So I decided to make this small guide, on how to partitioning your sd card with paragon partition manager… There is many different ways, including a script an xda forum member created, and ubuntu as well.. But I assume paragon partition manager might be the best for all people who don’t know how to use Linux very much..

Thanks! That will be useful for many... this should be sticky along with the sapphire/magic port (after someone starts a new thread for the newer builds. 600 pages!) Or at least a wrap stick (a thread that contains many highly used threads like in the developement and hacking section under the main thread) would be useful.

its a good guide, but i have a question everytime i try to format this way in paragon it says cannot create partition because all primary slots are taken, it says this when i try to resize or create new. any ideas?
Ok I resized my card using paragon my fat32 is 5gb and my EXT2 is 1.5gb. I went and tried to follow these instructions http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Haykuro_Apps_to_SD and for some reason I am not seeing the system/xbin/busybox folder.

how many partitiosn it list for the sdcard? sometimes when you use the usb cable then tend to mess up.. try creatign the FAT32 formatign it and than rezise and make teh ext2

i am still using JF build haven't tried Haykuro builds... sicne my phone is smooth im kinda of lazy to be recofniguring not sure how that works mayeb some oen else can help you.

funny ting, my pc never reads my sd card unless its through the phone. Ive tried the card on multiple systems, and i get the same results. so im forced to modify the card while its in the phone.

A few things here:
1. Unless you're planning on downloading every app ever made, you're never going to need a ext2 partition larger than 500mb, and even that is a LOT. I tried to fill my partition and managed to squeeze over 300 apps on there before I ran out of room...then I had to painfully uninstall them all cause I didnt feel like reformatting/reflashing/restoring.
2. Make sure you're using the right version of apps-to-sd. Haykuro's latest builds can be found here. The apps-to-sd versions are linked at the very top of the page.
3. The directories you're looking for are NOT on the sd card. They are only visible on the phone through adb. If you're not familiar with adb, do a quick forum search on how to set it up.

when uiu partition via usb cable the partition tend to mess up.. and not moutn o n the phone..
what you can do is, insert the sdcard check min my computer under management and assign a letter to th sdcard so the pc will read it mount it

I been trying to format the ext2 in my SDcard with Paragon Partition Manager but it saids I can use a demo version but it will not allow me to do the ext2 it saids I have to buy the full version. could someone tell me where to get the software that will work? thanks

Do anyone knows if there is a real advantage in creating a partition in the phone sd card, [sd-ext]?
I read that it solves this error: E:can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p2
(File Exists).
But, does the phone has a real gain when you format and create a new sd-ext partition?

If you have a ROM that has data2ext or app2ext then you'll notice a speed increase as well as a drop in usage on your phone's internal memory. I have a MT3GS and with data2ext I went from an 1100 in quadrant to a 1600

When you say, data2ext or app2ext, are you saying app's that can be installed in the ex-sd card?
Can I do that in cwm or there is a better way?

Data2ext and app2ext are ROM add-ons that enable you to either move the entire data partition to your sd-ext or just all of your installed apps. If you use data2ext your apps are automatically moved since they're stored in the data partition. You would flash them the same way you flash a ROM if the mods are available for your phone. Just search the forum for your phone if you want to know if you have those options.

I installed move2sd enabler.
So I can to move all the apps to the sd-ext partition I created?

I honestly haven't used move2sd so I'm not sure how that works. It should be a separate script like I mentioned before.
I created a new partition in clockworkmod 512mg 32mg swap.
The phone restarts, all seems ok, but when I restart again in CWM and select format sd-ext partition, it says that I don't have one.
I'm trying to find a way to fix this issue but until now nothing...
Check if you have a blocksize of 4096 (there's a command, don't know it offhand) and make sure it's actually an ext partition, it might be a different type or may be the wrong type of ext, such as ext2 when it needs ext3 or vice versa.

CWM erased all the data inside my card but did not create a new partition.
Do you thing it's because I have lagfix on with ext4 part type?
Honestly I have no idea. I used the parted script/command from adb to do my partitioning. Maybe try that or try converting to ext2?

