(Q) anyone attempted to hook up their xoom to a camera? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm still waiting for the 3.1 update sadly. And I'm curious if anyone attempted to hook up their xoom to any dslr or camera of any sort. This would certainly bring my dslr to a new level.

Yes I have. I've not a dslr but a digital camera capable of using the host function. What do you need to know?

Just basically how it handles the transfer. Do I need a file manager program like astro file manager? Can I specify the directory from and where the images go.

i pretty much got told i was an idiot in this post, and had my thread hijacked. screw those retards, im doing way more with my XOOM then they will dream of.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1073396
i hooked mine up, works great. you dont need astro. it asks to import in gallery. If you want to move your photos around to edit on photoshop mobile, youll need it since galley puts the imports into a "imported" folder in the /sdcard root. photoshop mobile does not look there, it goes to DCIM.

apologies i missed this post but good answer from above there.
and photshop mobile.. is it any good? (partial thread hijack.. )

Also, be aware, it doesn't prompt for overwrites. I was testing it at work doing product photography. I imported the first batch of photos, picked the keepers and started the next batch, another person had disabled the sequential numbering on the camera so deleting the first batch from the SD card reset the counter. Upon importing the second batch, I lost all of my first batch.
Beyond that, it works quite well.

My rooted xoom on 3.1 does not even 'see' my canon 60D (and vice versa) when connected with my OTG cable
I know my OTG cable is fine because it works with all my flash drives, external HDDs, and card reader
Normally when I plug in the 60D to the computer, the camera turns itself into USB mode (cannot shoot photos), but when plugged to my xoom, it appears as if nothing is plugged in (still shoots photos properly)

Works great with pro SLR's!!!
Love it! I plugged my Nikon D3S, D3X and D700 pro SLR cameras into it and my pictures showed up in the gallery!!! This is a HUGE benefit since now I can leave my tablet PC at home and use the Xoom to quick email some proofs.
Now if only the Micro SD slot would work without rooting!

how about connecting usb hd webcam? (if powered from external source...)
is it possible to record videos from such camera?

Using Tiamat and Sony DSLR's hook up no problem as long as you use the special cable. I read that 3.1 will allow usb host too but I do not know how much more or less will be supported with stock vs the Tiamat kernel. Will you still need the special usb cable with 3.1 so that usbhost will work, or will any usb cable work? I know I tried with the Tiamat one and it did not work, which is why I ordered the special cable.

I've a Canon T2i and I can only import pictures as long they are jpgs. Does anybody imported RAW pictures (.CR2) into the xoom? I can't find the directory where my camera is mounted so I can move my pictures manually, it would be awesome if I can see my raw images but at least I want to use my xoom as a storage.
Thanks

Your camera most likely is in a USB Host mode and not PTP mode. I had the same problem with my camera. Its a simple fix just go to your camera USB options and set it to PTP. Also my camera needed power, it didn't when plugged into my MAC.
I have a video that shows this basically works. This highlights all the 3.1 features so I apologize for it not having just a video on that. But to see the OTG Camera Picture Import go to 6:20 in the video.

Hey, I also have a Canon but a 7D, can you try something for me?, hook up the camera, on the gallery go as if you were to import the pics and deselect all, then double click one to view the pic in full screen, now click once on the screen to pull up the scroll at the bottom that shows all the pics, scroll all the way to the last pic (I have about 300 on it) and see if your camera shows an error message 70 Shooting is not possible, bla bla... let me know how it goes.
Thanks

What kind of cable or adapter do I need to do this. Everything I have is used for plugging into my PC and obviously the end of the USB is way to big for this.

Ideas for best video conferencing app?

I'm still waiting for my OTG cable.

