Captivate wont connect to computer - Captivate General

Just recently my computer stopped recognizing my phone. i plug it in and it says usb device not recognized. i deleted then reinstalled the drivers and that didnt work. shut off the phone pulled the battery and then my computer said downloading drivers or w.e. but then said download failed. tried rebooting and pullin batts on both but still nothing new. Any help?

had the same problem, solution? Get a new/smaller usb cable!
Lol using my old backflip recognizes my captivate and works like a charm, after a while the long usb cable degrades.

Try using a different USB port.

Same problem on my laptop
No problem on my desktop
Just use a 2nd computer
Or reinstall windows
Swyped from gingerbread powered captivate

Had the same problem on my laptop.
Happened after Win 7 SP1.
Strangely it only affects 3 USB ports on the right side. Not the single one on the left. :/

my laptop only has 3 usb ports
so all of them were affected.......bug?
my desktops USB's are fine though

I tried the two on the right and the one on the left but still not working. i still get the option on my phone to mount it and such but nothing happens as usual. Ill try a different cable later today. My roommate has a captivate so when i go home ill try his cable and if that doesnt work then his computer and we shall see. thanks for the responses

I had the same problem. I tried multiple computers, cords, drivers. Nothing worked. Eventually I got a replacement cause it was still under warranty.

Captivate Cant Connect with USB

I've looked everywhere and cant seem to find an answer, so i figured i'd start a new thread.
My captivate used to connect to my computer just fine, but there was another computer it would just NOT connect too! Well, after a few months, it stopped connecting to my home computer as well.
I have USB debugging on, the phone is rooted and everything. When I plug it in and mount the USB drives, i get drives J and K on my computer, one for the internal storage, and one for the SD card i have in the phone.
When double clicking any of those drives, it just sits there and reads forever without ever doing anything. I can use the SDK to run "adb devices" and it see's the phone, Odin One Click finds the phone but freezes on reading file line, or just fails all together.
Any ideas?
Try reinstalling the samsung usb drivers and restart your computer, that'd be my first step.

You have to be on the touch wiz home screen if you're trying to connect to Kies, otherwise turn on USB debugging and you should be good to go

SeenNotScene: I've uninstalled, rebooted, re-installed several times. I've been having this problem for a couple months now and i've tried everything i can think of. It doesnt work
bkhams: I dont even know what Kies is? I always have USB debugging turned on, and once connected i bring down the drop down menu and mount the USB so i can access my phones files as if they were another drive.
I had the same problem, and Samsung peeps told me I had to use the USB cable that came with the phone, low and behold they were right. Connected right away with the USB that came with the phone, could that be your problem?
I had the same problem in the past and it was actually a hardware problem with the Captivate and not anything with the computer. I ended up taking the phone in and they exchanged it for me.
I do not know if yours could be having the same problem, but that was my experience. Frustrating, to say the least.
Hmm... Could be the hardware i guess.. I know its not the cable though because i've only ever used the cable that came with it.
Have you tried connecting to the USB port directly off the motherboard? My connections were "sketchy" at best when using the ports of the top of the computer case. Once I connected directly off the MOBO, zero problems since.
Sloved!

Thank you for suggestions! My front USB connector is probably connected to some internal HUB, not going straight to the motherboard and wont work. Connecting directly to MB USB solve the problem. I am a little bit surprised... but whatever - M$ bull*hits. I spend couple of hours yesterday to find out whats going on. Thank you again!

[Q] PC not recognizing phone

This issue popped up for me about a week ago. Am running EP1W with Gummy 2.0, but also had it with Infinity ROM Beta.
My PC isn't recognizing the phone when plugged in via USB. The phone does go into download mode, but I get an error in Windows (version is XP) saying the USB device has malfunctioned. This happens on all ports and I've flashed with this computer before. I tried re-installing Odin 1.82 and the Samsung drivers but had no luck. I suspect this is a hardware issue as the phone doesn't recognize the charger when plugged into the outlet. It does charge, however (see attachment).
Has anyone had this issue? Is this fixable or am I basically screwed when it comes to using Odin to flash?
Try rebooting your computer and restoring it to a different time when it did work.

I've only heard of completely dead Charge USB ports where it won't charge or plug into anything so it doesn't sound like you're hopeless... I'd try using a different cable and different ports on your pc, though it sounds like its phone related if it does connect and charge/go into download mode but doesn't register that its plugged in
I tried my buddy's charger for his Galaxy S to no success (wall charging, phone didn't recognize being plugged in). Unless the Charge has a specific micro USB, I might be screwed here.
mine's doing the same also. it started off as excessive battery drain - went from -10 to -40 to now draining at -100 to -250 on standby.
earlier this week i started getting the same problems you have. after a few tries of reconnecting i was able to get it back to stock to see if the problem persists and it does. so hopefully i'll be able to make it to verizon this weekend to see if they can fix it. so far it seems it's a hardware malfunction as it works intermittently.

