[Q] LG Quantum help - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My lg quantum is not working please help

Wow, helpful... How about some symptoms... What is it doing, when did it start, what were you doing last on it?

also, if you ave a device specific question, try the device specific forum
LG Quantum Forum

the screen comes on when i plug it in but it dosent do anything after that

"plug it in"? does it work without plugging it in? I assume you mean USB to PC or power. Maybe a problem with the battery? not seated correctly?
If you turn the phone on and it doesn't respond I suggest you go to the next ATT store.

when i plug it out everything gose black

seeing that you had a number of phones in your hand I assume you know what you are doing.
Your description does not allow anybody to really help you. You need to do a step by step. It may be completely obvious to you when you say when I unplug it it goes black, but it's not to others.
1) what is the state of the phone before you plug it in. Is it working or not?
2) what do you plug it into?
3) when you plug it in, does it play the ringtone or vibrate? It should.
4) When you open Zune software on PC, does it see the phone?
5) when you unplug the phone goes black? Then nothing? just dead?
if it is dead before you plug it in and it comes alive when you plug it in and it goes dead when you unplug it, my suspicion is battery, battery life, maybe not seated correctly. unplug it, plug it back in.
My post would probably be exponentially shorter if you gave more details on what's actually happening.
btw. You did not answer my questions in my post at all. How can I help if you are not answering simple questions? Are you playing a bad joke on us

3nope it just gose to lg screen and stays there
4nope cant see it
5and yep just dead

well, sounds like dead is the correct word to use. Since you can't get into the phone to do a hard reset via the About button. Try this:
1. Power off the phone. Remove and re-insert the battery to make sure.
2. Press and hold the middle of the Volume button and the Camera button. While holding these buttons press also the Power button.
3. Wait until the screen shows "Cold Boot" then release the Power button only.
4. Keep holding the middle of Volume and Camera buttons pressed until the Welcome screen appears.
If it still fails to boot the next is to try to install a fresh ROM for the Quantum. There is one right here with instructions on how to install for several regions.
good luck

Well, guess that's what you get from a dead phone off of eBay. Just saw your other threads in the quantum forum. Try to flash the rom that is posted there. Go to an att store (good luck with explaining you got it fromebay)

it works with other battries but i use a captivate battery and its hard to keep it in to start up

ok i got my battery to day and tryed to do the thing you posted
when i hold the power button it comes on but when i keep holding waiting for the coldboot screen it just turns off

It sounds like your battery was too drained. If thebattery is really ou of charge, the phone won't start up, even if the phone is plugged in. It might take a few hours on the charger to get enough charge in the battery to run the phone. I suppose if the battery is bad, it'd do the same thing but never actually start.

[q] help! My phone wont do anything!

hey guys,
my phone litteraly wont do anything. i f*ed up some fonts using type fresh, then tried to restore using the odin3 downloader. i accidentally closed it, and now my phone wont boot up/react to any buttons pressed. any help? thanks guys!
had the same problem. i cant figure out how to even get odin working, it says one click but when i hook up it to odin it gives me a message that still doesnt tell me ****. i had to send my phone back for a new one and told them i used easyroot on the market bc i didnt know what it was and it sounded cool but now i know not to ever do that again that it messd up my phone. Praying to god that they dont charge my for anything
You should still be able to enter bootloader mode by turning phone off and holding down up/down vol and pwr simultaneously until boot screen flashes then release power button only
it wont even do that
open odin (use the stock one click version)
with the phone off (remove/reinsert the battery if need be) and not plugged in; hold vol. down and insert the usb cable (keep holding vol. down untill you see the download screen). this should put you into download mode and if you have the right drivers odin should recognize the phone.
I've stuffed my captivate on a few occasions and so far I have been able to use this method to get into download mode and fix it.
it wont do anything at all. it wont power on, show up in adb, anything... and stupid att wont do ANYTHING -_- oh well. any help would be appreciated!
Have any of you offering support to the OP actually had your phone in the described state? I've read a few posts where the phone is seemingly completely dead as the OP describes and no one says they've successfully recovered from that state. All I ever see is the same old button combinations/battery/usb shenanigans and statements of that should work and that the phone is unbrickable. I have personally seen a device that was behaving in such a manner and no combination of battery pulling, usb plugging, button holding, or tongue twisting would generate anything from the phone. The only thing the phone would do was get hot.
same here. Phone showed bright green screen...wasnt done with teh flash and said it was finished...now the nly thing I can get is power and hold the vlume up for some IRQ and hex stuff. I posted a questionthis morning but...serious. Vol up and down and any things else gives nothign but a black screen..battery out...back in anything..its torched.

