Hello guys, I'm new to the site and I just have 1 question (that I have googled for about 3 hours without success).
I just got my G2X and rooted it via superoneclick as soon as I got it. I am having problems with the wifi tethering and have read that tmobile has filtered tethering on plans without the plan but I refuse to believe that they would be able to filter 3rd party tethering apps. I have tried about 4 different third party apps and the stock program. They always send out a signal but cannot connect to anything (tried on 2 different laptops). Can someone shed some light on what's going on? any help is greatly appreciated.
I noticed to get the built in tether program working for my netbook I had to do an "ipconfig /release" then an "ipconfig /renew" from the command line after wifi had connected.
The wifi tethering program from the google code site worked out of the box but protection wouldn't work, and I had no desire to share my phone to the whole hotel
What do you mean protection doesn't work? Thr set password works fine for me

Today is not working. I made 2 reset. I have always error in portable wifi hotspot

I'm still not able to connect the blackberry

It would show two networks, one protected, one not, the protected one didn't work and anyone could connect to the unprotected one
I pay for tethering on one of my phones (mine) and am trying it now for the 1st time....very fast. Wouldn't connect at first then I let windows do a troubleshoot and it corrected the issue. Seems to work well. I've been having a lot of power failures this year so want to ensure my wife can have internet for her work.
But I think I've read that the providers can't prevent tethering apps from working. Haven't I heard they are preventing the tethering apps from being seen through their Market apps?
They may detect the extra usage though.

I am looking for something similar to what Hitchhicker is supposed to do, but without the Hitchhiker's problems on WM6. For me, it was completely unreliable, left tons of connection settings behind in the registry etc etc.
All i want is an ability to find a public/open WiFi network with internet access and connect to it in a single tap.
Any ideas ?
I use WeFi- Free and works like charm. Also can start programms after it connected.
I start Palringo (Free multi Messanger)
I read about WeFi here, the reason i never tried it was this:

Same thing as with the previous version.
It scrambled my wifi settings I had to make a hard reset (Asus P535, WM6).

Can you tell me what particular version seems to work on Polaris ?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: i am currently backing up to try the latest version myself, will report here later today
First report about WeFi:
It seems to erase all your normal (WZC) WiFi settings without asking, including the WEP/WPA keys. And KEEP ERASING those every start.
It would not connect to my own home WiFi (secured, WPA2+PSK, AES) despite having correct the key entered in it's dialog.
After manually connecting using the normal utility, while WeFi still running in the background, it "tested" the hostspot, and found it to have internet connectivity. After that, it reported 1 user being connected on that hot spot (me) ! What this means is, it certainly tells some of the hotspot details (SSID) to it's server. The question is, would it also share the key with every other user on the planet ? If it would, this would be completely unacceptable !!!
One positive thing about it, somehow, it managed to reconfigure the WZC on Polaris to connect to any open hotspot available (good for me), even when the program isn't running (no, i didn't forget to shut it's today plugin down). This is probably some registry setting unknown to us. I'll try fishing it out and report.
EDIT: sorry, my mistake, it didn't really reconfigure WZC, it got some processes installed, running at the background, that i missed :-(
Just in case someone may want to know this, the part of WeFi that seems to do the "auto-connect to any open network" thing, but not the internet connectivity probing, is the WeFiSrv.exe, that seems to require Comm.DLL, Engine.dll, Hessian.dll, OpenNETCF.dll, Prot.DLL, Util.dll and Win.dll to run
as well.
EDIT: WeFiSrv.exe seems to be responsible for deleting the existing "normal" WiFi settings too. As well as responsible for eating a big chunk of RAM while running.
EDIT2: same app also responsible for screwing up the settings
Conclusion: unless you are going to connect to unprotected WiFi hotspots ONLY, this program, or any parts of it, isn't really an option.
Any other suggestions ?
So I have my stock AT&T Samsung.
I did side load a couple apps including the one in the guide to give me root.
The guide says to download the tethering thing from:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Guide says to use: wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre8.apk
However that seems to be no longer on the site.
I tried file: wireless_tether_2_0_6.apk
When I click on the Wifi button it freezes.
Side note: In the manage app list (to uninstall it) its inbetween "Amazon" and "Angry Birds" alphabetically??
Then I tried file: wifi_tether_v3_0-pre4.apk
It didn't freeze.
It did have some starting errors though
Same errors if I leave it on Auto or if I pick Samsung Galaxy S.
Loading WiFi driver... done
Stopping driver... done
Loading WiFi firmware... failed
starting driver... done
Configuring softap... failed
Starting softap... failed
Activating WiFi interface... failed
Enabling NAT rules... done
Enabling IP forwarding... done
Tethering now running... done
I checked with my other computers and its not publishing the SSID.
What am I doing wrong?
Seems like they changed alot of things up on the page
Here are my copies of pre8 and the last one I dl'd, pre14.
Try those out.
Edit: Also in the morning, pick up a cup of coffee at starbucks. Sit down at a table and whip out your phone. Turn on airplane mode. Turn on wifi. Wait for data. Go to market. Search android wifi tether. Install it. Going to the market this way enables you to see apps that were being blocked by AT&T. And you will get the latest released version.
Get this one

I grabbed file: wireless_tether_2_0_5.apk from their site and it worked.
It did freeze when I tried to rename the SSID when it was already tethering (froze during restart) - however it seems to work.
Now I have to figure out why my chrome os cr-48 laptop has problems connecting to it...
My bus rides are going to be much more useful compared to 100mb /month.
dug around and found this
http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...etail?name=wifi_tether_v3_0-pre4.apk&can=2&q=
latest version, they seem to be on 3.0 now, released 9 hours ago
I would take that if I were you

Is it necessary to go to starbucks for the at&t hotspot to do this or can it be done on any wifi network?

