Wait for 3.1? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I flashed back to stock and started reading up on installing the 3.1 update. If it's out, shouldn't it push to my device in a day or two? I just don't think the risk of a brick that I keep hearing about is really worth trying to update a few days early.

if its the verizon xoom then you should get the update within a day or two but if its a wifi only version then it might be a few weeks for the update to come.

BRD's method stickied in the development forum is pretty damn spot on. I maintained root and SD card compatibility and am now on 3.1 after following the simple 5 or so step guide.

Best way to root

Hey everyone,
Pray tell: what is the easiest way to root my TF and keep existing firmware? I'd like to have the option of flashing new roms and kernels down the road. I keep hearing that rooting takes less than 10 minutes, but the guides I'm seeing require ADB (which requires JDK) and some asus crapware that I just don't want to fill my computer with.
I remember how easy rooting was on the Gtab (upload a new recovery.zip to an SD card and reboot) and I'm hoping that it can be as easy here.
Thanks!
There's two way to root
http://androidroot.mobi/2011/06/13/nvflash-on-asus-transformer/

read up and see what's "easier" for you.
See here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125714
Pure Root 3.1 in Development-section. Extremely easy, did it twice in 2 days on 2 different TF's, 100% succes (guaranteed)
Good Luck
+1
Done one on Thursday and one last Monday. Works perfectly!
Skickat från min ASUS Eee Pad TF101
Ok, I got it. Once all the pre-reqs were in place, it wasn't so bad. Now I just have to uninstall all the garbage that asus loaded onto my pc. Thanks!
Is this root it still valid for Tf with all the latest updates (3.1, 8445 build)?
http://briefmobile.com/root-asus-transformer-on-android-3-1
Please help, I am new to Tf and Android. I can do hackintosh and iOS jailbreak. But this rooting thing is all new to me. It's all very confusing. Why are there so many different out there, e.g., in the developer section of this forum? What is Prime?
Finally, what is the downside of rooting? Some seemed to suggest you may not getting a dock firmware update, or app missing from market? What happens with the next android update if rooted?
Sorry for all the questions, I couldn't find a nice intro guide on Tf rooting for dummies.

Think of rooting as jailbreaking on steroids. "Root" in linux parlance means superuser: a system account with permission to do anything. Jailbreaking gives you the same thing, but jailbreaking does not give you the ability to install new firmware, which rooting does.
Prime is a ROM: a custom firmware. Unlike in the iOS world, android "allows" you to load a whole new operating system that you create yourself or someone else created (referred to as a ROM) onto your device. The ROMs are still Android operating systems, but there are a few advantages:
1) Unlike iOS updates, android updates don't get pushed out to everyone at the same time. Even if an update is available for your device, there is no guarantee that your phone carrier will push it out to you or won't sit on their hands for six months before doing it, effectively crippling your phone. A custom ROM allows you to bypass your carrier and load the updates yourself. This is not as big an issue on the transformer because there's no carrier to speak of. Still, if Asus takes its sweet time releasing the next version of android, you can bet it will be up here as a ROM first;
2) Most ROMs take out crapware that you don't want on your device; and
3) Many ROMs include performance optimizations or overclocks that wouldn't otherwise be possible.
I'm actually not sure if rooting by itself disables Asus updates...I don't think it does (but someone can correct me if I'm wrong). However, if you load Prime or another custom ROM, you will not have updates because there is nothing to update: you are not running Asus firmware anymore. You will have to wait for the developers of Prime to release new versions and flash them manually. Another downside of rooting is that you can lose you warranty. But if you root and need to make use of warranty, you can just unroot (see threads on that).
Hope that helps.
I've been looking to root my eepad. Running 3.2 stock
I've been lurking the forums for a little over a week but not sure if the nvflash method will work with the new update.
I've been reading through the unbricking thread, and this looks to be the easiest way to flash the device. but I still havent seen any confirmations that someone with 3.2 has performed the root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123429&page=30
Unfortunately, since i've been lurking and reading, and not posting, I can't post in that thread to ask yet, since I don't have enough posts.
Here is my current build on the TF.
3.2
GPS: v1.5.0
WiFi: v5.2.52
BT: v6.19
kernel: 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #1
Build #: 8.6.5.6-20110726
many thanks for any assistance

just wanted to add, I did some more digging on the Dev section and found BRK's method to root.
I read through the thread and they stated was functioning with stock non-rooted 3.2 running 8.6.5.6
I tried it out and it worked without a hitch!!!
YAAHOOOO!
installed cicso's anyconnect VPN client and Boom superuser access granted!
For anyone else wanting to try, make sure to just read through the instructions, then re-read, and re-read one more time. then take your time and you'll be good to go.
all the best!

