Well I browsed through all the forums and I could not find anything that I am going to explain. There are some tits-bits here and there, but I hope this proves to be useful.
I will also explain if you have a xrecovery backup, then how to extract your games and progress from there.
Many of you might be switching ROMs very frequently or upgrading/downgrading their Android. While doing this, we lose all our apps and games and more importanly the game's PROGRESS, if we do not save them.
There are apps available to save apps/games and progress but there is a way to do all these thing MANUALLY. This for those who want the control in their hands , like me.
PART A:
Here's how you do:
1) Create a backup folder on the sdcard with a name that you like. eg. mybackup
1) from your filemanager or from the shell, browse to the directory /data/app and do ls -l. You will get a list of apps which you have installed.
2) Select the app that you want to save/backup and move it to sdcard folder that you have created. The names here would be long but it will be almost similar to the name you see in the UI.
For eg.

cp uk.co.aifactory.moveitfree.apk /sdcard/mybackup
. would be the command to backup Move It game.
3) Now go to the the directory /data/data and do a ls -l. browse through the list and find a directory which matches the name of the apk without the .apk extension.
for Eg. for the 'move it' game, you will find a directory uk.co.aifactory.moveitfree
Move this directory to the backup folder

cp -r uk.co.aifactory.moveitfree /sdcard/mybackup
.
For those working on shell, remember to do cp "-r" as you are copying a directory.
You are done!!. You have backed up your app and all the progress related to that app.
Now you can copy mybackup folder to your PC or keep it in the sdcard if you have enough space. Its your choice...
PART B:
How to get the progress and games back after flashing the ROM or after wipeout.
Its easy. Just reverse the steps mentioned above.
1) copy the .apk file from your backup folder to /data/app through filemanager or shell.
Eg.

cp /sdcard/mybackup/uk.co.aifactory.moveitfree.apk /data/app
2) copy the data directory to the location /data/data.
Eg.
Code:
cp -r /sdcard/mybackup/uk.co.aifactory.moveitfree /data/data
You are back to business, just browse through your apps and enjoy the games from where you left.
UPDATE :
For Angry Birds, when you are done with the above steps, delete the file
/data/data/com.rovio.angrybirdsrio/files/settings.lua
It app will not open up if you dont do it.

Those who have already backedup their ROMs and not saved their apps as mentioned above, dont worry, I have a solution for that too. I am specifically going to explain the method to get it from xrecovery backup.
When you backup your ROM or system using xRecovery, it stores all the data inside /sdcard/xrecovery/backup/<date>.
Inside that folder, there are 3 img files.
cache.img
system.img
data.img
data.img contains all the data/app/games that you had installed, while system.img contains everything that came bundled with ROM. It might differ a bit per devices, but mostly its data.img
I tried to open this file ".img" with a lot of extraction tools but none could help. Atlast, i got help from our great <zdzihu>, and he said, he saves the archive with yaffs2 compression.
There is an app "unyaffs2" which you can use to extract the contents of the archive. Get it from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910255
This app will extract the contents to the folder where you ask it to. Once you have your data, repeat the above mentioned steps to get your apps and games running!!

I hate having to remove apps everytime I flash a new ROM. So here is what I've done and I'm sure others too.
1) Open notepad in Windows.
2) Add these lines in it:
adb remount
adb shell rm system/app/*Stock*
adb shell rm system/app/IM.apk
adb shell rm system/app/*Facebook*
adb shell rm system/app/Flickr.apk
adb shell rm system/app/Mail.apk
adb shell rm system/app/htcmailwidgets.apk
adb shell rm system/app/Sprint_Navigation.apk
adb shell rm system/app/Sprint_NFL.apk
adb shell rm system/app/Sprint_Nscar.apk
adb shell rm system/app/HTCNew.apk
3) Save it as RemoveAPK.bat on desktop.
4) Double click this file to run it. (This will only work if SDK tools directory is in system path)
If SDK tools is not in your system path, you can place this script in the SDK tools folder and double click in there.
so now anytime a new ROM comes out, connect your phone, and double click. They'll be removed in literally a blink of an eye.
I'd attach this to the thread, but *.bat files are not allowed as attachments.

Just find an existing update package (any of them) and modify the update script to your liking and also put files in /system/ that you want in your ROM. (You could also put files into /data/app/ to load your programs, but I use A2SD which needs to be mounted first).
This also inserts my favorite Boot animation and favorite HTC keyboard into the ROM. My media files I keep in the /sdcard/ directory, so I just delete them from the ROM as well.
The benefits of doing this is that I can leave this on the root of my sdcard and just flash this ZIP after flashing a ROM.

Good idea! I never thought of using a bat...I just had a text file I copy and past the commands I use alot...this will save me some time!
great idea. me personally I use the autosign.bat and just unzip the rom remove all the stuff I dont want, add all my tweeks and customizations in and then resign it before I flash it but that becuase I have stuff I add in so thats the easiest way for me to do it. plus then all my stuff is there right at boot.