I see a lot of posts that say to use RA-Recovery with sdk adb but does it works with an SGS?
I don't know honestly, you'll need to look in the SGS forum and see if a Ra recovery is posted there. Parted works with adb and can be added to any ROM regardless of recovery menu.
From what I saw Ra-recovery is not for sgs's.
I still didn't saw any posts that explains how to do a sd-ext new partition for a Samsung Galaxy S, only for HTC's and other phones.
If you happen to find anything that explains how to do this for a SGS be a friend and tell me ok?

A friend of mine has an SGS so I'll ask him and see what he's done with his. I know he rooted and flashed CM to it but i'm not sure if he did anything else like data2ext or anything like that.

I just installed a new ROM and the SDCARD and SDCard-ext are in the wrong location. They are listed under the root director ( / ) and /storage instead of under /mnt/sdcard
Does it work? You could create a symlink. If that fixed it, put it in a script on bootup.

Does it work is a relative question. (wasn't meant to sound wise-a$$). I can access them, but apps do not see them at all. They are looking for the cards in /mnt therefor not finding them.
I changed them in /system/etc/vold.fstab but now it won't boot. The not booting is not an issue, I can fix that, but I don't know how to fix these incorrect paths/
No one else who's using this ROM is having these problems? I say either reflash, create symlinks, or choose another ROM.

Make a script in your /system/etc/init.d directory, so these links will be created on every boot.

From what I have read you cannot use them on FAT.
Why does editing this file not work? I fail to see how Android could do anything other than read the file, provided permissions are the same.

The internal memory is not FAT; typically, only the 1st partition on the SD card is FAT, everything else should be EXT. So, executing ln -s /storage /sd-ext should work (or wherever it's currently being mounted).

I meant the card but ln is not working.
One more thing I am going to try is an ADB pull and push. If that doesn't work I really need some community support.

Is there a good reason that you don't want to use another ROM?
Mainly speed and compatibility. I need the offline commands only available in JB. Stock ROM is dead slow and is only ICS. Other custom ROMs were also on the slow side and/or battery hogs.

Well the way my phone is laid out is
System (I assume too large so they split it in two which resulted in the below SD-Card)
SD-Card
SD-Card EXT (The actual SD Card) - FAT32
I assume the System and SD-Card are standard Android partition format.
Do you use a file manager on the phone, such as ES File Explorer? Are you familiar with using adb?
Edit: Basically, I'm trying to figure out the exact path of the mounted partitions, and where they're supposed to be mounted.

They are 100% supposed to be mounted under: /mnt/sdcard and /mnt/sdcard-ext
Right now they are mounting to: /storage/sdcard and /storage/sdcard-ext
There is also an entry in under root ( /sdcard and /sdcard-ext --- For these two I am booting into stock ROM to see if they are suppose to be directly in root as well, will post up when I know)
Check the scripts in your init.d to see if one of them is mounting the sd partitions under /storage.
I suppose you could also try booting without the sd card in place, and see if those /storage directories still exist. Not sure how much that will tell you, though.

The init.d for sure says to load sdcards to /storage . (on this particular ROM only)
I will try without the sdcard as you suggested and let you know. Battery died on me, phone won't boot even when plugged in until at least 10%.
Which script is mounting the sd card to /storage? Is it part of the ROM, or is it something which the dev included in this ROM? I ask in case the ROM expects the sd card to be mounted there.
Regardless, try changing the script to link to /sdcard.

This stupid SdCard / ExtSdCard arrangement is making me pull my hair out. I just realized my titanium backups weren't really backups since they were being stored on my internal memory.
I managed to change my backup folder and free up some space by moving all my backups to the SD card, but for some reason I cannot move apps to SD through Titanium or any other app I've tried.
Does anyone know how to do this? Is there a setting in titanium I need to change or is this just something we have to deal with forever short of flashing a custom rom?

