[Q] Can't connect with Odin, any other way to restore to stock? - Captivate General

Hey guys,
Recently I have encountered a problem with my Captivate. When I connect it to my PC in download mode, I am notified that the device is not recognized. Thus, Odin doesn't see it.
I searched the forums and found instances of people with similar issues, but there isn't any real standard way to fix this.
So as it stands, I have a 2.3.3 Rom on my phone, with the updated bootloaders, and no way to get back to stock so I can trade it in on the warranty.
I am convinced that this is an issue with the phone itself, as I have tried connecting to Odin while in Download Mode on two separate computers, I have tried with two separate usb cables, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers a few times, I don't have KIES installed, I have tried different versions of the drivers, I have tried with USB debugging on and off, and so on. So clearly, through all of this, it would seem that there is an issue with the phone's USB port.
So the question is, is there any way to restore to the stock 2.1 or 2.2 roms without using Odin (bearing in mind that there are 2.3.3 bootloaders present) or am I pretty much screwed? The idea is to get a warranty replacement on account of the USB issue.
Also, for what it is worth, I am still able to mount the SD cards while the phone is on, this only occurs in Download Mode.
Thanks!

Give the I9000 drivers a shot ... Couldn't hurt...

What rom. Were u running u may need the nexus s drivers

I tried using the i9000 drivers and I am getting the same exact problem. :/
Also, I am running Continuum 5.1.

Try Starting odin plugging the phone into the pc off, and then using the power and volume down buttons to enter download mode. Worked for me.

I have seen it in other places that if your micro sd card has a lot of space used the function can time out before the phone is recognised. It has been recommended to remove your sd card before you start the process.

{SOLVED}Noob with no USB - ODIN from ext sd?

Is there anyway to restore a Captivate to 100% stock without a USB connection? Ie, load something on to an external sd cards to restore?
I've used ODIN plenty of times, but somehow I've lost my USB connection for anything other than charging the phone (USB Device Not Recognized).
Thanks...
Nope, Odin has to be done via USB, the closest thing out there is Redbend, but ATM people have only put together packages for flashing the kernel, not the whole phone
What about drivers?
Have you tried updating the drivers or installing them?
Crap!
I guess I have to continue trying to get my USB connection to work.
I'm worried that my problem might be hardware on the phone, and without reverting to stock, I won't be able to return it!
Any ideas for the USB problem? I'm using the correct (ODIN) USB driver, installed, uninstalled, re-installed.

sounds like you are having the same USB problem I am on mine (see my post on no USB) BUT...after several weeks w no USB, today I connected the phone to my laptop so I could charge it and VOILA! The phone vibrated and asked me what usb connection did I want to select. Out of the blues, sure I've installed some games and what not but I troubleshot the problem for days several weeks ago and had absolutely no luck. I eventually gave up chalking it up as a bad USB on my phone and being that its rooted I couldnt exchange it. I still think its a defective USB but keep trying on yours and maybe it'll kick in like mine did, I did pull the battery like 10 times...I doubt that did it

Wow, that's weird, but great news for you...congrats!
My situation is a little different, since I have USB on the phone to "Ask on connection" and each and every time I plug in the USB the phone vibrates and makes me select. Doesn't matter WHAT I select. The phone thinks all is well, but any computer I try to attach it to says the device isn't recognized. And I've tried both of the drivers, and have tried each on a clean on install on 'fresh' computers.