Having a similar issues with a rooted xoom running 3.1 and tiamat 1.4.2. as soon as i plug my t2i in it freezes the camera till it is unplugged. while plugged in nothing shows up in gallery to import. tried plugging in a samsung point and shoot also and no go. Trying to look into it further.
update:got bored and went back to 3.0.1 & relocked and got the ota update and my t2i works fine. now to reflash tiamat and see if it still works or if it is indeed the source of the problem.

do you happen to know how to use adb logcat? looking to see what your xoom is doing to access your t2i that mine isn't.edit: never mind i got it. and for your question: raw pictures are stored in a slightly different format for each camera and you would need a program that was compatible with the t2i's format in order to view them. The gallery simply doesn't have that functionality so you won't be able to import them. also, the t2i isn't mounted as a drive when plugged in so you won't be able to access the files directly.

thanks for the reminder, but unfortunately, i've checked many places, but the Canon 60D has no option to turn on PTP... guess i shall need to wait for a firmware update or something

how to mount a usb thumb drive in 3.1 stock?

wifi xoom running 3.1 (non-rooted)
I bought the Motorola Camera Connection Kit (OTG Cable), connected my digital camera and it worked perfect. However, I'm trying to see if i can plug in a usb thumb drive... but I can't get it to work? Do I need to do anything special to mount it? What filesystem would it mount as?
Thanks in advance
I may be wrong on this but I didn't think 3.1 stock had flash drive access...?
maybe I'm confused too then? I thought 3.1 added usb host support...
only for cameras, video game controllers, mouse and keyboard.
ahh, that explains it... thanks!
Is it using the camera protocol? My cameras have always shown up as mass storage on my computers. I haven't tried a camera on my xoom yet.
i just tried with my camera. it still won't work. guess we have to mount the drive.

got my Camera to work with Xoom. Just set the camera USB setting to MTP/PTP mode.
It cannot recognize raw image files.
works with my canon 5d m2 instantly without any setting changes
Anyone have a flip camcorder who could test that out?
Edit: I went and bought the camera connection kit. Was able to get videos off my flip by navigating to /mnt/usbOTG (with the flip attached obviously). I'm rooted and using the latest Tiamat kernel though. US WiFi model.

Media transfer protocol, otg cable, tiamat 1.4.4 and honeycomb

Hi all
I would like to connect my canon a470 powershot to my
Wifi only xoom, running tiamat 1.4.4 and honeycomb,
through an otg cable.the cable works and I can access USB
pens reading the content. Now as my camera does not
provide usb mass storage access but only mtp/ptp I cannot
manage to access photos directly plugging the USB cable.
I read that Verizon camera kit cable supports ptp on
Honeycomb systems but how? Is there any app or .ko
needed or is a compatibility issue related to my camera?
Thanks
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
I have the Motorola Xoom "camera " otg host cable. That's all the "kit " contains. I'm running the Tiamat ROM and I can not access my Canon Powershot either. So, if you have a working otg host cable, don't waste your money....
really ? nothing more than a simple OTG cable ? Thanks for the advice ! How is it supposed to work on stock ROM's if UMS is disabled ?
I 'm sure that there must a library for ptp/mtp on android: I read that some people had this feature working, being able to access photos (stored on the camera) through the stock gallery app.
Maybe the OTG cable is not enough...
Could be the camera brand. I have no idea though. I don't need to connect any of my cameras to my xoom.
Bumpity bump
Any resolution to this?
I have USB sticks working too but not ptp supported devices...
I'm having the same problem with my Canon 5D. Also tried Canon Ixus 130 and that didn't work either. I just tried installing the stock Australian image and then installing the 3.1 update and that does not work either... I asked around and found people that also had a canon 5D and Xoom and the combo worked for them.
that is so weird
I wish someone can shed some light on this...is this inherent with 3.1?
Do not know will this help in any meaningful way but did anyone tried connecting A470 running chdk? I do not have Xoom but there exist plethora of scripts for canon low end cameras making them just a little bit more useful. Higher end cameras have another way of enhancement with different program setting. Just my to cents...

USB OTG & Nikon D7000..

So it seams that my OTG cable works fine for thumbdrives and the likes. But when I attach my D7000, no dice. The activity light on the camera comes on for a second or two like its trying to negotiate the USB connection and then turns off.
I check the /mnt/usbOTG OR /usbOTG folder and get nada. After reviewing some of the other threads I pulled down the USB OTG Watcher and same behavior. Thumb drivers are recognized no problem, but when the D7000 is attached its like nothing is working.
Ideas?

