[Q] GPS? - T-Mobile Sidekick 4G

How is the GPS on the Sidekick? My Vibrant is on it's last leg and I'm debating between a sidekick and the G2. Did Samsung fix the GPS issue that the Vibrant had with the Sidekick or is it still garbage?

i wanted to do the same with my old 3g...but too bad the thing completely crapped out when i updated to ios 4.0. My silent switch hasn't worked for over a year, the sleep button hasnt worked for a few months now, and then the 4.0 update broke wifi and gps somehow.

Why? What's wrong with the iPhone. I have one and I like it. I prefer my Captivate but, from a functionallity standpoint, there's very little difference between my iPhone and my Captivate.
Just becasue I think the Android OS is better, I prefer the display on my Captivate, and it's faster doesn't make my iPhone a bad smart phone.

I used it to hold my cappy, so I don't put any scratches on my baby but im glad i finally sold my iphone. except i do miss it...

ATT is a big jerk. They keep adding the 2gb data plan by default. I have to call them every month and cancel it.

I don't understand this thread, the iphone 3g/3gs has horrible gps. The captivate is quirky but our performs my iphone any day. unless you men an iphone4
I have actually seen the iphone show me on the wrong side of the hudson river. My aunt had a 3g as well, same thing. Tom tom had to build a car dock with a gps system to get reliable navigation on the iphone.
My captivate works on my passenger seet my iphone barely works if I stick it out the window. Trusting my iphone for nav has made me late to a job interview losing its lock at the most in opportune times.
I think there is a big placebo effect with the captivate, the gps isn't that bad. With jf6 it worked about like my iphone, poor performance without a clear view of the sky but tracked fine if it could get a lock. If anything that's a step up from the iphones I used.
Jf7 could lock in all sorts of situations but wouldn't track, ji6 leak would lock and track but it had a bug where the gps would turn off after 6 minutes if I set it to ms based. Jj4 was flawless but occasionally slow to lock because it would get new gps data every once in a while. Each rom has its quirk but its always been better than my iphone, though never as good as my friends incredible.

its not just my iphone. if it was then why did tom tom make such an elaborate dock with a better gps antenna and expect it to sell for $100+
im not the only one that had mediocre to poor iphone gps. my aunt had a 3g and a 3gs after her 3g got stolen and neither one was great.
maybe im the only one with a woring gps on the captivate. i dunno.

[Q] Yeah, but does the GPS work?

The biggest complaint most people have with their Galaxy S phone is that the GPS sucks. Has this changed for the Nexus S?
Is the phone actually out yet?
the GPS chip was switched out in the recent FCC filings so safe to say it's a working chip lol
It was a change of antennas, not a change of chip
The problem on SGS was the too little antenna.
a pair of new Bluetooth / WiFi and GPS antennas. Should work. Google erred with specs assembly. I dont think they will with quality and usability.
We have to wait for the first review :d But I don't think Google will release a phone with their name on with a faulty GPS and navigation. They kept on mentioning how good is the navigation on the NS. I am sure they tested it.
I am sure the GPS would be fine and works, because they must use this Nexus S to test the upcoming Google Maps 5!
Either way, the latest leaks for Vibrant completely fix the GPS on mine.

No. December 16th
I dunno why the gps is dwelled on so much, because the magnetic compass is a bigger fail, as it has not worked in 3 Vibrants that I have seen. I like Google Skymap, but it is an epic fail on vibrant.

(Q) Nexus S Gps

So...I currently own a vibrant and want to pick up a nexus s mainly because I'll be guaranteed android upgrades. My main concern is if the nexus s utilizes the same gps chip as the other galaxy s phones. If it does, it is an epic fail because gps accuracy is still HORRID on these phones and would be a total dealbreaker.
Anyone know the answer?

The Nexus S has an improved antenna.
But even then the GPS issues on the Galaxy S series were mostly software ones since they've now been patched between the update, and the app ont he market to reset the gps settings.

But that mostly means that there is still a hardware issue and that means the difference between driving on the road and driving perpendicular to it.

REQUEST
Those who already have their phone: please make a GPS test as it follows:
choose a location outside which you can easily identify on google earth (a tree, a big rock, something small but visible on satellite view)
go out there and use an app which shows GPS coordinates - preferably the free app GPS test
stand next to object and get the coordinates, write it down, etc (for this wait a while till more precise fix)
go back to house, type the coordinates into Google Earth
measure the distance between the location you got with your phone and the real object using Google Earths measuring tool
post the results here
Well, I'm not gonna do all that, but maybe this will help.
I did a cold start on Maps. Got a lock on within 10 seconds. Pretty damn good. Now I'm using GPS Test app and was able to lock on all satellites. 7 out of 7. This is all within my house. Wifi is off.
I can happily say that GPS works fine. From my experience anyways.
Yup GPS is fine locked faster and seems more accurate than my vibrant

It was either Endgadget or gizmodo, but they said the GPS still sucks on the nexus s that it took forever for them to get a lock. I was tired of playing with ROM's etc, which is why I sold my vibrant and got a mytouch4g. I do miss the vibrant, but I geocache and a accurate GPS is something I needed.

load of BS. took less than 0.5 sec to get a lock and the accuracy is incredible.

