Fail-proof: 4G + Root + Wifi Tether = everyone happy

hello everyone,
I have done enough flashing and reading for the past 4 days. I can now provide you guys with a 100% fail-proof method for getting 4G + Root + Wifi Tether:
1. Flash it back to RUU .1
http://rapidshare.com/files/389983490/RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253.exe
2. Do the automatic OTA update from Sprint to get you to .6 (make sure it is 1.32.651.6 otherwise do not confirm)
3. From your phone, open up internet browser and go to www.unrevoked.com and get yourself rooted
4. From your phone, go to http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_2-pre14.apk&can=2&q= and install the wifi tether application
5. Reboot the phone
6. Update the Profile by going to settings/system update/update profile
7. Reboot the phone
8. Open up your wifi tether application and enjoy!
This is a guaranteed 100% will work with 4G. If it does not work for you, please let me know and I'll do my best to help. Stay tune. I will update this thread after tinkering with toast method, flip, flip ota update, newest radio, wifi tether.

anyone confirm this? Says my phone is rooted then I have an app requesting super user access.
Aite folks I can confirm this is bull****.

I can confirm. I have been waiting for full root for a while but in the meantime this works great. I get root access and am able to get 4G (Chicago) and also wifi tether works great, even when it is in 4G.

While this method works, it also locks us out of a custom recovery, which for me is the biggest reason I root.

Why do you need a custom recovery when you cant even change the ROM with this Root.

That's why i said this is great until the NAND is unlocked so we can change system files while in Android.

Is this is something that will be done? My phone was updated on 6/4/2010 by the bestbuy A$$hole that pulled it out of the box. I have done this root method because I wanted wifi tether. (works great) Im not looking for a new ROM but only to remove the sprint bloatware that is on my phone.

Because it allows you to make android backups, and flash different roms as well as being able to remove apps you don't want, which this rooting method doesn't do.

!It Works!
I used it for about 2 hours at a library.
Step 1. Get Evo and do the update
Step 2. Install unrevoked.

Step 3. Install Wireless Tether for Root Users 2.0.2

Step 4. Enjoy Wireless tethering.
**I only rebooted after step 1**

If all you want is root access for your apps and wifi tether then sure, go ahead.
I am rooted with toast's root process and I can wifi-tether via 4G as well as flash ROMs, make nandroid backups, and edit/remove/add system files.
Nothing against Unrevoked or the OP but I just don't want people to think that doing the method in this thread is the only way to get 4G.

well its true that there are more ways to get 4g but the problem is that all the other root methods are pretty much strewn about over the forums (we currently dont have anything to have a unified way to find roms) second NOT every rom is officially working correctly some users are not having 4g working with toats method some user do have 4g working theres no app thats 1000 percent confirmed to working perfectly right now, probably by next we we will have something tested and fully rooted with no large deficiencies. so anyway right now there are no fully configured roms, as such there no real point to root toasts way, besides right now you can downgrade easily and still root toasts way once other roms show up... so right now this is an easy way to root and if all you need is wireless tether then its perfect.
i find it funny that other devs who have made root come on to threads like this and scare people into thinking this is an inferior root, it IS NOT. some people dont care to remove all sorts of stuff some people just want to be able to wireless tether....

Inferior as defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary -- 2 a : of low or lower degree or rank b : of poor quality : mediocre
I believe when you have 2 Root's and 1 gives you more options, the one of lower degree or rank is an Inferior Root.
This is just like with the iPhone (which I just moved over from). Sure blackra1n did the job but it also was fast and dirty, didn't give people the ability to stop baseband updates and didn't give them the ability to adjust the partition sizes.
Which is what that one does by blocking custom restore options.
Honestly it took me a whole hour to go back from .6 to .1 then to flash the root, then to flash the custom rom, and flash the 4g radio and install the apk for wireless tethering. If you can't spare the 1 hour to do it right, well then I am sure they won't want to hear about it later when you lose your root.

This is true to a point. There are still some folks that are not able to wifi tether. However, quite a few have flashed the newer radio and had success. I'm still not 100% sure the 4G issue is ROM related.

Believe me, there are no devs trying to scare people into using their root method.
Don't get me wrong, I applaud the fact that the OP of this thread is trying to help the community!

Worked for me. Until more research and development is done on the EVO all I want is the wireless tether. this worked great for me. Thanks!!

I agree with you freelancerx. I tried Toasts way at first and i could not get past the recover part the .bat file never opend my phone. I tried updateing the dirvers, installing htc sync, and did the sdk stuff and still noting. i did want to flash roms but i also wanted tether but i wanted to keep my sprint stiff for now. the unevoroked method is a great way of getting root access if you are looking for a way to use wifi and still have working 4g and not have to use the command promt to do everyting.

For those who have successfully done this, how in the world do you get around the whole Ad-Hoc Network connection thing. I rooted my phone by unrevoked and installed the Android-Wifi-Tether program. I've activated the program and it's sending out a signal. I then use my Windows Vista comp. to locate it and it shows my phone as an "Ad-Hoc Network" when I connect to it, it says your computer is not configured for this. I'm not sure now what I should do, is there a problem with my EVO, or this something I need to do with the computer.