Back to the topic in the thread title...
...
Since ODIN from an SD card is a no-go...how about a clockwork restore of a stock phone image?
Thanks...
do you have usb debugging enabled? if not enable that. also instead of ask on connection do mass storage thats how it has always worked for me

Debugging on or off, no difference.
Kies, Media, Storage, PC Internet, Ask, no difference.
But thanks for trying!
Fivebraids,
Try it on another computer and see if the drivers download. Maybe something hosed your drivers. Kies always hoses mine.
Did you download and install the drivers that are on the OP in the Odin one click thread? Odin is *****y about drivers and sometimes they take a couple of tries.
Also, does the USB work when you just charge from a wall outlet? If it does then your phone is fine, it is a driver issue.
If you have a Nanadroid backup of stock ran through ClockworkMod within ROM Manager than the answer is yes, if you didn't create a Nandroid backup then the answer is no.
update: I just reread your OP and if it works with charging from the wall then you definately have a driver issue.
Ok, problem solved!
This no USB problem HAS to be a hardware, since I've tried every possible permutation of drivers, settings, different cables, different computers, etc.
I started this thread hoping that I could somehow restore the phone to stock (removing SRE, SU, etc. so I can return it for a new one) without being able to run ODIN. It appears that isn't possible, but I found a way to do the no-usb restore!
I got a copy of the files created by ROM manager of a stock Captivate. I then used Switfp to FTP these files over Wifi to my non-usb phone. I used Rom manager to 'restore' that set of files. All I had to do then was un-root, and voila...STOCK!
I'm off to AT&T tomorrow to return this second Captivate...hoping three times is a charm!
Thanks to everyone for the patience and assistance!
nice job i probably never would've thought of that
Can you link me where you got that stock rom to flash via Nandroid. I am in the same boat as you are. I can't even get my device into recovery. Tried all steps as you and no go on the usb. POS Cappy #2

[Q] is there a fix for this???

ive tried multiple times to fix this but it doesnt work. Last time i posted a thread here i said my phone was broken and i was not able to fix it because of the usb connection problem i had, so i talked to the company and they sent me a replacement but i still have the same usb connection problem, whenever i want to plug in the usb cable to my pc, the phone recognizes the connection but my pc doesn't. i talked to the company about this and they said ' Unfortunately, we don't have any information regarding this issue.", i do not know how to fix this. I've tried uninstalling the usb drivers and re installing them but nothing seems to work.
some of you suggested to try to take out the battery for 30secs open odin plug the usb in the phone hold vol up and down then slap the battery in while still holding keep holding it and if a com sign comes up in odin flash it even if screens blank, but it didn't work. i tried heimdell but it doesnt recognize my phone. if i cant use that, it means i cant root my phone and change the annoying tmobile boot animation. so pleaaaassee can you find a fix for this????, ohh by the way it didn't work when i put it in the download mode.
please
does anybody know how to fix it??? pleeeeeeeeeease
I'm assuming that you downloaded the 64 bit drivers? Try downloading the 32 bit ones. I read somewhere that it worked for some people.
or try installing kies and then plugging in the phone. go to install --> drivers in kies and let it install. then unplug the phone, restart the computer and try again
imusing the32 bit drivers
it didnt work, im going to have to buy another cablee to see if thats the problem, thanks for being so helpful jager555
Also, don't forget to try to hook up the phone to another computer.
ive tried this in 3 different computers
Are you trying to odin or just transfer files to sd?

If it's not the computer or the cable it's the phone. You've narrowed it down. Send it in for warranty?
The phone should work as mass storage with no drivers whatsoever. Pretty much any modern OS out right now will be able to recognize the phone with the drivers it come with and let you access the SD card of the phone, so yes, looks like the phone's the problem.
hmmmmm
i believe its the cable. Im going to try to get a new one and see if it works, cuz the phone i got right now its a replacement that they sent me from the company, so its new and i dont think its the phones problem. And yes im trying to odin.
Can you take format the sd card from ths phone (make sure to back up all the important stuff.) Then take off the phone. Use the computer to put a different rom on the root. Flash the rom using cwm. Let the phone sit to build the cache. While it is building, uninstall the current drivers. Reboot. Then reinstall using the drivers from the bible. Put the phone in download mode and plug the usb into a different port. Lol, but try this after you get the new usb cable.

[Q][NS4G] Problem with fastboot and fixing phone.