They also said they were driving while trying to get a lock... And in my experience (Nexus S, TomTom, Garmin), a GPS can't get a lock while you're moving. Maybe the best ones can, but their test is not enough to say that Nexus S sucks.
I feel that I have a bad GPS. It's. Not seeing more than 2 satellite outdoor. I will test it more

Those that say that the GPS issues of the Galaxy S line of phones were fixed via the software update and market app probably don't own a Galaxy S phone. The GPS is definitely not fixed. In fact, it's the only reason why I'm in this forum. I'm willing to give up AT&T 3G for a working GPS -- I plan to sell my Captivate and buy a Nexus S if the GPS works.
Also, those that say they got a fast lock and great accuracy, that doesn't exactly mean anything yet. Most Galaxy S users had great GPS performance out-the-box, and after a hard reset. But the performance gradually degrades over the course of a few days, and then you eventually want to throw your phone out the window. So the fact that only some Nexus S owners have great GPS performance -- and not ALL -- leaves me discouraged. But we should have a better assessment after a few days.
Maybe Samsung and/or Google also released in market the pieces that they have produced, before changing the GPS antenna....
Maybe that's why some users have GPS issues and others not...
So maybe we have 2 deferent produced devices....
Nice scenario don't you think???

I hear ya on the GPS. Was holding out for the stock 2.2 update to see if there was any marked improvement, and, though it might be a tad better, it's not where it should have been in the first place: still pretty much worthless as far as I'm concerned.
I've heard the inspire is like night and day better, as the comment above me confirms.
I'm getting ready to make the jump, personally.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
Suffice it to say the inspire 4g does not have poorly implimented GPS hardware, and therefore does not need tons of software tweaks to get it to work, nor does it need 12 sats to get a 5 meter accuracy..
Galaxy S phones have dead GPS. Period.
If you have a Captivate get a rom based on either XXJPY or WJS3/5 -- Those have the best GPS i've found.
For stock experience, use Cog 4 with UCKB1 + adamholden85's GPS fix.
Even on a good day though, its not even close to the inspire..
Much better than the captivate, even on one of its better days, but not as quick to lock as my incredible. Overall the gps does what I expect of a phone. Navigation works well, quick to locate in maps, update location for weather, etc.
I quote Ferris Bueller:
"If you have the means, I highly recommend it. It's so choice."
I was driving 45 mph, had passenger press the lock button on maps... had a 10m lock in about 10 seconds. Tracks perfectly around turns and everything. That and this phone is just awesome. HTC FTW.
Mine is coming in tomorrow...I am coming from the captivate side as well.
GPS on the captivate was a hit or miss. Various roms would get it to work sometimes but its all in the hardware.
I am glad to hear that the inspire has a great GPS.
I originally had a bad antenna which I swapped out at the store and honestly this phone is QUICK! It's funny how used to my old phone I became about certain functions like the GPS and tracking.. Loving my Inspire.

For all those GPS fans out there, it works great out of the box, but some have had problems once reflashing with even stock rom, so be careful.

I was unreachable for calls and the GPS wouldn't pinpoint my location accurately. We did a number of tests in store and called TS. Also I was stock at the time no question it was the phone and not a hack or rooting issue.

What's the best app out there for navigation? Google Nav isn't great. I got navigon and it's not too bad, on my iPhone it was the best out there, so I'm assuming it's the same with Android?

Infuse or iPhone 4

so im really debating on this.
Infuse or iPhone 4?
im kind of stuck in the middle...
my main issue with this is the GPS...
and IOS seems to be more composed...
what do you all think?
I got the infuse coming from 3GS, my plan was if the infuse did not work out go to the iphone 4.
But everything is looking good for me on the infuse. If the next iphone does have a bigger screen i will switch to it right away. iOS is just too smooth to compare.
I really really love android...
but iOS is more composed...
i just idk i got to 8 pm to decide.
android is more hackaable you know...
im right in the middle.
did you swap the infuse out yet? i can tell you some new gps settings to try as well. you need to get into lbs test mode though. you dont need root for this so it wont void anything.

I have owned both, I prefer the infuse.
I had the iPhone 4 for almost a month...it was nice, but very limited unless jailbroken. I switched to Android and didn't look back! I got the Infuse today and I don't seem to have gps issues. It doesn't connect instantly but it's pretty damn close to my position even though I'm inside my house.
I am also an iphone convert...iphone is a great platform with its own perks. But i prefer android, there is alot more options for customizing and functionality, however my personal experience has been that android is a bit more buggy than ios. Of course with a few tweeks here and there android can be fixed right up....ios just works.
There is also the issue of software updates, not all android devices get software updates, when apple rolls out an update everyone gets it. Its really an issue of personal preference. To me the androids pros outweigh the cons
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA Premium App
yeah im going to go switch out my Infuse for a new one.

I've been playing around lbs test and some good settings would be very useful. Does anybody have a link to what's best, or one of the people who say they get a 10m lock in seconds want to share their settings?
I am also coming from a 3GS. There is definitely more tweaking to get stuff the way you want. I wouldn't downplay the customizability of the iPhone after you jailbreak though. I also still have found good substitutes for tlert and intelliscreen. Over all I like the phone, and I think the 4g is worth it, although if I wasn't on xda and competent with technology I wouldn't recommend it.