Phone not being seen by any PC

So this issue started a few days ago. Any time I plugged my phone in it would constantly connect and disconnect from the pc. I've tried multiple usb cables, ports, and the 3 PCs I have with the same result on each. Now when I plug it in, it is no longer being recognized by the PC, Odin, ADB, etc... It will charge but that is it.
I have a warranty replacement coming to me however I need to be able to get this one back to stock... Any suggestions?
Before anyone asks, NO it has never been wet, dropped, damaged in any way, set on fire, caught in a land slide, earthquake, what have you.. The phone itself functions perfectly fine. All drivers are up to date, none of my PCs configurations have changed. I have one I use specifically for app development and not even that one will see the phone.
I had the same problem. I used a different cable and it all worked better....now with that said it happened again so I flashed my phone back to stock and all was well.
Then went to flashing ROMS.

Really check out the micro usb cable. A bad cable will just about always allow a device to charge, but data transfer is another story. If you really have tried a few micro USB cables, then it the problem relies elsewhere. Try restarting both phone and PC, and if neither works, sounds like you have a busted port on the Skyrocket.
Thank you both for your responses. I am a PC technician so I followed my usual troubleshooting steps to figure this out. I narrowed it down to either all of my cables are bad (not a chance) or the phone is just f**ked (likely). Ah well ill have to try to use another way to force the stock firmware and recovery on here. Lol
HTC = Hate The Consumer
I use my old Nokia OEM USB cable. Connects with the right number of pins on the USB connection end. I'd check your USB cables for # of pins . Skyrocket uses 5 I believe. Also that there is sufficient power to your USB ports. Aka avoid front USB ports which could only be 4 pin....

When you plug the usb cable in, do you see the usb icon at the top left of your screen? I have to pull that window down to tell it to connect to pc, then confirm it again before mine connects. Mine doesn't auto connect on its own.
I see you've been a member for a few years so if its not connecting, that really sucks man. Hope you get it figured out.

Not running the AOKP ROM are you? The R3 build had an issue with this, and all AOKP will disable USB to PC if you enable 'fast charge' under ROM Control...
Good luck :S
According to what I've been reading you can try using the *#7284# code and setting the USB portion from PDA to MODEM and then back to PDA and it would kickstart the connection. No dice for me though. Ive been through 7 different USB cables already.. I am not about to go and buy one just to keep playing with it my other phones connect just fine using the same cables. No, I am running the latest Sky ICS

No download mode :(

So I flashed my infuse from Froyo to GB to ICS and then to JB...but ironically the same day that i flashed to JB, my download mode stopped working.
Ever since I flashed to JB (CM10 and slimbean so far) My computer says "USB device is not recognized or has malfunctioned" and I cannot put the phone into download mode via 2 buttons and usb cable. When I plug the phone in it just turns on and starts charging and the computer wants nothing to do with it.
I know the USB port works because it charges without a problem. I have also tried 2 other windows 7 PCs, and my macbook. Can't get it into DL mode or to mass storage.
Any ideas?

Just cause it charges doesn't mean it works...that just means the power part works...power and data transfer are two desperate things...I've had cords in the past that after a while stopped working as data cables and became strictly charge only cables...
So, have you tried a different data cord? Its likely the data transfer cables got damaged due to normal wear and tear (these cords arent made to last...)

Yeah my friend just used it with his note so i know the cord works :\

Try a different cable, just do it. Denial is not good. I had same problem then got a different , different cable and it worked. As i tried three cables. I do believe one did work to get mass storage but it didn't work to flash my xperia x10, that's what bugged me.don't really remember as i have bricked these phones so may times experimentation ya know, it is hard for me to remember .
as i was flashing my infuse at the same time i used the data cable that does work with the infuse and my other cable wasn't working it wouldn't recognize and ahhh went through my head so after infuse got done i switched cables and vola it worked.
If not then reinstall drivers reboot pc and get a data cable that is really a data cable .

Phone Won't Recognize Computer

Or my computer won't recognize my phone... not sure which.
Anyway, when I plug the phone into my computer it still charges, but I don't get the option to use it as a mass storage device, so I can't transfer files between phone and computer.
I got a new usb cord about two months ago and it worked up until now, so I don't think it's the cord.
I've tried taking out the SIM card and battery, restarting phone/computer, installing KIES, toggling USB debugging... not sure what else to try.
Anyone else ever have this problem?
Go into device manager on the pc with the phone plug in. There will be a usb port with an exclamation mark on it. Manually update the driver to android adb interface.

Ok I just tried that... I don't see any exclamation marks anywhere.
I tried reinstalling the drivers from Samsung's website and that didn't work either.

Your pc isn't recognizing that your device is connected at all. It's not a driver issue. It's either the usb cord or the usb port on your phone that's not working

Hmm alright... I'll buy another cord and see if that works... thanks.
@jd1639 nailed it, imo. You've either got a bad cord or a bad port. I'd try a different USB port first, and if that doesn't solve it, you know you've got a bad cord.
This seems to be a funny issue cause now all of a sudden it's working... not sure what happened. It could have been installing the driver and then restarting my computer, or playing around with USB debugging again.
I've read other places of guys trying different cords, etc and nothing working, and then they just take their battery out and back in and then it's working again. So ya no idea.
