Want to change your boot animation, but dont wanna mess with ADB?
Download the desired bootanimation.zip
Put on root of SD.
Rename chosen boot animation to bootanimation.zip
Open up Root Explorer, navigate to root of SD long press the bootanimation.zip file, and select move
Navigate to /system/customize/resource
Click Mount R/W
Click paste, and overwrite the existing file.
Reboot.
**NOTE: you may want to back up the existing boot animation first, in case you dont dig the new one**
I can only verify that this will work with the HTC EVO. Im not responsible if you accidentally mess up your phone.
The directories may not be the same for every rom...
How do I get this to work on the CMod7 RC2, I go to file manager system/media and I see the bootanimation.zip file but it wont let me delete or move it...Any ideas?
The built in file manager for cm7 does not mount the system partitions as R/W which is required. I actually have not found a single file manager that *CAN* mount cm7 system partitions as R/W.
I tried Root File Explorer, ES File Explorer and Root System Explorer. All 3 crash the phone when attempting to mount the system as R/W
I used Root Explorer running CM7 Rc2 on my EVO to change my boot animation and it we worked fine.

After that, open root exploxer, go to the sdcard, long press on bootanimation.zip, then up one folder to the phone memory, navigate to the system folder, then the media folder inside system, then paste/hit the menu and click move.
how can i get this to work on m Evo shift? plz HELP..

I'm using the Infused rom with infusion Kernel
Since I flashed the Rom i don't have any boot anim...
After a long samsung logo the launcher appear.
I already tried to reflash, do factory, but nothing help.
I also tried a boot anim changer app and even when it said its applied, there is still no boot anim....
Any ideas guys?

The only time Root Explorer crashes on me, it's because I don't have root permission. Assuming you are rooted, can try three things:
1) Go into the Superuser App and find root explorer if its there and choose to forget it.
2) If that doesn't work reboot.
3) If THAT doesn't work try a different file explorer.
I have root and root explorer display that it got root permission a second before.it.crashed.
I've used an.other program and i can.confirm there is.the bootanimation.zip in the folder....even tried to change it for an.other on (ice cream sandwish boot).
I rebooted about 5 time and still no boot animation....
Could the os have problem reading a zip file???

one it's powered on, it take about 15-20 seconds before i get to the OS....

Jeez that's a head scratcher...what about permissions? Mine are all checked but Others/Write. That's really weird a factory reflash didn't work..

Other possibilities:
Some versions of the bootanimation binary only support PNG bootanimations, not JPEGs like the ICS bootanimation.
Some insist on it being /system/media/sanim.zip

And he's talking about the r/w, r/o option in root explorer so you can edit permissions,move files etc. Also, you can download an Android Terminal Emulator in the market.

Maybe my phone is fast booting by itself because I did nothing to help it boot as fast as this. since I Flashed the ROM the boot is blazing fast.
I did Mounted as RW with an app called Remount. It do the Root remount and it seems to work (for mounting) BUT! Still no boot anim.
I began to think that it's not that bad as I don't really reboot 5 time a day to enjoy a psychedelic screen lolll.
but still....it's more the Why than the How in this case

^^ this means that Entropy's instructions are assuming that you remounted system as read/write so that you can edit replace the bootanimation.zip. In Root Explorer once you navigate to system/media then in the top left it will say "mounted as r/o" next to that is a button that says "mount r/w" click that and it should "remount" your system as read/write.
At this point you should be able to replace the old with the new bootanimation.zip.
Reboot, and you're done.
If it still hangs and shows NO animation then my guess is you are using an incompatible bootanimation (that does happen, and will just stay black then your phone will just start, with no animation) try a different one, like the one below I know for sure works on the Infuse

Edit: Sorry it took me a long time to write all that on my Infuse, while i'm watching a movie also. Now that I posted I see others have informed you of the r/w stuff, but 2nd half is most likely your case.
I have Bionix ROM and I'm trying to add sounds to my bionic boot animation. But there isn't a poweron folder and I tried putting it in the history folder but it still doesn't work. Is there any way to add sounds to the animation?
EDIT: Changed to Bionix ROM and it still hasn't worked. Also tried putting sound file in Notification file and no luck D:

I think it has to do with the kernel, faux kernels don't have boot sound. Dunno about morfic or stock kernels either since I only rock faux ds kernels when released.

What kernels do have boot sound?

