i just ordered a Xoom and have the following question:
Does the micro USB port provide power e.g. for a USB Stick, so that an adapter is enough for host mode or do I need to buy an powered USB hub?

Yes, it does provide a small amount of power, enough to power a usb thumb drive and charge your phone.
However it doesn't provide enough current to power a 2.5" external drive.
That's a pitty! I hoped to do that...
Is there any battery powered usb hub?

Sure it does. It puts out about 600 ma. Powers my 2.5 seagate 1 tb drive.

My 320GB Seagate powers up, but I can't see any files on it. Don't know if I'm doing something wrong though.
I know my host cable is OK because I can see my 1GB thumb drive.

I just wanted to relate my findings when using external hard drives. The Gtab puts out limited milliamps of 5 volt power which sometimes isn't enough to power up external drives all the way. The leds light up and the motor spins but no read / write = no works!
Yesterday I received my malata / gtab dock and had hoped that it would be able to power up a external drive since it had the power supply plugged directly into itself. This in itself did not work. However using a USB Y Power cable plugged into both the Gtab and the base unit usb ports did the trick! Seems the Y cable can pick-up enough power using both ports to power up the drives!
The drives that didn't work before (sata) now were found and worked properly.
Could I get a link of your dock you are talking about?

Odds are you are not going to be walking around with the external HD and dock attached to your "G so why not just get a $10 power supply from RS and power the HD with it. If the HD doesn't have a power port, connect the Power side of the Y cable to the supply.
Wanted to ask those who already have their tablet and dock whether you can plug a USB external HDD (without its own power) into the USB port and use it, or whether external HDD need to have their own power supply? Does the USB port on the dock provide enough power to external HDD?
yes, I've got a 500GB passport and it works great, I stor my movies on it and had no problem playing directly from the hard drive

Thats brilliant news as I have a passport drive as well....just waiting for my dock now.
and it can read and write to ntfs formatted drives. so no 4gb limit.
yep..my western digital portable works perfect on TF.. not sure about those requires additional powers..but it makes sense they should work well too

I was able to get my Seagate Freeagent GO drive to work perfectly through the keyboard dock. In fact, I had an SD card, USB mouse and external HD all going at the same time

What would be the difference between a 3.0 usb drive and a 2.0 usb drive? I think the usb ports on the TF are 3.0. TIA - sheureka
interesing.. I can power the drive fine (which is more than I can do from some of the usb ports on my desktop ).
usb 3 seems to have more connections and more power... i noticed that the ps for the tf is 15v vs 5v for standard usb.. I don't know about speed differences though. there are some threads on blown ps's with extension cables too so there is something specific here.
so. i think it's great that the usb here can power a hdd!

Need to be careful. Many people are using USB connectors to do things that are very different than spec. Bottom line a physical USB connector may not have USB signals & power on it.
I think it's the drive as it runs fine on my computer, reformatted it NTFS, and even with plugged into both usb ports it still doesn't read in the TF.
USB powers it, tried usb mouse okay, sd card in kb is fine too.
I don't have a problem getting another hdd (maybe one listed here as working).
any other thoughts appreciated.
I am having a similar problem with a WD 500GB and an Oyen esata/USB 2.0 enclosure. Drive works fine on powered USB 2.0 port on my laptop, but not on the Transformer. The drive powers on, the Removable Storage notification flashes, but the drive is not recognized.

Speed and power required. USB 3 is a lot faster.
USB 2.0 ~60MB/sec
USB 3.0 up to 640MB/sec
Prime 1.5 solved the problem. Apparently some custom kernels cannot handle NTFS.
my transformer would freeze if I tried plugging in a drive with multiple partitions, not sure how many partitions it supports formatted the drive to one partition and all is well
I have a Maxtor 3200 Personal storage 500GB with own power supply and it works.
I also have a Seagate 1TB Expansion Portable drive USB2.0 powered and this also works.

I am having similar issues as Adam. I have a 1TB Buffalo Ministation. My win vista pc also didn't see it initially... had to download the driver. Then I formatted it with a 32GB FAT32 partition and did the rest NTFS. My dvd player couldn't see the NTFS so I tried it to exFAT. Took all night, and still no compatibility (had to try). So now I formatted it back to NTFS. The transformer hasn't been able to recognize it in any formatted format. Not even the FAT32 bit. But it does power it nicely.
Hope someone has a trick up their sleeve, this little hdd is so portable!
SOLVED! I plugged it in on the other side (which is the left side of the dock) and VOILA! I have NTFS and the partitioned FAT32 access. How nice Now to figure out if I can somehow use it without the dock.....
I have a 2.5" 750gb Seagate Momentus HDD and a 2.5" 120gb OCZ Vertex 3 SSD both can be powered just fine by the TF. Using the Vertex 3 drive uses less power than my Seagate Momentus because there are no moving parts so I prefer it.
Incidentally, the TF uses USB 2.0 ports, not 3.0. You can use a USB 3.0 cable as it is backward compatible to 2.0. My Vertex 3 has a USB 3.0 type interface on the external enclosure it's housed in but it kicks back to 2.0 speeds while plugged into the TF which is more than enough while watching movies from it.

