anyone else have problems overclocking? - Captivate General

I've never had success overclocking my cappy. I've tried multiple kernels all with no luck. I just applied the platypus kernel on cm7 and have tried multiple settings and have yet to have a crash. Any thoughts or anyone else have any success stories?

I've been lucky to have been able to overclock up to 1.4 GHz, but anything after that my phone would just freeze and crash.
One thing to remember is that all phones react differently to different setups and because one phone can do it does not mean another phone can.

most sgs phones have no issues at 1200 but there seems to be stability issues in undervolt kernels that different phones may or may not have difficulty working with. above 1200 some phones can some cant, many will see 1300 with slight instability and others will go all the way up to 1500 and never have an issue. micro processors are built on structures that are just a few nanometers and it is imposible to make them preform exactly the same, a nanometer or 2 on a particular semiconductor can make all the difference. it is not untill you get down to molecular sizes that you can assure identical structures. that is still years in the future.
the cm7 kernels use differnent cpu drivers and and governor settings. different developers have different tequniques so you have have found a more stable kernel.

1200 works good for everyday use for me but when I hit the 1300 range its all downhill from there.....but honestly in my opinion there is really no reason to run that fast other then for scores! I run mine around 800 honestly!

Tegrak Overclock is a neat app that lets you go up to 1.3GHz on just about any kernel I believe since I was using it on the stock Froyo kernel until I recently changed to speedmod. I haven't tried kernels created for O/Cing yet though.

Back in the days of Froyo 1.5ghz was easy for me, never had any freezes or reboots. Right now Im Running Mosaic 2 with ExistZ 0.1.6 kernel at 1.2ghz and its never given me any problems either. Maybe Im just lucky. I guess just keep trying different things man. Hopefully CM7 works out for you.

Can't overclock my Nexus S

Hey all,
I've tried on multiple occasions now to overclock my phone, using both the Trinity & Netarchy (1.1) kernel, everytime I have done so however it will put me into a bootloop, sometimes not getting past the nexus boot animation or lock screen, I'm sure that I'm doing everything right
1. Wipe data/cache
2. Flash ROM (I've tried Stock, Bionic, CM & Modaco, which I use currently.)
3. Boot
4. Flash kernel
5. Boot
I've no idea what's going on, I've just about given up, perhaps I've been handed a crappy piece of silicon, should have returned it before it was too late
Any help appreciated anyways, peacee.
Instead of flashing the ROM and then immediately applying the kernel, let the phone completely reboot. Then go back into recovery and flash the new kernel. Should work.

I've tried Netarchy 1.1 > Modaco & Cyanogen (1.0 was actually working but following the thread it wasn't actually applying the overclock )

Have you tried Netarchy 1.2 yet? I've had a lot of issues with CM7, including kernels. Sometimes I would have to just flash the kernel 3 times and then it would work. Now I'm using MoDaCo and it is infinitely more stable. I've noticed the trinity kernels tend to be a little more volatile and hit or miss than the Netarchy one seems to be. If it is really of grave concern to you, if you live in an area where a return would be easily possible and if you are within your return period, return it and try a different slice of silicon
I've actually had this phone since release date, sadly I am out of the return period, I don't really mind all that much, this phone has been amazing coming from a constantly slow and crashing iPhone 3G.
I've just downloaded the new kernel from Netarchy, it seems to address stability issues regarding voltage, which I think it might be. I'll flash it and update this post in a second.
EDIT: Hasn't helped seems to be looping at the Google screen now.

It's so frustrating when people are posting pictures of 4000+ score on quadrant and I get a bootloop instead. I really hope they can tweak it so that people like us can run at these higher frequencies.

Have you tried Netarchy's kernel? A link to his thread is in my sig and it works great for me. It will boot you to 1GHz then using SetCPU (which can be attained for free on XDA, legally, just search for it. The Dev posted it) you can up the clock speed. You should take note however that the Nexus S is damned fast stock. I typically run my phone at 1.2GHz unless I want to show off to my friends and then I bump it up hehe

I'm using netarchy's kernel right now at 1.3ghz but as soon as i go to 1.4ghz it crashes which is slightly annoying. 1.3ghz is much more stable now though.

