I'm thinking of getting a Transformer and dock, and want to use it to backup photos from a fast compact flash card (via a card reader) to an external 2.5 inch hard drive.
I'm pretty sure this will work, but wondered what sort of transfer speeds I would get. Using a computer I can get about 23 MBytes per second from a SanDisk Extreme IV card (about 1 photo a second ).
If it is quick enough, it will save me having to take a computer on holiday with me.
Could somebody (or lots of people) run a test or two and post up some results please ? A comparison with equivalent tests performed with a pc would also be useful to gauge relative performance.
Regards,
M
Can anyone help with this ?
Just a quick test to see how fast the transfers can go ?
Thanks in advance,
Matthew

I have just bought a 512MB card & wish to transfer a 133mb film to it how do I send straight to the card using activesync
Thanks Graham
sd card reader is the only way i know of.
If you want to start transferring large files, you 'must' get a card reader. They're dirt cheap now and will transfer your files in a whiz. It will take what seems like a lifetime doing it through AS.
If you must se AS, right click on the green AS symbol in the systray and select explore, from there you can navigate to the memory card and just drag/dropv the file as always in windows.
Heed the previous warnings though, it will take a long time; a card reader is about £6 and will speed the transfer up by orders of multitude.
Also, if you are going to be transferring a lot of big files you could try my new software which is underdevelopment, it sunchronises any files on the PPC to the desktop including memory cards, and will very soon have the capability to do the sync over a card reader to the memory card.