Did you read the rest of the posts? The OP already stated several times that the phone does nothing. I realize that most people will say it does nothing or is "bricked" if it simply shows the "connect to computer" screen, but the OP has stated more than once that the phone shows nothing. Yes, everyone is trying to help, but simply repeating what has been said numerous times before doesn't help.
Has anyone actually recovered a phone that displays NOTHING? No logos, no recovery, no nothing.
Last night, i turned off the light in my room when i noticed a glowing from my desk. i walked over, and it turns out my captivate's screen was in fact on, it was just a faint black glow, and none of the power buttons would do anything. when i took the battery out, it shut off completely!
As I pointed out here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=757293
Im pretty sure it was my fault for not completely following instructions on the ext4 one click install root, settings.db etc so everyone needs to make sure if the dev says flash before..do it.
State of the phone was, it would not completely power on..therefor no usb drivers would load and Odin cannot see the phone and it can no longer flash..the only thing I could get it to do was show a screen with that text. I put in my post. I ordered it via letstalk.com so I sent it back and assuming they get the same result Ill have a new one hopefully by the end of the week. Im just glad I stil had my old iphone3 to slap my sim card in.
The odin one click flash thing..it just flaked right at the start it looked like..but I cant be sure because as soon as I saw a blue progress bar I stepped into the kitchen for abtou 30 sec..I came back and the screen was florescent green and Odin said it was done. I knew something was wrong as it was way too fast so I unplugged, removed the battery and set it back in...from there on out it would do nothing with the power button unless on a semi rare occasion if I hit the volume up button and power I got the IRQ stuff.
Annoying as I had a nandroid backup just before I started messing with it.
i just sent mine into samsung... back to mah ol trusty blackjack. gonna have to get used to supermario bros 3 instead of spyro....
ANYWAYS theyre sending me a new one!

Hey thanks, but i already sent it to em... thank you everyone for your help!
Just a note... i said before hold vol down and plug in usb. I had it in a pretty bad state tonight. Played around. Same idea as before, but had to hold vol up and vol down. If i brick a few more times, i'll give a better guide. But this phone can DEFINITELY come back from a state where you can't even get it to power on. Figured any additional info on this would be good.

[Q] Phone won't stay in download mode?

I'm having some weird problems getting the phone into download mode. If I hold down voldown + power + trackball, the phone goes into download mode and is recognized, but then leaves download mode about 5 seconds later. The screen goes black and the charging screen turns on for a few seconds and then also goes black. If I just plug in the phone to charge, the charging screen turns on for a few seconds and then cycles with a black screen.
Is there something up with the charging circuitry? Is it possible to get the phone to stay in download mode?
Try doing the forced download mode method
Are you talking about the volume down + trackpad? Same thing happens, download mode screen flashes for ~5 seconds, phone turns off, starts flashing charging screen.
I also have a download mode jig, but that isn't working either.
Also, new development: the phone won't even turn on now when I hold down the power button. Bad battery?
No he means pull battery, connect usb, hold power, volume up, volume down, camera, and tackpad and insert battery. It should FORCE the phone into download mode.
Sent from the phone everyone has forgotten about!
That works, but I still get kicked out of DL mode after about 5 seconds. The issue was never getting into download mode--all button combinations work for that--but the problem is I get kicked out of it after a few seconds.
Hmmmm. I think its probably a bad battery.
Sent from the phone everyone has forgotten about!
Alright. I'll definitely check that out and get a new battery.
Got the battery today. Unfortunately, still the same problem! The Sidekick boot screen now displays in place of the battery charging screen, but I still get kicked out after 5 seconds.
Damn, well the only thing I can think is a problem with the board not receiving enough power. But I don't know, maybe someone else can help you better.
Sent from the phone everyone has forgotten about!
Another thread reminded me...
Fixed the problem! Seemed to be a ribbon cable or some sort of loose connection. I opened up the phone (all the way), removed the RF shield, unplugged all the ribbon/connector cables (minus the one for the camera) and removed the whole board from the phone case. Checked the connections, put everything back together snugly. It now works like a charm.
same problem
would you make a tutorial on how to do this ?