I haven't seen a thread about this, and it looks like this method is fairly fresh. I figured I'd give it a try...and it doesn't seem to work.
It gets hung up on the "flashing recovery image" part.

You have to remove HTC Sync AND the drivers that come with it. When I first tried this, I just installed the USB drivers that unrEVOked came. Looks like you have to totally removed anything from HTC before this can work.
And yes, it does work.

Same thing happens to me.
I have the latest software from Sprint. I don't know if this not working has anything to do with me trying to run unrevoked2 previously.

Not sure...I would uninstall any software from Sprint and HTC before you run this.

After seeing their one patch potentially ruin people's 4G for good, I've decided not to try their methods anymore. Hopefully 3.0 helps some people.
I like the Simple Root method and Whitslack's method.

So it seems like it doesn't wipe your data... anyone tried this and can confirm?

I just want to clarify that unrEVOked is not responsible for that. There was a problem with the OTA update itself that broke 4G for some people, which HTC is and was responsible for. The only thing unrEVOked did was distribute said OTA update in pre-rooted form.

So after you run this, will it be possible to unlock nand protection to achieve a full root?

Ah ok uninstalling HTC Sync and its driver did the trick. I'm now rooted for the first time! w00t!

That's 100% not true. The borking of the 4g was due to the way that the unrEVOked method wrote the wimax image to the wimax partition. This wasn't unique to the unrEVOked method, but it was something that should likely have been tested before release.

No, it doesn't wipe ANY of your data. After I performed it, all of my apps and files were still 100% intact.

I believe it does. My software version didn't change afterwards.
To be frank, I'm not really sure how exactly this works. I know it changes your recovery, but other than that...I have no clue.
Still, it's a way of a achieving root that I'm fairly confident most users can pull off.
Remember: YOU MUST REMOVE HTC SYNC, AND ANY HTC/SPRINT DRIVERS
Otherwise...it gets hung up during the process.

Make sure you uninstall HTC Sync AND HTC Drivers... if you have Windows 7, just search, from the launcher thing, "htc un--" and it'll fill in the rest.
Edit: Trying it for the second time, it gets stuck at "Waiting for device..." and it's connected.
Edit 2: DON'T uninstall the extra htc drivers... I don't know, but it's not recognizing my phone now, zzz.

On their site they say: unrevoked3 will replace the stock Android recovery with a custom one, which adds many features including “nandroid” backups, the ability to use custom ROMs, and a greater amount of flexibility and customization of your Android phone.
So I'm guessing I could finally try out some of those ROM's I seeing floating around here. All I'm really after is a fully functional version of Froyo for the Evo, but I'm not sure if that's out yet...

Nothing working 100% yet, but DamageControl & Cyanogen are the two closest i think ( hope to see a 100%-working FroYo within the next few days ).

This tool works on Windows, Mac and Linux for all released versions of the EVO Android system. When you run it, it permanently unlocks NAND and turns off security, installs clockworkmod (or another recovery of your choice) and installs the su/superuser.apk tools.
It requires no additional ROM downloads, doesn't wipe your data (like the current method that uses unrevoked forever + unrevoked 3.1 to downgrade) and keeps your PRI at 1.40
Bonus: it's one-click.

i would've volunteered but i just did the whole downgrading upgrading method two hours ago! frustrating is all i can say but i'm done. now i just have to find a ROM.

I have an incredible myself and can't wait for this method to be official. but i've come across a different project. my buddy saw my customized incredible and wants me to root his EVO. he wants it more for the wifi tethering. but he currently uppdated to 2.2. i know there are several methods to root after the 2.2 update but my question is: how do we remove root just in case he needs to take the phone to sprint for service? thats the only reason thats holding me back from rooting his phone. i want to be able to have everything lined up for him in case a situation comes up and needs to return the phone. if there is a root and unroot process for 2.2 then i wouldn't mind testing. any input is greatly appreciated.

But does it unlock NAND?

If it's a pretty tried and true method, I might be willing to try it out on my dads unrooted EVO via the mac program. I understand it IS a testing request, but you sound pretty confident in your work.

Yes, it unlocks nand if you disable security on the device (which this does by default).

Just completed root/s-off on a white evo 4g with stock 2.2 from the store today. Took five minutes. Thanks for all the hard work!

I'm trying to root today, and didn't know this was available to try... I'm a total noob at this, FYI.
Gonna ask here, seeing as I think it might be the best place... will this allow for the current framerate cap to be removed? That's kind of my entire purpose for looking at rooting my phone, I find everything else is 100% fine for my needs and uses.
I'm always seeing problems that people have after rooting... like losing the WiMax radio, GPS crashing their phone, things missing, this and that not working...
I just don't feel that framerate cap to be THAT big of a deal for me to go and sacrifice two or three things I use regularly over that one slightly minor thing...

The act of rooting doesn't take away those features. It's the ROM that you flash that affects how the phone operates. I do believe there a couple ROMs available, that you can find in the Dev section, that fix the fps. I personally love CM6 with the Snap 7.5 kernel.

more so it's the kernels that fix the fps isnt it.

