I am an Android newbie here, but my god this seems difficult!
I am trying to take songs off either my usb flash drive or the memory card and put them onto the hard drive of the tab. Why the hell is this so difficult?! I must be really missing something here...
I can find the MP3 files on the devices but I have no clue how to get them into the "music" app on the tablet or even just somewhere onto the tablet itself. Any ideas here? And sorry if I sound like a complete idiot...
The media scanner will find songs on any attached storage. If you really want the songs on internal storage, use a file explorer to move them from /Removable/MicroSD to /SDcard

It might take a bit, but the system will eventually scan all attached storage for media. Also, the way storage is mounted varies widely and is not always intuitive. In the case of the TF, the internal storage is mounted as /sdcard and a microSD in the tablet is mounted as /removable/microsd. Not sure what other storage is mounted as, I dont have a dock yet.
Thanks for the quick response. I had nothing pop up when I put in either Microsd, SD or my flash drive. So the "media scanner" ain't working?
And I just went to the app store and downloaded a file explorer, but now I cant find any of the drives?!
This is friggin painful! I was using filemanagerhd and could see the mp3's but there is now way to copy them onto the hardrive?

there are no drives in android. the filesystem is organized as a tree and as such, everything is attached to the root or "/"
off the top of my head the internal storage is in
/sdcard
while microsd is in
/Removable/microsd
if you don't see your microsd, it didn't get recognized for one reason or another
also why the hell are you downloading a file explorer when one is included.
Yeah, use the built in file manager. Most of the ones on the market are designed for the phone variant of Android and restrict you to only being able to view the /sdcard folder.
Also, make sure you're actually correctly inserting the SD/MicroSDs (i.e. pushed in all the way and not upside down, etc).
First, how the heck are you even connecting an SD card or USB drive? If you're using the gender charger, I wouldn't count on that.
When inserting your microsd card, do you get a message that it's preparing media and then an icon in your system tray? If not, it's not seeing your card correctly. You should be able to open the file manager from there.
The easiest way I've found to put files on my device is by buying a program named "Wifi Explorer Pro." It was only 0.99 and it lets you open a web browser and upload files to your device over your wifi network. The only thing that isn't great is I can't find a way to select multiple files.
Otherwise, I think you can copy files with the file manager by selecting them and doing a long press. You can then navigate to the folder you want them copied to and paste them.
When I first got my device I just put my microsd card in a sd card adapter, plugged it into my laptop, copied over a bunch of media files and the next time I put the card in the Transformer they showed up.
That's the way it should work... Also, have you updated to the latest firmware from Asus' site? In addition, a reboot never hurts. Usually.

No need to download any file manager as it is on your device. Go to file manager if you don't see it on your desktop, click on apps at the top right hand corner and select file manager
With your microSD in the slot with music on it, go to the root directory....then click on removable, then microSD, You should see your music there.
Now click on the pencil icon on the top right hand corner, this will put square boxes on the left hand side of all your files and folder. Select the music or folders of music that you want to copy to the device by putting a check mark by it. Then select the copy icon on the top right hand corner.
Now go back to root, navigate to sdcard, in there there will be a folder called music, click on it. Once you are in the folder, click on the paste icon in the top right hand corner. Your music is now on your device, remove your card.

FYI - File Manager HD is specifically written for HC. It's much better than stock I think.
For superuser stuff the stock file manager is no bueno, i'm using root explorer with no complaints.
If you cannot see your sd card it probably needs to be formatted again via a phone or even a pc but try and keep it as FAT32.
Other things i've noticed when my media scanner doesn't run is to reboot and it for sure will run on startup
A really good file manager for those with old habits, especially if you have the dock, is Ghost Commander. It's a two-pane file manager like Total Commander or Far, and it's fully keyboard enabled with familiar shortcuts - Tab to switch between panels, +/- to select/deselect files by pattern. It also uses number keys to represent F1-F10 - so 5 is "Copy", 6 is "Move", 7 is "MkDir" etc. And all letter keys start inline file search by name. Very fast when used keyboard-only.

I always just drag and drop, create a folder called music > artist > album name > music files
doesn't get any easier than that.