Any wifi, Dunn Brother's has better coffee if you ask me. And it doesn't have to be an AT&T wifi. It can be your home wifi, drinking Folger's.
I think I just said Starbuck's cause the city I just moved to is a yuppie town and they only have Starbuck's and they are on every corner and in every grocery store. You go there and all of em are full of a bunch of pretentious bastards with glowing apples every where.
On that note, if anyone happens to from the Frisco, Tx area and knows of a good coffee house or bookstore that sells coffee and lets you read the paper. Please let me know.
I flashed Danalo's All In One Odin full bloat. The browser doesn't work on wifi. All other net connections work but not the browser !! It works on 3g/4g but not on my home wifi network. The network is good, the wife's moto droid works fine on it.
I would prefer the debloated/deodexed but the messaging keyboard hasn't got the microphone for voice texting.
Same with Imnuts' Infinity ROM. I REALLY like that ROM but need the voice texting as I am a truck driver and it is handy as hell going down the road !!
Is there a way to activate that feature? Or to fix the browser on the other ROM?
Is wifi setup with everything? Do you see the ssid, enter the password, manage networks and in advanced it has stuff about ip address etc. If so it could be searching for your network and seeing it but not staying connected. So if Im wrong about all that you wifi is connected ,you see it and stays connected but doesnt work? Sorry out of ideas.
The wifi IS connected. It works for other appz such as synching accounts, twitter, facebook etc. All of those things have net access through the wifi connection. I verified this by shutting off the data (3g) connection to ensure these other appz weren't accessing the net via data connection running in the background.
Opening the browser and all you get is page not found error. Turn on data connection (3g) and it works fine.
Not meaning to be wordy but ....
Oddly enough, the browser works fine in his debloated/deodexed version. It is only in the full version all in one I encounter this. It has happened with multiple flashes as well to ensure it wasn't just a bad flash.
Under the advanced setting in wifi is there anything in the proxy setting? If so there should not be just blank it out. This has been the problem in the past.

When i tether on wifi hot spot or usb tether to my laptop (my friends connect their iPods and phones to them all the time and i never get compaints) it redirects what ever page i want to go on to a T-Mobile page trying to get me to pay for tethering. I can easily get around it with a proxy but sometimes i can't use it. Is there anyway around this?
I wonder if this means T-mobile is finally controlling tethering by packet filtering along with IMEI tracking?
Change user agent string in your browser to android. Both firefox and chrome have extensions for that.

They shut me down last week as well, and I was tethering using CM7's built-in hotspot feature. Using a VPN or changing your browser ID will get around it.
I don't get it.. I was able to tether even before I rooted. Not long ago my wife and I went on a vacation, and the rooms didn't have Wi-Fi like we thought. Tethering to my phone really saved us. Did they block it or something?? I haven't tried it since then.

Yes, they seem to have started enforcing their requirement to have a tethering plan sometime in the last week or two.
I have noticed since posting that it is intermittently working....sometimes I can tether and other times I cannot but I never get the t mobile tether screen on my computer I just get an error message on the phone so Idk if I have been caught or not lol

Okay guys, at least for now I've been able to get unlimited tethering via USB. This does require a paid version of FoxFi for PDA net. I'm unsure to whether or not the wireless tether works through FoxFi, currently sitting at 6.5/7 GB for the month so I haven't been able to test otherwise yet.
As usual with T-Mobile, you need to create a new APN and use IPv4. Then on FoxFi use USB tethering. On the PC client, be sure that you use the Level 1 Hide Tether Usage option in settings.
Build.prop was set for:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
It's extremely worth noting that I've done this on my ROOTED phone, with all T-Mobile apps removed except Mobile Hotspot, Device Unlock and visual voicemail.
My Account, money, TV, Lookout Security and com.t-mobile.pr.adapt and basically any other T-Mobile app is gone.
Please see screenshots for any other settings. Furthermore I'm not responsible if you mess anything up or if it doesn't work for you. Just sharing what I was successful with so far.
If I'm able to determine and wireless option I will post here as well, but must wait until my billing cycle reset. I've got an idea, but as this phone is brand new to me and just had a new baby on the 9th, it's been difficult to find the time to say the least.
Good Luck!

Sorry, 21st. As long as I do USB only I have no issues. Last night, I used WiFi Tether router to stream a few things through my roku 4, it hasn't seemed to increase my hotspot data, so that may be an option.