Yea.... all I want is the FPS fixed. I don't really want all the extras that are thrown in with these rom's around... that and ability to install things like the wireless tether app.

I would like to be a tester using my cousin evo

I too would be willing to test on a 2.2 evo.

I have a Evo 4g with 2.2, Whats the best/easiest way to root?

I've just recently registered but have been lurking for a while and doing a lot of reading. I've seen there are a bunch of different options for rooting a evo. Also seems like there's a lot of out dated ways to root as well. I'm still new to this and have some questions. Looking to have full root access. As far as I understand it, I will need to run a rom after rooting the device? Will I still be able to receive sprint updates as need once I root? My main reasons for rooting is for the wifi teether, maybe overclocking to speed it up a little bit and to remove the factory sprint apps. I did have a friend tell me that once his buddy rooted his evo he noticed his battery life was a lot better. Anyone experience that? What other info do I need to provide you? Thanks
Update: Was running 2.2 froyo till my phone just did the 2.3 gingerbread update and now my internet doesn't work. Is there any way to root now or am I screwed and have to deal with sprint?

You don't need to flash a rom after rooting but you definitely can. As far as updating, I'm not 100% sure about sprint, but I think you need to be stock to receive an OTA update. For rooting your device, use unrevoked, its an incredibly simple one click root program.

Unrevoked is the quick and easy way to root. Once rooted you WILL NOT get Sprint updates. If you get your 2.3 Sprint update and apply it you WON'T be able to root.
You can run stock 2.2 Android with Sense rooted and not load any ROMs. I do not know if you'll be able to wifi tether by only being rooted. I do know that there are several ROMs that have Android 2.3 Gingerbread and have wifi tether working so if you do root your 2.2 install Amon_Ra recovery then flash Cyanogen Mod 7. Instructions are on his Wiki which I can't post a link to since I'm new forum user here.

Should I even worry about the OTA updates then?

[Q] Most stable ROM at the moment?

Long story short, I run an android rooting business off craigslist, and a client wants me to root his Infuse.
He wants Gingerbread and WiFi tethering.
I can see we don't have any Gingerbread ROMs out yet, and that's just fine.
My main question is, which Roms support wifi tether and which one is the most stable?

Do you donate half of what you make to devs?

AFAIK they all support the tether feature.
Of course if I'm wrong you can just have your customer use Barnacle Wi-Fi tether once you root their Phone.
Personally I use Bionix and I love it. No issues at all.

its not complicated... and u can unlock Original wifi and usb tether, no extra programs needed. all u need is to have phone rooted, then download titanium backup and look for a program with titanium called "tetheringmanager" then eith backup then uninstall, just uninstall or just freeze. works like charm, i use this technique for my infuse and my old samsung captivate

For Wi-fi tethering,
You can do 1 of 2 things
1)Root the phone and buy an app called SystemApp Freezer ($1). Then Freeze tetheringmanager
2) Root the phone and flash any of the 3 Rom's in circulation. They all support Wifi tethering. I'm on Infused 1.5 and Wi fi tethering works flawlessly.

titanium backup does that for free

infused is probably the most popular. if done through rom manager you have the option for aosp lock screen. infused runs touchwiz launcher but gb launcher is also installed. it also supports touch wiz 4 if that is desired. the other roms are going for a more aosp look and have gingerbread launcher.
the standard way to root this phone is superoneclick from clshort fuse. but like others are saying, if you are profiting off this you should probably donate, especially to clshortfuse and to the original developer of rageagainstthecage.
the phone is not nand locked, recovery is signature verified and needs to be modded before flashing cwm.
alternatively you can just use odin (thank you samsung) and flash one of the voodoo enabled kernels achieving root and getting red cwm in the process. i really recommend the community kernel.

I didn't know about freezing tetheringmanager, I'm thinking I won't even need to flash a custom ROM for him now. Of course, if I do I will donate (I already have to members of the MT3GS and G1 community) because if it weren't for the awesome devs, I wouldn't even be profiting.

I'm kind of torn. It does seem wrong to me as well, but I also feel that if you are too lazy to learn to do this yourself, then you should have to pay.

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i think you kinda have this backwards. you MUST have rom manager/cwm installed before you can flash a rom.

ROM Manager is optional. CWM is a must.

What I'm asking is if I install the Voodoo community kernel on an unrooted phone, will it root it for me, allowing me to use Rom Manager to flash roms?

You are only required to have Rom Manger and or clockwork recovery IF you want to flash a rom using zipfile roms. There are many roms which we flash using ODIN and ODIN does not work with zipfiles, it only works with *.TAR files.
I have flashed both ways.. I happen to like the Odin rom flashing with TAR files a lot better because so far I have never had any problems using Odin.
However using zipfile roms with clockwork recovery do many times cause errors and other problems.
Main thing is that when flashing roms you MUST be 100% sure that the rom you are flashing is 100% compatible with your brand/model of phone.

no. you have it backwards. again. root first. then install roms.