Yeah i had the same problem iv been trying to go into recovery mode and safe mode. I cant do it im having the same exact problem. I get kicked out every 5 seconds but Redct has a point. There may not be enough power going to the phone. I may attempt at taking the phone apart extremely carefully. If this works ill post then its a manufacture problem for not assembling the phone right or not finding out that people do lots of things with their phone and the phones is just a bunch of computer componets wraped around a piece of plastic. Better quality phones must be sturdy.
So I attempted to take apart the phone and put everything back together and successfully booted. I it booted into the Android OS but then for some reason crashed and entered the boot loop again god this is irritating

Same Problem
I am having the same problem. I took the phone apart, but I couldn't figure out how to get the circuit boards out to unplug the ribbon wires, can you tell me what to do? I had the same problems a few weeks back, but it was staying in download mode then, but now it won't stay in download mode for more than 5 seconds. I got a new phone because of it(LG Optimus). I would really like to get my Sidekick going again though!
Try using heimdal n enable flash bootloaders n hold the volume keys

I'm attempting this fix. Got arround taking out the board and just need some help with what to do with the RF. I can't simply take it out and put it back, my guess. Any help is appreaciated. Like what kind of tool would I need for that? Thanks!
The RF shield or the RF 5000? I'm confused.
BTW... If anyone needs help with how to dismantle the phone, follow this thread. It can be found in General section.
I know this forum is ancient, but I'm working on an E-Bay phone with this exact issue. I found the following thread the most useful and informative on the problem:

[Q] Black screen after FW Upgrade, only vibrates.

Hello!
I just received my Infinity and started working on it, since there was a new Firmware available I downloaded and installed it.
When done it said "shutting down" and turned the Infinity off.
And this is were the trouble began .. since the last few hours I am trying to get it to work again but nothing seems to work.
Pressing the reset button with a paperclick won't work.
Volume down + Power only lets the Tablet vibrate after 10-12 seconds
Pressing power for 20 seconds (ASUS suggested this..) does the same thing.
with/without A/C Charger or docking station same thing, I get absolutely nothing on the screen.
When plugging it in via USB I get the APX mode.
Is there anything I can do at all? I don't want to send it back of course and thought APX Mode will maybe help me install and / fix something "blind" since I think the issue might be related to the Firmware upgrade..
Thanks in advance

I did try the button combinations, and for NVFlash it says: THIS REQUIRES A NON-BRICKED AND UNLOCKED DEVICE. IT WON'T WORK ON ALREADY BRICKED DEVICES
Well.. I think mine already could be bricked, and I can't unlock it by installing the apk
If pressing Volume Down +Power only give you a black screen and not even the Asus logo it means you are bricked (could also be a hw failure, who knows) ... APX mode is useless for your device. So if u can't manage to boot into recovery or in fastboot mode i would recommend you to start the RMA process.