I was able to get sound...tried lots n lots. There is a TON posted here on the subject...found my solution in the HTC forums. Don't have the link handy but search CM7 boot sound. There is a file called bootsnd.sh that will append the necessary files and create the bootsound app needed. To finally get this to work I reflashed a new nightly of CM7. This also removed Trinity kernel...so maybe that was mucking things up. Ill reflash Trinity and see.
But to recap ...yes boot sound on LG g2x with cm7 is a go.

I cleared cache and dalvic using CWM.
I flashed a fresh CM7 nightly using CWM.
I Followed terminal emulator instructions...I'm sure adb from command line will work also. I used root explorer to copy android_audio.mp3 (don't forget to set system folder as R/W with root explorer.
1) search for and Download the bootsnd.sh file. Save it to the root directory of your SD Card on your Device.
2. Take whatever sound you want and rename it to: android_audio.mp3 (needs to be mp3 format) and then place in your adb directory.
3. On your phone, open terminal emulator, and type in the following:
su [enter]
cd /sdcard [enter]
ls (to list all files, you should see bootsnd.sh)
sh bootsnd.sh [enter]
You won't see a confirmation, or message, it just runs, and returns you to a # sign.
From your computer, adb push the android_audio.mp3 to the /system/media folder, reboot, and you'll have a sound.
If you don't like or know how to use adb, using root explorer and placing the android_audio.mp3 in the system/media folder works just as well (Mount the /system as R/W First). Reboot, and enjoy your boot sound.
*NOTE*
If you flash / change roms, you'll have to re-run the process to enable the boot sound again. If you get tired of it / don't want it, you can use root explorer and delete the file.
Alternate method:
For those that don't like using the terminal emulator, you can do it via adb:
navigate to your adb folder via commanda prompt, then issue the following commands:
adb remount
adb shell
cd /sdcard
ls [will list files, you should see bootsnd.sh]
sh bootsnd.sh
Like in the emulator, you will be returned with a # sign. Then place the audio file in the folder I specified. Just decided like posting an alt method

What do you mean by setting the system folder as R/W? It means read/write right? (lol write right)
EDIT: Plus how do I set it to R/W ( Sry im a little of a noob when it comes to things like this, im better at game developing )

Using a utility like Root Explorer (A paid app but worth the 4$, there may be a free alternative), makes this a trivial task...simply click the "Make R/W" will make the system directory ...you guessed it "Read/Writable". Normally its "Read Only" (R/O).
Im not 100% sure about this (im sure ill be corrected) as Root Explorer has made me lazy, but using ADB and issuing the command ADB Remount, will make the file system R/W (per the ADB Wiki adb remount - remounts the /system partition on the device read-write)
So using ADB to push your files, make all your edits on your local machine, then put them in your ADB directory, and issue commands as follows:
ADB remount
ADB push build.prop /system
ADB push init.local.rc /system/etc
ADB push bootsound /system/bin
ADB push android_audio.mp3 /data/local
Grr after I tried it it still doesn't work!!!
EDIT:Im reflashing ROM in case.

CM10 Bootanimation
Just downloaded the latest nightly, has the new bootanimation that fits perfectly on our device, thought I'd share it for anyone that wants it but doesn't want to download the whole ROM or update for some reason or aren't even running CM10! (I have a Vibrant.)

Thanks so such much. Really appreciated. The stock cm9 bootlogo would cause my phone to take long like almost 4 mins to boot. Once I swapped to this new boot logo my phone boots in under 45 seconds

You'll need root and a way to mount the /system partition rw. I do everything through adb,
# mount -o remount,rw /system
# cp path/to/new/bootanimation.zip /system/media
# busybox chown root:root /system/media/bootanimation.zip
# busybox chmod 644 /system/media/bootanimation.zip
# reboot
There are "root explorer" tools that can probably do it as well.

I was able to copy and paste over to the media folder. But when reboot, I only get the word 'Android' on the boot screen. I don't see the animation like the video in YouTube. Is there something that I need to change. I am running REMICS.

Amigos. Use a root explorer like ES File Explorer by ES Strong. After doing so hit menu button, settings, scroll down to where it says root settings then tap on it, hit the first check box that says for rooted phones only. Then hit the box that says mount system, and also the other box that says make system write able or up to root directory. Once you have do so please hit the back button twice to go back to where you can see the files on your SD card. Once you can do see your SD card files please tap the back button once more and after doing so you shouldn't see all your phone's system files and once you can see them scroll down and open the folder called "system" not sys. I repeat the folder called "system"
Once inside the folder? Hard click on the folder called "Media" and hit copy. Then navigate back to your SD card and past it somewhere on your SD card as a back up just in case you ever want to revert back to the cm9 or whatever boot animation you are currently using. Now once you have backed up the folder called media. Please navigate back to your system folder/media and open it once again. After doing so delete the boot animation zip folder that is inside of it, no worried because that is why you made a back up of the folder on your SD card for then after you delete the one inside system please move this boot animation zip folder to system. By this boot animation zip I mean the cm10 boot loader to system. Capish? Then after doing so exit your file browser and restart your phone and watch as the amazing cm10 boot logo pops up