Odd...for my own testing purposes I've been running at 1.4GHz (testing battery life vs other clock speeds) since yesterday and haven't had a single crash. What ROM are you using?
I'm using modaco r10 and correction to my earlier post, 1.3ghz on netarchy's kernel isn't much better than trinity. Ran Nfs shift for 5 seconds and it rebooted.

Hmm, I used his 1.1v kernel on MoDaCo but never the new kernel so I can't speak to its stability.
Some phones are able to run up to 1.4-1.5 without issues whereas some aren't due to hardware limitations (different batch,build quality etc).
Most however, from what i read in the forums, are able to clock up to 1.3 with either kernels (CFS or BFS, versions types etc) without facing the issue of random rebootings.
Personally, i'm only able to clock up to 1.3. I'll get random reboots if i run smartbench with a 1.4. Quadrant is fine for me at 1.4 though. Was able to get ~3500-3600 scores but in terms of real life situations, i can't tell the difference between a 1.3 to 1.4.

seems my thread is still alive I flashed the newest version of netarchy the other day, I can manage 1.2-1.3 quite happily atm - I have to manually use SetCPU after each boot though, if I set on boot it will loop

I was browsing the Optimas 2x forum today and ran into an awesome kernel with GPU overclock. which sounds pretty cool to me. also the dev mentioned something about overclocking "system bus" which improvers memory/2D/3D/etc. i think someone in this forum should take a look into this KERNEL and try letting us taste some of this goodness.

The person to ask this to is Morfic. He's all about tweaking bus speeds to improve not only cpu but gpu performance as well. But much of what you've already requested has been incorporated

G2X
CPU overclock is something that makes sense for us right now but what would a GPU overclock get us? To me thats just something that will lower the life of our phone with no real reward until games come out that our phone can't run. Right now our phone can run pretty much all games at full speed.
gpu overclocking would be sweet... now my question would be has anyone tried to load Optimas 2x kernel/software on the g2x since they are pretty much the same hardware(in theory you would think it would work)... i might even try to load this kernel onto my phone when i get home from work so if i mess anything up ill have my gear to fix it

I remember reading a while ago that GPU/System bus overclocking was attempted by some kernel dev, then later on, the dev realized through extensive testing that GPU and system bus clocks were locked, the changes to the kernel source had no effect (hardwired). Now this was a few months ago when I was reading up on Tegra kernel development before I got my G2x. Now all these could have been obsolete, and maybe now someone has found a way to do the above via kernel source updates.
Another issue that most people don't mention here and many people have been guilty of, is the GPL issue. The guy who supposedly did this overclocking has not published his kernel source code anywhere (GPL/XDA rules issues), so no one can examine what he did and prove that it worked....

Someone in another thread tried this and it messed up their baseband. A restore doesn't fix it apparently.
Big rush dog, the tiamat kernel guru and Guy getting engadet headlines for oc the xoom to 1.7 ghz has gpu oc in his kernels. I will be honest though, I can't tell the difference except maybe video streaming works a little smoother. I personally don't think it is worth the devs time...

To be honest the GPU overclocks aren't all that beneficial. There is a little bit of a speed bump (I managed to get the highest score on nenamark2 for example). But the difference is was 27fps vs 32fps. If someone is interested in incorporating that into the g2x I'll be happy to show them the changes I've made. I haven't released the source because I'm lazy but there isn't too much to it.
Actually, if you look at the voltKernel sources for the O2X you'll see the same changes there.

Yes, superficial benchmarks like quadrant can be pushed to 5400 only with max cpu oc.
However, did you notice how 1.2 thru 1.5 gets you the same fps with no added benefit than more heat created?
Pushing other things other than cpu should let us remove bottlenecks and not tighten them up.
If you want your G2x to life 20yrs, 1.5ghz is not the way to go.
I have no kernel ready for release, to notice changes, I stuck to 1.5ghz, but the final result will be more likely 1.2 or 1.3ghz.
Maybe with a "don't hold my hand, give me freedom or give me death" DBU version at 1.5Ghz later.
I'm not shy to increase vcore on a SoC. But unlike the Nexus S, this thing gets HOT, fast.
Avetny pointed out that thread, I'll see if fallout hit something I have missed so far.
The clocks get compared to chip defaults in many places, choosing the smaller of the two, so it's just tedious replacing them with sane defaults, unless I stick to my current approach of offsets instead of absolutes.
We'll see.
That's also the reason I don't update my kernel often. Right now commits in cm git are only preparatory, config changes that made things smoother I already used.
I'll release something if they finish their version of BLN.
Or if I'm happy with gpu/bus/ram oc/tweaks.

