No you can flash without root.

You only need to be rooted in order to use ROM Manager... If you just unlock the bootloader and flash/boot Clockwork, I believe you can flash about anything.

thanks, I think you are right......with Clockwork anything can be flashed...

Having SU and Busybox installed is helpfully with some apps that require root such as titanium backup and root explorer.

[Q] Already on 2.3.3 How do I root now??

Hi all.
I know now that it was a mistake to wait for 2.3.3 before i rooted but i did and now i don't know how.
All the methods i can find don't work with 2.3.3.
I'm still quite green with regards to android although i did root my old LG GT540 using Z4root which was really easy.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Really? So if you unlock the bootloader (guides should be available on the development forum) and you flash ClockworkMod recovery(CWM - again there are guides for this), then you can't flash the superuser.apk? I had some trouble, but it turns out that I had to mount /system in CWM for the .apk to flash properly.
It's ridiculously easy to root the Nexus S. Before 2.3.3 you could root it without even unlocking the bootloader, now you have to unlock it first. Which is also ridiculously easy.
The only problem is that the unlocking process completely wipes all user data and the SD card. So before you root, do a complete backup. Then follow the instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545

if you have clockwork mod use this as a restore and you will have a rooted 2.3.3 its the easiest way to do it.

just unzip and put the backup folder in your clockworkmod recovery folder boot into recovery and restore 2.3.3 takes 2 minutes and you will boot up with a rooted 2.3.3

no problem. i dont mind helping when i know.
I flashed the full 2.3.3 rom, im still unlocked and I flashed cmw via original root method and it completed but when I boot into stock recovery then choose recovery I get the triangle with ! inside it
You have to get root explorer and rename install recovery.sh in the etc folder so that clockwork recovery will stick. If you don't everytime you reboot it will go back to stock

Sweet, what do you rename it to?

HTC one x question about twrp

Hello. I am new to the HTC one x coming previously from an HTC inspire. I am with att. I followed the directions and unlocked the bootloader. I have been reading and noticed S-Off is still being worked on. I'm Confused on what my next step is to load a custom ROM. Sorry I know this has probably been answered but I'm still confused. Can I do the next set of steps without a computer and just do it from my phone? I downloaded an app called recovery manager not sure of that will help me out. Thanks for any help you guys can provide. I'm on 2.20 and 4.0.4 thanks again.

I think at that time after unlock of the bootloader you will need to install a recovery software the one we use is TWRP i would stick with 2.2.0.0 and install it thought goomanager that is avaliable though the play store.
Instructions : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677447
To use goomanager I need to be rooted though right?I don't think I'm rooted. Farthest I have gotten so far is unlocking the bootloader. And I'm not sure what to do after that. I'm not sure if I can do the rest from my phone (which I hope I can). Thanks ks for your help.

Do you absolutely have to flash SuperSU to flash ROMs? Can you just go right from TWRP and flash a rooted ROM and be considered as "rooted"?
Thanks

You can just flash a custom ROM, which will have SuperSU or SU cooked in. Only need to flash SuperSU if you want to stay on stock ROM and have root.
you made your situation sound different. the steps i take is use my token, flash recovery, then flash a rom or supersu depending if i want a custom rom or keep using stock.

Just Root no Rom

Hey I just want to root not use a Custom Rom. Is this possible? I am on JB 4.1.1 If its not possible what is the easiest and best way to get root and still be able to use my keyboard dock.

The above thread should help. You don't have to install a custom ROM if you don't want to

That thread is the key, that's what I did hours earlier.
Basically:
1. Unlock Bootloader
2. Install TWRP recovery
3. Flash root files using TWRP
4. Instal supersu
5. Tada!
I would also recommend browser2ram after you have rooted.

Root advice

I have unlocked my bootloader using HTCdev.com and now need superuser access and to flash a custom recovery I want to use cwm as this was what I used when I did my nexus one many moons ago, but Rom manager tells me there was an error, what am I doing wrong?
Thanks Ryan

Never used Rom manager, but follow this thread from step 2. The latest CWM recovery is linked in that thread. And have a look at the various stickies in the Development forum.

Don't use Rom manager.. I've hard bricked three different phones in the past when I was a young buck by allowing it to flash a recovery... And cwm isn't even really supported on this device use twrp 2.3.3 its the best... If you use a twrp IMG you can install it through fastboot..

Yes. As long as you have a custom recovery installed. 'Root' is in the ROM.
In other words if the device is not rooted, but had a custom recovery installed, you can use the recovery to flash a new ROM that already has root access enabled. You don't have to have root before hand.