*Done. Phone booted like in 30 secs. The CM9 one made it boot very slow. Good thing is that this bootanimation doesn't have the # of CM version.
Cm9 took me 3 minuted to boot

When I d/l'ed the file, I just get the shiny word 'android' Not anything like the video shows. I'm running Ravers OMFGCM9 build. Removed and replaced the file in system/media with the new one. Any ideas why its not like the video??

Try fixing permissions. Either reboot to recovery or change them using a root explorer. Long press on the file, go to properties, permissions should be rw-r-r
Make sure your ROM and/or Kernel support custom boot animations.
IDK why it wouldn't. Its CM9. It supports theme chooser. I've had another bootanimation on there since i've got the ROM. So IDK. I've looked in a few different places and downloaded quite a few of the same animation to the same effect. Checked the permissions and they were set right in the program. I'm fixing permissions in TWRP now. I'll repost after it finishes.
Still nothing after the permission fix. Hmmm.
I manually copy them in TWRP. Some installers don't work right. I think they don't mount system, just try and copy it to and without it being mounted properly, it won't work.
If you have an installer for a boot animation, open the zip and get the bootanimation.zip file and put it on your SD card. Otherwise, just the boot animation there.
Now you use TWRP recover option, or ES file explorer.
With ES File Explorer, you have to goto setting, make sure root options are on and mount system is enabled to allow writing to the system folder.
With TWRP, go to mount and make sure "unmount system" is checked. This means its mounted.
In TWRP, go to advanced, file manager, in ES file explorer, you're already in a file manager.
If you want to backup your current bootanimation, navigate to system->media folder. Press and hold on the bootanimation.zip to copy it. Navigate to a temp folder on your card and paste it.
Now go to your bootanimation.zip you want to use, press and hold on the file to copy it, navigate back to system->media and paste it. Reboot and you should be good. The main idea is to use some sort of method that will let you write to the system folder and copy the bootanimation.zip to the system->media folder.

Yep -- I've run into installers that don't check the mounts first. Including one I used to use for Hefe Kernel, I have to admit. It is especially troublesome if you "stack" installs and the previous one "helpfully" unmounts /system.

Ya, I've learned to check things more, do things manually and become a lot more comfortable with doing stuff like that with my phone and it helps figuring stuff out and getting stuff to work how I want it.
okay, I successfully swapped my internal and external sdcards on my axiom. I used the internal-external swap app found in the play store. It was working alright until I tried changing my boot animation. when I booted into cwm I discovered I could not mount my sdcard anymore effectivly halting my attempts to change my boot animation. I assume it has to do with this swap app. my questions are. is the app what is causing my inability to mount my sdcard from recovery and if I remove the app will the xposed module, which allows the same thing, only better, qork for me or has nobody run into this problem?

It seems that your recovery doesn't support the swapping.
Why don't you change the boot animation manually with a root explorer?
Try this
Manually change the boot animation without going into recovery
Firstly open the cwm zip using es file explorer and navigate to /system/media. there you will find bootanimation.zip copy it and navigate to device/system/media and paste it there. Provide the root permissions
Then select that bootanimaion.zip and open properties click on permissions - change and change it to rw- r-- r-- (Very important)
Reboot and done.
so, I removed the sdcard swapping app and just enabled the xposed module claiming to re-enable write/read to extsdcard. when I tried to flash bootanimation4u.zip with cwm I am still getting the unable to mount /sdcard error. in fact I cannot mount any directories in cwm. I got rom toolbox, amazing app btw, and tried to flash a zip from within the app and received a notice about cwm developers not allowing any apps bit thier own to function in conjunction with cwm recovery. the app suggested I flash twrp recovery. I'm thinking flashing a new recovery will eliminate the inability to mount sdcard and allow me to use rom toolbox more effectivly, am I on the right logic path here, or have I fully derailed?

Easiest way is probably to install a custom rom with native sdswap support + changeable bootanimation instead of using any third party apps...
yeah, that was my first choice but I have had zero luck finding a custom rom for my axiom. if anybody has come across one I would greatly appreciate the info!