I have an HTC touch Dual, windows mobile 6.5. I have a 16gb micro sd inside of it and everything was going pretty well. then today after taking some pictures and messing around with windows media player mobile, things went strange on my memory card. first i noticed none of my songs on windows media player would work. then i looked for them using total comander or whatever, and thats when i saw the strange files and folders. they are mostly system folders appearently, and i cannot delete them. All my programs installed on the card still work, and pictures i have on the card are still there (not the ones i took with the camera), in fact, the only thing that seems to be missing is my roms folder with all my emulator roms, and my music folder with all my music. this is a list of what i have on the card now:
6 empty "file folders" named "." (just a period, guessing they call it a "file folder because they are unsure what it is, but it does have the folder icon) they are all 0 bytes
a "file folder" called "┘kφ$╥M╞.¬√½", 0 bytes
another "file folder" called "║h88 Ω*.***" also 0 bytes
another one called "î┤I¬U¡R.┼Xπ" 0 bytes
Then i have my images folder with all my images uploaded for backgrounds (not my camera pictures), program files, DCIM (which is now empty but i used to have all the pictures and videos from my camera), movies folder, pleco folder (chinese dictionary), and "my voices" which are the recordings i've done.
Now the best parts
a ╥¼ File called "╥/ê≤}. ╥¼" which is 2.85GB (Must be the roms)
a JQ File called "╝µï½ƒ0.Jq" which is 3.60GB (must be all my music because this is how much i uploaded to the card)
and a ∩ File called "▓φα¡d≥ c.∩ " which is 2.71GB (and this one might be all my videos and pictures from my camera, but that seems like a lot and i don't remember having that many pictures)
So obviously my data is still here, but its just crammed into these unknown files. It's not like i really care about all the music and that stuff, I would have just deleted these files if it would have let me, but it won't let me at all. I really would hate to reformat my entire card because of all the programs i've installed and i don't want to go through all of that again... unless now that i'm thinking about it, i could just backup my program files then reformat my card. i'll probably try this. anyway, i don't have anywhere else i can put my micro sd card, just my phone, so if anybody has any idea whats happened to this darn thing, please let me know! thank you very much!
Your sd card is corrupt. Try to scan it (either on the device w/ pocket mechanic, sk tools or something similar), or connect in disk drive mode to a pc and scan it that way (right click on the drive-F: or whatever-then select properties-tools-fix errors). If scanning doesn't work (do it several times if it does), then you're screwed. Copy every file you can to your pc (one folder @ a time), then format the card. It will probably be fine after the format.
Next: change the save path on the camera, and pretty much every thing else, to main memory. Having crap written quickly to the card all the time can cause corruption. Scan frequently, at least once a week, if not more. Do not have temp folders located on the card. Really, really do not have a custom SIP on the card. Just try to use the card for storage, but not as main memory.

How do I:
1. Get Android to not pull videos, pictures, and music from games? My gallery, video player, doubletwist, etc is full of stuff like that.

A search would have answered your questions. your SD card memory is the phones main programs memory. IT is where alot of your apps store the data. You can use many apps to as a file explorer it even comes with one. Its called My Files. I use Root Explorer which allows to access Root files and make changes to them. The sd card slot is for....wait for it.......More memory. As for it not seeing the files. there are a few music apps that let you set the folders it scans. Power Amp is the best at the moment IMHO. You can also put a file in the folders that you dont want scanned named no media, (with root explorer you can copy one of these files from the root folders if you can make one.)
with pre existing folders (for apps and such)
create a "new file" in it named " .nomedia " with the . (preriod)
this can be done with root explorer or in windows. create blank text document rename to .nomedia with NO .txt then copy and move to folders.
nothing in that folder or sub folder will be included in media scans
or if it is a personal folder you are creating name it starting with a . (period)
and ya internal SD gets messy. Use external for your files to keep organized!
Wouldn't my SD card (even if it is SDHC) be slower? DoubleTwist is already inexcusably slow with my files on the SD itself, what would it be like on the external?
And yes, I know what the SD is, I was just asking why it was named that.
Bumping this because I am curious about any speed differences, and because I would like my SD Card to matter.
Right, i wanted to transfer some files from my phone to my tf, like skype, which i cannot get in china. I saved the files on an sd card using appsaver. Then i put the sd card in my tf and browsed to it. To my surprise it doesnt show the appsaver directory, only the default directories in "/mnt/sdcard" and in "/sdcard" in the root.
Does anyone know why that is?

Are you browsing with a different file explorer than the one supplied with the TF? The best way I've found is to tap the SD symbol by the clock, then tap the folder icon that pops up. I'm using the standard rom.
Ah! That's interesting! I did try both the default browser and ASTRO. Neither showed me the content of the SD card. Interesting... But indeed, I did spot the SD card symbol on the tool bar and that one DOES show the content of the SD card. Interesting how A3.0 does this differently...

I had the same problem when trying to explore using ES file explorer, it's a bit odd.
it is two page before /sdcard directory
it is called " Removable"
i try to transfer all my music onto my micro sd to listen to it on my eee pad but once i transfer the files over and put the sd card back in my eee pad the files seem to have deleted themselves ??
Not sure if this also applies to the Transformer but with my G-Tablet you have to put a .nomedia file in the SDCARD root directory to keep the OS from deleting the media files.