Hello, I recently decided to root my phone and place Cyanogenmod on it. When I did that I realized my radio was no longer working. In an attempt to just get back to a working phone for the time being I flashed a rom that I believe was just for the Nexus S and not Nexus S 4G. Due to my stupidity I am unable to communicate from the device to my computer using USB. When I attach the device to the computer nothing happens. The device does not even appear in the device manager. I have tried on multiple computers as well. On top of that the rom seems to have put me back into the stock recovery. If anyone could help me figure out just how to get USB working again I would be very appreciative.
I should note that I can still transfer files to the phone using the sd card or via ftp.
Thank you for your time and help.
Change the USB cable?
Yes, forgot to mention that. I have tried 2 cables both of which work on other devices.
What if you hold in the middle of the volume buttons (i.e. both up and down at the same time) and keep holding, then plug in to your usb port? It should come up as download mode. If it will do that you might try using Odin.
Or try a different machine perhaps?
are the drivers the same for the S as the 4g?
do you have clockwork on the phone or have you tried to run recover by holding volume up and power?
just throwing things out.
Hello, I appreciate any and all suggestions and help.
I have Odin downloaded and installed, but the computer can not find the device so Odin can not do what it needs to do. This is even the case in download mode.
In terms of recovery I am on the stock recovery. I was on clockwork but made a small mistake and now am back to stock.
I know if I can just get the computer to see the phone exists I can fix it.
If you can find the full OTA package for NS4G, you can try putting it on the SD card and flash it via stock recovery.
Also another thing worth trying is connecting the phone to an Ubuntu machine and see if it's detected or not.
I have tried looking for the original full OS. I will continue looking, but the different OS thing is a good idea I did not think of. I will attempt that now. Thank you.
I installed Ubuntu and the Android SDK and Ubuntu was unable to see the phone as well. I am going to keep searching for the original firmware to see if that will fix it. Thank you for your help so far, it is greatly appreciated.
I have found the only rom my phone will accept now is
Android 2.3.4/GRJ22/KRKC1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader
Which is for the M200 variant. This apparently the Korean version.

[Q] SuperOneClick broke my USB?

Well a few days I rooted with SOC worked for a couple days now USB doesn't work at all. It charges just fine but computer does not recognize an external device, nor does my SGS4G. This has been happening with multiple computers and multiple cables, which are the 2 solutions I have found. Thank you for any help I can get.

Interesting problem. I've not used SOC so I may be useless here, but have you tried unrooting with SOC to see if it solves the problem?
If its not recognizing your external SD card have you tried reformatting it?

I could, but it's not recognizing a connection. When I try to tether it says "USB not recognized". I think it's more low-level than the SD card.
Have you tried downloading the drivers again?

I don't think it's a driver issue, neither my Windows 7 box, nor my CR-48 (Chrome OS) see it as a device. If I had bad drivers it would say "unrecognized device", right? It's just allowing electricity, not data to go over the cable.

ok....here is what i did....power down, remove sim card and sd card...power up,plug into computer...it recognizes the phone....so it has to be the sd card i would assume...at least it worked on mine....try it,and let us know please?

Yeah, my bad. I saw that in the OP and forgot. What ROM are you running on it? Would it be worth your time to flash a different ROM to see if it makes a difference?
Could be a hardware issue & possibly unrelated to SOC. I'm not a hardware guy, though, so I'm not sure what tools you need/can create to test the USB port.

I probably can't give you a great explanation, but CWM is the ClockWork recovery Mod. It's a mo-better recovery mode for the phone.