You should talk to Fallout0 he seems like he got past the system bus/GPU locked issue. both of you can maybe learn something new from each other. & it would be awesome if the both of you can work on a kernel together.
Wouldn't a higher clocked G2x cause more heat? Heat being the reason this things reboots so often? Maybe a slower G2x is the way to go.
Would overclocking the gpu help run nds4droid any better? What else would ocing the gpu do? Everything seems to be very fast as it is lol

Pushing cpu more I don't see useful other than keep up with your buddy's Nexus S' quadrant scores and make sure your hands stay warm in a cold Chicago winter.
I build kernels usually when things stutter or otherwise annoy me. The pushing the OC usually comes by request of those who just want more more more.
I do like to remove bottle necks.
The hardwired clocks. Well the.cpu ones are hardwired too.
The gpu/bus oc works, until boost and throttling kick in, where again values are compared to hardwired values. using offsets after the comparison would be the way around without killing boosting and throttling.
Guess main thing that stopped me is the heat at 1.5ghz, and the frowns over 1.2ghz and 1.3ghz kernels, without further "what else is in there"
Still hoping fallout can share what he/she has, it'll help making this a reality, sooner.

Anyone else having tons of lag?

Just a quick question for you guys: I recently purchased an Infuse from the marketplace here, and so far I've gotten an absolute TON of lag using the device. I've flashed Infused 1.5 and Bionix with the Infusion kernel, and so far the lag has gotten better, but it's not totally cleared up. I'm definitely not new to Android, but I haven't seen anything like this before. I know that Quadrant isn't a reliable benchmark, but I'm scoring about 1900, OCed to 1.5Ghz.
Just to give an example: I'm using desktop visualizer to add some custom icons to my screen. When I go to select an icon image, it's fine, but it freezes for about 90 seconds when a list of my apps comes up.
Anyone experience this before? And if so, how did you solve it? If this was widespread, I'd imagine there would be complaints all over here.
Which app are you using to set your overclock settings, how many clock speeds do you have enabled, are you under or over volting, and *which governor* are you running?
I have seen some similar problems here when I was using conservative governor with poor choices of clock speed. Right now Infusion 1.5.2 kernel has some issues with not liking the ondemand governor, so I reduced my number of available clock speeds so it would jump to the top more quickly while using the conservative governor.
Also, did you use either the return to stock, or the ultimate unbrick flash before you flashed your ROM? If it was a used Infuse, I would do one of the above before I start looking anywhere else, then reflash your rom/kernel of choice.
I'm using SetCPU with the OnDemand gov (400/1500), no undervolting. I have a profile set to underclock it to 300/700 on conservative when I'm charging, but that's about it.
I think I'm going to use GTG's unbrick/return to stock and root the thing myself, I figured I'd ask before I did anything drastic. My UI is a ***** to set up every time, and I hate wiping because of it.
Just a quick note, I've had some serious lag using the oc kernel... Like real world usage got worse after oc'ing

Although it is counter intuitive to the way governors should work I have seen less lag on Infusion 1.5.2 when I use conservative. The ondemand governor seems to be having some issues with the most recent update. If you flash back to 1.0 Infusion you get a max overclock of 1.4, but it is much more stable IMHO. Also FFC is presently broken in 1.5.2 and will hard freeze the phone (battery pull).
I'm debating flashing back to community kernel, but I am going to wait and see how long it takes my battery to drain because I am using some undervolting. You might try using conservative governor and only enable 100, 400, (800 or 1000), (1200 or 1300) and 1500. Honestly the infuse is my first smartphone, but I've tinkered with desktop hardware the last 15 years. It literally amazes me everytime I pull the battery out of this phone and feel how light it is.
I also used the desktop vis app and yes it lagged when chosing apps however it seemed to get better after three or four times but that seems to be the only place it lags for me im using the oc-uv kernal 1.0 clocked to 1.4 seems bulletproof compared to later versions im getting great speed and batt life with this kernal but i had the same lag in the same event as you

I'm going to try bringing it back to stock and re-rooting it myself, if only because I trust myself with adb//scripts/rooting, and I'm hesitant to trust someone I don't know. Lag has gotten a lot better since switching to conservative, OCing to 1.6 and undervolting a tad, but it still lags when opening apps or scrolling through long lists. Desktop Vis is of course, still a nightmare.
Oh well, I'll report my findings tomorrow I guess. Hopefully I'll be scoring higher than the 1700 I just pulled in quadrant.