Yeah. but then you have to unzip. That's too many clicks for me lol. I like the signing part though. You know what you can do. You can probably modify a script to do all that for you.
for instance not worry about modifying a zip, but after it's installed, just run a script that would remove apks, add your themes and apks that you'd want. So you dont have to unzip and re-sign. Unless you end up re-releasing your ROMs to others.
Bat and Cmd files are AMAZING things. Everyone touts VBScript like its a god send, but good ole Bat never fails me.

you could write a batch with a menu system to give various options.
I used to write those all the time until I switched to VB and added graphics.

I dont plan on releasing any roms anytime soon since everything I do is theme stuff but by doing that way makes it a lot easier if I fubar something bad with a new mod becuase then I just reflash with the base that I know is good. that and I do it so much it only takes me a bout 1.5 minutes to unzip remove the stuff I dont and drag everything in then resign.

Hmm. I'm with wtphoto on this one, but I can certainly think of other applications for this. I've never messed with this kinda stuff before. Quick couple of questions:
1. If sdk is in my system path, does that mean I wouldn't need to move stuff to the tools folder to resign it, push it etc?
If so:
2. How do I do this black magic?

if sdk tools directory is in your system path, that means any app in that directory can be called from anywhere in your computer, including push.
The directions are in the first post for auto remove script if you need.
Or you can purchase Root Manager for a dollar and remove the apps that way..

Both methods are great (Update.zip is method I use). Not to mention, with this method, you don't have to be on a computer to do it. Just write the update file once, always leave it on your SD Card and run whenever you want... that's convenient to me.
Plus both files can be distributed to someone whose not tech savvy to wipe what they don't want... thank god!

Not saying Root Manager isn't a good purchase, but a .bat file will remove all the apps I want gone faster than any other method I've found. Just double-click and they're all gone!

Well... personally, there's no need to pay for something if you're capable of doing it yourself (Not saying you aren't) -- especially when this method is more streamlined and a lot more efficient.

uhhh....that's nice...i'm going to give this a shot....it is more convinient then double clicking....it stays on the phone too.... no need to connect phone to comp..

i want to save a file to the / directory of my phone.
when using adb in recovery mode with $su and mount -a, it seems as if i'm able to us cp to move a file to it, ls shows the file afterwards.
but after booting, the file is gone.
i tried it with a update.zip, same result.
anybody has an idea why this is so and if there is a solution to my problem?

use root explorer from the market....you can simply copy the file you need to the "/" directory with this app!
I think / is in RAM. There are system and data partitions on internal flash, but there isn't / one, right?
@androgiallo i don't know about root explorer, bur SU File Manager & Terminal couldn't do the trick ...

I mean "/" isn't persistent - I think it is created in the RAM when you turn on your device, then you could change its contents, but after rebooting it's gone.
For sure there is a way to install something there. If I'm right about that RAM, then there should be somewhere some image of initial contents of "/" partition (they are copied to RAM at boot) - probably in boot.img . So it's possible, but not that easy as just copying a file to "/".
These are just my guesses, maybe I'm wrong.
Ahh and why do you want to place some file to "/"? Why not to e.g. /data/?
i use a keyfile for my password manager and i have to enter the path to it manually every time i open the database, so i want to keep the path as short as possible ...
I don't know if ADB is even the best tool to do this, but I want to be able to copy the entire file system off the EEE pad onto a pc. I want everything, starting from the "/" root directory. I want the entire file system and all files copied over so I can work with them on the pc.
I have root (verified by # when entering adb shell and various root apps successfully running.)
My thought was to do "adb pull /" from a dos shell (running windows 7), but not everything copies over. I get lots of messages about "skipping special file", I dont get the /data/data directory, etc etc.
Is there a tool or some way to copy over the entire file system starting from "/" ?

Nvflash will let you download the APP partition which is the system folder. It's an ext4 filesystem that you can mount and poke around.
USP is the data partition.
Be careful not to format your TF!
Clockwork mod will backup the system.img and you can either mount or unyaffs this. I forget which one. Same for data.img

I don't want to edit anything, I only want to examine.
In particular, I want to take a snapshot of all the files and filesystem (directory structures, files, etc) before an app is run. After the app is run and exited, I want to take another snapshot and look at what has changed. If there are new files created, existing files edited, etc. I want to search for strings (grep), etc.
I was hoping I could copy all the files to do this, but perhaps there is another way like one of those you suggested (nvlash, clockwordmod, ??)