You don't have to use that for a dslr. It should be just going into the gallery and hook up the camera.

That was the first thing I tried. Should have mentioned that. Opening the gallery does not show me anything from the camera.
Ok asked the wife. She says it should show imported pictures in the gallery when your camera is hooked up. It is a folder and then you can import them from there.

Also it could be the root your using. I stuck to stock root on mine but never tested her dslr on it. I an going to test stock 3.2.2 when w get our xooms back from the upgrade. I am going they put in the ability to use my hdd and other stuff with the otg cable. If not rooting here I come.

my xoom only detects my d7000 when it has 2 memory cards inserted in it. Well, it opens the gallery app with only 1 card loaded but shows 0 pics regardless of whether there are jpegs on the card or not. I'm running rooted 3.2 with the tiamat kernel.
Put 2 cards in and it works great! Now if only I could figure out how to get the raw images off the camera without a card reader...

I usually just set the camera to record a Raw file on one card and a .jpeg on the other so that I can transfer the .jpeg to the Xoom for preview on it's larger screen but leave the large Raw files on the camera's card since it will take up too much space on the Xoom and not be viewable. As another option, your second card in the camera could be the Eye-Fi card which has an Android app and will wirelessly transmit all files or just jpegs to the Xoom while you shoot.

This is good know that it is working. I'll have to keep playing with it and see, maybe get another OTG cable just to be sure.
Yeah, using the wrong OTA adapter would cause you problems. If a flash drive works with the adapter, the D7000 should work too.
Alternative method to OTP
Hi..
I also have nikon d7000 but i never use otg to tranfer my files. But if you want to transfer your files you can use other alternative methods to otg such as wifi sd card which share files with wireless connection or your can use Nikon d7000 camera firmware A:104/B:1.05 which is need to be install in your OS and then you can simply work on it. For more help and other alternative ways you can use nikon d7000 manual.

2.2.2 Moray Camera Support

Hi,
Been using the Tiamat ROM (Moray 2.2.2),for a while now and am very happy with the results. However I have recently attempted to attach my Canon 7D via my OTG USB cable and realized that it is no longer recognized. I have tried several other cameras, all with no response. My Xoom (before Tiamat),used to automatically recognize my camera being attached immediately and allow me to copy the pictures/video onto it. My mates Xoom running stock 3.2, recognizes all cameras without any trouble.
Is there any solution to this as I am about to head out on a trip and would like to be able to both backup/review my photos and remote tether my 7D via my Xoom(using one of the available Android tethering apps). I can use a USB card reader, but this will not allow me to tether the camera for taking time lapse sequences etc.
If anyone knows a fix for this it would be great!
Cheers,

[Q] A couple questions about the UG008

For anybody that isn't familiar with it, the UG008 is an RK3066 device very similar to the UG007 but in a larger case and with the addition of an external wifi antenna, ethernet port, and an analog A/V port. I went with it primarily because the analog A/V port allows you to connect a set of speakers when using it with an HDMI to DVI adapter (for viewing on a computer monitor) without the need for a separate USB sound card. Anyhow, to get to the point of this post...
Is there any way to add custom resolutions? It has the option for 1080p and 720p but the monitor I'm using has a native resolution of 1680x1050 (16x10). and stretches any non-native resolution to fill the screen. It's not bad in video, but text isn't as crisp as it should be.
Also, I was wondering if there is any way to connect another Android device with a usb cable to transfer files? I tried connecting my Note 2 which automatically launched the gallery app on the UG008 and gave me the option to transfer pictures but no way that I could find to transfer anything else. I assume if I could put the phone into mass storage mode it would work fine but unfortunately they seem to have done away with it in favor of MTP and PTP.
Thanks,
Tony

Other than a custom rom I wouldn't know of any other way to handle the resolution issue. No idea on the other device either. My question is on the recovery. Did u get one installed on it?