I'm 100% stock & get lag also. Definitely in the situation you describe, when the app list comes up for adding shortcuts to any homescreen. Takes forever for that list to come up. Secondly, simply from running for a while, i have to kill all the apps using the built in task manager in order to get it to run smoothly again. It's like it never closes an app. I'm new to android, but guessing this is a problem inherit to android. Can't see how samsung or at&t could have screwed this soo badly to cause it to never close an app. Hoping memory management is better in Gingerbread.
Blario, you're new to Android, so you need to read up on how memory management works with Android. It's not SUPPOSED to kill apps, and that's not what's lagging your phone. In your case, I'd think it was more of a case of WHICH apps you were running.

If you're on stock and after a week or two your phone gets slow as hell (mine did), install a Voodoo lagfix kernel. All the current ROMs include it.

I don't do much. Twitter, "Web" (some mozilla stock ish), SMS, phone, Android Market app (browsing), and Maps. I've had it lag up using only those. Far less often, I use Yelp... that's about it.
Not supposed to kill apps? When I kill them it fixes the problem. Maybe it *should* be killing apps?? If its supposed to flush their state to disk... it seems to be doing a poor job at it.
I would be suspicious of your microSD card (if you have one). Do you know what class it is? Have you tried removing it and performing the same functions in which you see lag?

It's the stock card that came with the phone. Any way to check? The apps are installed to it... so removing it I wouldn't have the apps available anymore.
A little update: I returned back to stock and re-rooted. I installed 3E, then CWM, then threw on Infused 1.5 and Infusion, OCed to 1.6Ghz and slightly undervolted (about 25-100mv along the range) using SetCPU.
As of right now, it still lags on occasion, but not as bad as it did. Quadrant is giving me a whopping 1300 average score, with a low of 800 and a high of 1600. This is just pathetic.

I still have random reboots....

Will these ever go away on my nexus s? I have gotten them in everything from stock 2.3, cyanogenmod 7, stock ICS, oxygen, and every single ICS rom I have used. I understand some software bugs take a while to find but I have had this bug for over a year, will it every get a fixed? (Or is this not a software bug but an actual issue with my phone?)

Nope. I usually run 200 mhz minimum and 1200 max for my cpu. On stock I also ran stock volts.

Well, you're running an overclock... Try running without.
CM7 has a sleep of death/reboot bug, so try another ROM not based on CM7 too.
Highly recommend Oxygen 2.3.2 coupled with Franco 08.12.2011 GB kernel.
If you're interested in ICS ROM, give AOKP ROM and Matr1x kernel a try. It's rock stable for me. I just rebooted to flash the new build, but before that it lasted for couple weeks for me without rebooting. Link to AOKP ROM is in my sig.

There's your problem. Perhaps increase the voltage? Your phone may not be able to handle the frequency without extra voltage.
There should be no random reboots if you never touched anything kernel related. If so, then bear the consequences.
I've been using CM9 v2.2 for about 3 months now haven't overclocked or undervolted and haven't had any "random" reboots ever.
I'd highly recommend the Androxide ROM along with Air Kernel. I've been running this combo overclocked to 1200 without any voltage setting changes for a decent amount of time.

I second that. Usually OCing requires raising voltages across the board. I use +25mV (arm and int). If you're suing a matr1x kernel that's even more reason to raise voltages, because afaik that kernel is undervolted by default.

If you are having problems then roll everything back to stock... its not good enough to say you have run every rom , yet fail to mention you OC. What other tweaks do you run? Deep Idle?
I'd bet if you flash CM9 with no tweaking it, it will be fine.

