So, I am really glad that you can now set the proxy for individual connections so that I don't have to keep switching on the proxy at university and switching it back off when I get home.
But my main issue is that the proxy only seems to work for the browser.
When the browser connects to our proxy, it asks for my student number and password, and then it allows my through the proxy and I can browse the net.
But with 3.0.1, gmail and the other apps still couldn't get through the proxy, as authentication seems to be only for the browser.
I assume it will be the same with 3.1, but will have to double check on Monday when I go in again, as I only got the update today.
The android developers site that has the list of fixes for 3.1 says this:
"This proxy configuration is automatically used by the Browser when the Wi-Fi access point is connected, and may optionally be used by other apps."
So my questions is, how do we access the "optionally be used by other apps" part?
I don't want to root to use 3rd part software.
Thanks
So. Ya, that apps still can't access the internet.
Except for google maps, that seems to work, although I'm not sure if it has just cached maps or not.
Anyway, there should be a way for the apps to use the same authentication as the browser. The proxy is supposed to be global on the device, so how do you make the authentication global too?
Anyone have any ideas? Or know who I can contact to get an answer/fix?
This is very frustrating. What's the point of having a proxy if the apps don't work, especially in android; an app centered OS.
Thanks

Yes I searched extensively, and didn't find an answer, okay, now that that's out of the way...
I am running V.4 of Laurentius26's ROM, and downloaded the Restore and Disable Proxy Cabs. Well, if i run the Restore Proxy no pages will load in IE or Opera Mini, everything works fine again though when I run the disable proxy cab. Is there a reason why this is happening? I am wondering if there is some issue with the AT&T cabs and the HTC ROM's. I don't normally need to Proxy, but I would like to turn it on once in a while to access the MEdia Net home page and Cellular Video, thanks for the help guys!
76 views and no ideas at all?
I think all these cabs do is change some registry settings, have you tried to make these changes manually and see if that works?
Yeah, I have gone into the registry and done it manually, but it still does the same thing. I think it must have something to do with the way HTC's ROM's work that doesn't work well with AT&T's Proxy.
Edit-You can set the MEdia net connection to use the Proxy all of the time, but certain things don't work with it, like Telenav and TomTom (the program works fine, but trying to update or use the Plus services, like Traffic Updates, fails with the proxy). That's why I am hoping I can find a way to use the enable/disable proxy cabs again.
I think i might know what your problem is, the restore and disable proxy cabs will only work if the proxy is hardcoded into the registry. It is like that on the official AT&T roms. If you just let connection setup run or install a few of the cabs floating around here for AT&T settings the proxy will be listed in the connections, like if you go look at the media net connection and you should see a tab with proxy settings and they will be configured. The AT&T ROMS don't do that anymore, they place them in the registry and the enable and disable proxy cabs will turn it on and off. The reason for that is to make it easier to surf on your phone with a wifi connection. If you want the connections set up in such a way that you can use the enable and disable proxy cabs then you will need a cab with those settings, i used to have one but i can't seem to find it. You could search the forum and i am sure you could turn something up. RF9 has an excellent post that goes more into detail on this matter. http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=8555248
Depending on what you want to do though you could just change the My ISP conection to be wap.cingular and leave the MEdia Net one as is and use the My ISP anytime you want to connect without a proxy. Happy Modding
Do it manually. Just open the cab on the PC and view the file. Oddly I think the one I tried first a few weeks ago was backward in naming convention. The remove seemed to enable and viceversa.
I have recently purchased an LG Vortex that comes with the Android 2.2 operating system installed. I have looked into rooting my phone with z4root and have successfully temporarily rooted my phone. I would rather keep my phone unrooted, but if it is absolutely necessary I will root it permanently with z4root.
My question is this: How can I connect to my company wifi and use apps that require wifi?
I can successfully connect to my corporate wifi through the 802.1x EAP protocol. The problem comes when trying to access any of the apps that require internet (I am forcing Verizon's data plan not to be used--using wifi only due to 150MB limit on my data to save $$ per month). None of my apps seem to work--internet browser, Market, Gmail, Google Calendar, etc...
On my company pc I know that within internet explorer the box is checked that says "Use automatic configuration script" and gives an "Address" that is in the format of "..../proxy.pac" It looks like my work uses a proxy for things to connect to the internet. I have no such place to put this information in my LG Vortex. I downloaded an app that seemed promising called "Proxy Settings" which will allow me to enter in the following Hostname and Port. When I tried to enter the "..../proxy.pac" as the hostname it gave me an error stating "The hostname you typed is not valid."
Is there an app or something that will allow me to use my apps when connecting to my corporate wifi? Is it a proxy setting thing or a VPN thing? I am not sure. I am open to any and every idea so that I can use my phone's online features while connected to my company's wifi.
FYI - I have friends that have iPod touches and they are able to connect to the internet with some apps internet browsing and downloading apps, but they have a similar issue of not being able to use all of their apps as well. I believe they were able to put the "..../proxy.pac" address in their devices somewhere.
Thanks!
Any ideas? HELP!!!
Your compay could have blocked its use on WIFI?
i think the Corp have blocked the connection. Basically blacklist everything but certain site. Try to access facebook through the browser, if it goes through then i dont know. Of not then the Corp have things blocked.
Is it safe to use Orbot while getting the "error starting transparent proxy"? It says that I am connected to Tor, but when bootstrapping I get an error that says "error starting transparent proxy". Am I revealing anything about myself when I'm browsing if I continue to use Tor (connected & green) in this manner?