Nope nothing, doesn't matter if I press up/down + power for how long all I get is a 1 second vibrate after 10-12 seconds, with or without the Volume keys.
Pad is charged, same with A/C, when I try without the LED next to the power doesn't even turn on
Pressing the reset with a paperclip won't work either as stated so I guess it really is a brick...
How can a official Firmware Upgrade brick a device? I'm not new to Android and already own 3 HTC's all rooted and stuff but I never came across something like this ..
A few Things you can still try to recover the Infinty
Dude, that absolutely SUCKS! I would be so disappointed / angry if I were in your position, especially having the tablet for a short time. It DOES sound like a hardware failure (video seems out, but it's almost as if the tablet is running dark, and you just have no video. Can you return it to the retailer you bought it from? That would be 1000% better than an RMA, which is another thing that Asus does extremely poorly (They use a 3rd Part servive out of Grapevine Texas, and in MOST cases it is a nightmare. I don't understand why you can't bring/send it back to the point of purchase. You are not requesting arefund, just exchange for defective tblet.
As a last resort, do this: RUN THE BATTERY FULLY DOWN. Do not put the charge on, and keep checking if the tablet is powered on (touch the power button quickly, like you are taking it out of sleep mode. This could take the better part of a full day/night, but if you run it until the battery fully discharges, I remember a Prime user that this saved the day. It certainly is worth the effort, considering the alternatives.
Once it fully runs down, plug in the charger, and it should power up / begin charging and you will know in two seconds if it worked cause that Asus Logo will be the greatest site you will have seen in some time.
Oh, and something you can try before beginning that long process: I know you have already tried most reset methods, but humor me and put a pin in the reset hole - by HDMI, but instead of just pressing it briefly, press and hold for a FULL 30 + seconds. Some swear this changes the parameters, thiugh I am doubrtfull. More significant was mention that while holding the microswitch in, there is a "draining" happening of the memory onboard. I half belive it because years ago, I had an old HP Jornada Pocket PC, and one of the recovery procedures was remove the backup battery, and wait some inutes for a drain of memory to occur. You could SEE the LCD fading, like losing contrast super slowly. When it went completely blank was whenI was instructed to re-power up.
So try the reset pinhole for 30+ seconds
failing that, try a full battery drain
failing that try to return to point of sale
failing that do a shudder RMA with Asus. (Reach out to Gary Key - his PM and Email are listed in these forums. That way at least you will have a point of contact, and he may provide you with others. Good luck I feel for ya, especially with JB almost upon us! :cyclops:

Your are not the only one, afaik other users bricked their devices just by updaing with official firmware. However i'm a bit confused about that "shutting down" message and iirc the device only does a "restart" when updating,it doesn't shutdown.
Hi!
Thanks for the long reply
I tried holding the reset for more than 30 seconds, as I thought it did not help.
Any Tipps on how to drain the battery if I can't even turn it on? It vibrates after 10 seconds but I don't think that will drain much of the battery..
As for the RMA:
I won't do it via ASUS, they told me to but hell no.
Bought it from Amazon and already contacted them, I'll send it back when I get the confirmation they won't do an ASUS RMA, if they do want I just get my money back and buy a new one lol. Either way it is faster than Asus..
/edit
I wondered about the shutdown too and even waited quite some time after it went black because I thought it would boot back again, but well.. it did not
Thanks again!

I will try to find the thread - but check in the Prime threads - search for screen black, no video etc. The guy(s) that did it said that they just kept turning it on.. or touching the power switch - I know that's not too detailed. Here's the thing: a vibrate is what the tablet does NORMALLY when powering up... I think your may be running, you just can't see it. The only clues you can get are from the LED in the power button. Green means something like 95% charged. Amber means less that 14% and blinking amber (with no power supply attached means it is within the last few percent - Those are ballpark figures, you can find the full LED color descriptions with a bit of searching. Anyway it is you only indicator so, finding out waht the colors mean might help you in the discharging process.

EDIT: JUST NOTICED you said this is from Amazon. If that's the case, you have no worries. Amazon replaces items faster/better than any other retailer. In fact Amazon will cross ship you a new one and you can return this after receiving the new one - at least that's how they did it with my TF101... two times. On the third exchange, they try to refund you and make you purchase it again, but I complained that it was not the SAME problem each time (this was on the docks) and they went ahead and sent me a 3rd one. Just go ahead and do that. You probably would be better off with a different one, but check it CAREFULLY for defects. I am convinced that these are near impossible for Asus to build without screwing up something - Screen separation (viewed from the edge), scratches, poor cutout/application of the Logo (My daughter actually bled from a cut it gave he -sharp edges) and the INFAMOUS Loose Screen, "Clicking" sound - squeeze the tablet gently all the way around. if it clicks or makes any grinding noises return it. For $500 any defect is unacceptable. Good luck!
Good idea. I also wondered about his state of charge while updating...

Thing is, even when it vibrates the LED is always off, only when I plug it in for charging it turns orange.
I will try the APX method Just plug it in to the PC and when the "can't find driver" message pops up it's in APX? Or do I have to install the drivers first?

You don't need the PC at all, just put it in APX mode and let it be. The led turns on only when you plug the charger.
Edit: btw, you will know if it's in APX mode because even if the screen is off the device will get warm.