Thanks to golmar88 for putting that together.
if you were to use superone click always use rage against the cage...
also if you have issues with your phone stick it in download mode and plug it into the pc if it was a rom issue your pc would pick it up as download mode is done by the bootloaders not the rom... if it sill not working eather a you have a faluty cable can happen b you do have messed up drivers c you have a debunk usb port... if you still have root access.. you can still instal a new rom just goto krylons cwm final thread use search kinda hard to miss its called KRYLONS CWM FINAL download the files stick them on your sd card ... eather downoad to yuour device directly or use a usb card reader..
oh and for odin to work right 99 percent of the time yuo gotta plug the usb cable into the PORT YOU INSTALLED THE DRIVERS ON
Well, I was able to get USB recognized ONCE, on my laptop that I use for the charging. So, it gets plugged in every day and got recognized once. Unable to reproduce.
I have the same issue, have you tried going settings>wireless and network > Usb utilities click connect storage to PC and then connect the usb cable?
mine says mtp connected but windows still doesn't recognize it
Im having the same.problem to...once i used super one click my computer won't recognize my phone...i have the same builds as you...and even tried to change my drivers...nothing worked...im stuck too...

[Q] No USB detection on Samsung Infuse

HI all,
So yes I have already tried to google, and look through other posts but cant find anything that is my particular situation, heres what happened, Infuse was running on ZEUS 6.1 perfectly, I decided to install ROM][2.3.6]SGH-I997 UCLB3[Rooted, Deodexed, Busybox, Zipaligned, I followed all the instructions, installed ROM, disabled VooDoo lagfix and then the stock kernal, after that the phone just didnt come back to life, the result is currently on the SAMSUNG logo, I can go into recovery just download mode but my USB is not detected either, when I install the drivers it doesnt do anything, tried KIES and other drivers from SAMSUNG, also removed USB ports, restarted, and tried other pc's and laptops and same USB error, even tried on linux, no luck, can anyone please help, I love this phone and the ROM, I have no idea why I attempted to do this but need help.
Thanks all[/FONT]
This happened to me lately but I was on stock froyo. Seems like my usb cable was for charging only. When I bought one that said it was for charging and data, the Infuse was recognized instantly. I am a noob here, but hope this is all of your problem.
Yep, thats what I'm starting to wonder, if its the cable, I am using the microUSB cable that came with the phone from SAMSUNG, never was an issue before, would connect and trasnfer data without a problem, also tried a few blackberry cables no luck, the crazy part is I cant even go to recovery mode, it only goes to download mode, wondering if I can copy some files to the SDcard to boot off with.
If you try everything and it does not work, contact me I know a guy you can send it to for it to be unbricked. When he unbricked mine, he noticed the usb controller somehow glitched and can never be fixed, resulting in a whole new device needed (he tried replacing the usb hub, did no good). Thats what happened to me, make sure to try everything first though.
So after trying a dozen cables, nothing seems to work, I should have known this when the OS was still on ZEUS and I attempted to connect via USB which I received USB not recognized message, I have tried the same SAMSUNG cable for a blackberry and it installs perfectly, so its not the cable, my understanding the USB port on the Infuse is bad, is there a way to boot into recovery of an SDcard so that I can install ZEUS back? I only have "download" mode working, recovery for some reason does not come-up, I am really trying to avoid throwing this phone in the garbage, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Clarification?
You can get into download mode but Odin doesn't see the phone? I don't think you have said anything about trying to do anything to the phone in download mode.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
That's exactly it, I can get into download mode just fine, once I connect to pc I get USB device unrecognized, although the drivers are installed, so the crazy thing is I have been on here since the days of Infused downloading and updating ROMS back and forth, never posted anything, even when I had an issue back when, I was able to go into recovery and do what I need to do to bring it back to life, almost felt like an expert given the amazing advice here, never had an issue till now, please help.
I had accidentally set my Infuse in an "almost" empty cup, not realizing that there was still about an inch of lemonade at the bottom. This unfortunatley screwed my USB recognigtion to my computer. It can charge, but is no longer capable of transferring files via USB. There is, however, Kies Air. This has been such a lifesaver!!! You can transfer files to and from your phone, and I have transferred Zeus and Aeon to my SD card through Kies Air. I installed Aeon on my phone no problem and it is working flawlessly You only need to download the Kies Air app to your phone. No special drivers, apps, or software is needed for your computer. If anyone has any questions on how to do this, you can PM me or just post on here.
