[Q] Wanting to unlock my Tmobile Mytouch 3g Slide- Recommendations? - General Questions and Answers

Looking for some recommended sites to buy the Unlock code off of.
I don't wanna get scammed, but I don't wanna pay a lot [preferably no more than $20-$25]
Or someone that can verify this rumor I heard, That you can take your phone into your carriers store, and they can/will unlock it for free, if you say you're going to be out of the country.
Thanks

try resetting it or downloading stock rom and wiping the phone down if ur phone has SDCARD

Heh you misunderstood me.
I mean unlock from mobile service.
Turns out you CAN get it unlocked for free from your carrier. so whoohoo for that!

[Q] How do I tell if it is carrier unlocked?

I got a free Samsung Focus today, thanks to the Microsoft giveaway for TechEd, where the first 50 from TechEd who publish get a free phone. I was told that the phone was carrier unlocked... But since I'm on Verizon, I can't use it anyway. I am probably going to sell it on ebay (although I'm considering loaning it to a couple iPhone friends for a bit, so they can get the full WP7 experience), but I want to make sure it is unlocked before I advertise it as unlocked. How do I know for sure?
Also, if I do loan it out to friends, can an ATT (or T-Mobile since it is supposedly unlocked) customer just pull out their SIM and put it in here, and go with it? Or is there something their carrier needs to do?
Thanks!

Correct, you just put in a SIM card and use it. No carrier attention needed. To test if it is unlocked, you need to find a T-Mobile SIM card, or any other non-AT&T SIM card, and put it in. If it is locked, the phone will let you know immediately and you won't be able to use the phone or cell data.
Thanks. I'll have to have one of my iPhone friends try it for me. I don't know if anyone around here is on T-Mobile.
you can usually just go to tmobile and ask for one, sometimes they'll give one to you. and it doesn't have to be activated.

purchasing a used G2X

hello all
I want to replace my Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant with the LG Optimus G2X.
as I understood, the G2X comes sim-locked to t-mobile's only sims...
is it possible to unlock the phone somehow myself or do I have to go and purchase an unlocking code or something like that from online sites?
I'm planning to buy a used G2X, so I have no idea if doing so, I'll be able to contact t-mobile and ask for the unlocking code myself, or even if they allow such a thing ..
any help would be appreciated.

If you have a T-Mobile account in good standing more than 90 days they will give you the unlock code for free. If you are not a TMO customer or meet the requirements above you need to buy a code.
I can sell you an unlock code for $5.00. Cheaper on ebay also but I give good service.
you can provide the unlocking code instantly or does it take few minutes/hours to get it?
I'm afraid of purchasing the used G2X since I have no way of checking it beforehand since it is sim-locked... right?

The code can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours to retrieve. On the weekends if LG's database is down you might have to wait over 24 hours. Normally you have the code in less than one hour.
You can check a lot of functions without the sim. If the seller has a T-Mobile sim you can use theirs to try it.

Question about using prepaid sims on my tp2...

If I unlock a verizon htc touch pro 2 (Rhodium) will I be able to use prepaid sim card based unlimited plans on it? The kind you can get from walmart and stuff? I don't want to buy a new phone because I still love my touch pro 2 but having a verizon account isn't possible anymore so I would like to get some sort of prepaid plan for it. Thanks.

Yes, if you do the SIM unlock and get a prepaid provider that uses (regular) SIM cards.
Note this is different from the hSPL process.
I already unlocked the spl a long time ago, using mighty rom on it. Would all providers work? I'm wanting to get one of those unlimited text things from like t-mobile or even verizon. Is there any free way to unlock the phone? If not do you know the best way to go about doing it?
What do you mean by "regular" sim cards? I've never used anything but Verizon cdma on someone else's actual account so I'm not sure about sim cards. I've had lots of phones but they have all been on verizon and cdma.

Not all sim cards are the same size/shape. There are some adapters out there for sale, but I don't suggest going that route. If it is a major carrier, and the sim card fits your phone, and your phone is sim unlocked it should work.

Verizon = CDMA.
You need a GSM provider that uses standard size SIM cards. Some providers use different sized cards (as noted previously), but most use standard size cards.
I know verizon is cdma but the touch pro 2 has a sim slot as well because it was sold as a "world phone". So as long as I unlock it and the sim card I get fits it should work? I've only seen one type of sim card before but from a bunch of different phones and they were all the same size as the touch pro 2 takes.
As for the second part of my question I'm still a bit confused about. Is there any free way to unlock the phone? If not do you know the best way to go about doing it? Should I take it to a provider with a local store, use a site that does it, etc?

First question has been answered several times. Yes.
There is not a free way to unlock the phone.
However, if you had looked at the stickies... In this very section... You might've noticed this thread. I hope...
No reason to be rude man... I just didn't want to spend $20 on unlocking it then another $40 on the card just to find out it won't work. Not all of us are "well off", can't just throw away money like that... I could eat for weeks off that money lol...
Also I didn't look for anything on how to unlock it because, like I said, I wanted to know if the prepaid things would work on it in the first place. Thanks for all the answers though guys it has helped a lot. My phone was on my ex wife's mother's plan and the 2 year contract just ran out so she closed the account. I can't afford a new phone to go with a prepaid plan. Just trying to find a way to have a phone again so I can talk to my children and want to make sure I don't spend money I don't have on something that won't work.