Maybe that is why they pushed the release back. Because they found it was bricking devices, lol. That sucks, tho, man. Good thing you bought it recently enough to send it back with Amazon. I wouldn't even bother with anything else and just sent it back.
Maybe....you could see what's going on if you connected it to the TV/Monitor on the HDMI port....
Soo I'm back!
It is still vibrating, so the battery is not empty yet ;(
I thought about the HDMI too but I don't have a mini-HDMI adapter.
Anyway it is Saturday and I might send it back today ... although I am usually not giving up till I fix something I guess their might be nothing else left.
Thanks so much for your support so far

Ok another trick and it involves some luck. IF its on and you power it off you get a very, very short vibration (it's hard to feel it sometimes) and then you normally see a confirmation box appear in the middle of the screen asking you "Would you like to shut down?". Then you either tap Cancel or OK. Using your "minds eye" try to imagine where that box is on that black screen and tap it where you would to answer the question "OK". If you have any luck the damn thing will shut off and in ~8 seconds you'll feel a longer vibration indicating it turned off. Then DO NOT turn it on. Instead plug in the power adapter and let it power on and see if that puts your video back up.
I'm just wondering if the cable to the screen inside has popped off the main board. I know i've read about that happening but it usually occurs after a pretty good jolt to the unit.

[Q] NEED HELP! Screwed up ODIN root procedure, and GS3 is lifeless

Just got the Verizon GS3 from my employer; and, decided to root it.
It received the JB 4.1.1. OTA yesterday, after being activated; and, I tried to use the XDA posted procedure for rooting that new build:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439
Did all the prep, got ODIN and VRALEC bootchain loading, until ODIN showed green.
While waiting for the GS3 to reboot, I knocked the USB cable out of my laptop.
Couldn't get ODIN to continue, and the GS3 won't boot at all...100% black screen.
The only kind of response I get is when I connect the GS3 to the USB cable, and hold down the power button. After about 20 seconds, the computer will make soft pinging noises.
I've rooted a lot of Android phones. Had lots of problems, but never actually bricked one...especially one belonging to the company.
Have a completely bricked this poor phone; or does someone have a plan to offer?
THANKS, IN ADVANCE!
PJ Arts
Have you pulled battery let it sit for a little then put the battery in and tried getting back into Odin mode? Of course without the usb connected

Appreciate the suggestion, Kintwofan.
Unfortunately, I had already tried that...took the battery out; and, let the phone sit for 10 minutes.
There is absolutely nothing when I hold down the Power button...no sound, no lights, no haptic buzz.
The only time it gives any sign of life is if I plug in the USB cable, while the battery is out. Then the upper-left LED glows red...even when I put the battery back in. However, after about 1 minute, the light goes out, and the GS3 will give out three short 'chirps'
Any other thoughts? Have I killed it?

I'm thinking so, that's the same symptoms as when people flash international versions of a ROM.

Had this before it's a soft brick,I think. you need to get into Odin mode and flash bootloader again, there's a thread in dev section with the files and the procedure

You know a USB jig may actually be helpful in your situation. I think they're like 10 in eBay

I've knocked my chord out from flashing so many times on the fascinate. Good lord. Plus it would even turn it blue mid way and get all messed up.
I simply put it back in download mode and flashed away. OP has not specified trying to get into download mode. Try that.....

You may be right, I told him to a while ago, but re reading his response it sounds like he just tried to power it back on.

Same for the droid x. Just put it back in bootloader mode and start the sbf over. The only real problem was if your battery was too low and your would have to find an external charger. That sucked and people would freak out.

If you are able to get in to download mode consider installing the pre rooted K3 found here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984436
I have 4 phones, I used OTA Rootkeeper on one, used the method above on two and the fourth is still on ICS, until this weekend.
I hope all works out well for you.
Unplug the usb from the phone. Hold Home+ Vol Down+ Power at same time, When it boots, then Vol. Up.
This is called Download mode. It WILL go into download mode if it shows a battery icon when plugged in.,
Then, open odin, plug the usb into the phone & continue on.
Just trying to power on from a soft brick will do nothing. It sounds like that is what you are doing.
Appreciate all the feedback.
I charged the battery in an external charger; and, tried to get back into ODIN mode.
I held the lower volume and home buttons down, then held the power button.
Nothing happened at all.
If I did it wrong, please explain how I should do it.
As always, thanks in advance!