It should be 5 v dc i believe at 1000ma.
Apparently someone have had success with a 128gb HDD... No external power needed...

looking to go completely wireless with a hard drive for the note pro for movies, music, ebooks, etc. i bought a toshiba 500gb porta-harddrive (UNpowered) and a usb2 otg cable... but its not quite working because the drive doesn't pull enough power to run (it just sits there ticking). when i plug the drive into a powered usb hub and the hub into the otg, it works fine; but then i'm still tethered by the hub power cord.
anyone have a completely wireless setup that works and care to share what equipment they're using? i'm thinking a usb3 otg cable might do the trick, but haven't been able to find one locally, and want to be certain before dealing with the shipping hassle.

The additional conductors added in the wider micro USB 3.0 cable are for data, not power. What you could do is get a USB battery...

I have a Seagate GoFlex 1Tb hdd. I formated it exfat and it works fine with a mocro-USB 2.0 otg cable or with a new micro-USB 3.0 org cable. The NotePro has no problem powering it with either cable.

thanks for the response. two things:
1) can you look at the fcc sticker on the hard drive and tell me what the power draw is? it should say something like 5V+- XXX mA. i'm curious about how many amps it pulls. i think the problem with mine is that it lists 1000mA, which exceeds both usb2 (500mA) and usb3 (900mA) specs.
2) is your tablet rooted? not sure it matters, but i'm reading mixed opinions on the matter in the fora, and it might be a factor.
i've also formatted exfat and that didn't seem to fix it, and it works fine attached to a powered hub, so it looks like its a power issue.

yes, but usb3 allows for more power to be drawn then usb2 according to the specs. turns out not enough for the hard drive either way unfortunately so the battery might be the way to go. would need a 'y' cable though since there is no power input for the hard drive.
now i'm thinking of just getting one of those hard drive/battery/wi-fi hotspot combos that seagate or corsair makes.

1. Power draw is not listed on my HDD. The part number is 9ZF2N5-501 1 TB if that helps. The only connector is theUSB 3 connector, no seperate power input.
2. No, my NotePro is not Rooted.

As long as the battery of the hdd has enough power to maintain its wifi service this is the absolutely no wires solution. Easy to operate but slow in terms of data transfer. Fast enough to watch Hd-video though.

thats exactly what i was planning on using it for. i've never been able to stream anything via wifi to the tablet (netflix is okay, i mean from my local drives), though, as it always buffers and stutters making video playback unwatchable. probably just my home network, but for almost 200$, i'm a little gunshy about this option.

will try this. cables connecting the devices i don't mind... i just don't want to be tied to a wall outlet. especially if there are no walls available. :cyclops: i went with the 16000 easyacc for $50, and the 9pin usb otg y cable for $9; so that setup is much cheaper then the wifi/harddrive/battery device.
final outcome
thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions.
so i ended up getting a power pack, and an otg y-cable to hook up to the hard drive. i actually bought two otg cables, one usb3 9pin and a usb2 5pin. the usb2 had a micro female connector for the power, while the usb3 had a standard male connector.
the usb3 otg didn't work. plugged the power pack in, plugged the harddrive in, plugged it into the tablet.... nothing.
the usb2 otg did work, luckily the power pack had a male-female adapter. tablet recognized the hard drive was present, but said it was blank, and es file explorer popped up a warning that otg only supported fat32 (hard drive was originally exfat). so after reformatting to fat32, everything seems to work well enough.
i don't know why the usb3 cable doesn't work, it may just be a dud but i have nothing else to test it with. all in all, an annoying and frustrating experience getting this to work. i don't see why anyone actually thinks these sorts of tablets are going to become laptop replacements when basic functionality requires so much teeth pulling.

I have an USB OTG cable that I can connect some of the peripherals with (like flash storage), but most of the accessories won't work, presumably because of the lack of power supply. I watched some DIY videos (and threads here on XDA) on how to add external power supply to USB cable, so I'd like to ask some questions about such matter:
1. Is there any chance of damaging the phone, since there will be external power added? Can it make the micro USB port unfunctional?
2. If I connect more power than needed, for example, if I connect 6V current, while the standard USB current is 5V, can it damage the peripherals I'm connecting to?
My phone is Xperia T (confirmed OTG support)

1. Supply power only on the periphery. By phone take only 2 wires DATA.
2. Only stable 5V. And 500mA or more.
