hey there,
right now i am using a bravo phone which has s-off
i am looking forward to buy an nexus s
question: will there be in future the s-off feature to customize mtd partitions for custom roms?
thx
You must have overlooked all the sticky threads.
the nexus is an op phone ..s-off not needed .. No encrypted bootloaders . etc etc
custom roms can run without doing a lot of risky work
i know , i allready got that
i just want to resize my partition table
less space for the system, less cache and most of it for internal storage
is that possible with the nexus s?
so i gues no one resized the internal storage to get more space for apps or is it just not possible?
Don't know if it is possible, but you have app2sd on the phone and for example with cyanogenmod, you can set it to install apps to sd by default.
i know but normally if the dlavik cache and data cache is on the internal storage its faster isnt it?
on my bravo desire its that way...
On your bravo, the sd card is a physical sd card in a physical sd card slot. On the nexus s there is only ONE physical flash chip. The sd partition is just a part of that single chip.
ah ok, thx for that info
so there wont be any storage space problems anymore..

Hi all,
I've been searching through the forums and didn't quite find an answer, so sorry if this has been explained before.
I'm currently running an HTC Desire with stock Froyo (i.e. not rooted). Also, my knowledge of rooting and all its benefits is rather slim, so please bare with me. As some of you might know, the internal space on the Desire is rather on the low side, so I used adb to enable all (well, most) apps to be installable on the SD card (adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2). Now, with this, the apps themselves are moved onto the SD card, but their data and/or cache is still being stored internally. Effectively this means in the long run I still run into the ol' storage space problem.
Now, I read how when rooting a phone you create a partition on the SD card to be handled as if being internal space. Does this mean the above mentioned data/cache/all that jazz that would originally stay in the internal storage when using App2SD with a stock Froyo rom would also go onto the SD card, effectively not using the 'real' internal space at all for apps?
I might have to add, the possibility of a 'real' App2SD might be my highest, if not only motivation to root my phone. So if those two methods (rooted vs. non-rooted App2SD) are basically the same (space saving wise), I might as well disregard that notion.
Thank you in advance.

no they don't work the same
if u root your phone and install Darktremor app2sd it will move to ext partition on sd app+data+cache+dalvik cache
so u will end up with a lot of internal free space
and also from then on all your apps will be instaled to the ext partition
i partitioned my sd card to get more memory for internal storage, but it doesnt show more memory at all, there was only one custom ROM that it actually works on but the ROM crashes alot, i wanna know how to make it work on any ROM because i barely have any internal memory on my Nexus One. can anyone help? i know it probably sounds dumb, but i really need more internal memory, i tried partitioning my sd card times already, it still doesnt work.
I'm not familiar with how it works on your phone, but usually if the rom doesn't have it built-in, you have to flash something to allow moving apps to your ext partition.
You may want to check your device's forum, I'm sure the answer is there somewhere.

To make sure you partitioned your SD Card correctly go HERE at STEP FIVE - Partitioning Your Sd Card With Gparted (it's a htc desire tutorial, but it doesn't matter). Create the fat32 partition and after that create a 1 GB ext4 partition (it should be enough).
Than go HERE where you have a MIUI ROM, it's fast and looks good and it has data 2 ext and it updates regularly, and i suggest installing the MIUI-NX | 1.8.26 | D2EXT | STABLE. Just flash the ROM and that's it.
After this, read everything from the Nexus One Android Development, i noticed that OxygeN ROM also has data2sd, only with it i think you have to flash a script after flashing the OxygeN ROM.
Also before you start don't forget to do a nandroid backup (i would suggest even using ROM Manager to do the backup as it is very simple to copy the backup on your PC)
hey everyone. so if i partition the internal sd card what exactly am i doing? from what i understand, the g2x has 8gb onboard, 1.5 of that is for apps, and 5 goes to user data. the rest i assume is for android?
so if i create a 2gb partition on the internal sd, what am i changing and what does it do to the rest of the space? do i need to create the other partitions in windows later and format them?