Find a good area, with plenty of sunlight. A steady supply of water is good as well. Be sure the ground is rich in nutrients.

[Q] Iconia A500 3.2.1 ota downgrade

Hey all have a wifi Iconia A500 stock ota 3.2.1 wondering is it safe to downgrade using method two as posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227
Hi i used first method

Did you have 3.2.1 installed or 3.2? Mainly was hoping to use method 2 as it seems more noob proof. Tottaly new to android and dont really get the gist of custom firmware yet. I thought with method 2 their would be less chance of something going wrong.
i had 3.2
i used the following soft: EUUs_SBK_Acer_A501_0.017.01_PA_ATT.exe
i just edit config in the remp folder. i changed uid and model from 501 to 500
Today i bit the bullet and tried method 2 all went smooth no issue now running thors rom on rooted iconia edit note I was on default acer australia rom 3.2.1
ok so after playing with custom roms for full day and not finding one I liked more than the stock I decided to return to stock. I got it done from the 3.2 ota rom from the developer section. Just wondering if I have to do anything else to receive ota updates again. I have used the check for update feature but it says I'm up to date when I know there is a 3.2.1 update available as I had it before I installed the custom from. Is it just a matter of waiting for it?
Anyone here or anywhere else on the web been able to get hold of the stock
3.2.1 update to sideload the update?
ok after spending most of the day reading this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 and trying to digest all the info gee major brain scrammble looks like I will no longer receive ota updates. My bad should have spent more time reading instead of jumping in head first. So now I can either wait for ota updates to be posted here and manually update or go back to custom roms full time. So looks like I will be going with option 2 I found a thread here that ics is in the works so don't feel so bad bout my major stuff up. Out of interest will Acer restore defaults for a price?
Back to stock and getting ota updates see my post on page 25 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155664
Hi bulcmal, you seem to know how to solve my question:
I own a new ICONIA A500 and after a few moment with it I updated to 3.2 without reading about it and knowing that has a lot of bugs. Now I want to go back to OTA 3.1 so my question is next one:
After I use the second method presented here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1276227
Can I update to 3.1 freely (using the update function on the settings).
Thanks a lot.
Method 2 downgrade and you have the right room for your country I don't see why it wouldn't work. After you downgrade when it reboots you will get lots of force close don't panic its fine, then shutdown tablet complete remove your micro sd card delete the downgrade rom and copy the stock rom to the sd card( I just used a cheap card reader for this) then reboot while holding down volume button on left side and power button keap holding till small white text appears in upper left of tablet screen. On a side note its very important to test unzip both updates (the downgrade rom and the stock rom) to be sure they are not corrupt if the process fails to unzip either update you could brick your tab. Also both roms will be called update. Zip don't unzip files any further than this other than to test that they can be unzipped without issues. I take no responsibility if things go pear shaped just describing what I did.

I wouldn't risk updating from the settings menu the downgrade rom is very unstable and you may get errors see post above cheers.
Hi, I read the post above and have two more questions:
First:
I bought the tablet on Amazon US. How do I know which rom do I need?
And second:
After I flash the stock rom, the OTA updates will be available?
I am new to this flashing thing so bare with me if my questions are a bit stupid.
Thanks a lot.
Do you think this will work with a USB storage?

I dont know wich stock rom you would need Usally you would search for the rom based on what country you are in. But seeing as you imported it I dont know how it would work. On the other hand if you got ota updates in your country perhaps it is now running your countries firmware. I succesfully got ota updates after doing this.

??? Do you mean can you use usb storage to do the downgrade and the installation of the stock rom? If so I think it only works from the micro sd card slot.
Also guys the 3.2.1 update is currently being rolled out if you dont need root you could always wait for that update it may also fix your issues cheers
how long has the 3.2.1 update been rolling out? still stuck on 3.2 here in melbourne. I got the tablet a week ago and it updated only up to 3.2.
I originally got it early-mid november, then acer pulled the update. It was re released about 2 weeks ago. I am still waiting for it to come back to.
ok, thought i was being left behind. guess i have to be patient lol

[Q] First time flashing Zoom Wifi and no good tutorials! Do you know of any?