Just take your time and read as much as you can.
Wish there was a 'free way' to unlock the phone, but Olinex is still allowed to charge for that privilege... Sorry.
Mind explaining the whole unlock thing? It seems to me there are "official" sites, random people, companies, local stores, pretty much anyone can do it... Do they have to have a license to register the code on some global database or what? I've softmodded and hardmodded just about everything I've ever owned since my sms (yea that's kinda funny talking about phones but I meant sega master system...) flashcart but I don't really get this... From what I've read you get a code from someone (which can be anyone who can do it I guess) and that unlocks your device. So does that unlock your device 100% or only on networks that person/company has license to unlock on?

I don't really understand how the SIM unlocking process works unfortunately... I know Oli's works for our devices, so if you're going to pay for one that's the one to go with.

Flash to cricket?

I have a Photon Q 4G LTE from sprint. I lost my job and cant pay the bill. I'm sure sprint has locked the esn. I have seen you can flash my phone to cricket, But I read this on motorola's site.
DOES UNLOCKING THE BOOTLOADER MEAN I CAN USE MY DEVICE WITH ANY WIRELESS OPERATOR?
No, this does not disable a carrier subsidy lock if one exists. Some subscriptions are tied to a specific wireless operator and the phone cannot be used on another operator's network. A "locked bootloader" and "carrier subsidy lock" are thus two entirely different topics. Do not unlock the bootloader if you are want to to disable the carrier subsidy lock.
If I unlock the bootloader does that mean I will not be able to flash to cricket.
Also with a locked esn from sprint will I even be able to flash my phone over to cricket.
Sorry for the NooB questions here. I am new to cell phone modification but everyone has to start somewhere. :cyclops:

Unlocking the boatloader doesn't mean much. If you unlock it, nothing "bad" or "negative" happens. The reason for the statement of Motorola's site is so people don't unlock the bootloader thinking it will carrier unlock them.
As for actually flashing the phone to Cricket, I'm almost positive it can be done, but I can't answer that. What I CAN do however, is point you to this awesome forum that has to do with cricket phones and non-cricket phones that either have been flashed to cricket or are being worked on a working flash to cricket:

Think of it as a Cricket-Flasher's XDA.
Sweet thanx for the info. Im still confused though if i unlock the bootloader and root it would i still be able to flash to another carrier

Figure out what Cricket needs in the way of OS and get them to activate the ESN. Obviously they need to make themselves the APN
Do yall think a flash to cricket from sprint is still possible with the new law. I would flash myself and then take the phone to cricket.

Well, this has always been one of those questionable things. I don't think it's technically illegal, so long as you aren't swapping the ESN or something like that.

The dcma thing said you cant unlock cellphones anymore but you can tablets. Its crazy if you ask me but big companies cried to much about people unlocking phones before the contract is up.

Yea, it said "legacy" phones were exempt. So technically our phone should be exempt... it was made before that law went into place.
Either way, just don't turn it into a business and you should be fine. It's your device, and you're not doing it over & over for profit.
Note - I am not replacement for legal counsel. I do not and cannot advise on the legality of anything.
Nice. i lost my job and couldnt pay my bill do you think sprint would give me the unlock code? Whats the diffrence between legacy phone and regular phones

Based on the legalese I read, it would be any phone sold after the law went into place, which was Jan. 1 2013 I think?
As for Sprint giving you the code, if your account is not in good standing I doubt it.
Note - I am also not a Sprint employee, lol.
Sweet thanx for the info

Experience with carrier unlocking with TMO jump on demand

I'm a first timer with jump on demand and was wondering what other people experience when trying to carrier unlock. I wasnt on JOD when I got the note 4 and within a few days I had it carrier unlocked using a unlock service and didn't have any issues.
Does anyone think I will have any issues this time around now that I'm on JOD? Some people are saying that since the note comes with the unlocking app, that even if paying for a unlock code, that the app will not even let me use the paid for code. I need to return my N5 before time runs out if I'm gonna have trouble.
Thanks in advance and I truly appreciate everyone's info that could help me get carrier unlock without troubles.
Can't believe that nobody has had any experience with trying to carrier unlock when on t-mobile jump on demand. I know there is another thread that talks about unlock, but nothing in reference to jump on demand.
I'm trying to find out if purchasing a code would work or not. I'm running out of time to be able to return my N5.
Thanks again!
I don't know the answer, but you get the same phone regardless of JOD or not... so I'm thinking, if it can be unlocked, it can be unlocked on JOD too...
Just my $.02
I can't see how TMO could block you from SIM unlocking the phone if you pay for it through a service online.
T-Mobile has a policy where they will give you an unlock code if the phone is on the network for a specific amount of time. I think it's either 90 or 120 days on the T-Mobile network. I contacted them via chat for my Note4 and they gave me the unlock code for free.

I have checked with several unlocking services and they all are saying they can't unlock the N5 because of T-Mobile. Here is what the last service reply to me. See below....
Hi Chrisp,
Unfortunately we cannot help you.
T-Mobile has modified the firmware phone in such a way that it only can be unlocked trough their mobile application.
Please do not place an order on our website because even if we manage to make the phone ask for the SIM NETWORK UNLOCK PIN most likely it wouldn't work.
Let us know if we can assist you further.
its irritating if you pay full price and show them its paid for, they make you wait 40 days.

I here ya and agree. At least they will unlock it after 40 days no matter if it's paid in full or not.