I've found the real problem, but not the solution.
My Relay runs ICS. It is rooted, and you have to root to even touch any of this. The phone has a binary, /system/bin/sdcard that controls the internal memory and your SDcard. now, I have found that if you are rooted, you can chmod this binary (or use rooted ES File explorer to remove all executable properties) so that it can no longer run, then reboot. then you can run, as superuser "mount -o rw,bind /mnt/extSdCard /mnt/sdcard"
Seems great... Except vfat doesn't like to be bound in such a fashion, and you quickly lose write access and it starts mangling your files.
vfat just doesn't seem to work for us in this case. I've changed mine back, and reformatted my SDcard to be NTFS and mounted with paragon NTFS/HFS, which has completely stabilized my filesystem. only problem is, I can't get this to mount -o bind worth a damn.
I'm toying with the idea of reformatting my SDCard part vfat and either part NTFS or EXT4. maybe I get get the phone to natively recognize ext4 for the sdcard (even if I have to create a script myself)
keypoints I've found in this process:
1. the sdcard binary only allows access to 1023 files at once on either the SDcard, or the memory block it is using as the SDcard. too many pictures in your gallery? so sorry... can't load them all.
2. the physical device for your sdcard is /dev/block/mmcblk1. the partitions are mmcblk1p* (starting with 1)
3. the phone will not allow the sdcard binary to be killed manually. removing the executable permission and then rebooting the phone seems to be the only way to get it to stop.
4. vfat is prone to errors, and android seems to love screwing with the card. getting off vfat seems to be crucial to this process.
As you've gotten no other replies, and this is a gigantic concern for me as well, I'm going to keep working on this myself, in the hopes that I can get the phone to actually use the SDcard the way we hope it can be used.
I have a Sprint Galaxy Note $ Running Stock og5 Rom Rooted via Beast Mode TWRP then Play update, then flashed to Plazma Kernel. I have modified the /etc/permissions/platfom.xml file to include Group Id media_rw in the write to external storage permission and mounted the /mnt/media_rw/estSDcard as r/w in the root explorer portion of ES File Manager and it seemed to work fine for as long as I can remember but now if I try to copy or paste or send something to /storage/extSDcard it is created asychrously and ends up in the LOST.dir folder after a simple unmount remount or reboot or SDcard pull. Other apps are having the same problems like app backup restore and Btitorrent and others when trying to write directly to extSDcard I even went ass far as adding sdcard_all to the aforementioned gid permission set. It seems like such an obvious thing that has been overlooked by develpoers of the rom. I can create masting folders "no asychronously' if I do so buy navigating to /mnt/media_rw/extSDcard rather than /storage/extSDcard and they'll last but not all programs will allow that directory in their settings. Furthermore ES download Manager won't function with either directory and will not allow their app backup file to be saved the /mnt directory. only /0 or /storage/extSDcard.
I have exhausted my abilities with this and have no answer also It seems to be a new problem, and I haven't done anything I can think of to cause this. Partition table is 55000mb Fat32 17009mb ext4 journal partition on the extSDcard. Any Ideas?
Below you can see The before and after of unmounting and remounting my sd card resulting in Populated Lost.dir and loss of created folders also you can see the way that all nav methods resultu in same permission set when checked with a root explorer "total Commander"
wELL i DON'T KNOW WHY BUT REFORMATTING THE SD CARD TO A SINGLE FAT 32 VOLUME SOLVED THE LEAK. i FIRST TRIED AN ALTERNATE SD CARD WITH A SIMILAR PATITION TABLE (EXT2/FAT32) BUT HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS EXCEPT THE DATA WOULD SIMPLY BE GONE INSTEAD OF IN THE LOST.DIR FOLDER. i HAVE YET TO IMPLEMENT THIS TO MY PRIMARY USE SD CARD because of the fact that I have backups and files that I need on that card from before the leak. I anticipate the same results, fingers crossed.
If ANYONE has any incite into why the partition table set up as it was would affect the retention of data in this manner please let me know.

Thanks, I was using stock rom though. And the caps lock was an accident, at any rate i have changed roms and the issue appeared to be a faulty sd card to begin with. I wasn't able to retain data from my reader writer to phone on my primary sd ince reformatted but was when I used a different one. Anyway thanks for the advice and I will use it if I have different questions