Ok, let me try to explain this one...
In three words, Don't Do It!!!
Your internal sd card is pretty much just that, it's a storage card built onto the phone itself. Now it is already partitioned, and allot!
Not only does this one physical card hold your "internal sd card" contents but it also holds your ROM, cache, all your apps, and even your recovery!
Even though it looks like these are separate drives they are all one physical card, your internal sd card.
Now if you try to add to this mix of partitions on this internal card you run the VERY HIGH risk of messing up the lines and sizes of these partitions. Many things in Android assume that some of these are a certain size or at a certain place, and if you mess with it all hell brakes lose!
Now people sometimes partition the external sd card because they want 2 different file types, like half fat32 (like a normal sd card) and half ext4/3 for apps it use in Linux.
Hope this helps!!!

ok, well then i guess my question is more along the lines of why do we have that option in CWM Recovery and if i create a 2gb partition what happens? does it change the default 1.5gb partition so you have more room for apps?

I'm honestly not sure, I've only ever messed with these partitions manually when unbricking my phone. So if you do it, you have a fairly good chance of bricking the phone, but i don't know how Android will react.

thanks, i was just curious, since CWM gives us the option, but ive never done it and until i can find a good reason to i probably won't even mess with it
but it just seems kind of bad having 5gb on the internal card going to waste, i have backups to my external sd, all my data is there too, so i probably won't even touch that 5gb...
Just be glad it's not the other way around
Ill take too much space over not enough any day!

well true, but still would like to know exactly what happens if you choose to run that in CWM Recovery
seek and ye shall find
found a guide for CWM and from what i see that option puts a partition on your external sd card so it can be used to install apps on IF the rom supports that. it says it does wipe everything else off the card though so you need to make a backup. you can also put a swap partition on it as well
looks like it does not touch the internal sd card phone memory which is what i thought it did

I see that our lovely One S's 16Gb sdcard is partitioned that only about 9.98Gb space is usable. Since I dumped the original Sense software on the first day and living on CM10 nightlies since then, is it possible to repartition the sdcard to use more space for apps+data?
Only with S-OFF AFAIK.

That would require s-off. But even then it is not to be taken lightly.
The emmc partition layout is such that you have 10GB as your sdcard and 2.5GB for apps and data. If you install apps to 'sdcard' or 'phone storage', it comes out of the 10GB. If you install to internal storage, it comes out of the 2.5GB. In my experience, that 2.5G for apps is plenty, so always install all apps to internal storage, so as to keep as much as possible of the 10GB for myself.. System partition is 1.7GB so there is not even that much to be gained.
For ppl who dont install crazy amount of app, that 2.5g partition is just a big waste.
id rather use it to store photos and music.
dont know why htc even bothered to make partition like this. its stupid.

So... root the phone and create a new folder in /data/ and/or /system/ and mount it then.
I see that question was yet asked but no reply was given.
Nexus S has 16GB of internal memory splitted in two partitions, one for /system (1GB) and one for /sdcard. (15GB)
My gf has a few app installed (that neither can't move to usb storage) but its internal partition is full. /sdcard partitions is almost empty.
If i'm right, these partitions are not needed anymore since ICS is out (on my galaxy nexus there's no usb storage at all). I wonder if there's a way to merge these two partitions on nexus s with ICS installed.
I read somewhere that these params are hard-coded inside kernel (sounds strange). Did cyanogenmod or any rom changed them to increase internal partition or delete usb storage?
Is there a way to change partitions size in other way?

I Was wondering this as well after going to jellybean 4.3
Im noticing apps like chrome and hangouts are HUGE and cant be moved to USB so the internal storage is rapidly being phased out almost forcing you to upgrade your phone.
I think I read though that the SD storage is actually SD storage physically and the internal is its own physical hardware.... I could be wrong tho.
I was looking for a way to repartition and pretty much this is what I gathered so yes we are screwed. Pretty much ALL non google apps now have to be moved to USB everytime I redo my phone.
and like the usual annoying fate of search results I typed all that out and foudn THIS
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1656794
seems risky tho
Ill just wait for some reviews on the nexus 5