Expert or not, I really appreciate your advice.
I took your initial suggestion to be to use NVflash and/or clockworkmod to make backups of the device. It seems from some other threads I've read that the tablet drive consists of up to 15 or 16 partitions, two of which are USP and APP.
So conceivably I could back those up "before", and mount the backup images somewhere to look at, preferably on a pc.
Then, I could install and run the app in question, and use NvFlash and/or CWM again to make backup images, and look at them for comparison.
On another note, I tried installing busybox and running cp to move, for example, /data to the external SD card, but I think I need a bigger SD card.
I wonder if
busybox cp / /Removable/MicroSD/targetdirectory
would work to copy everything?
The danger with that is that some directories and files are virtual- /proc and I think /var are virtual directories. Files like dev/null dev/zero would be problematic!
You might want to do specific parts, such as /data, or even /data/data/your.app's.java.name.here
You could use "find ." and write a script to pull everything with adb, but it would take forever, so it might not be a true snapshot.
Have you looked at the ddms or some of the other tools in the android SDK?
Sorry to confuse. By snapshot I did not mean screenshot. I meant just a record of the state of the device at that point in time. Meaning, all the files before the app was run. Then all the files (any new ones, changes to existing ones, any deleted) AFTER the app was run. I want to look at what has changed.
Still, thanks for the ddms idea. I have to look at any other tools in the adb environment that could be useful.

I am tired of restoring all my apps settings and replaying my games from the beginning each time I install a new rom or do a factory reset so I was looking (a couple of hours ago) for how to restore my apps setting and especially my games progress after every data wipe......
I read that many users faced problems using helium and some similar apps (Titanium Backup seems to be perfect for this job but it's a paid app and that is the problem:laugh and after all this I figured out that what were doing these apps to make a full backup of an app is just making a copy of the app.apk and the app folder in /data/data where app is the name of the considered app(sorry if this is well-known but I really didn't know)
So I made this tutorial on how to backup/restore your apps and data MANUALLY because this let you choose which app to backup/restore...
This tutorial is for noobs (because I am noob!!!!!)
Requirements:
Galaxy SL or any other android device.
ES explorer or any other file explorer with root access support.
Your phone needs to be rooted.
Backing up app and data:
Enable your explorer read/write permissions (for ES explorer >>settings>>root options).
Go to /data/app and copy the app.apk to your SD card backup folder.
Go to /data/data and copy app folder to your SD card backup folder.
that's it, now your app is fully backed up.
Restoring app and data:
Install app.apk from backup folder
Go to /data/data and remove the existing app folder (don't launch the app now because it won't start)
Copy the app folder from the backup folder to /data/data
launch your app now, it should work!
that's it, now your app is fully restored.
Notes:
I tried this to backup and restore NFS most wanted progress and it WORKED!!!!
Maybe this methode don't work for some apps but it should work for the rest of them.
For system apps go to /system/app .
app folder should start with "com." (for example "com.ea.games.nfs13_na" for NFS most wanted).
I don't know what is the difference between this methode and the adb methode so can someone tell me if there is a difference.
Restoring apps settings from/to different android versions may not work

But there is some small point. The Android system uses technical users to separate the data of the apps from each other. If you copy the files this way then the copied files will belong to root and be accessible for all apps.
So you should also take care that the file and folder attributes for rights, users and groups are correctly set. But there is some small point. The Android system uses technical users to separate the data of the apps from each other. If you copy the files this way then the copied files will belong to root and be accessible for all apps.

Hi ThemGo! You have reopened a bit old thread :laugh: Now a days, the play store is bull of useful apps to backup almost everything on your android device. I found that Titanium backup Pro is the best among them all. Its a paid app but it really deserve it

Of course, but what - as happened to me last month - if your phone dies suddenly, you get yourself a new one and fortunately have a not too old backup made with cwm recovery, what will you do?
Yes, extract the necessary data from the backup and then copy it manually to the new phone.

Havent really tried that but if both phones are using same android version that may work. Because some of my apps that were backed up on Jellybean are not working on Kitkat & Lollipop even when using the same phone so I guess the backup procedure is not just a matter of copying & pasting.
Hi, I'm on android 10 stock version.
When I do a new installation I like to do a debloat of everything that does not interest me, I usually do it with adb shell and everything is ok.
The problem I am seeing is that when I am in the recovery, I access the /system/reserve and /system/india folders with the filemanager but I cannot see the files to delete them.
I can delete the entire folders but when I return to the system, the system emojis are deleted (any keyboard that you put does not have emojis, or for example if I have icons in the name of a contact it is not visible, it looks like a kind of rectangle, like if it were a character unrecognizable by the system).
From the rootexplorer pro, I can see the files in those two folders, but when I try to delete the files it tells me that "attempt failed". I have root permissions to delete from magisk. The files in the folders I see as R/O. I cannot switch to R/W.
I can only delete entire folders, but emojis disappear on next reboot.
PLEASE, does anyone know how to access those folders to delete the blotware that is in them? I have looked 5 days for xda and other websites and I can not find anything about it on this subject.

Use terminal and this commands
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
Now you can use terminal/adb to delete files.
Or flash this in TWRP:
