It depends what type... I know one where you'd almost have to drain it but not all the way then fully charge it would make the battery life longer than having its life cut short.....

Try this technique which I used on SE XPERIA X10:
Charged the phone to 100% and while still plugged to the charger remove the battery wait 5 seconds put the battery back unplug the phone switch it back on and plug back into the charger. Ur battery should now show 88% charge not 100%. will wipe the battery stats as well when I will fully charge to see if it makes a difference.
Need to fully discharge the battery at least once a month until the phone off .. then you load up to 100%, and doing what was said above, remove the battery, and turns the charge again for up to 100%

In spite of reading a bit one sees immediately
A simpler way is just to use Battery Calibration app, it can be found on the market.
Is it a bad thing to charge the battery at 50% still?

I've always said this simple statement about LiIon: Charge early and often.
Do you need to plug the phone in every time you get off a call? No. Do you need to worry about it dropping below 80%? No. Just charge as often as is convenient. Sitting at a desk for a hour working on something? Charge. Driving for more than 15m? Charge.
I think if you obsess too much you might wind up with USB connector problems from all the cycles on the connector itself, but intelligent use of the above statement should get you the most out of your battery.

er.......what?
i believe that you have to charge your battery all the way full then use all the power until it dies then you can charge it back again
but not sure

This is the exact opposite of what this article says.

conditioning the battery the first time you get a new phone also helps, alot of us just charge for a while them use it. all my phones i let them charge for a full 24 hours right after i get them
My battery only last 6 hours
Ugh, why don't people read the article BEFORE they comment?

Ehh, doesn't the charger uncharge when the battery is full? Like a safety thing?

Some articles say that one battery life cycle is used up everytime when a full charge is done. Other articles say that one battery life cycle is used each the battery is connected to the charger.
I have not seen one article that shows the truth with facts.

No offence but I always found this to be stupid reasoning.
What if you leave home with a quarter full battery and you get caught in the middle of a natural disaster (earthquake as an extreme example) and need to keep in contact with rescuers after being stuck in a building for 2 days?
Personally, I always charge my phone/laptop whenever convenient.

The only problem that your battery lasts only for 6 hours is due to too much charging...So when you will buy a new battery then make sure that only charge your battery when it will remain only 10%...And try to charge your battery with phone switched off..
Charge little and often, try to avoid deep discharge/charge cycles.
Back in the days of NiCd batteries there was the posibility of memory effect where if you didn't do a discharge/charge the battery wouldn't hold as much charge.
NiMH batteries do not suffer this, but discharge/charge cycles were required because when they started being used very few people had smart chargers so had to discharge to be able to time when to stop without overcharging, and also due to confused information pulled over from NiCds.
Top up charges are better for them too.
Lithium batteries also don't have memory effect, and are better off with top up charges.
Ask yourself this:
What would stress the battery more; running 1A through it for 10 minutes or 1 hour?
Also, as the battery discharges, its voltage drops so the current drain has to increase to compensate, discharging the battery even quicker (remember how capacity graphs drop off quickly?)
Say your phone needs 2W to run, with a 4v battery that's a drain of 500mA (P=VI)
When the battery has dropped to 3.5v then to produce 2W it takes approx 571mA.
batt problem
how to keep my batt good?
I've always just charged my phones overnight while I sleep. Never seen ill effects. If I don't make it home that night my phone still lasts through the next day.
It's not like that battery is irreplaceable. Go get a new one if your battery is nearing the end of it's life. By then you would have probably moved on to a new phone.

skimmed a few parts, but thanks for the read mate, learned tons.
as others allready mentioned, there are many different suggestions how to take care of the battery. I usualy reload the baterry only if the capacity is <= 5%, without unpluging it before it reaches 100%.
thanks for the info!
hi guys
I have always been wondering what to do with the battery after purchasing a phone. normally its about 50% charged and im not sure if i should let it drain normally or just charge it up straight after i get the phone out or something?
i know that with the old batteries u supposed to charge the 1st time about 12h but dont think its a way to go in the later batteries?

Hi
I'm new to android and I got Nexus S... but i'm facing little problem with it right now... it's with the battery... The Nexus S seems to be a battery hunger... it takes to much of battery... I relised that there is a lot of application that its running and i diidn't run them !! why is that happening ??
Is there is a way to stop these application from being run, and why there are running bytheway ?? I didn't run them so that they keep starting every time i kill them(using advanced task killer)...
I hope there is a way to save battery and the most important thing is to stop the application that aren't being used from starting...
Thanks alot.....
it's normal to eat that much battery
you don't really need a task killer, unless you have apps that hungs
Get a wall charger and a spare battery or two. The wall charger charges the battery to a full 100% and you will get significantly better battery life.

I didn't calculate it... but it seems that it will give me up to 8-10 hour for normal use.. which actully not that much even if the phone idle...
before, i was using iphone, and its battery was much better than the one in the Nexus S...
I don't know what to do....
8-10 hours sounds pretty good for normal use.

That's not what I mean. Get a dedicated battery charger and a spare battery. Charge your batteries independent of the phone in the battery charger. The phone when charged with the OEM charger or a USB cable does not allow the battery to ever reach full charge and the only solution is a dedicated wall charger.
You can also check in Settings>About Phone>Battery Use to see what is using the bulk of your battery over the the course of the day. Gives you a graph as well which can be tapped on to give further details.
After buying the phone (factory charged) my girlfriend and I plugged the Chacha into the computer for a while to transfer songs and some files. Then we ran the battery down to empty by playing some angry birds and left it to charge until green (around 6-7 hours i think)
Should we not have plugged it in at all and let it run down? I didnt think it would be a problem since my Optimus One can calibrate the battery any time but I just read that not all Chachas are rootable. Havent found out if hers is rootable though...
Is there a way to recalibrate the battery as of right now?
Wait, what?
What do you mean by recalibrate the battery? For how long do you have the phone?
We bought it yesterday but thinking back to what the guy said before we left, i think we screwed up somewhere by charging it for 20 mins (while transferring data) then letting it run out of power, then charging for 6 hours until the light went green.
Should we have let it run out of power then charged for 6 hours straight until the light went green? And to top it all off, the phone has the dumb Dialer bug Hope FastReboot helps with that since no root access means no apps that can restart the phone with the one touch.
Well first of all calibration, if the guy had any idea what he was talking about means to discharge your phone 'till it's off then charge it for min 8hrs. But this process hasn't been used since smartphones came into the scene.
The calibration now is performed after a few charge/discharge cycles. Also if you plan to charge your phone, use the provided power plug charger and not from the PC/laptop USB.

So it's an app that does the same thing as CWM. Since it works on rooted phones only, CWM is already installed and wipe battery stats is a CWM option. So this renders this app useless
Oh alright. So i'll just tell her to wait it out with full discharge -> full charge cycles? How many cycles would that usually take? Right now she says its on low batt after just 8 hours or so. Stupid Dialer bug...

It's not just the dialer issue. There are a lot of useless apps that run in the background. It depends what your gf is using the phone for. Get S-OFF and latest SW versions.
3-5 cyles.
Alright thank you ^_^ I'll get her to implement the fixes for the Dialer Bug and see what happens. And i'll ask my friend's brother if he has an xtc clip in his shop.
3full charge & discharge will be enough. as for the dailer issue is not much of draining the battery. battery drain occur most is auto sync with mails or fb & some those apps will frequently need to update itself. 3G/BT wont drain much battery you can last a good day or 2day without charging.

not much you can do about dialer bug - save battery by
- turn off facebook chat on fb website and phone
- turn off sync for stock news weather
- turn off some call settings (quiet ring on pickup, pocket mode, flip for speaker) which solves dialer issue (but not for me!)