I have a decent amount of experience flashing a couple of HP Touchpads, our Nexus S 4G CDMA phones and our HTC One V CDMA phones. I have learned alot along the way but for the last 2 days I have finally decided to unlock, root and flash our Xooms. The Xooms have already been updated to Android 4.1 with OTA updates and it has not been nearly as straightforward as my previous experiences. My motivation was Motorola ceasing to support them and a desire to get the Team EOS Xoom Jellybean MR1 4.2 Windray nightlies installed!
I started by going to the Motorola page with the official unlock my device instructions. Nothing I did could get those instructions to work. Finally I returned to XDA...my go to place in the past. It seems that I have finally accomplished my goal, but I could not find any instructions that could have easily helped me to avoid several pitfalls.
The very first thing I wish any instructions would have told me is that the latest CWM Recovery OR TWRP can not read the external SD card on Xooms. I do not know exactly why this is, but it seems it is either because I already had OTA updates prior OR for some reason I can't figure out.
So, in posting here I am wondering if anyone can point me to a comprenhinsive set of instructions for doing what I had so much difficulty doing so that I can save it for future reference. I assure you that I searched not only these forums, but the internet exhaustively, and although I was able to find answers to the many challenges that came up, the tutorials on this forum were so old that it surprised me. Does anyone know of a tutorial for unlocking, rooting and flashing the latest Android to a Xoom that helps to avoid the pitfalls?
Thanks!

To unlock bootloader and root try LordAIOTool (or popularly LAIOT), it will do this work for you... Then after I think you already know how to flash if you said you have experience (reboot into recovery blah blah blah)

[Q] Noob questions

I've been out of the development loop for a pretty long time (1.5 years) and am looking to update my phone. Long story short I have the Razr HD (926) rooted running 4.4.2. I get prompted for a system update (183.46.15.en.US) but it fails every time (likely because I'm rooted). It's been like this for a while and I'm sick of getting notified of the update every day.
I'd like to update to the latest but I'm not sure what that is. I'm familiar with RSD lite so I guess I am just looking for the latest working version I can update to. I've searched around the forums and saw threads for KitKat, but I've been out of the loop for so long I don't even know if it has been officially released yet or if there is even an official/unofficial build for the Razr HD.
Sorry for all the noob questions, all these threads are a lot to take in when I've been away for so long whenI don't know all the lingo and what version I should get.

As you say, your device fails the OTA because it's rooted. I would strongly suggest that you unlock your device's bootloader (its warranty is probably approaching EOL anyway if it hasn't already). To do that, the best possible tutorial would be here, imho. If for some reason the .15 firmware were to get installed on your device (again unlikely, since it's rooted), you would not be able to unlock its bootloader, because there is no known method to accomplish that atm. So, my advice would be to unlock your BL with the towelroot method, flash the most recent .15 FXZ and enjoy.

Awesome, thanks for your help. Is there a more recent version I should flash or is .15 the latest?

[XOOM2/XYBOARD] Rooting MZ609 on Jellybean

I recently got my hands on a Xoom 2 MZ609 tablet, and I'm trying to root it and hopefully flash a custom ROM, maybe use it to cook my own and tinker a bit. However, I'm having a hell of a time tracking down the needed info. Because the Xoom 2 never got its own forum and there are some seriously old links scattered throughout all the various threads, I'm starting to come up short. Here's what I've got so far.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1502589
This thread doesn't cover JB. There were a few JB-related links in later posts, but they're dead or non-functional.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591388
This thread is for upgrading to JB from a rooted ICS device. It includes a bunch of stuff I've not seen elsewhere, including tips on manipulating the Moto bootloader and avoiding issues with it while getting the OTA update.
Kingo Android Root and VRoot
The previous thread also suggests using Kingo to root JB once the OTA update is installed, but I've read in other threads that Kingo and Vroot are Bad Ideas(tm) due to IMEI and s/n mining. Can't really find anything newer than 2013 or so about whether this was ever resolved; apparently the Vroot/Kingo devs basically said they weren't doing anything shady, but I can't find any indication that this was verified.
So, uh, I'm just trying to put the pieces together and figure out where to go from here. I'm even willing to put together a guide with all the info in one place, if I can just put it all together first.
You can try Saferoot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
Keep on mind, that it be stuck on "Trying to disable Knox" for about 5 minutes and be patient - everything should be allright!
