rockplayer. I can now access and watch (perfectly) all my divx collection on my nas drive
There is a very similar thread in the general section with more details.
1. Install upnplay (free)
2. Install moboplayer (free)
3. Install tegra packaged codecs for moboplayer to play almost every type of video file (free)
4. Profit!!! (not free)
Wondering if there is an app which can browse SMB shares on my network and could stream content from those directories? Not having much look with transcoding since my server isn't that fast.
Thank you!
I don't know that any will stream as your wanting, File manager HD and File expert both allow accessing SMB shares, but if you try to open a video it must copy to the device first. I personally have been using Upnplay + moboplayer, and I have Tvmobili running on my server. My server is running Win2k8 R2 with 2GB of RAM on an Atom 330 cpu (yes, one of those dinky netbook/nettop chips), so it may be worth a shot. I actually used to run exchange on that

Over here it doesn't. The browsing in the SMB-folders is fine, at home on my WHS server as well on the Windows server at work. But when I open a music or mediafile the browser opens and starts downloading and after that nothing happens: downloading stops and no file is opened.
Still File Expert is the SMB-filemanager that works the best for me.
I don't use SMB, but I stream MP3s and videos of all kinds via upnplay and moboplayer just like johantheolive. Works great.

This depends on which browser you use. When clicking on an SMB file in File Expert you should get to choose your browser (unless you have set some browser as default, in which case you need to clear this setting in the TF app config). Try e.g. Dolphin HD. It will allow you to open that link in a media player, go for Moboplayer, Rock player, or Little Player. Then streaming works OK, but you cannot seek in the stream.
I use AndSMB.

But you can watch the movie while copying to the transformer, only open the file on the transformer.
But you need more than 1GHz because the copying uses 30-50% of the cpu.
Hi there, I am a complete Noob when it comes to Android.
M I have a home system where I have, through Network Magic, three Windows based laptops connected and using media files stored on my Desktop.
I can't seem to find the shared files on the TF.
Network magic shows the TF connected and available to see the files, but on the TF in folders, it only gives me the internal folders and My net only shows media files on the TF and gives me the option in settings for a Digital media server, nothing else.
Windows Media Player on the Desktop (vers 12) is set to stream files and share.
Am I missing something? or perhaps and app to alllow me to play media from my hard drive on the desktop to the TF?
thanks in advance
Well, Interesting. A file Manager programme "File manager HD" HAS seen the home network and let me connect to it! Just trying to run an avi file from the network ATM. It seems to download it to the TF...
Android is so much different to both Windows and Apple....
This will do me fopr now, but what I really wanted to be able to do was stream from my Media source rather than have to d/l each music file and film