Or just about *ANY* rom for that matter. First ensure you can run it stable without OC, UV, didle, mods, themes etc then, by all means, go ahead and tweak to your hearts's content.
Overclocking to 1200mhz CPU only does NOT require extra voltage across the board, but possibly a boost at the 1200mhz voltage. Each frequency runs at a different, changeable voltage which has nothing to do with all the others. LiveOC, however, raises the frequency of each step and as such generally requires a boost in voltage across the board or thereabouts.
As for the problem the OP is having, who knows. Could you describe any specific things you've done, though? Full wipes (detail what you wipe), titanium backup restores, etc.
First thing i would be trying now is to do a full wipe (factory/data reset, format /boot, format /system), flashing either stock 2.3.6 or 4.0.3 and installing only necesseties and try for a week or so. If there are still reboot problems, describe them and hopefully i can give you some useful things to try. If you had this problem before the 1 year mark you could have probably gotten the phone fixed/replaced under warranty, though. If it is now over a year i'm afraid that's too late though.

ALWAYS on stock, unrooted, right now 4.0.3 OTA. Since 4.0.3 random reboots, w/o any culprit cause I can find..
So, I guess, has nothing to do with ROM, voltage, solar storms, etc..
Well this is all bullcrap. . . i installed CM7.0.1 and CM7 RC1 and the latest ICS from CM team and her phone either randomly reboots or switches off totally while charging in the night.
Its got bugger all to do with the kernel because i used the standard kernel with all the CM7 & CM9 roms and the same things happen over and over.
Also the OC'ing idea is BS, i don't OC my nexus S or hers and even mine suffers random reboots.
there has to be some code somewhere thats not behaving a sit should and google never sorted it and CM team never found it, or the hardware is just ****ty in this hand set.
Have you tried other ROM besides CM7? I remember when I flashed CM7 for the first time. My phone never liked it, it was all bugs for me. I even noticed that OC'ing would generate problems on any ROM.
I just ran away from CM7 and OC'ing.
Try Oxygen ROM (or stock as they stated before) with all set up to defaults and test for a while.

I admit I had reboots with cm7' but with latest cm9 nightly I have none. Stock kernel stock oc and stock voltage with deep idle off

The update was pulled for many reasons. Try stock GB or Oxygen ROM and enjoy life without freeze, sleep of death or reboot...

[Q] rooted xoom not overclocking???

Hi, i have searched the forums, but haven't been able to find an answer, simply put i don't believe my xoom is overclocking. I have been testing it with an app called neocore, but have tried quadrant as well. It doesn't matter if i am at 1000 or 1700 Neocore always says that my xoom runs at between 34-36 fps, which is the same as when it was bonestock, quadrant is the same. No change in animation speed or results no matter what i have set the clock too. I currently have eos nightly 77 for 4g on my xoom, I was using the stock kernel that came with the rom, and recently downloaded the.3.0.5 tiamat overclock kernel, which after flashing think it was the same(I am a noob). I was originally trying to use android overclock to adjust my settings, now have completely uninstalled it and using eos's settings, no change. What am i doing wrong, or have missed?

For increased smoothness in animation, etc, I believe it is the overclocked gpu that helps as opposed to the cpu. Not all the eos kernels are overclocked. Quadrant score appears to be meaningless. Believe me, the eos kernels permit overclocking. What governor are you using? Is your setting stable?
I have it currently at interactive, after you mentioned the governer, i put it to performance and ran the neocore benchmark to see what would happen, 38.2. Well if it requires a gpu overclock that would make sense that i am not noticing a difference with the apps i am using. But raises another question,what is a overclocked cpu good for? More apps running at once? My overclock is ALLOT more stable with 77, i was previously on 74. Before it would get glitchy allot more often, and random reboots on anything above 1000. 1400 and i was having to watch the temperature, 1500 seemed to work the best, but still got random reboots (still better than what I got on honeycomb. I still get glitches here and there on 77, but still have yet to get a.random reboot.
Unrelated to my topic, thank you so much for your guide to rooting and romming, i had read a couple others and hemmed and hawed about whether to do it, even though my mouth watered about the benefits, your guide made me clap my hands together and say "let's do this"

No problem...the EOS nightlies are on a newer kernel, but I think the lastest don't have oc gpus.