Did the phone even vibrate? Instead of holding them down at the same time, do it in a sequence. Volume down, home button, power button. Hold each one down while you hold the next button down.

Try this:
Make sure battery is charged. Hold down: volume down, home, and power buttons. THEN insert battery.

,
Battery fully charged, and did the exact sequences described in the two most recent posts. Nothing at all... no vibrations, no lights, no sounds.

Sorry I didn't make it clearer. There was NOTHING on the screen at all.
What happened was if I plugged in the USB while the battery was out, a red LED came on (top left of the front of the device).
Whether I put the battery back in, or not, the red LED would turn off after about 30 seconds; and, the phone would give 3 soft 'chirps'.
The red LED doesn't go on, if the battery is in; and, there has been no other light, and there has been absolutely nothing on the screen.
Thanks!

This exact same thing happened to me when flashing (except I didn't knock the cord out). I tried all of the solutions found on these forms, and I even ordered a USB jig and nothing would work. I had the same thing happen with the red light coming on, wouldn't power on, tried the battery, holding the button combinations, etc.-still a no go. I finally gave up and had to ask for a replacement device unfortunately. I have an unopened USB jig from MobileTechVideos (I had ordered one from them and one from eBay) if you'd like to give it a shot with your device anyway.
just saw this on phandroid

maybe you can say that you think you have had a bad mother board samsung is replacing them with new devices it worth a shot...it not honest but if you want a new device it worth a shot...:fingers-crossed:

I appreciate the suggestion. However, it was company property; and, I made the choice to screw around with it. As such, it is my responsibility; and, I won't scam Verizon or my employers to do some undeserved CYA.
MindArchr...thanks for the offer. Its very decent of you to do so; but, I have already arranged to make restitution for the device that I bricked; and, my company has ordered me another one.
The very best of luck and a very Happy Holiday, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and all that stuff to all of you!

Nothing. Happens it don't light up or power on at all. It is not reconized on computer either. It's hard bricked.
Make sure the Battery is charging...
How can I make sure the battery is charging when no lights come on at all? All I do know is I had it plugged in for a while yesterday and it got really warm. But no lights whatsoever. The screen doesn't light up at all neither does the led.
??????
There are no notification lights on the D720, but when you plug it in with a charger, you should see a battery bar on the display.
Other than that, you are probably right about hard-brick.
I, luckily, never had a "brick" on the Nexus S, so someone else with experience may wanna chime in. But Google and YouTube are your friends.
Sorry...

Please help me, i have the same problem
been awhile since any action here. saved mine with JIG method once but this time it won't work ??!(why) , in search of a solution again! -> hardbrick #2 on this device!
You guys can try a USB Jig. If that does not help, I think JTAG is what you need.
Jesus... just to revive this thread (and this concept of hard bricking), I think I just accidentally bricked mine as well.
Here's exactly what I did:
One moment, it was working spectacularly - fully stock, but unlocked. I had just listed it on eBay, too.
So I ran a factory reset on it (from the Settings menu), also "erase USB storage".
Then, after it shut down for the reboot, I pulled the battery.
...
That was it. Now it doesn't turn on for anything whatsoever. No device detected on USB when plugged into PC. Remove, replace battery, hold VolUp+Power, nothing. Plug into power adapter, nothing. Nothing at all.
But the back does get lukewarm after a minute or so, as if it's alive in the head but frozen, unable to start the bootloader.
WTF? I also have 2 more of these Nexus S 4G's, and both of them seem to have Flash storage chips that exhibit the same behavior when their chips are placed in (this) working motherboard. They can't boot. When I try to "hot-flash" it by booting the bootloader then swapping the Flash chips, they can't flash anything (this is probably to be expected). So, if I can get my ONCE-WORKING phone back to life, there's a good chance I can get another working as well (one just has a cracked glass, otherwise working mainboard & peripherals).
It's old, yes, but it's a damn shame to E-waste these things for a stupid software problem like this!