Thanks all
Unsure if it is the done thing here but I'd like to thank all those who have helped - I used the Explore feature as I didn't have a card reader & you were spot on as it took ages.
The 1st time I tried it crashed half way through I then had to reinstall Activesync which then interfered with my cordless mouse so I had to reinstall that.
On the 3rd attempt I finally got it done so I shall be buying a £ 6 card reader ASAP as it took 2 hours to sort LOL..
cheers again Graham
Hi All
I have a xda IIs ( previously owned XDA 1 & 2 ). I have started encoding movies/tv shows which I watch on my phone and I was wondering if anyone knew of some software that would speed up the process of copying the .avi file to the memory card on the PPC ? Activesync is really *slow* so I've starting using a card reader ... but this is something else to carry around so I'm thinking there must be something that would let me write directly to the SD card at a higher speed.
Thanks in advance
Jeff
Hi wertert!
You should check out this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=17514
They discuss a couple of programs that bypass ActiveSync and let you use your device as USB mass storage device. (you don't have to install anything on the pc)
I also noticed that the transfer speed depends on the SD itself. Older cards seem to be slower.
Anyway, hope this helps. Good luck!
When formatting hard drive, what's the best allocation size for the TF?
Are you talking in response to the hard mod for an actual HDD in the dock?
Or more along the lines of the MicroSD?
Either way, the only way to best determine the proper allocation size for your storage is to find out the average file size for your entire collection of files you plan on storing on said storage medium...
I store mostly movies, audio books, and a Windows toolkit, I dont remember what it was at the time I last checked, but for optimum performance I went with 64kb blocks, I had forgotten to do this a good 2 weeks after I got my TF, and once I did I noticed that when I opened MortPlayer for my audio books it resumed faster then before, and playing videos going from selection to playing was faster as well...
Then again, there isnt a single MicroSD who has an exact mirror image! I have multiple cards, and no matter the class, matching or not, size matching or not, or even MFG (IE 2 identical cards, 2 16GB Class 4 from my HD2's)
If I where you, and if I had a really good media reader for my PC (something not UNDER $20... dont ask, they suck, nuff said), id take my MicroSD (or a good dock in the case of an actual HDD) and run it through CrystalDiskMark a few times each time after formatting it in the desired partition layout/allocation size...
Then again, do you want IOPS or R/W to be your main concern...
Whatever, I am falling asleep here while typing this so im sure its going to be a disaster to read +/ understand... Maybe if I have time before work in the morning Ill check the thread and try to clarify...
by the way, +/ is AND OR... just like w/ is with and w/o is without... er + is always and or plus anyway... / is the or... ORRRRRR (dear god i need to go to sleep before I hurt myself or my reputation anymore with this post...)
Hi, I wonder if there is any cheapest one that have USB host support.
For recommendations and advice, I just want to copy my xD card to phone system ( preferably have microsd) where I like to organise folders there easier then connect my 64 GB to transfer photo from there, the power is no problem as I can provide external one.
I do have Sensation but I gave up hope as I believe there's no support for USB host for sensation after some mighty searching.
This is reason why I want to travel light and leaving my Asus A7J at home and use my mobile to transfer data to USB. As I will be going to Aistraila for three weeks and I don't want to bring laptop for transferring data as I got IPad ( No jailbreak on it and I DON'T WANT IT)
Thanks any help in advance
So I recently discovered the awesomeness that is Twonky... So while beaming a movie to my xbox, it dawned on me... Could I usb my external hard drive to my gs3 and beam the movies on that to the xbox? Anybody ever tried this and have any ideas or tips to make this work?
You need a powered hub to provide enough power to spin the hard drive, the S3 can't push that much back out.
You need a fat32 filesystem on the hard drive - android can't see ntfs if coming from windows base.
The results become more wonky the larger the drive.
Mass media on a fat32 filesystem is not so fun, especially video.
That was a very well thought out and precise answer. So my follow up will be, any way to make it work? Or any better ideas to pull the video files from the hard drive?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I've been using one of these: Seagate Wireless HDD
...but haven't had a chance to use it with the S3 yet. I did just get the new version of their app for it ( you don't need it, makes it easier though).
The way it works is the HDD creates its own wifi network and then you connect to that. Downside to this is you lose wifi internet while talking to the HDD.
Fantastic to have 500 gigs of immediately available storage in my pocket. The battery is decent even today and I got it right around launch.
First generation of self-contained wireless storage, so I expected it to be a lot more buggy and hit-or-miss then it is.
I had issues streaming video to tv on my last device, but there were issues with that beyond anything that may or may not have been caused by the device or it's app. Mostly gingerbread and htc's take on it being the problem.
Having installed the app on the S3, and just updated to the JB OTA, i'm looking forward to playing with it and using the MHL out to my tuner.
----
Otherwise, though, I don't have any video game consoles, so i'm kinda in the dark about how or what happens when you communicate with something like an xbox - also haven't heard of twonky before this thread and haven't looked it up.
----
I would absolutely love MHL and OTG in one OEM cable. That would give OTG with it's own power and maybe allow dropping the powered hub from required stuff to drag around with you. Who knows when or if we'll get it, if anyone's involved in making that happen beyond the general consensus of everyone wanting it.

I am curious about the best way to manage a video collection and in it's presentation. I have a ton of video from digital cameras and android devices over the last decade. I'd love to be able to casually present it on displays I come across at residences and such. The whole "bring a bag full of adapters and cables" bit precludes it happening a lot.
The S3 really opens up the use of the memory card as a memory card, what with the internal SD being a safe haven for your apps data so you don't break them when you swap cards. This makes it finally useful to carry a handful of sdcards with different stuff on it.
I have a 64 gig card in my 32 gig S3, so that's covered me on the video i've taken - however - I am all for learning how to make it work from non-local storage (like a hard drive, or the wireless one I have).
----
Every step like bringing the data into the device with an sdcard, or having the hard drive be wireless or whatever like that is a cheater step, though. The end goal would be to be able to utilize any random usb hard drive you came across - so if your friend has a hard drive with video on it, how do get that in your hand and make the S3 present that video to the display in front of you both?
----
I am not sure when I can get around to playing with the wireless HDD and video output, but sometime over the next few weeks is a likely time frame for my curiosity to make time to find out. I'll see about finding this thread to toss some details about how it went when I get the chance. Meantime, that is only one avenue to goal - what others can we come up with?
Edit - also the most recent firmware claims to be able to allow wifi internet access and access to the drive at the same time, so maybe the biggest turnoff was handled. Now really can't wait to find time to try it out.