It is possible that you may be fine in using the orweb browser since it is made for scenario that the transparent proxy cannot be set due to lack of root, but any other app will most likely not be going through tor. An simple (though not all encompassing) way to check this is to browse to google and type "ip address" with orbot running and with it not running and see if it shows a different address (it should be different when working properly).

Perfect. Yea, I used Orweb to connect to Tor. I just wanted to make sure that I didn't leave anything out there. I did the IP check, and all was fine in that regard. As for use of apps, this is only if I open one up and use while on Tor, right? (As opposed to an app running in the background.)
I also recall reading something that indicated that Tor on Android was less secure than Tor on a PC, so that was a concern as well.
when I connect to a captive wifi, I want to use the connection as is (maybe I want to login without telling google - since the builtin authenticator uses their gstatic domain, or maybe I want to probe the network as it is being redirected, or maybe I just want firefox to manage my password to the portal, etc)
but after I select "use wifi as is" on the android webview builtin auth screen, android starts to route all and every traffic to my 3g/4g data connection instead, until I disable and re-enable wifi.
it will only ever redirect traffic to wifi after it successfully got the correct 204 from gstatic.com
is there anyway to work around this?
I am on android6, but I think I has always been like that.

Do you have any kind of Linux ide? Have you tried making a tunnel?
Or is that what your looking for. I'm not 100% sure what your looking for. If your trying to skip Hotspot authentication? Or anything like that Then a tunnel would work fine.
Sorry I can't be of much else help
If your phone is rooted or has a custom ROM (Which would obviously indicate that the phone is rooted), there is a solution that you can try using a terminal (Or ADB shell).
Issue the command: "settings put global captive_portal_detection_enabled 0" That should prevent captive portal detection and gstatic confirmation. This should work, I haven't tried it personally though.
Additionally, you can setup a captive server.
Issue the command: "settings put global captive_portal_server g.cn"
Restart your phone, and you should have access to the pages.
Basically, connecting as is, requires you to reach a site that does not require 204 confirmation and afterward other sites should be accessible. Let me know if this helps.

no root on the phone (damn blackberry priv) and no control of the portal.
this is so infuriating. This is trivial, banal even, on any device i control. Feel like a kid on training wheels every time i touch my phone.
Due to Fire OS I suppose, the Fire tablets do not automatically reconnect to networks that it doesn't detect internet on. You must manually go into WiFi settings and connect to it every time. I use my Fire HD8s for a specialized purpose on networks that purposely don't have internet, so this "feature" is somewhat of an annoyance to me.
Does anyone have a way (hacky or otherwise) that'll force the tablet to connect to the network? OR, is there some sort of shortcut app I can place on my homescreen that'll connect it to the network with one touch?
It usually uses one, specific domain to test internet access. If you can figure out what that is, you can make that domain available on your closed network. You'd need a DNS entry for it, plus host a small website that'll give it the reply it's looking for. That would make it think the internet is available.
That's a pretty hacky way, but it should work.

It should yes. Amazon doesn't offer this option in the settings apk. Unfortunately the only way to truly activate the feature is to use my FireTabletSettings apk, which requires root access.