You can do it in notepad but I use notepad++ as notepad sometimes saves it as a .txt file without you knowing. Just open a new file and save it as ".nomedia" without the quotes obviously. Make sure it doesn't save as a .txt file and don't put anything in the file. Copy this file over to the root of your internal memory and SDCARD. I also put it in each of my "Movies" and "Music" folders just in case. Hope this helps!
I'm not sure the media scanner bug is to blame here (and therefore the .nomedia fix would be possibly useless). Though I have had the problem on my g-tablet, I have music files on my TF that I put there by putting my microSD into my computer, copying the files and then re-inserting it into my TF. I have rebooted my TF many times since then, and all of my music files are still there and still playable within the HC music app and others.
The issue with the g-tablet is/was a bug in the media scanner and is only present in some ROMs (not the stock one or most anything based heavily on stock), and no one seemed to know quite why it happens or how to fix it. The files would only disappear when the media scanner would run, and a lot of folks indicated that they could literally watch the files get deleted as it scanned. The solution was to place a file named ".nomedia" inside the folders where the media resides -- this causes the media scanner to skip those folders (also making the stock apps like your music app, not see those files automatically, forcing you to play them from within a file manager app of some sort).
OP, have you tried copying anything other than music files to your microSD? Do those also not show up?
Also make sure you properly eject the SD card before removing it from your PC.
Okay so I tried the .nomedia trick and iut didn't work but strangely only half of my music is getting deleted ,it is all on there when I check on computer but then i safely remove it and when I put it back in my transformer only half is left weird?
Its not full by the way 32gb card 11gb of music
I have a feeling that File Manager HD is screwing with files on my microSD. Are any of you running it?
Im running into the same issue on my g-tab, going to switch to stock see if i have the same issue. Been trying to get my music files on for the past 4 days with no success, they just keep getting deleted.
I had the same problem but it seems to be working well now. I wasn't ejecting the SD card before removing it from my PC. Make sure that you right click on the sd card from your computer, and go to eject. I haven't had any other problems after that.

i have a 32GB SD class 4 in my phone. it's been formatted so all it has is the lost.dir (i'm on a mac)
since there are no folders there - how do i gets apps to use it? where do i put music and other files? i have podcasts and other stuff i'd like to drag over but i'm not understanding how the different apps would see it.
i can move some apps to SD card but i think it just moves them to the internal SD card.
it seems that there are 2 SD cards in the phone but no way to differentiate between the 2.
also it sometimes takes forever for the gx2 to recognize the card, its kind of annoying. is having a class 10 better for this?
I use filemanager from the market and it recognizes my external as........"_externalSD" also allows me to transfer files between the two.

When you have your phone plugged in pull down the alert bar on the top of the screen and press the "USB Connection" option. It should ask you if you want to turn USB mode on and have a picture of an Android. This will allow you to mount your internal and external sd as if they were regular flash sticks. You can then copy whatever you want to them. I also like to use drop box in combination with Astro for moving things to and from the cloud.

1. G2x has the internal sd card partitioned into 2 parts (1 for OS & apps & other for storage & apps).
2. Sd card's class does help but it is not something important until you're running a high def video.
3. Use any file explorer app (File expert etc) for copying files from Internal SD Card to External SD Card.
4. Most of the app's setting menu gives you an option to physically select the storage destination folder i.e. external sd card.

Yes, just simply copy the entire FOLDER of the particular file to your External SD Card & if in future, if u download something directly from your phone then simply just copy/paste it from your using any file manager app.

so i have the phone connected to the computer and I see 2 No Name disks. That's fine. I put a folder called music at the root level of the 32GB card. Now I find that folder in File Expert and I go to play something and it says that file isn't supported. I tried Google Music and Doubletwist. Just mp3's from a CD. are there certain settings for android i need to know about? and do i need to go to File Expert to play this music everytime? Or should I be going through doubletwist on my mac and using it like itunes?
thanks you any help, i'm pretty clueless with this aspect of android right now, trying to catch up.
also both SD cards randomly unmount themselves. is there a reason for this or a way to prevent this?

Ok. After reading your problems, here are my suggestions:
1) Copy your 32 GB SD Card files on your computer.
2) Format your 32 GB card. Replace all files back in it.
3) Stop worrying about putting certain files (pics, music) in a root folder. Simply just put any files OR folders inside the Sd card.
4) When it comes to File sharing, think of Android in the same category as Windows.
